Grade 4: The children loved the Ubuntu Beats session where they all wore headphones and enjoyed a school silent disco. The different genres of music and varied activities got everyone moving and dancing around energetically in their own unique way. It was such fun and everyone came out of the Simpson Hall with a big smile and very rosy cheeks! Grade 5: Ubuntu Beats got us all moving and dancing to the beat, it was wonderful to see the inner child come alive in freedom and spontaneity.

GRADE 1 & 5 CODING & ROBOTICS The Grade 5s put their coding skills to the test and managed to use this technology to bring movement to a remote control car.

From the Grade 1s:

• I like the idea that you need to think and that its like a robot and has its own wifi signal. (Malan)

• I think that it is great to try something new. It is not easy. (Odwa)

• It is fun as we get to drive cars with the ipad. (Troy)

• Its fun as we get to do lots of great stuff with a car. (Chelsea)

• The car only works on an ipad not a phone. (Reeve)

• Its very nice as I like to see the inside of the car. I have learnt how to make a car go. (Paul)

• I love it as it is so interesting. (Hannah)

• It is cool as I like driving the car! (Faith)

• Its fun as you actually get to drive the car with the app on the ipad. (Noah)

• Its so cool as you need a tablet to work the car. (Noah)

• Its cool to learn new things. It taught me a lot about coding. (Jayde)

FEEDBACK FROM GRADE 2 Lee: I enjoyed the drone racing, the headset that he wore, and my favourite part was

watching the drone’s race in the knowledge centre. Emily: My favourite part of today was dancing with the headphones and the drone racing.

It was super fun and made me feel calm. Gita: I liked the dancing Ubuntu Beats and the Science in Action experiments! I liked it

when we got to taste the cold yoghurt. Chris: I loved the drones…. When the racing drone did backflips and went high and fast! Liam Allwood: I learnt that if you mix citric acid and bicarb then it makes a reaction – lots of

bubbles! I thought it was incredible that a drone can chase somebody like Ben English around the field!

Holly: I liked the science experiments. My favourite part was the drone racing. It was sooo cool when it tracked the person. I liked the music and the dancing – that was my favourite part.

Zahra: I liked the drone, but my favourite part was the dancing with headphones in Ubuntu Beats. I liked the music!

Sienna: I loved the science experiments especially the exploded the cans! I got a big fright. Beth: I loved the ubuntu beats…because we got to hear some music with the

headphones and dance with friends. Ava: I really liked the headphones when they lit up – it was so creative. When I took the

headphones off, I couldn’t hear the man speaking on the microphone ! Grace: I think this school is the best! Adrian: I liked it when he froze everything in the science experiments, and we ate the

yoghurt Olly: I liked the dancing and being free! No one would care and I liked the science

experiment - the powder was sour. The drone racing had cool tricks. Mia: I loved today…the best bit was at music – we got to make the instruments! Gita: I liked that we could do new things – silent dancing! I am very grateful for our

school. Talitha: I liked the science experiments - he explained everything in a creative way.

SCIENCE IN ACTION FOOD TECHOLOGY – GRADE 1 - 3 In the Science in Action session the children we were asked “What is Science”? Answers included:

• Experiments. (Jayde)

• You don’t know what will happen. (Arthur)

• It’s exciting. (Hannah) The session started with the discussion on what a solid, liquid and gas are. The children were then shown how primary colours can be mixed in a liquid. Other questions included:

• How do we get bubbles in cake?

• What is a fungus?

• What is baking powder? We also looked at how energy causes movement. This was shown by the ‘popping experimen’t where sodium bicarbonate was mixed with vinegar in a plastic pot that went bang. The last substance that was explored was liquid nitrogen and we saw how it changes from a liquid into a gas. The highlight was the frozen yoghurt at the end.

The Grade 3s will all want to take Chemistry in Grade 10! They loved the experiments with Nitrogen and enjoyed the frozen yogurt.

BRAAI DAY The children also enjoyed some cultural dining at Somerset House this week. Yesterday they enjoyed Chicken Korma Curry, Basmati Rice, Laffa (flat breads) and Roasted Butternut. In anticipation of Heritage Day and National Braai Day next week, Mr Rautenbach came to braai for all of Oakwood and the Prep School. The delicious smells made it very hard to concentrate and the children enjoyed Boerewors rolls with “Tamatie Smoor”. They could even taste some “Stywe Pap” (mielie pap) made lovingly by the kitchen staff. (See picture below… Mrs Rautenbach keeping a strict eye over Mr Rautenbachs temperature control)

GRADE 2, 4 AND 7 INSPIRE AFRICA DRONE ACTIVIATION The time with Inspire Africa was both entertaining and educational. Everyone enjoyed coding the drones, flying them through an obstacle course, and watching Matthew do tricks with his commercial drones that get up to speeds of 200km/h and fly hundreds of metres up into the air.

GRADE 3 PROJECT The Grade 3H class presented their theme orals today. The entire oral was researched, written and practiced at school. We definitely have some budding activists.

GRADE 4 TECH PROJECT The Grade 4s had an awesome, exciting day! They spent time working on their Marble Runs in their groups, trying to perfect their amazing creations. One of the criteria is that the marble must take exactly 20 seconds to go from the beginning to the end of the course, which is proving to be quite a challenge! The finishing touches will be added tomorrow.

GRADE 5 TECH PROJECT What a fun, messy day. The Eco-brick chair challenge has continued in the Grade 5 classes with lots of problem solving and creating.

GRADE 6 TECH PROJECT The Grade 6 children have been designing, making and presenting systems using electric circuits They were given a choice of 4 different challenges which they could make. The ‘Steady Hand Game’ and ‘Lighthouse’ challenges proved to be most popular amongst the children. They were required to design and make a system that uses a circuit to produce a form of output energy. The children had to use their knowledge of electricity and circuits to problem solve, collaborate with peers and communicate their final product. They were certainly “amped” and produced quality models.

GRADE 2 AND 6 MUSIC The Grade 6s learnt about the history of the recording of sound and music with specific reference to the contributions of the Thomas Edison and Quincy Jones. Here are their reactions to early phonograph recordings.

The Grade 2s explored the making of instruments with 'safety gear' such as 'safety glasses', wig (to protect your hair) and a jacket (to protect your clothes). They then used the instruments to create their own musical piece.

OAKWOOD MUSIC Grade R started the day with a ‘music walk’ around the prep school, beating drums, tambourines, symbols, shakers, triangles as they walked. The singing of the birds was drowned out! The Squirrel class enjoyed making their own musical instruments but the highlight of the day was ‘Ubuntu Beats’ where they were exposed to some free dancing in Simpson Hall. The children loved every minute of this experience and those that were a bit hesitant to start, were joining in in the end, with a smile on their faces. The Grade 00 and 000 Oakwood children enjoyed participating in an interactive music session where they learnt new songs and with Mrs. Rachel Potgieter. They learnt new songs and thoroughly enjoyed the use of the percussion instruments!

SPRING MUSIC CONCERT What an absolute delight to see so many stellar performances by our Senior Prep musicians this evening. The hard work and resultant growth in musicianship was clearly evident. Congratulations to all performers - you can sleep with proud hearts tonight. Thank you to all the music staff for the extra effort and lessons behind the scenes. Thank you to all the parents and academic staff who came to support the pupils.

GRADE 1 BEE TALK Jade Botha in Grade 1 organized a talk for the Grade 1s after she had a beehive moved on her property. The children learnt about the different kinds of a bees one can find in a hive and about their jobs. The children were fascinated and asked many thought provoking questions.
