2 Commissioning

2.1 System descriptionThe American GPS ( Global Positioning System) is aworldwide satellite navigation system. The 24 satellites inthis system transmit the time read from their onboardatomic clocks in G.M.T. (Greenwich-Mean-Time). With theSICLOCK GPSDEC and the SICLOCK GPSCOM sys-tems (described below), the GPS satellite signals can bedown-loaded and made available for a variety of applica-tions. SICLOCK GPSDEC (compact DIN rail housing) isdesigned for industrial applications while SICLOCKGPSCOM (desktop mounting) is suitable for the office en-vironment. The antenna is only suitable for stationaryapplications due to the integrated „One SatelliteMode“.Figures 2 and 3 show the commissioning of SICLOCKGPSCOM (Fig. 2) and SICLOCK GPSDEC (Fig. 3).

2.2 Antenna

The antenna may be set up on the ground or on a wall de-pending on the suitability of the surrounding landscape.

The components of the antenna are shown in Figures1a/b.

2.2.1 Mounting the antenna

2.2.1.1 Location: The antenna may be located out-doors. In choosing a location, it is important to place theantenna at a suitable distance from potential sources ofinterference (e.g. Electrical devices).

Every effort must be made to ensure that the antennasees as much sky as possible, i.e. that it is not located tooclose to nearby buildings, etc. Suitable sites for the an-tenna would be on a flat roof or facing a large (!) window.The antenna is protected against overvoltages caused bylightning via the 2XV9450-1AR11 lightning protection.

The antenna can be fixed in an upright ( Figure 1a) or in aright-angled (hanging on a wall, Figure 1b) position. Thewide mounting plate allows the antenna to be firmly se-

cured to the ground or to the surface of a wall.

2.2.1.2 Assembly instructions:(a) Mark out the holes with the help of the mounting plate

(4) at the erection site.(b) In preparing for the assembly of the antenna, it must

be decided whether the antenna is going to be locatedon a wall or on the ground.

• If the antenna is to be located on the ground(Figure 1a), then the antenna cable (7) is pulledfrom the mounting plate through the mounting(4) straight through the two opposite lying open-ings of the cubic housing (3) and then throughthe connector.

Now the antenna cable connector is inserted into theantenna head (1) and screwed in tightly.

Then the connector is screwed into the antennahead (and not the other way around, otherwisethe cable will be shorn)!.

Finally the connector (with the antenna head), (1)and (2) and the mounting (4) are pushed into thecubic housing and easily fixed into place with theheadless screws (5,6).

• In the case of a wall site (Figure 1b), the an-tenna cable (7) is pulled from the mounting platethrough the support arm (4) and then at a rightangle through the cubic housing.

Then the antenna cable connector is inserted into the antenna head (1) and screwed in tightly. Then the connector is screwed into the antenna

head (and not the other way around, otherwisethe cable will be shorn!).

Finally the connector (with the antenna head), (1) and (2)and the mounting (4) are pushed into the cubic hous-ing and easily fixed into place with the headlessscrews (5) and (6).

c) Close the lid on the cubic housing. The headlessscrews should now be tightened.

d) Before screwing it together, the antenna cable mustbe drawn through the opening at the underside of themounting plate (4).

e) Fix the antenna unit at the chosen location.

2.2.2 Connecting the antennaTo connect the antenna to the GPS-decoder, the free endof the antenna cable is inserted into the GPS-decoder’santenna socket. These sockets are located• on the top of the SICLOCK GPSDEC casing• at the back of the SICLOCK GPSCOM casing.The length of the cable normally supplied is 15 m. A 30 mcable (Order-No: 2XV9450-1AR12).or a 70 m cable canalso be supplied on request (Order-No: 2XV9450-1AR07).

2.2.3 Antenna alignmentThe antenna must always be vertically aligned.

2.3 Power supply

2.3.1 SICLOCK GPSDEC:• DC: 10V to 32V• AC: 9V to 24V

The voltage adapter which is delivered with the prod-uct allows a connection to a 230V AC supply. The poweris fed through pins 14 and 15 of the connection X1 (Fig.4). The polarity of the connection is irrelevant.

Important: If the power supply and the signal have acommon ground (DC supply) then the ground must beconnected to the GND pins of the X1 connection (pin 1 or5) and the power is fed through pins 14 or 15 (Fig. 4)!

2.3.2 SICLOCK GPSCOM:The SICLOCK GPSCOM-desktop unit already contains apower supply module. This must be supplied from a 150V-230V/50-60Hz AC power supply.

2.4 Basic Functions

2.4.1 Time transmissionThe satellites of the GPS system continually transmit thetime from their internal atomic clocks and their pathstream. Since the satellites position continually changes,the time is transmitted in G.M.T., which corresponds to ageographical length of 0°.This information can determine the actual location when 4satellite signals are received. If locations are known, thenthe transmission of only 1 satellite signal is enough to de-termine the time having an Internal precision within 1µµs. This is known as the „One Satellite Mode“. Since thetime calculation occurs after receiving a stationary loca-tion, the SICLOCK GPSDEC and GPSCOM decoders arenot suitable for movable applications such as on ships orother vehicles.The transmitted GPS-coded time is converted by the de-coder into local time including the changeover for examplefrom summer to winter. The results from this calculation isconverted into a user-friendly DCF77 and ASCII messageformat and then transmitted to the interfaces.

2.4.2 LED SignalsThe LED signals on the device1 help to identify the fourdistinctive operating modes:

• Red and not blinking: This operating mode is dis-played both after the device has been powered up (fora max. of 15 seconds) and in the case of a fault. Thefault may be caused either by an incorrect configura-tion or the loss of the link to the GPS-receiver.

• Red and blinking: This signal means that the systemis functioning normally, however no connection to theSatellite exists. After power-up the system goes firstinto the continuous red mode and then into the flash-ing red mode until a satellite signal is received.

• Green and blinking: Not more than 3 satellites arebeing received when the system displays this mode.The GPS-Time is available. If the system is unable tocompensate for the signal transmission time from thesatellite, the precision lies between 20 and 50ms.When the position is known, the decoder changes tothe „one satellite mode“, where the exact time isreached. Refer to section 3.2 for details.

• Green and not blinking („one satellite mode“): Ifthe position of the receiver could be identified afterbeing turned on, then only one satellite signal is nec-essary for generating the time having a precision of 1µs (plus the delay of the interface circuits).It is notnecessary to have a permanent connection from theantenna to at least 4 satellites, when using the „onesatellite mode“. It suffices to have such a transmissiononce a day. Refer to section 3.2 for details.

2.4.3 System InterfacingThe various possibilities for interfacing with the GPS-decoder are listed below.

• RS232-interface X2 for connecting to a PC or aWorkstation. (SubD-Connector, 9 pin.Section 2.6.1 and 3.1.2)

• TTY (X1, current loop interface, SICLOCK GPSDEConly), e.g. to connect a SINEC-time message sender.(For configuration see section 2.6.2 and 3.1.1)

• Antenna connection to link up with radio clocks(BNC-female connector(s), see section 3.1.3):

(a) 5mV (X4)(b) 500mV (X3, SICLOCK GPSDEC only).

2.5 System settingsThe GPS-decoder requires a list of settings to operate cor-rectly. These settings include for example, whether aswitch over from summer time to winter time is necessary,the form of the time message to be sent to the applicationand the interval at which the time should be sent to theapplication. The GPS-decoder is delivered with standardsettings. A program called PARGPS.EXE is supplied tochange the settings with a PC. The driver calledGPSUHR05.SYS is necessary to communicate with theGPS-decoder. The various system interactions are shownin Fig. 5.

2.5.1 Hardware installationTo connect the GPSDEC-decoder with the serial port of aPC or workstation the included cable or an RS232 exten-sion cable (no null-modem-cable) can be used. The X2terminal of the GPSDEC decoder must have a 9 pin SubDmale connector.

2.5.2 Installation diskThe disk contains five files:• GPSUHR05.SYS (Driver)• PARGPS.EXE (Setting program)• PARDATEI.DAT (File with standard settings)• SINEC.DAT (File with settings to enable a SIEMENS

time transmitter (SINEC-H1) to be controlled)• LSA1.DAT (File with settings to enable a SIEMENS

DCF77-time sender-unit (LSA1) to be controlled)

2.5.3 Installing the GPSUHR05.SYS driverThe GPSUHR05.SYS DOS-driver has two functions. Itchanges the internal DOS-time when a standard timemessage is received and it also enables the configurationtool to interact with the GPS-decoder. The driver is in-stalled as follows:

• Copy the GPSUHR05.SYS driver from the Installationdisk into the DOS directory:

copy a:\gpsuhr05.sys c:\dos • Edit the file CONFIG.SYS and insert the line:

device = c:\dos\gpsuhr05.sys /C:c /B:b /P:p

whereby (Default values are printed in bold writ-ing):c (Port): (1=COM1, 2=COM2)b (Baud rate): (0=38400, 1=19200, 2=9600,

After installing the driver the computer has to be rebooted.

Important: The first time the GPS-decoder is used with acomputer, the baud rate and parity settings have tocorrespond to the default settings in the GPS-decoder, otherwise the transfer of the time-messageand the setting of the internal DOS-time will not bepossible. The choice of serial port has to match thesystem set-up. The settings baud rate and parity canbe changed at a later stage with the help ofPARGPS.EXE

Example: If the GPS-decoder is to be attached to COM1and not COM2 (default), then the following line must beentered into CONFIG.SYS

device = c:\dos\gpsuhr05.sys /C:1

2.5.4 Setting the PARGPS.EXE programWith this program the GPS-settings can be easily trans-ferred to SICLOCK GPSCOM and SICLOCK GPSDEC.

2.5.4.1 Installation: The PARGPS.EXE program re-quires the GPSUHR05.SYS driver to communicate with theGPS-decoder (For installation refer to section 2.5.3).Thesetting program can be installed as follows:

• Create a new directory (e.g. PARGPS) with md pargps.• Copy the program to this directory with: copy a:\pargps.exe c:\pargps .• A separate directory can be created for the files with

the GPS-settings if so desired: md pardat, into which the file PARDAT.DAT with the standard GPS-

settings can be copied.• The GPS_DAT parameter is then set to the directory

(e.g. c:\pardat), into which the GPS-setting filesshould be placed. This is done with the following linein the AUTOEXEC.BAT file :

set gps_dat = c:\pardat

The GPS-setting files can, of course, be placed in thesame directory as the setting program (Default-setup).

2.5.4.2 Brief description: A comprehensive programdescription can be found in section 4.2. This section dealswith the parameters baud rate and parity. The configura-tion process consists of three steps:

(a) Start the system with the installed driver from section2.5.3 (The driver writes a message to the screen whenthe PC is booted).

(b) Start the setting program with the desired GPS-decoder settings, which have been stored in the ap-propriate directory. There are three ways to call theprogram:

i. pargps -e: The settings in the pardatei.dat file are loaded auto-matically.

i. pargps -e[-f<name>]: The set-tings in the <name>.dat file areloaded.

Important: The extension .DAT is not needed!

i. pargps -e [-i<name>]: The<name>.dat settings file is createdand the settings are saved to it.

Important: The extension.DAT is not needed,-e starts the programm in English language.

Example: pargps -e -itest puts the current set-tings in the TEST.DAT file

(c) The PC can only communicate with the GPS-decoderif both ports are identically configured. For this reasonthe driver has to be configured with the setting pro-gram to match the decoder’s set-up. The factory in-stallation for the GPS-decoder port is.

: 9600, NONE. If no information is available about the GPS-decoder port

then all the possible variations have to be tried. Thedriver settings can be changed with the menu option:<l> Driver (see section 4.1). The connection canonly be set up by executing the GPS-status command(Menu option <k> GPS-Status (see section4.2.3.21)). If the connection cannot be set up afterseveral attempts, then the driver settings are differentfrom the GPS-decoder settings.

(d) When a connection to the GPS-decoder is estab-lished, the settings can be loaded in the GPS-decoderwith <i> Write to EEPROM (see section 4.2.3.19).With <j> Read to EEPROM (see section 4.2.3.20)the GPS-decoder settings can be uploaded to the PC.

Important: When the system is rebooted thesechanges to the driver are ignored! The changes caneither be saved in the CONFIG.SYS file (2.5.3) beforerebooting the PC or the changes can be enteredeach time the program is started.

2.5.4.3 Error messagesThe following messages can appear when starting theprogram:

• „Fault during start of setting program ....“ The message indicates that something is wrong with the

way in which the program is called (section 2.5.4.2)!• „Driver cannot be opened !!!

Hit any key to continue !“

Check to see if the driver has been properly installed(section 2.5.3). After acknowledging this message, theprogram is started with the default (factory) settingsPARDATEI.DAT .

2.6 Standard connection options

2.6.1 RS232-Interface connectionThe following three procedures use the RS232 interface inthis system.

2.6.1.1 Configuring: Installation and use of thePARGPS.EXE setting program has been dealt with in sec-tion 2.5.4 .

2.6.1.2 Time message: If the system is receiving thecurrent time from the satellite, then a time message issent every minute over the RS232-Interface (see section3.3.1). This message together with the appropriate oper-ating system specific driver allows PCs and/or worksta-tions to be synchronised. The connection is made over a1:1 cable, the use of a Null-modem-cable is not supported.

2.6.1.3 DCF77: The demodulated DCF77 signal is sentover pin 9 of the RS232 interface, the base signal levelbeing -10 V. The signal can be used for example, to syn-chronise high priority time messages at the start of everyminute. The signal is used in conjunction with the appro-priate driver to achieve synchronisation in a WINDOWSNT or WINDOWS 95 environment. An adapter which con-nects pin 9 of the GPSDEC interface to Pin 2 (RxD) of thePC/Workstation-interface (figure 6).

2.6.2.1 Connecting the SIEMENS SINEC-H1-TimetransmitterThe SINEC-H1-Time transmitter can interpret user-definedmessages. The necessary settings are to be found in theSINEC.DAT file which can be loaded with thePARGPS.EXE program described in section 2.5.4, with thecommand “PARGPS -fsinec“. There are basically twoways to connect the SINEC-H1-time transmitter to theSICLOCK GPSDEC (over the active or the passive TTYcurrent loop interface). Figure 7 shows both possibilities.

3 Preference

3.1 InterfacesFigure 9 shows in schematic form the possible outputs atthe various GPS-decoder interfaces. These combinationsare treated individually below. A normal or inverted polaritycan be selected for the DCF77 message output and forthe second or minute pulses.

3.1.1 Connection X1 (GPSDEC only)The X1 connector is a male connector found at the bottomof the device. See Table 2 for details.

3.1.1.1 1 second output (X1.1-4): At this port, after thereceiver has received a valid time, a 50ms pulse is sentevery second. The 1 second output is like the DCF77-output and can be used in a similar fashion. In the quietphase, the transistor allows current to flow and is turnedoff for the duration of the pulse. Unlike the DCF77 mes-sage, the 1 second pulses are sent even after the connec-tion to the satellite ceases to exist and no more DCF77messages can be sent. The transistor’s collector is con-nected to X1.2, the emitter to X1.3. The volt. at the currentsource X1.4 is limited to 12 V. Instead of the 1 second

pulses, it is possible to send the following signals de-pending on the device settings (section 6).

• 1 second clock: this is a signal, that switches itslevel every second.

• 1 minute pulse: Issues a 50ms pulse at the start ofevery minute.

• 1 minute clock: Signal that changes its level everyminute

• Auxiliary clock: Signal to control the auxiliary clock(1 minute clock) taking the changeover fromsummer time to winter time into account.

3.1.1.2 DCF77-TTY current loop output (X1.5-8): Thisis the demodulated output signal of the DCF77-timesender. With a connection to an optical coupler an inter-ference free

connection over long distances can be realized with theTTY current loop interface. This signal can for example,connected directly to a LSA1-time message receiver or toa PLC which can read and decode the signal over a digitalinput. . In the quiet phase, the transistor as in the 1 sec-ond pulse, allows current to flow and is turned off for theduration of the pulse. For a Low-Bit the current is switchedoff for 100ms and for a High-Bit for 200ms.The transistor’s collector is connected to pin X1.7 andemitter to X1.6. the current available at X1.8 makes the

connections shown in Figure. 10 possible:The 1 second Impulse signal (X1.1) can be used to regu-late the normal voltage of the output to 12V. By changingthe device settings it is possible to make the RS232 inter-face time message available at the output rather than theDCF77 pulse. The TTY time message can of course betransmitted over longer distances than the RS232 signal(see section 3.3.1).

3.1.2 Connection X2X2 is a Sub D female connection at the front (SICLOCKGPSDEC) or the rear (SICLOCK GPSCOM) of the device.The connection assignment is described in the followingtable. See also section 2.6.1. The terms send and receiveare used from the PC point of view.The interface requires a triple line connection i.e. It usesonly a send, receive and ground signal. The baud rate canbe changed to the values 38400bd, 19200bd, 9600bd and2400bd (see section 4.2.3.11). The message is sent asyn-chronously and consists of a startbit, 8 data bits and astop bit. The parity can be set to even, odd or no parity.The connection to a PC or a workstation is done with asimple extension cable (not a null modem cable):The signal lines RxD (Receive), TxD (Transmit) and GND(Ground) are used to transmit messages. The signals RTSand CTS as well as the signals DSR, DCD and DTR areconnected together at the port X2.

3.1.3 Connections X3 and X4 (GPSDEConly)At the antenna ports X3 and X4 there is a 77.5 kHz sinu-soidal signal with various voltage levels, which is modu-lated with the DCF77 time code i.e. for 100ms (Low) or200ms (High) the carrier deviates from it's normal strengthby 25%.The output voltage of the BNC connector X4 is 500mVwith a 50Ω resistance in series (SICLOCK GPSDEConly). The output voltage of the connection X3 is 5mV inseries with a capacitor and a 50Ω terminating resistor. Theexact wiring of the antenna is shown in Fig. 11.The output X4 has a greater amplitude and allows the sig-nal to be transmitted over larger distances, the output X3

can be used as a connection to the antenna input of theDCF77-receivers. The series capacitance inhibits the DCvoltages which can be produced by active antennas.It is possible to program the response of the antenna out-puts (X3, X4) and the DCF77 (X1.5-8) to the breakdown ofthe satellite connection. The two possibilities are either tocontinue sending the DCF-Code indefinitely or to stop

sending after a period of 4 minutes. The drop in amplitudeis caused when the carrier signal passes through the zero.

3.2 PrecisionTable 4 contains the precision of each interface. The rela-tive precision specifies the maximum deviation which canoccur between two pulses in a row while the absolute pre-cision specifies the difference from the atomic clock whichupdates the whole GPS-System. A precision of between20 and 50 ms has to be added to the absolute precisionwhen there are no more than three satellite connections.This is to take into account the signal delay from the satel-lite to earth which cannot be compensated for in this case.When connections to more than 3 satellites exist the timeis correct to within 1µs.A baud rate of 38400 results in a maximum transmissiontime for the first character T of 200µs + 11 x 26µs, i.e. ca.500µs in total.

3.3 Messages and settingsFor enable the communication between the GPS-decoderand the receiver, the following control characters havebeen defined:

EOZ (end of time) - 95hSOZ (start of time) - 96hEOP (end of parameter) - 97hSOP (start of parameter) - 98hHSK (handshake) - 99h

3.3.1 Time messagesIt is possible by means of the settings to choose betweena standard time message and a user-defined time mes-sage.The sending of the time message depends on the set-tings2. Resulting delays are caused mainly by the serialport’s transmission time.

3.3.1.1 Standard time messages: These messagesare sent at the beginning of every minute as a string ofASCII characters and can be easily written to a monitor.

A standard time message delivers the current time to thedriver software. User-defined time messages (see section3.3.1.2) cannot be used for this purpose because themessage format must be known by the driver in advance.The standard time message is made up as follows:

bit 10: The time could be read in the previous mi-

nute from the GPS-receiver.1: The time could not be read in the previous

minute from the GPS-receiver. The timewas established internally.

bit 20: The settings are consistent i.e. they could

be read without error from the EEPROM.What is not checked, however, is the va-lidity of the settings. This is the job of theprogram used to define the settings.

1: The settings obtained from the EEPROMare inconsistent i.e. a problem occurredwhen the parameters were being read. Ifthis status occurs then the GPS-status will

also be faulty. By checking this bit it canbe established whether the fault lies in thereceiver or the settings.

3.3.1.2 User-defined time messages: It is possible toconstruct and send a “user-defined time message“ inplace of the standard message. This message consists ofup to 40 characters. The easiest way to create one ofthese is with the help of the program PARGPS.EXE (seesection 4.2.3.17).The user-defined time messages are sent at the same in-tervals as the standard messages, except that the <SOZ>-<EOZ>- delimiters are omitted.

3.3.2 Defining the settingsThe settings allow a summer time to winter time change-over, the defining of general sender behaviour, baud rate,parity, the interval at which messages are to be sent andthe message format, as well as the interfaces. The pro-gram PARGPS.EXE enables the settings to be easily con-figured (see section 2.5.4 and 4.2).

4.2.3 Using the programFigure 12 shows the screen output after starting the pro-gram.The separate settings (Menu options) are presented in atable with three columns:

(a) Description: Time zone allows the calculation of thelocal time through the addition of an offset (in hoursand quarter of an hour) to the UTC time (UniversalTime Coordinated), which is sent from the GPS satel-lite. The hours are written with numbers and the quar-ter of an hour is represented with the letters a (15min), b (30 min) and c (45 min). For example, entering„3a“ means a time offset of 3 hours and 15 minutes. Ifno letter is entered, then a time offset results as awhole hour.

4.2.3.17 <h> Message:(a) Description: This menu option allows the user-defined

message to be defined. There are a total of 40 char-acter fields available, which can be sent over the serialport if the option ‘user-defined message’ is chosenunder <g>.

(b) Sub-menu: Values(c) Sub-menu format (s. Diag. 14) <Position> : <Function>(d) Possible Values:

xXX: contents, which begin with an x are in-terpreted as hexadecimal values.#A: contents, which begin with a # , are inter-preted as ASCII characters.$AAA: The $-character is followed by threecarachters. The various possibilities and theirmeanings are shown in Table 6.

Important: If the user-defined message consists ofless than 40 places, then to end the message the lastentry should be a $END, otherwise 40 places will besent.

4.2.3.19 <i> Write to EEPROM:(a) Description: With this option the current settings are

transferred to the connected GPS-decoder and imme-diately activated.

(b) Possible error messages: see Table 7.4.2.3.20 <j> Read EEPROM:Description: With this option the settings stored in theEEPROM of the GPS-decoder are loaded into the settingprogram and simultaneously displayed on the screen. Thepossible error messages are the same as the messagesthat can occur when writing to the EEPROM (see Table 7).

4.2.3.21 <k> GPS Status:Description: This option does not effect the settings. Itopens a status window, in which the time and date of thePC’s CMOS clock are displayed.
