The Veterinary Practitioners Association of the Philippines (VPAP) is the oldest

and biggest multi-disciplinary affiliate veterinary association of the country.

Founded in 1972 by a small group of practitioners involved in the fields of small

animal, equine, swine and industrial medicine practices, VPAP has grown leaps

and bounds ever since its conception. The VPAP now covers a wider variety of

disciplines namely swine, large animals, small ruminants, wildlife, research,

laboratory animals and even the academy.

Due to the global pandemic COVID-19, the 48th Annual Scientific Conference

was re-scheduled from June 4 - 5, 2020 to October 29 - 30, 2020 with the

theme "Revolutionize: Transforming Philippine Veterinary Practice through

Institutional Linkages." With VPAP's aim to constantly provide continuing

professional development and education to Filipino veterinary practitioners,

instead of a one-time presentation, this year's conference will be available as a

video-on-demand, which will be available for viewing online for up to a year.

This year's topics include COVID and its effect in veterinary practice, One

Health, Exotic Animal Medicine, Research Practice, Companion Animal

Medicine, and Practice Management.

Effect of French maritime pine bark extract combination therapy in dogs with mitral valve regurgitation

Nihon University College of Bioresource Sciences Laboratory of Veterinary Physiology

Professor Koie Hiroshi DVM, PhD.

French Maritime Pine Bark eExtract (FMPBE) is a natural plant extract from the bark of the maritime pine tree which grows exclusively along the coast of Southwest France. It contains Pyocyanidins (70±5%), numerous Phenolic acids, Flavonone and Taxifolin (1). FMPBE has several potentially protective effects to support health condition. The main effect is to enhance Nitric Oxide (NO) leading to the improvement of blood vessel function and blood flow (2). This study aims to investigate the effect of FMPBE in dogs with mitral regurgitation (MR) symptom. MR is a leaking mitral valve that allows the blood flow in two directions during the contraction. Some blood flows back into the atrium. This leakage can increase blood volume and pressure in the left atrium (3). This effect can increase pressure pulmonary veins.

In order to observe the effect of FMPBE in dogs with MR symptom, FMPBE was administered to 26 dogs with MR symptom (3 cases were administrated solely with FMPBE whereas 23 cases were administrated both FMPBE and medicine) for a month. Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP) value and Quality of Life (QOL) value were used to indicate the alteration. The result showed the amelioration of ANP value in 10 cases (40%) and QOL value in 15 cases (57.7%) after taking FMPBE. Hence, Dogs with MR symptom showed the significant effect after administration of FMPBE.

Clinical trail by the administration of FMPBE was performed based on the examination from veterinarians and ACVIM guideline, which was used to identify the severity of heart disease. After FMPBE administration for a month, 77.8% from Group A (ANP Measurement) and 66.6% from Group B (Clinical follow-up) represented the effective results of FMPBE. The clinical signs after the administration of FMPBE were altered. The coughing and syncope were disappeared and decreased. Likewise, the exercise intolerance, activity and breathing style were ameliorated. Furthermore, ultrasound, X-ray, and respiratory rate during bedtime from 11 cases (Group A and Group B) were observed. The result showed the significant improvement.

The recent study demonstrated an improvement of MR symptom in FMPBE-treated dogs. More than a half of subjects showed the significantly improvement of MR symptom. Although the precise mechanisms were not fully understood, the effect of FMPBE involves angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition, NO production, and

Page 26: G¼p|Æ Æ ¯ª ¼Àhp.brs.nihon-u.ac.jp/~vetphys/news/pdf/VPAP48th.pdftrainings at the Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA), Auditor fron 2014-2015, 2016-2017 and 2018

2

antioxidation and anti-inflammatory activities. Pine bark extract has been able to exert the inhibitory effect on ACE (5).

In conclusion, FMPBE inhibits vasoconstriction caused by adrenalin via the production of NO through the enzyme nitric Oxide synthase (NOS) (4). NO is a crucial mediator of endothelium-dependent vasodilatation and plays a role in platelet aggregation and maintaining the balance between smooth muscle cell growth and differentiation (6). Likewise, it promotes Prostacyclin production as well as suppresses endotheline production, a potent vasoconstrictor modulating the release and action of NO in the vessel wall (7), leading to the improvement of pulmonary edema and reduction of bradycardia syncope by reducing the blood return to the heart and increasing oxygen supply to stimulate the conduction system.
