•Khomeini became head of the new Islamic Republic of Iran

•He was a conservative cleric

As such his views were derived from Iranian Shia IslamHe believed previous governments failed because they had not followed Islamic law

•Once in power human rights violations increased

•Tight grip on dissident groups and women’s clothing

•The economy has improved Unemployment and inflation have gone gown

•But he is running the highest deficit since the revolution
