7.3 Give two Best Practices of the Institution/Department

Give details of any two best practices which have contributed to better academic and

administrative functioning of the university.

1. Title of the Practice: Installation of roof top solar photovoltaic power plant in the

college.

2. Objectives of the Practice:

What are the objectives / intended outcomes of this “best practice” and what are the

underlying principles or concepts of this practice?

Realizing the fact that solar energy offers clean, green and inexhaustible energy, an

attempt was made to harness solar energy by installation of rooftop photovoltaicsolar

system. It has been proven that it is ideal for residential and commercial

establishments and Installation of solar panels is a one-time cost and requires very

little maintenance annually to ensure its working at maximum capacity.

It has been shown to be one of the most secured energy generation procedures as there

are zero emissions of harmful elements. A solar photovoltaic module is the most silent

producer of energy as the photovoltaic cells do not produce any kind of noise while

generating electricity.

Page 42: GOVERNMENT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE SECTOR-10, …homescience10.ac.in/storage/pages/iqac-aqar/GHSC-10-IQAC-AQAR-… · Chandigarh - Chandigarh Union Territory 160010 homescience-chd@nic.in

The college aims to promote renewable energy through its photovoltaic plant which

will address both economic and social concerns.

India plans to derive 15% of the power from renewable energy sources by 2020. In

order to meet this target, an initiative was taken by our college to produce electricity

while concentrating on solar power for renewable energy.

3. The Context.

What were the contextual features or challenging issues that needed to be addressed in

designing and implementing this practice

The global trend toward renewable energy is not just a market shift within the energy

industry, but a broad re‐orientation of society as we move into the future. The sudden increase

in the price of oil, uncertainties associated with its supply and the adverse impact on the

balance of payments position and identifying energy self-sufficiency was a major driving

force which led to the establishment of photovoltaic plant for new and renewable energy in

the college, It was an obvious choice for ensuring energy security, access and continuous

provision of power. Photo voltaic solar energy system is converting sunlight into electricity

without connecting to local utility grids. This renewable energy project is playing an

important role in addressing energy deficit and energy access problem being faced by various

institutions.

4. The Practice

Describe the practice and its uniqueness in the context of India’s higher education. What

were the constraints / limitations, if any, faced?

A 90 KWp roof top solar photovoltaic power plant was installed in the college by Chandigarh

Renewal Energy and Science and Technology Department, Chandigarh Administration. The

plant is capable of producing 360 Units of power per day, amounting to a cost of Rs 54000.

An amount of Rs 73 lakhs was invested by the administration for its installation. The

photovoltaic plant was inaugurated by Honourable Governor of Punjab and Haryana, Cum

Administrator UT Chandigarh.

5. Evidence of Success

Provide evidence of success such as performance against targets and benchmarks, review

results. What do these results indicate?

Renewable energy use is on the rise globally. Installation of roof top solar photovoltaic power

plant has led to modest growth in the region’s renewable energy industry. It has lead to

energy security, clean air in association with the development of renewable energy. The plant

situated in college is producing 360 Units of power per day, amounting to a cost of Rs 54000.

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required Please identify the problems

encountered and resources required to implement the practice.

Though solar energy is highly publicized and hotly debated, it is still an emerging

phenomenon and facing obstacles in achieving it. The main problem encountered while

Page 43: GOVERNMENT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE SECTOR-10, …homescience10.ac.in/storage/pages/iqac-aqar/GHSC-10-IQAC-AQAR-… · Chandigarh - Chandigarh Union Territory 160010 homescience-chd@nic.in

43

implementing this practice was that solar photovoltaic power plant requires land, which is a

scarce resource. The solar projects require water for surface cleaning to ensure optimum

performance of the plant. The water has to be sourced from local water bodies.

II.1. Title of the Practice: Faculty Enrichment program

2. Objectives of the Practice:

What are the objectives / intended outcomes of this “best practice” and what are the

underlying principles or concepts of this practice?

Faculty Enrichment Programs allowed faculty to keep pace with the fast-changing

learning environment were conducted.

To keep pace with the relentless wheel of change and update the intellectual calibre of

the faculty

To motivate the faculty to apply for the major and minor research projects by

relevant for the present day.

To encourage the faculty to organize and present research papers in the national /

international seminars / conferences / workshops and to publish quality research

articles in reputed journals, edit study materials for the prescribed syllabus and author

books of high originality.

3. The Context.

What were the contextual features or challenging issues that needed to be addressed in

designing and implementing this practice?

Faculty enrichment programs were conducted throughout the year largely in response to

Faculty Needs. Since constant updating of the subject is very essential, the college was highly

conscious of the importance of quality enhancement and quality sustenance at par with the

progress of technology and in keeping pace with other institutions. Through this initiative, the

college aimed at generating interest of the staff in acquiring knowledge of the latest trends

and techniques for dissemination of course content. It aimed at creating a research ambience

through motivating staff members and guiding them to acquire grants from the funding

agencies, taking up minor or major research projects, guiding research scholars and

publishing research papers and books. The program enabled the faculty to

The workshops conducted were a platform to raise issues and concerns and discuss academic

innovations. The program aimed at discussing the academic reforms. Panel discussion with

experts from multiple disciplines generated intensive dialogue. Faculty members shared their

views and sought comments on feasibility and strengths of various research aspects. The

college organized five faculty enrichment programs namely;

Capacity Building on Gardening Techniques & Practices

E-Learning and Online Students Record Keeping

Orientation and Awareness Session on Digital Payment System

Ethics and Interpersonal Relationship at Workplace and

Meeting Diverse Challenges of Modern Day Education

The major challenge was ensuring that the classes did not suffer during these

programmes, so they were held in the afternoon.

5. Evidence of Success

Provide evidence of success such as performance against targets and benchmarks, review

results. What do these results indicate?

The college staffis practicing what was learnt in these programmes such as,

Gardening techniquestaught are being practiced in college herbal garden.

National Seminar on ‘Modern trends in Home Science’ was Organizedand its

proceeding were published.

The college staff is making use of automation in submitting all results to university,

maintaining studentrecords and students attendance online.

The college has collaborated with other institutions by signing MOUs.

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required Please identify the problems

encountered and resources required to implement the practice.

The main problem encountered while implementing this practice was the time constrain for

the conduct of the program and managing it with teaching.

Owing to time constraint and interface, the gap between academia and industries could not

be adequately bridged.

Faculty could be provided hands-experience in the industries.

Interdisciplinary and socio- economic developmental research couldbe given more exposure.

More incentives could be given to the teachers and resource persons to attract greater

participation.

Greater facilities and incentives could be given for research activities - publications of

books and papers in reputed journals.

7.4 Contribution to environmental awareness / protection.

Van Mahotsava was celebrated . His Excellency Hon' Governor Punjab and Haryana,

Cum Administrator UT Chandigarh, Prof Kaptan Singh Solanki planted a sapling of

"LaxmiTaru" followed by plantation of 110 saplings of ornamental trees by students

and staff of the college.

Students of the environment committee participated in inter college competitions at

Postgraduate Government Girls College, Sector 11, Chandigarh on occasion Rajiv

Gandhi AkshayUrja Divas. Shreya won the first prize in slogan writing competition in

this event.

Hands on workshop on Capacity Building on Gardening Techniques and Practice for

Malies and Environment committee under RUSA scheme was held on 15th

December,

2016.

Use of Tertiary water to irrigate the college lawns and plants has been started to

conserve potable water.

Environment cell

A 90 KWp roof top solar photovoltaic power plant was installed in the college by CREST. It

was inaugurated by Hon' Governor Punjab and Haryana, Cum Administrator UT Chandigarh,

Prof Kaptan Singh Solanki in July, 2016. This plant is capable of producing 360 Units of

power per day, amounting to a cost of Rs 54000. An amount of Rs 73 lacs was invested by

the administration for its installation.

7.5 Whether environmental audit was conducted?

Page 46: GOVERNMENT HOME SCIENCE COLLEGE SECTOR-10, …homescience10.ac.in/storage/pages/iqac-aqar/GHSC-10-IQAC-AQAR-… · Chandigarh - Chandigarh Union Territory 160010 homescience-chd@nic.in

No formal audit was conducted this year although counting of perennial trees and shrubs

has

been done in the previous years.

7.6 Any other relevant information the Institution/Department wishes to add. (For

example SWOT Analysis)

a. Strengths

College undoubtedly attracts the best students from all over.

Syllabi for CBCS has been formulated.

Dedicated faculty and the strength of college include ‘beyond the classroom’

instruction as well.

Digital literacy- entrepreneurial skills were developed via workshops and start up

ventures.

Formal MoUs have been signed with following seven organizations for mutual

benefit.

i. NGO, Yuvsatta.

ii. Wisteria Housing Pvt. Ltd.

iii. Consumer Association, Chandigarh.

iv. Regional Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (RCED).

v. Arisudana Industries, Ludhiana

vi. Voluntary Health Association of Punjab.

vii. State legal service authority, Chandigarh.

Automation of the Campus has been initiated for effective Management. The College has

purchased e-campus management software at the cost of Rs. 7.5 lakh, which has aided in

faster and smooth processing of online admission, fee collection, availability of attendance

of students on website, notice to defaulters and online viewing of marks, to name a few . As

a result of this software the fee collection was not done manually and the students had the

liberty to deposit it at any e-centre of the city.

b. Weakness

Need sufficient regular teaching and non-teaching staff for best teaching and

practical classes.

The facilities we have are limited in terms of conference centres, seminar rooms, a

large enough auditorium, well equipped, automated office.

Lack of minor/ major projects.

c. Opportunities

In house production and sale of produce and products can be undertaken to a

greater extent.

47

The College is well placed to take advantage of the various schemes offered by

UGC for research, development and upgradation of facilities.

There is scope for starting new courses.

d) Threats

Stiff competition from other colleges offering courses which have more job

opportunity and placement.

8. Plans of Institution/Department for next year

Syllabi for Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for B.Sc.(Hons.) Home Science and

B.Sc.(Hons.)Fashion Designing. III and IV Semester to be developed.

More research proposals to be submitted to different funding agencies.

Execution of plans under infrastructure grant of RUSA for construction, renovation

and procurement of equipments.
