7.3 Give two Best Practices of the Institution/Department
Give details of any two best practices which have contributed to better academic and
administrative functioning of the university.
1. Title of the Practice: Installation of roof top solar photovoltaic power plant in the
college.
2. Objectives of the Practice:
What are the objectives / intended outcomes of this “best practice” and what are the
underlying principles or concepts of this practice?
Realizing the fact that solar energy offers clean, green and inexhaustible energy, an
attempt was made to harness solar energy by installation of rooftop photovoltaicsolar
system. It has been proven that it is ideal for residential and commercial
establishments and Installation of solar panels is a one-time cost and requires very
little maintenance annually to ensure its working at maximum capacity.
It has been shown to be one of the most secured energy generation procedures as there
are zero emissions of harmful elements. A solar photovoltaic module is the most silent
producer of energy as the photovoltaic cells do not produce any kind of noise while
generating electricity.
Government Home Science College AQAR 2016-17
42
The college aims to promote renewable energy through its photovoltaic plant which
will address both economic and social concerns.
India plans to derive 15% of the power from renewable energy sources by 2020. In
order to meet this target, an initiative was taken by our college to produce electricity
while concentrating on solar power for renewable energy.
3. The Context.
What were the contextual features or challenging issues that needed to be addressed in
designing and implementing this practice
The global trend toward renewable energy is not just a market shift within the energy
industry, but a broad re‐orientation of society as we move into the future. The sudden increase
in the price of oil, uncertainties associated with its supply and the adverse impact on the
balance of payments position and identifying energy self-sufficiency was a major driving
force which led to the establishment of photovoltaic plant for new and renewable energy in
the college, It was an obvious choice for ensuring energy security, access and continuous
provision of power. Photo voltaic solar energy system is converting sunlight into electricity
without connecting to local utility grids. This renewable energy project is playing an
important role in addressing energy deficit and energy access problem being faced by various
institutions.
4. The Practice
Describe the practice and its uniqueness in the context of India’s higher education. What
were the constraints / limitations, if any, faced?
A 90 KWp roof top solar photovoltaic power plant was installed in the college by Chandigarh
Renewal Energy and Science and Technology Department, Chandigarh Administration. The
plant is capable of producing 360 Units of power per day, amounting to a cost of Rs 54000.
An amount of Rs 73 lakhs was invested by the administration for its installation. The
photovoltaic plant was inaugurated by Honourable Governor of Punjab and Haryana, Cum
Administrator UT Chandigarh.
5. Evidence of Success
Provide evidence of success such as performance against targets and benchmarks, review
results. What do these results indicate?
Renewable energy use is on the rise globally. Installation of roof top solar photovoltaic power
plant has led to modest growth in the region’s renewable energy industry. It has lead to
energy security, clean air in association with the development of renewable energy. The plant
situated in college is producing 360 Units of power per day, amounting to a cost of Rs 54000.
6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required Please identify the problems
