PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

Our Mission: Knowing that all things in this world are gifts of God, presented to us so that we can know God more easily and make a return of love more readily; recognizing God as the Origin of Life, the giver of freedom and the source of all that we have and are and will be; knowing ourselves to be recipients and caretakers of God’s many gifts; grateful for all that we have received; eager to cultivate our gifts out of love for God and one another. The Mission of the Good Shepherd Parish is to give witness and to celebrate the Risen Christ’s Presence in the life of each person. To accomplish this goal we ask our parishioners and visitors to recommit themselves to being disciples of Jesus and in so doing we will strengthen our community and help one another to live our faith in the fullest possible way. “in necessary things, unity; in doubtful things, freedom; and in all things, charity.” Augustine

Good Shepherd Parish Community Supper

Come enjoy good company and a great meal! Thursday night from 5-6pm.

St. Augustine’s Hall, VH

Sunday, February 2, 2020 Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

Gospel: (Luke 2:22, 25-32) When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you may let your servant go / in peace, according to your word, / for my eyes have seen your salvation, / which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: / a light for revelation to the Gentiles, / and glory for your people Israel.” Reflection

Patience is one of the traditional fruits of the Holy Spirit. Clearly, Simeon patiently let the Holy Spirit take charge of his life, not seeking to find peace through his own efforts but instead waiting for peace to find him. Have faith that the Holy Spirit is guiding us in all that we do. May we all have the patience of Simeon!

New Year’s Resolution This year - 2020, we encourage you to make a New Year’s resolution that will make a big difference for you and Good Shepherd Parish: commit to consistent giving. This can be difficult, but we have a tool that will make it just a bit easier. Those who give online tend to give more and give consistently. Through our secure online giving program, accessible from our website, you can set up recurring or one-time gifts, contribute to specific funds, and see your giving history at anytime.

Look for the link on our church website (www.goodshepherdmv.com) When you create a login, your gift history will be stored so that you can access it at anytime. This will allow you to accurately assess how much you’re giving to what so that you can make informed decisions and plan your future gifts. It also helps us in the church office; there’s much less processing for online gifts than for envelope gifts! You can use online giving for your regular tithes or to contribute to special funds. If you would like more info. on this program & how to set it up, please call Beth at the office 508-693-0342.

What is Stewardship? A Path to Holiness Stewardship is a way of life, a life of accountability and responsibility acknowledging God as Creator and Giver of all. Stewardship involves responsible management of our God-given resources of time, talent, and treasure. It means respecting and sharing our resources as an expression of gratitude to God. It reminds us that we are the administrators, not the owners, of our assets. Stewards as disciples of Jesus Christ see themselves as caretakers of all God’s gifts. Gratitude for these gifts is expressed in prayer, worship, offering and action by eagerly sharing our gifts out of love for God and one another. Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus. Stewardship is not just a program, or a method of fundraising, it is a way of thanking God for all His blessings by returning a portion of the time, talent, and treasure we have each received. Stewardship is a path to holiness. It makes us more like Christ who came not to be served, but to serve. It is a grateful awareness that all we have and all we are comes freely from God. When we offer our lives back to God in love, He blesses that generosity a hundredfold. Christian stewardship can be identified by several meaningful characteristics; the most important is that it strengthens our relationship with God. It is a way of life, not a program that has a beginning and an end. Stewardship calls us to share a portion of all that we have so that the Good News of Jesus Christ may be shared with those who do not know Him. Many times in Scripture we are reminded to be generous with our time, talent and treasure. We are called to take care of others, to share what we have, to return a portion of our gifts to God. We are reminded to do this with purity of intention and according to our means. Even in today’s Gospel, Simeon reminds us who we are: Now Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people, Israel.” Guided by prayer and a relationship with Jesus, each Catholic makes a decision to live out the Christian life as a good steward. This decision is an intentional act meant to thank God for all of His blessings. Once a year, each Catholic household should plan how the stewardship of time and talent will be a part of its lifestyle and how the stewardship of treasure will be a part of its budget. This plan is then lived throughout the year in a regular, consistent manner. In what ways might you become more involved in our parish ministries? What are you willing to give?

Three Ways to Give: Time, Talent & Treasure

Stewardship of time involves the realization that no one “owns” time. Each of us is given only so much of it – planning a schedule that has time to work, rest, play, and pray is vital to our physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual beings. In our busy society, time is one of the most precious possessions we have. How we spend our time is perhaps the clearest indication of our progress in a life of Christian discipleship. Stewardship of talent calls us to search out those talents, nurture them, and share them with others. Jesus’ first and greatest commandment is “To love our God with our whole heart, our whole soul and our whole mind.” We do that by using our God-given talents for the benefit of others. Doing that brings us to His second greatest commandment, “To love our neighbor, as we love ourselves.” Stewardship of talent shows us the way to a spiritual life—a oneness with God through reaching out to others. Stewardship of treasure reminds us that our money and possessions (our treasure) are gifts from God that we are asked to care for and generously share. It is important to share our money and material possessions for two reasons: first, because all the good things that God made (including money) are meant to be shared; and second, because each of us has a need to give. We need to give our money to individuals and families in need, to the Church, and to other worthwhile charitable organizations because giving money is good for the soul and because we need to return thanks to a loving God for our many blessings. We often hear the Biblical reference that tithing consists of 10% of our income. Certainly that is the ultimate goal and a wonderful one. Realistically, most of us start below that and keep trying to increase our giving little by little. All are encouraged to give proportionately to our income and our blessings, and to move up to (and beyond) 10%. The most important point is to set a goal and work toward it. A suggested stewardship formula for 10% of treasure is: 5% to our church; 1% to our diocese (for helping further the broader mission of the church and supporting causes the Bishop is called to support); and 4% to organizations and charities that God calls you to support. Five percent may seem like a large allocation to our parish. Remember, we are the nonprofit community that helps you carry out Christ’s mission. Any special collections taken at GSP are already given to the diocese. Look at some of what our parish does—it provides space, accommodations and support for worshiping, celebrating sacraments, evangelizing, learning, ministering and gathering in community; as well as the school backpack program and MV Food Baskets free food distributions, the starting point for the CROP Walk in Oct., the Red Stocking work in Dec.; meeting spaces for 12-step recovery programs year-round; Community Suppers on Thursdays from Jan.-Mar., a Houses of Grace warming center for the homeless from Nov.-Mar six days per week, and an overnight winter shelter on Wed. from Jan.-Mar. This all requires payment of the same kind of expenses that a home or business has – mortgage, insurance, utilities, maintenance, etc. It requires paying for the expertise of those who teach, minister and run the day-to-day operations, and the generosity of many volunteers. Reflection Questions: What resources, talents, and abilities has God given me? Do I use them in service to others? If I am to work to be an effective Christian steward, with the help of God’s grace, what will it cost me in terms of personal sacrifice and hardship? Am I willing to do this? How can I be of help to others in recognizing and using the gifts that they’ve been given?

Page 8 - 921

Sickness is a fact of human life and experience. Like death itself, it makes no distinction among persons confronted by its grasp. We read in the Gospels about numerous occasions when Jesus reached out to those who were sick and offered them courage, healing, strength and peace. He likewise invited and directed his Apostles to do the same, a practice that continues in the Catholic Church to the present day. The ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ and his Apostles to the sick and suffering is the foundation and origin of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Just as the Sacrament of Penance is intended for the healing and peace of the soul, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is intended for the healing and peace of the body and mind. Moments of mental or physical illness can be times of crisis. They can be a time of loss and pain, but also a time of insight and growth. Our loving God wants to be a part of our lives, including our times of suffering and struggle. He wants to share His life with us. His presence and support often comes in and through the Church—our faith community, especially through the sacraments. In the case of an illness, that support comes in the form of the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick (cf. CCC 1511). And, as the ritual clearly states, the focus is life, health, and well-being. But we must remember that a part of the fullness of life is our spiritual lives with God, which begun at Baptism and will inevitably lead to death and resurrection (cf. CCC 1523).

For many of us, the Anointing of the Sick is seen as “the final blessing” and prayer for a person at the moment of death. And while there are always spiritual benefits to the reception of the sacraments, it is highly recommended that the sacrament of the anointing of the sick be celebrated while the patient is conscious and aware of the prayers and support of the faith community that surrounds them. It enables them to enter into the prayer more fully and thus can greatly benefit from the administration of the sacrament. This would include, but is not limited to, the following situations: Seriously ill - Prior to undergoing surgery - A decline in physical and mental health -Advanced age, even when no serious illness is present - Sick children (who have sufficient use of rea-son) - Those whose health is impaired by an accident or chronic illness of disease. Clearly recognizing that human frailty is a part of the reality of life, our loving God and His Church desires to be with us through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to strengthen us and support us on our life journey.
