He hired veteran architect Pete Dye and a young Jack Nicklaus to craft Sea Pines’ third and final course in the middle of 400 acres of lanky pine trees, sandy soil and coastal lagoons.

As snowbirds make their way back to Westchester County, Long Island and the Hamptons from points south, tee sheets open for the season, and golf sweaters make their first appearances of the new year.

22 • North Dallas Fore-ty Who shot J.R was once the proverbial question in and around Dallas. And just as the eponymous series has made a comeback on prime time television, the golf scene in Big D is also regurging. The city is growing its reputation as a golf getaway replete with high-end, resort quality courses and daily fee gems.

24 • Resort Report: PGA National Resort by Andy ReistetterMy first Honda Classic was five years ago. Like the cars of its sponsor, the first tournament of the Florida Swing is one of the highest quality and classiest tournaments on the PGA TOUR. The golf course, the tradition and heritage of the event, the competitive field and of course a fabulous resort open to all tournament patrons, combine to make being at the Honda Classic something special. Don’t miss the concert and fireworks on both Friday and Saturday nights, they are truly spectacular!

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Florida Golf Alli-ance – a collaboration of leading organizations representing all segments of the state’s golf in-dustry – celebrated “Florida Golf Day” at the State Capitol.

Members of the Florida Golf Alliance met with the House of Representatives and Senate to discuss the importance of the golf industry and expansion of related tourism.

Based on a 2007 study by SRI International, the state’s direct golf economic impact is ap-proximately $7.5 billion a year, supporting more than 167,000 jobs and $4.7 billion in annual wage income. Florida is home to about 1,200 public and private golf course facilities, more than any other state in America.

Florida Golf Day featured attendees from leading industry organizations. The PGA of America, PGA TOUR, LPGA, USGA, Club Managers Association of America, National Golf Course Owners Association, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, World Golf Hall of Fame, World Golf Foundation, The First Tee, Florida Golf Course Superin-tendents Association, Florida Turfgrass Associa-tion, Florida Chapter of Club Managers Asso-

ciation of America and Florida State University PGM Program were all represented.

“Florida’s golf industry has a direct bearing on jobs, commerce, economic development and tax revenues for the state,” says Steve Mona, CEO of the World Golf Foundation, adminis-trator of GOLF 20/20 and the Florida Golf Al-liance.

Congressional members also heard from Susie Doyens, Special Olympics Global Mes-senger from Rotonda West, Fla. Doyens has won more than 180 medals and credits golf as having a huge impact on her life.

“Not very long ago, I was unable to speak in front of others except my parents,” says Doyens. “I am shy but I love Special Olympics and golf so much, I wanted to share my joy with every-one.”

An interactive swing zone was set up in the Capitol Courtyard and staffed by North Flori-da PGA and LPGA Professionals. In addition, House and Senate members competed in a charity putting contest. The Senate won 12-11 and a $500 contribution was made to The First Tee chapter in Tallahassee.

“It’s a great excuse to get outside, celebrate golf in Florida and the incredible economic impact it has in the state,” says Senator Aaron Bean representing Florida District 4, which in-

cludes Duval and Nassau counties. In total, Florida will host 17 professional

golf tournaments in 2013: five PGA TOUR, two Champions Tour, one Web.com Tour, one LPGA Tour, five Symetra Tour, and three Leg-ends Tour events.

Florida’s golf industry has a charitable im-pact of $312 million annually, raised through local outings and contributions from profes-sional golf events. Beneficiaries include Miami Children’s Hospital, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Baptist Children’s Hospital, Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, The First Tee National School Program, Boy Scouts of America, the American Red Cross, the Alzheimer’s Support Network, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southwest Florida, and others.

About GOLF 20/20GOLF 20/20 is a unique collaboration of

all segments of the golf industry, from associa-tions and manufacturers to golf course owners / operators and the media. It was launched in 2000 and is designed to unite and activate the industry around key strategic initiatives that in-crease participation and retention, involvement and interest in the sport.

ORLANDO, FL – February 26, 2013 – If playing the famous Bay Hill golf course at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge has always been on your bucket list, 2013 is the year to make it happen, and you won’t need a bucket of money to realize your dream.

Playing where the PGA TOUR plays just got a little easier with the 2013 Bay Hill Bucket List Golf Package which includes a comfortable lodge guest room, full breakfast, choice of one round of championship golf or a soothing spa treatment. Guests will also receive the trademark umbrella logo pin which is the symbol of the Palmer brand around the world and a special keepsake gift upon check-in.

The Bucket List Package is offered from $171-263 per person, per night based on double occupancy (pricing varies with seasonality), making it surprisingly affordable to plan your trip to this legendary venue that tops so many bucket lists for both the avid and weekend golfer. Reservations can be made by calling (888) 422-9445 or visiting www.BayHill.com.

The history of Bay Hill and this charming golf club is steeped in tradition. The highly regarded golf course was built in 1961, with breathtaking views that sweep across 270 acres along the shores of the Butler Chain of Lakes. The property later became a favorite of legendary golfer Arnold Palmer after he competed in an exhibition match with Jack Nicklaus and Don Cherry on the then unknown course in 1965. On that day Palmer fell in love with Bay Hill and began the quest to make it his own. By 1970, that dream was a reality and Bay Hill has been the winter home of the Palmer family ever since.

In 1979 Palmer successfully created a

tournament that became an official PGA TOUR stop, attracting some of the strongest fields of the season, now called the Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by MasterCard which takes place March 18-24, 2013.

Just like Arnold Palmer himself, Bay Hill is very charismatic and inviting, and for those that love the traditions of the game, Bay Hill is the perfect Bucket List venue. The Lodge features 70 rooms, a full service Spa and Fitness Center, and outstanding cuisine in 3 restaurants. Click here for the complete History of Bay Hill.

Located just minutes from downtown Orlando and area attractions, Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge is the site of the annual Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by MasterCard golf tournament. The 70-room property features 27-holes of golf, the Arnold Palmer Golf Academy, tennis on four Har-tru and two DecoTurf courts, a full service spa and salon, fitness center, a heated Jr. Olympic-size pool, three dining locations, 3 lounges, and 9,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space. Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Dunes Golf & Beach Club and National Golf Management officials announced that both the Dunes Club and National Golf Management’s Grande Dunes Resort Club will host the 47th Annual PGA Professional National Championship, June 22-25, 2014.

The tournament brings a field of 312 PGA club professionals from across the country to compete over four rounds for the Walter Hagen Cup. An added bonus for

the top 20 finishers is an invitation to the 96th PGA Championship in August 2014, at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to welcome the country’s most skilled club professionals for their most prestigious annual event,” said Dunes Club PGA head professional Dennis Nicholl. “We have been fortunate to host a number of high-level professional and amateur golf tournaments in the past and are excited to serve The PGA of America.”

The Dunes Golf and Beach Club, a 1948 masterpiece by Robert Trent Jones Sr. will be the primary host course for the event. It is has been rated the top course in the Myrtle Beach area and one of the top courses in the South for decades.

In order to prepare for the tournament in 2014, the Dunes Club will be undergoing renovations this coming summer headed up by noted architect Rees Jones, a son of Robert Trent Jones Sr.

“Rees and his team spent two days at the club with our Greens Committee and superintendent, discussing the proposed renovations in his master plan for the course,” said Jack Bonner, president of the members of the Dunes Golf & Beach Club.

In order to accommodate the large field for the PGA Club Professional National Championship, a second course is always used for the first two days of play. When the Championship comes to Myrtle Beach, the Grande Dunes Resort Club, one of National Golf Management’s 23 Prime Times Signature Courses will receive that honor.

Instrumental to the process of securing the 2014 PGA Club Professional National Championship was National Golf Management president and PGA

CASA DE CAMPO CHRISTENS PETE DYE GOLF LODGE

LA ROMANA, D.R. – From their earliest days together to the present, Pete Dye and Casa de Campo are inexorably linked. They would have it no other way.

Casa de Campo, featuring the region’s No. 1-ranked golf course, has recognized its golf course architect by naming the popular Golf Lodge in his honor. Dye, who has designed 63 holes at the Caribbean’s leading resort, was introduced to the Dominican Republic in the late 1960s by Gulf and Western, which wanted to invest in the local economy. Among their plans was a world-class golf facility that would launch the country’s tourism industry. Dye was asked to help find the perfect location for this first resort.

He pointed them to the thousands of acres of inhospitable land the company owned near La Romana on the country’s southern coast. Site of the most productive sugar mill in the world, the soil was too dry for growing cane and too sparse for cattle grazing, while also overgrown with thick underbrush, rocks, and cactus. But it was close to the sea, a characteristic of the great Scottish courses Dye had toured just a few years before.

Under Dye’s leadership, some 300 locals worked with hand tools and ox carts to turn the hellish land into a heavenly site for a golf course. The area originally was given the name “Cajuiles,” for the cashew trees that grew on the surrounding mountains. But Dye overheard the workers referring to the sharp coral rock underfoot as “diente del perro,” or “Teeth of the Dog.” The course, which opened in 1971, had its name.

And the new resort had its calling card, a magnificent course along the Caribbean Sea that mixes the best of classic strategic architecture with tropical beauty. Since it

opened, “The Dog” has ranked near the top of every list of the world’s great courses. Dye—who maintains a home on property—continues to play and tweak his design, keeping it up to date both architecturally and agronomically.

The Pete Dye Golf Lodge – 64 individual units – features décor with rich mahogany woods, richly appointed furnishings and a wide array of technological comforts, including flat screen television, complimentary wireless and iPod docking station.

Dye unveiled other courses at Casa de Campo over the decades. The Links—located next to The Dog, and slightly more inland—opened in 1976. It was followed by Dye Fore, three nines that spread big and wide across the cliffs at the other end of the resort, some 300 feet about the Chavon River; the Marina and Chavon nines opened in 2003, the Lakes

nine in 2011. Dye also was responsible for the private La Romana Country Club, which was unveiled in 1990.

Both Teeth of the Dog and The Links were recently renovated under Pete Dye’s guidance. The final nine holes of Dye Fore (Lagos – The Lakes) opened in 2012. As well, more than $40 million has been spent upgrading many other parts of the 7,000-acre resort, including new restaurants, public areas, and the main pool deck.

No surprise, then, that Casa de Campo was recently named the Caribbean’s Leading Golf Resort, for the fifth consecutive year, at the Caribbean and Americas 2012 World Travel Awards. The resort also was named among the top 20 family and top 20 golf resorts by the readers of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report travel newsletter.

HEALTHYGAME by TERRYROSS

Healthy lifestyles have become an ever increasing part of the game of golf. Starting in the professional ranks, where better

performance equates to a bigger paycheck on Sunday, tour players all over the world are light years ahead of a couple of decades ago in terms of how they take care of their bodies and prepare for competition.

While it is pretty much a given that those that play golf for pay are now more in tune than ever into how to capture maximum performance with better training, physical therapy and a healthy diet--that message continues to filter down to the occasional and recreational player.

Although not playing for millions, the average golfer wants to get the most possible out of their game—and to feel as good as possible doing it—and that is why the golf industry like never before has produced many varied ways to stay healthy, develop strength and stamina and prevent or rehab injuries.

In an effort to keep you up to date on some of the latest products,

developments and advancements in maintaining a Healthy Game, here are some items of note:

RumbleRoller™Massage therapy is really nothing new, and more and more

golfers are finding the value of using foam rollers to sooth, stretch and prevent injuries as a muscle maintenance tool between those visits to a massage therapist.

The RumbleRoller™ is a variation of the traditional roller made of foam that physical therapists, trainers and athletes use to relieve muscular pain and tightness (often called “adhesions”, “knots”, or “trigger points”). But conventional foam rollers have smooth surfaces that further compress soft tissue. Rolling on top of them improves blood flow and tissue flexibility, but the effect has its limits, unless you spend a lot of time rolling.

The RumbleRoller was created to perform this therapy more

effectively with a surface that contains specially designed bumps that are firm, but flexible, much like the thumbs of a massage therapist.

As you roll over the top of the RumbleRoller, the bumps continuously knead the contours of the body, gently stretching soft tissue (muscle and fascia) in multiple directions. This action erodes trigger points; helps restore flexibility, and can bring relief to common types of muscular pain. By design, the bumps are firmer than muscle tissue, but much softer than bone, so they deflect out of the way if they contact your spine or other bony protrusions.

With some simple techniques and a little practice, you can control the amount of pressure the bumps apply to your body. The bumps are closely spaced to one another (less than 2 inches apart), so several of them simultaneously contact your body during most exercises. However, with a slight shift of your body, you can reduce your area of contact with the RumbleRoller, which increases pressure and provides deeper, more penetrating relief.

This roller is excellent for getting to some of those hard to fix spots on the body, and the array of instructions and videos that come with it are some of the best around and allow for some very detailed full body treatments that you can do in the privacy of your own home.

With regular use of this roller the knots in your muscles will begin to loosen and the pain will subside. With continued use, a foam roller will help prevent and can reduce chronic pain. The RumbleRoller does a remarkably better job of manipulating muscle tissue and breaking up adhesions, especially for those that need some deep muscle therapy or massage.

The full-size RumbleRoller comes in 6 inch round and 31 inch long size—and is available in two models—regular density and extra-firm, which is 35 percent firmer.

GolferAIDThis is not an energy drink but more like supplement in a can.

Labeled by the manufacturer as a synergy drink, GolferAID contains its own custom blend of vitamins, supplements, herbs and other ingredients uniquely designed to aid various aspects of a golfers’ game, including increased focus, reducing inflammation and muscle fatigue.

Developed by doctors, GolferAID is 100% natural and contains no artificial sweeteners, HFCS, artificial colors, or caffeine. Each 12 oz can contains a mere 45 calories and only nine grams of sugar from its sweetener – organic Blue Agave.

“GolferAID is not another energy drink or a one-size-fits-all sports drink,” notes Company Founder and CEO Orion Melehan. “In fact, our product is notably lacking two of the primary ingredients in those products: caffeine and heavy doses of sugar, neither of which is beneficial to a golfer. GolferAID is loaded with vitamins and supplements that are designed for one purpose only – to improve the golf game from the inside out.”

Melehan also pointed out that his drink also has only nine grams of sugar and is not one of those high fructose sugary drinks that so often appear on those beverage carts found along the golf course.

“Our drink doesn’t have the sodium, artificial sweeteners and artificial coloring that the typical sport drinks has,” he added. “We wanted to design the healthiest drink on the market that is effective—because you are what you drink. The PGA pros who have used our drink and nutritionists all agree that hitting the wall on the back nine has to do with nutrition.”

Melehan’s partner and GolfAID co-founder Aaron Hinde added that the amount of supplements contained in the drink are more than the usual “sprinkling of pixie dust” and are healthy doses that will have an impact.

Page 15: Golf Vacations Magazine March 2013

www.golfvacationsmag.com GolfVacations•March201315

HEALTHYGAME“We put enough supplements (2691 mg of active ingredients and

nutraceuticals) to have an impact,” said Hinde. “Also, with a liquid, you get an 80 percent absorption rate while in pill form you only get 30 to 40 percent absorption into the body. Players have told us they feel more focused and in the zone. It also gives you what you need to balance your electrolytes without adding sodium, which most people get enough of anyway.”

Among the top ingredients in GolfAID are Bilberry (promotes improved visual acuity and balance); Glucosamine (for joint health and flexibility); B vitamins (boosts stamina and endurance); Magnesium (reduces muscle fatigue) and Turmeric/MSM (improves joint and muscle mobility).

The recommended usage is to drink a can of GolfAID, which has a pleasant fruity taste, 15 to 20 minutes before starting a round and then another at the turn. Currently it is available in more than 1500 pro shops nationally and in specialty and convenience stores.

Another Tip for FlexibilityFrank Gustafson, a Level 3 Registered Physical Therapist with

training from the Titleist Performance Institute who works in Palm Desert California, also recommends these stretching exercises to go with your other conditioning and workout routines to aid in getting better rotation—which equals more distance:

1) Sit tall with feet flat on the floor and knees facing forward. Rest a club across your shoulders.

2) Rotate your head and torso to the left until you feel light resistance, careful not to move your hips. Look down the club shaft to see how far you have rotated.

3) Stay rotated to the left and slowly lower your right shoulder toward your right knee. Go as far as you can, creating a slight stretch in the left side. Hold this pose for three seconds.

4) Return to the rotated position from Step Two. Rotate the torso a little further.

5) Complete four repetitions of the above routine. Increasing your rotation a little every time.

6) When you have completed four repetitions, sit tall as and turn to the left through your newly acquired range of motion three times. Take a one minute break then begin the routine on the right side.

You will be amazed by how much rotation you gain in your turn. For more information on Gustafson Physical Therapy and his services,

In 1967, Lowcountry land mogul Charles Fraser was instrumental in pioneering the master-planned community of Sea Pines

Resort, including dozens of homes and two golf courses. He hired veteran architect Pete Dye and a young Jack Nicklaus to craft Sea Pines’ third and final course in the middle of 400 acres of lanky pine trees, sandy soil and coastal lagoons.

The Palmetto State is special to Dye as he says, “Harbour Town Golf Links made my career.” That was 40 years ago when the iconic 18 opened to much fanfare, just in time for a nascent PGA TOUR tournament called the Heritage Classic. The event returns April 18-21 as Swedish stalwart Carl Pettersson will defend his title.

For those traveling to South Carolina for the state’s biggest sporting event of the year, there are an abundance of amazing golf courses on the island for public consumption. April is the perfect time to tee it up on Hilton Head when the tem-peratures are ideal and the spring flora is in bloom. Here is our top five collection to play during this year’s RBC Heritage.

1. Ocean Course (Sea Pines) The Ocean Course at Sea Pines Resort, de-

signed by George Coob, was the first golf course on Hilton Head in 1962. This breathtaking track was redesigned in 1995 by Mark McCumber. Vary-ing sets of tees and strategic placement of lagoons and bunkers make the Ocean Course appealing

for both beginners and advanced golfers. The course also demonstrates a fine example of combining the interest, challenge and strategy of golf with the island’s natural beauty.

2. Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course (Palmetto Dunes)

The Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course was the first design at Palmetto Dunes Resort and named South Carolina’s “Golf Course of the Year” in 2003. Consis-tently ranked as one of the best courses in the Southeast, golfers enjoy wide fairways, expan-sive greens and subtle elevation changes. The seven-mile lagoon system makes for some challenging holes across the 7,000 yard layout, and some of the best scenery on the island with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

3. Oyster Reef Golf Club (Hilton Head Plantation)

When Oyster Reef Golf Club opened in 1982, it was immediately ranked as one of the “Top 25 New Courses in America.” Playing to more than 7,000 yards with a 139-slope rating from the tips, this Rees Jones design features a clever layout. Accentuated with well-placed bunkers, numerous dogleg fairways and strategically located mounds, Oyster Reef continues to be a place where golfers go to look for a challenge. A pure golf experience, the course is also considered one of the most visually appealing courses in Lowcountry.

4. Golden Bear Golf Club (Indigo Run) Opening in 1993, this Jack Nicklaus-

designed golf course was quickly recognized as one of the top-rated layouts on an island among other top-flight designs. Settled on a gorgeous landscape of gently rolling terrain, thick woodlands and a chain of beautiful lagoons, the Golden Bear Golf Club delivers a sensational golf experience. At just more than 7,000 yards from the back tees, the course winds through the pristine and elegant community of Indigo Run and offers fairways with generous landing zones and plenty of greenside recovery room. The championship golf course is all finesse and strategy, and a must-play for both locals and visitors alike.

5. Sanctuary Golf Club (Cat Island)Located on Cat Island, Sanctuary Golf

Club was originally designed by George W. Cobb, and was refined by Jeff Brauer in 2008. Stretching over 6,600 yards, the course offers stunning landscapes with large rolling greens, beautiful vistas and tree-lined fairways designed and shaped from the natural angles of the Lowcountry. Featuring a stunning 18 holes of play, the course uses strategic bunker placement and wonderfully defined fairways creating beauty and challenge on many holes.

Golf in New York City gets into full swing this spring, oftentimes early than many golfers think. As snowbirds make their way back to Westchester County, Long Island and the Hamptons

from points south, tee sheets open for the season, and golf sweaters make their first appearances of the new year.

The Empire State is one of the most golf-rich states in the U.S., as it is home to many of the most storied venues in the country. And you won’t find a more diehard lot of duffers in the contiguous 48, a cohort willing to brave the elements in the name of the ancient game.

Nowhere is this more evident than at Pound Ridge Golf Club, the only Pete Dye designed golf course in the state.

Dye is known as the “mad scientist” behind golf cathedrals such as TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course, Harbour Town Golf Links, Whistling Straits, and The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort.

But until 2008, Dye didn’t have a single layout in New York. That changed when Ken Wang, a M.I.T. graduate and brother of fashion designer Vera, commissioned Dye to create Pound Ridge Golf Club an hour north of Manhattan in Westchester County. Wang specifically sought out Dye, comparing his courses to “standing in the middle of a giant math problem conjured up by a master of geometry.”

Dye didn’t disappoint, transforming 172 acres of craggy cliffs, streams and wooded hills into one of the most visually stunning golf experiences in the U.S. Playing 7,165 yards from the back tees, with a

par of 72 and a slope of 146, Pound Ridge is a true “player’s course.” Since opening, Pound Ridge has garnered enough accolades to

pack Yankee Stadium. Golf Magazine recently named it the No. 1 “U.S. Open-Worthy Public Course,” and Golfweek named it one of the top courses in New York.

Golf pilgrims from South Florida have taken notice, according to course officials who track golfer origins. A Pound Ridge, NYC adventure has become a favorite of Dye disciples hoping to solve his lone Empire State puzzle.

For those who prefer not to bring their clubs, Pound Ridge rents current generation, high end clubs and shoes More information and tee times: www.poundridgegolfclub.com, 914-764-5771.

Who shot J.R was once the proverbial question in and around Dallas. And just as the eponymous series has made a come-

back on prime time television, the golf scene in Big D is also regur-ging. The city is growing its reputation as a golf getaway replete with high-end, resort quality courses and daily fee gems.

And as any business traveler knows, hundreds of direct flights, daily make getting to Dallas as easy as a flat three foot putt. The winter months bring wide temperature swings, but “have clubs will travel” types who can break away on short notice can enjoy highs in the 60s and even 70s on occasion.

Where to PlayOld American Golf ClubOld American is the work of acclaimed designer Tripp Davis

and PGA TOUR star and hometown hero Justin Leonard. Inspired by the ‘Golden Age’ of golf course architecture (1911 - 1937), Old American’s natural contours, hazard styles, native grasses and green shapes were influenced by such masterpieces as Shinnecock Hills, National Golf Links, Prairie Dunes and Crystal Downs.

The course is quickly becoming known as “the place the pros play.” Thanks to a 7,000-yard-plus layout with the chops to host

by ANDY REISTETTER and MERRI DANIEL

Golf Writer Andy Reistetter and Merri Daniel accepted an invitation to visit PGA National Resort & Spa as a prelude to this year’s Honda Classic. At the time the Champion Course was a freshly over-seeded Irish sea of green so a round of golf on the newly renovated FAZIO course was in order. So what is classic about the Honda Classic? Surely the splendid resort itself is part of the answer. Join Reistetter as he recalls the Rory-Tiger showdown in 2012 and enjoy Merri’s Magnificent Moments of their visit to one of America’s premier resorts.

My first Honda Classic was five years ago.

While seeing Ernie Els reemerge as a champion in 2008 after three seasons without a win, the Sunday showdown between Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods was even more memorable. Woods was at his best shooting the lowest final round score of his career- an 8-under par 62. After eagling the 18th and posting a 10-under tournament score, the spotlight was on Rory to see how he would handle the pressure, especially playing the famed “Bear Trap” holes Nos. 15-16.

The youngster from Northern Ireland did just fine posting a 1-under par 69. With the victory he surpassed Luke Donald as the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking. Though Rory has slipped to as low as No. 3 after winning the Honda, he regained and has held the No. 1 slot since his PGA Championship at Kiawah island last August. From Ernie to Rory with Y.E. Yang, Camilo Villegas, and Rory Sabbatini in between there have been five consecutive international champions. The first eight tournaments on the PGA TOUR this year have been won by Americans. There are two interesting trends colliding at the Honda Classic this week.

Uncle George and nephew Tom Fazio designed three of the four golf courses at PGA National in the early 1980s- The Champion, the Haig (originally named after Walter Hagen) and The Squire (for Gene Sarazen). Arnold Palmer designed the last course on site, his namesake The Palmer in1984. Jack Nicklaus has redesigned The Champion twice, once in 1990 and again in 2002.

A third generation Fazio recently redesigned the Haig- Tom Fazio II, son of designer Jim (brother of Tom) is known as Tommy and is a model Fabio look-a-like. The Haig was renamed the FAZIO. We may be getting into a whole new era in golf where golf course architects replace prominent legends of golf with respect to the naming rights of golf courses.

The Fazio is fun to play. The most significant changes in the modernization occurred on the 15th and 17th holes, with the contouring of the greens and the bunkering. Interestingly, the par-3 5th hole and the caped 6th hole swing close by the PGA of America Headquarters. There is a long standing relationship and tradition between the resort and the club professional organization. This is evidenced by the playing of the 1983 Ryder Cup, 1987 PGA Championship and 19 years (ending in 2000) of the Senior PGA Championship on The Champion Course.

While I have played the golf courses and experienced the professional competition of the Honda Classic it wasn’t until I stayed at the PGA National Resort & Spa that I truly understood that classic meant first and highest quality. The freshness from a recent $100 million revitalization can easily be seen by tournament spectators in terms of the pool area,

lobby bar and restaurants. Resort guests experience the magic in the floor-to-ceiling makeover of each of its 379 guest rooms.

There are several questions to ask at this week’s Honda Classic. Will there be another Rory-Tiger showdown? Will an American or the 6th consecutive international player win? If so, who will that be? When will you make a reservation to experience all there is to experience at the PGA National Resort & Spa?

Merri’s Magnificent Moments1. I loved the individually-themed

“specialty” accommodations that are unique, trend-setting and superb! Andy wants to come back with his guy friends and stay in the “Man Cave,” a sophisticated media room

with large screen HD TVs to watch sporting events. I wonder who has that room for the Honda Classic. Please invite us!

2. There are two “Spa Suites” with a private spa area complete with a comfortable professional table for in-room massages and facials. Large soaking tubs and walk-in showers complete the experience with luxurious king-size beds and comfortable sofas and chairs in a spacious living area. The “Bridal Spa” for an extraordinary romantic retreat.

3. Our round included playing with Jim King, a former professional golfer who at age 78 was still a scratch golfer and a unique golfing personality. He entertained us with so many stories from his years on tour.

4. The pool area is extraordinary and we enjoyed soaking in the hot tub after our round of golf. Andy tells me it is an awesome place to watch the fireworks and I can’t wait to see them.

5. Our host Karen Cantor, Public Relations Manager, gave a wonderful tour of the property and showed us all the recent renovations that have been done inside and outside. Her spirited conversation over breakfast well represented the attitude and perspective of this classic resort. There is so much more to experience we can’t wait to return for another visit!

SWEETSTUFF

Titleist, with its flagship line of Pro V1 and Pro V1x premium golf balls, has once again improved on what has become the

most popular ball on the professional tours and with everyday golfers.

Since the company introduced this model more than a decade ago that heralding the age of the solid-core distance ball for the better player, it has tweaked and improved just about every-thing about it, and the 2013 edition of the Pro V1 line does not disappoint with some marked improvements in both distance and feel.

The new Pro V1 is the softest version yet in this line with more spin, in addition to an im-proved Urethane Elastomer cover and paint sys-tem that results in longer lasting durability while retaining a whiter, brighter finish. The Pro V1x has a somewhat harder feel but is softer than previous versions; has a new, more durable cov-er and delivers the best distance among Titleist’s performance balls for the better players.

The 2013 Pro V1 has longer distance due to lower driver and long game spin, and a shallower angle of descent that produces more roll. Even the long irons and hybrids demonstrate more distance than with previous versions of this ball. The 2013 Pro V1x gets even more distance with its deep downrange peak trajectory, tight ball flight and outstanding spin control. Both models maintain their outstanding Drop-and-Stop con-trol, providing all golfers with excellent short-game scoring performance that contributes to shooting lower scores.

The 2013 Pro V1 and Pro V1x have been tested and validated by golfers at every level of the game to resounding positive feedback and success. Among the early converters in the pro-

fessional ranks to the new golf balls were Adam Scott (Pro V1) and Luke Donald (Pro V1x), each player winning convincingly on the worldwide professional tours after putting the 2013 model in play.

“Golfers want exceptional distance in their long game and the best scoring performance for their short game,” said Mary Lou Bohn, Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball Marketing and Communications. “Yet they also value longer lasting durability. With our improved Urethane Elastomer cover system, golfers will not only experience an aerodynamically more consistent flight, they will notice their new Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball looking new and whiter longer.”

With changes in the core technology and softer compression, the new Pro V1 has an im-proved flight pattern for greater distance.

“Due to the softer ZG process core technology, the new Pro V1 has a lower, more controlled flight with lower driver and long iron spin that results in a shallower angle of descent, providing golfers with even more distance.” said Bill Morgan, Senior Vice President, Golf Ball R&D, Acushnet Company, the parent company of Titleist. “That softer compression also makes this the best-feeling Pro V1 yet and gives golfers an even greater sense of control with shots into and around the green. This is the softest Pro V1 we’ve ever made.”

A responsive ionomeric casing layer and spherically-tiled 352 tetrahedral dimple design also contribute to the new Pro V1’s high perfor-mance. The 352-dimple pattern has five differ-ent dimple sizes and three axes of symmetry that help produce a penetrating ball flight that holds its line in the wind.

The new Pro V1x has a four-piece multi-component design and utilizes a new, very soft ZG process center within its dual core to main-tain lower driver spin for greater distance while increasing iron spin for control into the green.

Pro V1x also produces a slightly different launch condition than the prior generation mod-el, and will fly a little bit lower with a tight ball flight, yet still maintain a deep downrange peak trajectory.

“Player feedback on the distance and flight of the new Pro V1x has been extremely positive. These players like that Pro V1x flies higher than a Pro V1 golf ball,” Morgan said.

Sunglasses for golfers are much more than a fashion accessory these days as the med-ical community has put them on par with

sunscreen as a must-have protection for spend-ing hours in the sun.

The problem with sunglasses over the years has been that although their value in protect-ing the eyes has been undisputed, golfers—es-pecially at the professional levels—have shied away from them at times because of the loss of detail and clarity when playing—thus impact-ing their game.

Over the past few years the health advan-tages of sunglasses have led more players at all levels to don shades as protection—especially with the increased awareness and the improve-ment in the technology that made lenses more user friendly while playing.

Sundog Eyewear has taken golf sunglasses to a whole new level with the introduction of a product that combines three cutting-edge technologies in one with the introduction this year of the Laser and Evo lines that combine Polarization, Photochromatic and Mela-Lens™ in a single lens for the first time. Kind of like sunscreen for your eyes.

In one pair of sunglasses, golfers can enjoy the benefits of a Photochromic lens (lighten-ing and darkening depending on ultra violet light intensity), the glare reduction of a Polar-ized lens, and the protection and visual clarity of Mela-Lens™ technology, which was devel-oped by Sundog. The Mela-Lens™ acts as sun-screen for the eyes and offers golfers superior vision protection to help improve performance. “Mela” is an abbreviation for Melanin, a natu-rally produced pigment that protects the eyes and skin from dangerous UV and “blue” light.

It utilizes synthetic melanin to filter blue light and block ultra-violet light for the ultimate

Page 29: Golf Vacations Magazine March 2013

www.golfvacationsmag.com GolfVacations•March201329

SWEETSTUFFin protection and performance. The benefits are enhanced definition, superior glare reduc-tion, maximum visual clarity, no color distor-tion, and soothing visual comfort.

In addition to being an extremely comfort-able sunglass, the Laser and Evo styles are very easy on the eyes visually because of their clar-ity and the fact that they allow more light to get through in shady or indoor areas and less under bright sunlight when a darker shade is called for. This eliminates much of the annoy-ing need to take off and put on the classes—like they aren’t even there.

Taking glasses on and off repeatedly makes the eyes more tired in having to adjust to vary-ing light condition. Because the lens does the adjusting, this feature helps keeps the eyes fresher during a round of golf, something that is just as important as any other aspect in help-ing one play better.

With more than 30 years of industry ex-perience, Calgary-based Sundog Eyewear had been a leader in sport sunglasses that are avail-able in thousands of fine golf shops and retail-ers worldwide.

The 2013 Sundog Eyewear Collection fea-tures 22 exclusive styles ranging from sleek performance to fashion forward casual models ideal for both on and off the golf course. Also new to the Collection are the exciting Draft, Bolt, Illusion, Ellwood, and Mach models, plus Prelude designed specifically for women.

LPGA star Paula Creamer, one of the company’s best known professional spokesper-son, now has six styles in her signature Paula Creamer Collection with the addition of her sleek new Passion model. Since the debut of her first Collection in 2007, the nine-time win-ner on the LPGA Tour has been instrumental in designing her Sundog Eyewear.

One of the most talked-about golf shoes on the market for 2013 is the new adizero line of footwear from adidas

Golf that is not only a very stylish-looking shoe, but has a feel that is truly revolutionary, as the company says.

It is not only one of the most comfortable shoes on the market, but the whole idea of a su-per light golf shoe is something that adidas has taken to an entirely new level with the adizero. You truly feel like you aren’t even walking in shoes—or like you are walking in the clouds.

The new adizero line has been specially built on the principle that you start with zero and add only what is essential to perform, and with the lightest model weighing in at only 10.6 ounces, the adizero Tour is 38% lighter than the TOUR360 ATV and touts adidas Golf’s thinnest outsole ever at 1.2mm. It’s specially-designed with ultra-light materials to deliver tour-proven performance with outstanding sta-bility on a 10-spike platform. One comparison has shown that this shoe is lighter than some divot tools. The leather is also some of the soft-est you will find.

The key is a new anatomical last and rev-olutionary SPRINTFRAME™ outsole that significantly reduces shoe weight while main-taining comfort and returning energy to each stride. The SPRINTWEB™ internal TPU lay-er provides excellent upper support during lat-eral movements, and a new microfiber leather SPRINTSKIN™ ensures a consistent fit with no water uptake and long lasting durability.

“adidas has set a company-wide mission to be radically light in every athletic category, and we are excited to announce we have delivered on that mission to the sport of golf,” said Bill Price, Vice President of adidas Golf Footwear. “By using only what was absolutely essential in adizero, we are able to give golfers superior fit, super-lightweight comfort and natural stability that results in less fatigue and more energy sav-ings at the end of each round.”

The adizero comes in four colorways: run-ning white / black / vivid yellow; black / white / black; running white / black / dark silver metal-lic; light grey / running white / graphite.

For women, adidas Golf is releasing an adizero Tour model with a six-cleat outsole at only 9.2 ounces, claiming the title as the light-est cleated women’s tour shoe that the com-pany has ever put on the market. Utilizing the revolutionary weight-saving technologies from the men’s adizero, the women’s version incor-porates a sleek, sporty and feminine design that overall helps reduce fatigue down the stretch. The women’s line is offered in three colorways: black / dark silver metallic / passionfruit; run-ning white / running white / passionfruit; and metallic silver / running white / coal.

For more of a sneaker appearance and feel, the adizero Sport is an ultra-responsive golf shoe built on the famed adidas SUPER-

NOVA running last for super lightweight comfort. This shoe is made of superlight, breath-able mesh and microfiber leather construction and is the lightest of the men’s adizero models at only 9.5 ounces, and provides optimal performance on the course with a six-spike SPRINTFRAME™ outsole. Complementing the men’s collection is the women’s adizero Sport weighing-in at 7.8 ounces featuring a spikeless out-sole and a mesh upper construc-tion for ultimate comfort.
