A Message From OurOutgoing Chapter Directors

Hi all, what a colossal year it's been for ON-Q, and what fun we've had with you. So many good times were had in 2015 and so many more are peeping over the horizon in 2016 for you and your friends.

Many events have already been pre-planned by your executive committee so watch the website and newsletter for de-tails. Remember, their success depends on you coming forward to support fun with your buddies. Beside our own fun chapter events like the Summer BBQ, games and movie nights, the Halloween and Christmas Parties and dinners, oh so many dinners, there are a lot of riding and event opportunities to attend. Hopefully some of them should be able to fit into your busy schedules. Americade in Lake George New York is always popular in June, and the Region K rally in Woodstock will be an awesome event (promises to be even better than last year) and so will the Eastern Region L rally in Truro Nova Scotia, and the Western Region J rally in Red Deer Alberta followed by Wing Ding in Billings Montana for those who can make it. No shortage of riding opportunities, including our Wednesday 10 am Hooky Rides, Thursday night after dinner rides, and rides to other chapters breakfasts, etc; Barb and I hope to see you at some of them.Barb and I have thoroughly enjoyed being ON-Q Chapter Directors since 2013, and ACDs before that, but it has come

time for us to step back a bit. Effective the 1st of January 2016 we pass the reins to our ACDs Paul and Sheila Haller. Paul and Sheila and our executive have been very supportive in keeping the Chapter a fun and vibrant place to be and we have no doubt that this will continue and flourish with Paul and Sheila leading the ride to good times. Please sup-port them and continue to bring your fresh ideas forward to make the Chapter a place you want to be, both on and off the road. To that end a couple of executive positions are now open for you to take advantage of to help maintain momen-tum and shape the future of your chapter. Please think about joining the executive team as ACD, Ride Coordinator, Mo-torist Awareness Coordinator or as a member of the Social Team and make your mark on the Chapter.Barb and I have fond memories that will stay with us forever, reminding us of the good times, fun rides, dinners, and

parties we participated in with you. Your involvement whether it be volunteering to host an event, attend an event, lead or join a ride periodically and to come out to enjoy the moment with your friends has been paramount to achieving the GWRRA motto/goal of "Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge". As corny as it may sound to some of you I can relate some or all of the motto to everything we have experienced with you in the past number of years. It has been our privi-lege to lead and pains us to step back, but rest assured we are not going away entirely and look forward to seeing you again soon sometime, somewhere, both in and out of GWRRA. Barb and I thank you for your support, and look forward to joining you in supporting Paul and Sheila as your new

Chapter Directors. We wish you and your families the Best New Year Ever!

Sue and I are active participants of Chapter ON – E in Kitchener Ontario, and are honored to just recently be appointed as District Directors for Region K Ontario. Over the years we have had a lot of fun meeting new friends while riding all around North America and look forward to making many more friends and acquaintances. We are excited and looking forward to visiting all Ontario Chapters in the New Year. As Directors and members of GWRRA we want to promote even more fun for our members. We believe that to continue the success of the Ontario Districts of Region K, it will take a combined effort from all of our chapters and members of GWRRA. Sue and I would be most receptive to any questions or suggestions that anyone may have. Please feel free to send us an e-mail or give us a call at any time, (see particulars below).Remember this is Your Region and Your Chapters; if we all combine our thoughts and suggestions, we can have a lot of fun, socialize with new friends and do what we all like to do, ride.So please pass along your ideas and even your complaints as they are all welcome. Remember our motto is Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. A friend of mine once said that if you are not having any Fun then there is only one person to blame, yourself.Sue and I would like to wish you, your family and friends a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May all your wish-es and dreams come true and the true meaning of Christmas fill your heart and home with happiness all year round. We look forward to seeing you in 2016.

THE HOSPITAL BILLA man suffered a serious heart attack while shopping in a store. The store clerk called 911when they saw him collapse to the floor. Paramedics rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he had emergency open heart bypass surgery. He awakened from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at the Catholic Hospital. A nun was seated next to his bed holding a clipboard loaded with several forms, and a pen. She asked him how he was going to pay for his treatment. "Do you have health insurance?" she asked. He replied in a raspy voice, "No health insurance." The nun asked, "Do you have money in the bank?" He replied, "No money in the bank." Do you have a relative who could help you with the payments?" asked the irritated nun. He said, "I only have a spinster sister, and she is a nun." The nun became agitated and announced loudly, "Nuns are not spinsters! Nuns are married to God." The patient replied, "Perfect. Send the bill to my brother-in-law."

RIDER EDUCATION

While most of us know that it takes about 1 second to recognize and begin to react to a threat ahead of us, it usually takes from 2 to 3 seconds for riders to recognize and begin to react to a change in speed (increase) of the bike in front of them when they are riding in a group. A couple of seconds doesn't sound like much, I'm sure, but while at 2 seconds a small group of bikes can usually manage rather well, at 3 seconds some serious problems result. This is particularly true if there are more than six bikes in the group. The following, I hope, will convince those of you that lead group rides to behave with new caution. At 60 MPH your bike moves 88 feet per second. Assuming that you maintain a 1-second gap between bikes in the group then each is about 88 feet behind the next one. At 70 MPH the gaps would be about 103 feet. A trivial example first - let's say that the lead bike increases speed from 60 MPH to 70 MPH. It takes about 2 seconds to do so if you are casual about it (using an acceleration rate of 7.5 fps/s) though you could do it in half that time. What happens to all the bikes behind that lead bike? Most people, I assume, think that each will, in turn, simply follow suit. That is, each will also accelerate modestly at the rate of about 7.5 fps/s (5 MPH/Sec) and, thus, maintain 'the group'. That is not at all what actually happens. After the first second of modest acceleration by the lead bike the distance be-tween the second bike and the first one has grown from 88 feet to 92 feet and one second later the gap has become 103 feet. By coincidence this is exactly what the new distance between bikes should be while riding at 70 MPH. However, the second bike has not yet even begun to accelerate and is now moving 10 MPH slower than the bike ahead of it. It follows, of course, that the gap between the bikes will continue to grow until the second bike is also moving at 70 MPH - 2 or 3 seconds later. That is, if the second bike realizes that the first one is pulling away from him and begins to accelerate his

own bike within only 2 seconds then he too will be traveling at 70 MPH within another 2 seconds. If it takes him 3 sec-onds to recognize a widening gap and react to it then it will take another 2 seconds for his speed to match the bike ahead of him. In the best case (2 second react/respond time) the gap between the bikes will have grown to 117 feet, and if it took 3 seconds that gap would have grown to 132 feet. Clearly once the speeds are the same the gaps will remain the same. BUT, since the group prefers to travel with a 'one second' gap between bikes, the second bike MUST GO FASTER than the first one for a brief time in order to 'catch up.' If we assume that the riders in this group are conservative and individually elect never to travel more than 5 MPH faster than the bike ahead of them as they are closing their gaps, then the second bike will continue to accelerate for 1 additional second and attain a speed of 75 MPH, while the first one continues at 70 MPH. In fact, the second bike will have to ride for TWO SECONDS at 75 MPH while the first one rides at 70 MPH in order to close the gap to 106 feet, and then he takes 1 more second decelerating to 70 MPH during which the gap between them reduces itself to the desired 103 feet. This little example of the dynamics between just two bikes is trivial in consequence and easy to understand. With modest effort it can be seen, however, to be anything but trivial far-ther back in the pack. Let's look at the third bike in the group. About 2 seconds after the SECOND bike begins to accel-erate the third one follows suit. Three seconds later the gap between the second and third bike has, as expected, become 117 feet. But, because the second bike is traveling at 75 MPH at that time rather than 70 MPH like the first bike, the gap continues to widen and within one more second becomes 128 feet. Clearly the third bike must use more effort to catch up to the second bike than the second bike needed to catch up with the lead bike. Indeed, the third bike will have to accelerate to 75 MPH and will have to maintain that speed for FOUR SECONDS instead of the two required by the second bike in order to close up that gap. WORSE, the next bike will find that the gap he has to close has grown to 132 feet before it begins to shorten and then ONLY IF HE ACCELERATES TO 80 MPH instead of 75. This, because the third bike is traveling at 75 MPH rather than 70 MPH when the gap has reached 132 feet. The gap would be larger still if bike number four merely accelerates to 75 MPH. In a group of only six motorcycles, the last one will find the gap be-tween himself and bike number five to grow to 143 feet before it begins to close. He will have to accelerate to 80 MPH, hold that speed for three seconds, drop to 75 MPH for an additional three seconds, and then finally drop to the group speed of 70 MPH in order for all members of the group to end up with a 1-second gap between them. Further, it will be at least 11 seconds after the lead bike has started to accelerate before the sixth bike does so. Imagine what will happen if during that time the lead bike applies his brakes in anticipation of entering a curve!!!!!!!!!Though this was a trivial example it demonstrates very well what we have all experienced in the past - the 'rubber band' effect. Imagine how PROFOUND this effect becomes when the example changes. For example, imagine what happens at the end of a string of 20 bikes rather than only 6. Or what happens if the lead bike, upon exiting a 35 MPH curve, gooses his bike to 60 MPH as fast as it can get there. There are things that tend to mitigate these problems: Lead bikes can change speed more gradually.Lead bikes can announce speed changes over the CB and, thus, reduce reaction times for all.All bikes in a group can react to changes in speed of bikes that are farther ahead of them than just the one immediately ahead. The members of a group can simply NOT crank their throttles up to excessive speeds just to keep the group spac-ing 'correct'. A good group leader does NOT accelerate within 15 seconds of entering a curve (assuming he has to then slow down before actually entering that curve.) The '1-second between bikes' rule should be abandoned whenever the group is riding 'twisties' - it makes sense only when traveling in a straight line on open highway.Never allow a group to become larger than SIX bikes if even one of the riders is inexperienced with group riding. Never larger than EIGHT bikes even if all are familiar with the riding habits of each other. If you think that the 'rubber band' effect is a problem when accelerating think of what happens during braking!!

R oute 64 from Hanging Dog west is uneventful at first. It is four-lane all the way to Ducktown, a few miles into Tennessee. Here it becomes two-lane through the Cherokee National Forest, following the Ocoee River through a winding mountain gorge. As we round a bend we come upon a group of people sitting about a large pond in rub-

ber rafts. They are not going anywhere so we stop to check it out. The pond is created by a dam which collects the rather meager flow of the river for a couple of hours. When the pond is full enough they open the dam and everybody goes bash-ing down the rapids in the rafts. We later learn that this is where the summer Olympic Kayaking event was held. It will be some time yet before the water is high enough to start the show so we mount up and head down the river. We have located a campground on the map and we want to get situated early so we will have time to see the sights in Chattanoo-ga without worrying about where we will spend the night. As we motor through the turns near the river I notice a dis-tinct squeak whenever I lean right. It seems to be coming from the back end but I cannot tell where. Hoping it will go away, I turn my attention to finding the campground, the location of which is not clear. We pass through Cleveland and begin exploring unmapped roads which seem to lead in the general direction of the symbol on the map. We have left the Smoky Mountains but the terrain is still hilly, near the Tennessee River. A lot of winding roads, small farms and com-muters houses. We round a bend, still squeaking, to see a large red hound dog lying on the pavement in front of a driveway. I bear left

to avoid the carcass, feeling sorry for the owner; I like dogs, especially hounds. As we coast by it suddenly raises its head, one ear still on the ground. It was only sleeping. It fixes us with a suspicious eye as we pass. “What y’all doin on mah road?” When I find it in my mirror it has already assumed its former position.Several random turns later we suddenly come upon a KOA campground. It looks crowded and when we check in at the

office the lady spends some time looking for a vacant site. When we tell her we don’t need much room she points to a spot next to the propane tank. It still costs fifteen bucks but it is too late in the day to complain although we wonder if amotel would have been a better idea. In an hour we have set up the tent and are on our way to Chattanooga, intent on seeing the aquarium there.

The Chattanooga aquarium is impressive; we ascend an elevator for four stories and then begin a spiral walk back down. The trip takes an hour and a half and includes everything that swims: sharks, snapping turtles, anacondas, hun-dreds of fish including some hundred-pound catfish. It is late in the afternoon when we come out. We are hungry and tired so we head back toward the campground. The battlefield at Chickamauga can wait for another trip. When we stop for supper I notice that the squeak is still with us. This is beginning to bug me so when we get back to the tent I decide to get to the bottom of it and proceed to dismantle the back of the bike. After inspecting everything I still cannot identifythe source of the sound so I rub candle wax on every contact point in the mounting system and re-assemble everything. As I finish a fellow camper comes by to look at the bike. He is an employee of Honda and have an interesting conversa-tion during which he tells me about the prototype for an 1800 cc Goldwing which is on the drawing boards. He can’t tell us when it will hit the market though.

At last the daylight fades as the sun drops quickly behind the hills, much more rapidly than back home where the days are noticeably longer. Tomorrow we must head for home again, but we have good week of riding ahead. We crawl into the tent and settle down for the night; if we rise early we can get that just before sunrise experience when southern biking is at its best.

Wingin’ It by Bob Hagerman

Did You Know…..Q: Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?A: When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Be-cause wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since.

Q: Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help?A: This comes from the French word m'aidez -meaning 'help me' -- and is pronounced, approximately, 'mayday.'
