• - An isolated setting where people depend on the authorities of a particular organization
(goffman, macionis,2009)

• All aspects of life of residents are supervised by staff members
• Rules and routines followed and life is standardized

RESOCIALIZATION
• The purpose of total institutions is to control an individuals environment to extremely change their personality
(Macionis,2009)

• AFFECTS OF TOTAL INSTITUTIONS BRING ABOUT POSITIVE CHANGE, SUCH AS REHABILITATION, YET SOME INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCE LITTLE CHANGE CONTINUING TO LIVE DISASSOCIATED WITH SOCIETY AND THE WORLD.
