YOU can be a part of our Goddard Food Pantry
Ministry.
Your continued financial support is vital to our
ministry! We are giving away 60 or more
sacks of groceries each week. We do get
these groceries at discounted prices so your
dollars can go farther if you donate to the church
to help pay for the groceries we buy each week.
Some have called this getting “more
bang for your buck!”
Consider purchasing some powered
milk to donate to our pantry. We
purchase the powdered milk at Wal-
Mart or Neighborhood. There are
10 packages in each box of
powdered milk. We include one package in each
grocery sack. The cost of one box is $9.48
plus .45 tax.
Consider purchasing bathroom tissue to
donate to our Pantry. We include 4 rolls of
bathroom tissue in each sack. None of the
funds donated to the pantry are used to
purchase bathroom tissue. However, one
gracious lady in our church faithfully
donates many rolls of bathroom tissue each
week but we can always use more. The best deal
we have found on bathroom
tissue is shown in the picture
below. These packages cost
$.68 plus tax at Wal-Mart or
Neighborhood.
Save your large grocery paper
bags (approx 12x16) for use in our Food Pantry.
Just bring them to church and place them on the
library table.
Donate your time. Our pantry hours are Wednesday
and Thursday 9 AM to 11:30 AM and 1:00
PM to 3:30 PM. Please consider signing up to
be a substitute worker during any of these times.
Just let Elizabeth Eubanks (629 8698) know or
call the Church Office (785 1415).
Pray for our workers, for the people we help,
and for God’s grace and love to continue to
shine from Goddard to our community!
Thank you so much from all the faithful and caring
Goddard Food Pantry Volunteers!

12 Heat Stroke submitted by: Patsy Cochran, Goddard Health Ministry
"Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and..." HEAT STROKE.
Heat stroke is considered the most severe form of heat injury and needs to be treated as a medical emergency in humans and animals. It can result from a progression of milder form of heat injury, such as heat exhaustion, but a heat stroke can occur without prior symptoms. As a result, brain or internal organ damage and death can occur when an individual's core body temperature is above104 degrees Fahrenheit. It mainly affects people over 50, young healthy athletes having prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity or those performing strenuous exercise in combination with dehydration. SYMPTOMS: Fainting may be the first sign Altered mental status: confusion, agitation, slurred speech, irritability, delirium, seizures and coma. Alteration in sweating: while profuse sweating is characteristic in heat exhaustion, a lack of sweating spells the danger of heat strokes. Nausea and vomiting Flushed skin Rapid, shallow breathing Racing heart Throbbing headache High body temperature TREATMENT: If you think a person is having a heat stroke, call 911, and start cooling the victim to prevent permanent damage while waiting. Take him to a shady area or indoors, remove excess clothing and apply cold water (ex: place in cool tub of water or shower, spray with garden hose, mist under a fan or cover with cold wet towels and apply ice packs to his arm pits, neck and groin areas.) PREVENTION: Combat heat stroke by recognizing warning signs. 1. Stay indoors when temperatures are high. Avoid strenuous activity during the warmest part of the day. 2. If you have to go out, wear sunscreen with SPF of 15 or more on exposed body parts, wear light colored, loose fitting clothing and cover your head with a hat or umbrella. 3. Drink ample water: Hydrate before you go out and carry a bottle of water with you. Drink 8 oz of water or healthy fluids every 15-20 minutes while out, even if you are not thirsty. Replenish fluid and electrolyte loss from heavy sweating with Pedialyte or Gatorade. 4. Avoid hot, sunlit areas and do not sit in a parked car (a common cause of heat stroke in children). 5. Some medications (ex: diuretics, stimulants, sedatives) can increase the risk of heat stroke; check with your pharmacist or doctor to see if you have increased risk due to your particular medications. 6. If you have muscle cramps or feel weak, stop the activity immediately and cool down. PROGNOSIS: With prompt and effective treatment, many people will recover with little or no problem, however some individuals become more sensitive to hot weather. Initial recovery usually takes 1-2 days in the hospital, longer if organ damage is detected. In those cases, experts suggest complete recovery may take 2 months to one year if permanent organ damage has not occurred.
Remember that heat stroke has been called the number one killer of pets during summertime,
so be sure to take precautions to keep your furry friends cool and safe as well.

GRIEFSHARE GriefShare resumes August 22, 2017. I would like to personally invite anyone in our congregation or those whom you personally know that are hurting and in need of support due to the loss of a loved one. Both men and women need special care during such a difficult time.
At GriefShare, we welcome anyone at any session. There are 13 sessions. We do not close the group after the first few weeks. It is hard to come alone, hurting and not knowing what to expect. Our time together is a time of prayer, video, group discussion, sharing of stories, laughter and tears.
This group is a confidential group. No outside talk or revealing personal information.
We will begin our third semester August 22, 2017 at 6:30—8:00 pm here at Goddard. Snacks and drinks are provided. No child care available. For those who have questions, you may contact Debbie at the church office or me at 479.461.6484. GriefShare works!
