2 Aug. 2, 2020 St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church

This Sunday we hear the familiar story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 with five loaves and two fish. With the exception of the

Resurrection, the feeding of the 5,000 is the only miracle mentioned in all four Gospels. In Matthew’s Gospel, which we hear at Mass today, he simply states that there were five loaves and two fish. In other Gospels, it is specified that the bread are barley loaves and the fish are small fish.

When we hear loaves of bread, we might think of big, homemade loaves of bread. That is not what barley loaves were. They were small, flat loaves, like pita bread. Barley bread was coarser than wheat bread, and was seen as the food of the poor, as opposed to wheat bread which was eaten by those who could afford it.

The small fish were probably Kinneret sardines, small fish caught in the Sea of Galilee and preserved by pickling. The ancient city of Magdala, where Mary Magdalene was from and which was near where the feeding of the 5,000 happened, was an ancient center of sardine fishing.

Why does this matter? Jesus was not offering the people fine dining. This is not something you would order at a restaurant or look forward to eating. Surely many of these people had better food to eat back at their homes. But Scripture says the people ate “and were satisfied.”

When we read this, the first thing we think of is the quantity of food. Five small loaves and two small fish fed thousands of people until they all had more than they could eat. But I think it says something about the quality as well. Even if you were offered all the barley loaves and pickled sardines that you wanted, at the end of the meal, would you say that you were “satisfied?”

We often expect God to provide us with the best of the best, with the “fine dining” option. But often, God’s grace comes to us as barley loaves and pickled sardines, as something that may seem unappealing, but, by His grace, is more than enough to satisfy us.

But we have to accept what God gives us, rather than searching for something that appears more satisfying. Every time we sin, we are turning away from what God offers us because something else seems more satisfying.

Let us ask the Lord to help us see past the external appearances, to see past the barley loaves and small fish which He offers, to see that His grace alone truly satisfies.

From the Pastor / Noticias del PárrocoMO Catholic Bishops Support Medicaid Expansion on Aug. 4

Amendment 2 is on the ballot this Tuesday, Aug. 4, asking Missourians to expand the eligibility requirements for Medicaid in Missouri.

Expanding access to Medicaid will help many low-income, working Missourians get access to healthcare coverage through the Medicaid program. It will also help Catholic hospitals improve their operating margins by reducing uncompensated care. The Missouri bishops are supporting this effort.

Medicaid is a federal program administered by the states. It was passed in the mid-1960’s to provide health insurance coverage for the poor and currently provides health insurance coverage to the disabled, the elderly, custodial parents, pregnant women and children.

In Missouri, many working poor continue to pay the price of going without healthcare coverage, delaying seeking treatment for their chronic conditions, some even dying prematurely because they can’t afford and don’t have access tohealthcare coverage.

Being denied health coverage at the expense of your health, your ability to continue to work and support your family, and even at the expense of your life, is a life issue.

It is estimated that 200,000-250,000 people will enroll in Medicaid if it is expanded. Medicaid is a joint federal and state program with each contributing funds to pay for it through state and federal general revenue funds. Missouri currently pays 35 percent towards Medicaid with the federal government paying the remaining 65 percent.

With the expanded population, Missouri would pay 10 percent, the federal government 90. The Missouri Catholic Conference agrees there is no “free money,” but there would be economic benefits to Missouri in drawing down additional federal revenue.

For more information on Medicaid, and to listen to a podcast about the Medicaid expansion ballot proposal (Amendment 2), please visit the Missouri Catholic Conference website at www.mocatholic.org.

Support the Latin America ApostolateDear Friends in Christ,

Since 1956, the Archdiocese of St. Louis has sent over 45 archdiocesan priests to serve the people of Bolivia, one of the poorest countries in South America. This year, we offer praise and thanks to our Lord, as Fr. Patrick Hayden and Fr. James Michler continue to serve in the Latin America Apostolate.

Without the prayers and sacrifices of the people of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, our Latin America Apostolate could not offer pastoral care, formation, catechesis, and social services to the community there, especially during this pandemic.

Ask God how He is calling you to participate in this mission financially. The annual collection will take place THIS SUNDAY, Aug. 2. I am asking God’s blessings on you and your families, and am grateful for your support of our Latin America Apostolate.

Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Apostolic Administrator

Today we jump ahead in our reading of

Matthew's Gospel to Chapter 14. Last week we heard Jesus conclude his discourse with the crowds about the Kingdom of Heaven. Matthew then recounts the story of John the Baptist's arrest and execution at the hands of Herod. Today's Gospel reading begins at this point.

Upon hearing the news of the death of John the Baptist, Jesus seeks to withdraw, but the crowds follow him. Jesus reaches out to them in compassion and heals the sick. At the end of a long day, the disciples encourage Jesus to send the crowds away so that they might find provisions for themselves. Jesus again responds with compassion for the crowd. Jesus tells his disciples to provide food for the crowd. The disciples reply with a report of the meagerness of their own provisions—five loaves and two fish. The result is the

very familiar miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish.

Jesus's blessing brought abundance from the meager provisions of the disciples. In this action, Jesus offers us a sign of the Kingdom of Heaven that he has been teaching about in the parables. A feast results from the smallest

of portions—remember the mustard seed and the yeast. In this miracle we witness an example for Christian life and ministry. Even the smallest of offerings can produce abundant results when placed in the service of the Kingdom of Heaven.

We find the story of Jesus's multiplication of the loaves and the fish in each of the four Gospels. In the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, Jesus performs this same miracle on two separate occasions. The story of this miracle is an anticipation of the Eucharist in which we are fed by the abundant grace of God.
