The 6th Annual Jeff’s Fun Run is in the books and what a blast it was! Well over 150 registered vehicles and another 30 or so that just tagged along were treated to the type of day that makes people move to Southern California. Warm sunshine in mid January. Add to that a great moving car show and 6 fantastic shops to tour and how could we loose?

The day started real early for us at Ken Grody Ford. It may have been early for us but the Grody Gang worked late into the evening clearing their entire sales lot of vehicles to

make room for the Hot Rods and we needed every bit of space we could get. The starting point is kept simple for a reason... we need the space. Just a few tables for registration is all we need. Add to that all of our friends and supporters and we have a winning combination.

Back when we were young, the automotive magazine business was grass roots and the men’s names who were willing to work 24-7’s to produce and distribute them were easily found listed on the editorial page. First, they had passion for their specialized industry then secondly a determination to search out interesting content, produce printed pages, sell some advertising space and hopefully make enough profit to print the next few issues. To have your readers pay homage to your work was much more valuable to them than the almighty dollar. Unfortunately, the world is changing especially the way we communicate when it comes to specialty automotive magazine titles.Tom McMullen, Robert Petersen, Argus publishing and the list goes on, didn’t last as long as the magazine titles they created, and neither have their blueprint for success. Their business model is no more – driven by the fact that investors now own these titles and magazine futures are simple. Keep it if it contributes to the bottom line and adios if it doesn’t. As evidence, several prominent automotive titles and over 100 publishing positions (mostly editorial) have been eliminated by one big publishing company in just the past few weeks! That’s too close to home for me, especially the timing.Recently I attended a class reunion of former McMullen Publishing staff members where we talked, laughed and got somber a few times over events that took place during our tenures at McMullen Publishing. We all started working there in the early seventies using twin-lens cameras with manual focus and manual aperture setting and produced our work on Underwood typewriters. No digital cameras, no computers and no cell phones. All editors knew how to cultivate cutting-edge articles, knew how to create informative and/or entertaining articles and how to take photos long before automation. Some were best at writing or photography, but everyone could do each job proficiently. Jim Clark (not present in the photo) was our best friend and fearless leader. He dictated our time to ensure we met deadlines and even personally loaned each of us camera gear to get us going until we could afford to purchase our own. We didn’t work five days a week, eight hours a day, we worked until the job was finished and the ones that made it to the editor position were the men who generally devoted their lives to the quality of his magazine.So, I am sad to say that part of the discussion concerns the future of automotive magazine titles. The consensus is that print media has about a five year life-span left. The future of the successful tiles will be with on-line subscriptions, not printed magazines on the newsstands. For better or worse, the on-line books will primarily be filled with material from contributors – not staff members. Investors simply will not continue to shell out the costs of salaries, retirement benefits, medical insurance and all the other state and federal charges associated with brick and mortar companies. Better get a good printer if you wish to continue to save truck features as print magazines will all too soon be the way of the dinosaur!

Motivation... by Dale BeverleyWhat keeps me motivated after being a part of Pickups Limited for nearly 40 years? It is a lot of things but so far this year has been off to a good start with the New Year’s Day cruise and Jeff’s Fun Run VI. We are also fortunate to have incredible nice weather to drive our trucks while the Mid-West and East Coast dig themselves out of snow. They can only wait for their weather to warm up, read Truckin’ magazines or look at YouTube on the internet. Yet we on the other hand can go out today or tomorrow, and weather will probably not be an issue. (Although while I am writing this the largest and only winter storm so far this season is making its way to our West Coast.)

I can also go out in my garage and I walk by a recently completed frame just waiting for me to assemble with parts already purchased, imagining the completed project, but already thinking about the next one after. Also thinking about cross country trips to the Super-Nats in Tennessee as well as some of the Super Tours, 30 plus years of Western Nationals and North South Runs, and planning for the next events this year. But all of these would mean nothing if we did not have other people who can also share similar interest. It is great to have Pickups Limited to do just that.

Last issue I mentioned that the Engineering class I teach at Foothill High School is working on building a 1929 roadster. We just finished installing the TCI front suspension and are presently installing the new Currie rear 9 inch Ford rear using triangulated four bar linkage. For continued updates on this project we the students have constructed a web

site on their progress. Now if I can only convince this younger group to appreciate the trucks as much as the rest of us. Who knows maybe I can convince them to get a Ford truck and join our club.

The 3rd annual Whittier Classic Car Show and was hosted by and held at the Whittier Community Church. The event was open to all foreign, classic and collector cars - 1976 and older.http://whittierareaclassiccarshow.com/Aproximentally 400 vehicles attended including a large group of vintage dragsters and funny cars that heald a caklefest. Besides the classic collector cars and trucks there were some unusual vehicles like a Bat mobile replica, milk delivery truck and a well detailed tractor.

Admission was free to the public with live music throughout out the day, vendor booths, food trucks, raffle prizes, event t shirts, games and kid activities.

Trophies were awarded in over 20 categories and the raffle grand prize was $500.00 cash. Other prizes included a 40” flat screen TV and 2 complete sets of brand new car rims. Food wise there were 6 catering trucks plus various other goodies to find.

Pickups Limited was well represented with entries from Glenn Kerr, Chris Travers, Rich Miller, Rucy Weber, Bill Crisel, Bobby Flores, and Lenny Manestar along with a visit from Steve & Sally Nagamatsu... someday we will get Steve’s truck on the road.

We were joined by chapter members from Ventura, Inland Empire, and San Diego as well as a group from Ohio and a couple all the way (by car) from Argentina! WOW is all I can say about that.

You will find very few Southern California events that draw such a cross section of vehicles. You will find everything from VW’s to high end customs, to total beaters, to “work in progress” specials all in the name of fun.

I sure hope that Jeff Hornsby was looking down with that big smile on his face and the hat on his head, nodding with approval.

heard about the event from friends and thought it would a

cool thing to do!

All the way from Ohio were these 5 hot rodders. They came to Southern California to see the Grand National Roadster Show. When they found out about the Fun Run, they added a few days to their trip and decided to take some shop tours. The graphics on the rental van came by the way of detailing tape from inside the Ken Grody service area.

EDITORIAL... Bits and Peicesby Chris TraversThe production almost every issue of Haulin’ Freight ends with this article being written.... LAST! It is kind of my style to see what everybody else is going to write about as well as to see what develops throughout the two months between each issue. This issue was no different but this issue contains a very inspirational article from our V.P. Dale about motivation.

Just remember that it is OK to not make much progress on your truck as long as you take note as to what is going on around you. Take me for instance. Sure I am frustrated because I am entering the second year with what once was a great looking ride still waiting for a paint job but what else has happened? New job, inside house remodel, work on “the Other Car”, my ‘64 Austin Mini, plus all of the standard family and club activities including the recent Jeff’s Fun Run #6... Yeah, I guess I have remained motivated to a really high degree.

The point is, don’t get discouraged. Keep moving forwards towards your goals. If your truck is already on the road, make sure it is tip top shape by attending the safety check this month. Heck, if it is really road worthy, why not take one of those “bucket list” trips like I want to do. How about a trip to one of the premiere hot rod events across the country like the Woodward Dream Cruise in Michigan, Cruisin’ the Coast in Mississippi, Back to the 50’s in Minnesota, The F-100 Super Nationals in Tennessee, just to name a few. Someday I will do these... what about you?

What’s The Latest?... by Chris TraversFontana to Fresno is not what most of us would call an acceptable commute to work but “comeback member” Frank Reyes does just that. When the glass company moved to Fresno, they made Frank an offer he couldn’t refuse so Frank figured out a way to make it work.

Here is a photo he sent to me recently to spell any rumors that he actually does have a truck and IS working on it.

Hopefully there will be more to come along with a story on the build.

Marketing Director Chip Dorman was with us at our December meeting. Chip accepted a small token of Pickups Limited’s appreciation on behalf of Ken Grody Ford for everything they provide for us throughout each year. Just remember guys, without Ken Grody Ford, we would be out on the streets again looking for a place to meet. This truly has become our home.

Rumor has it that Chip actually did pass the goodies along to the sales team rather than keep them to himself.

Every time you start your car they glow to greet you, but after a few seconds of engine operation they fade away - hopefully not to be seen again until the next engine start. Car care experts are urging motorists to heed their car’s cry for attention and be aware of the red and yellow indicators on the instrument panel that illuminate to let you know when a problem occurs.

“Motorists need to be aware of the critical warning lights. They include those that monitor engine oil pressure, engine coolant temperature, tire pressure warning system and the vehicle charging system,” says John Nielsen, Director of AAA Automotive. “To reduce the chances of vehicle damage and/or a roadside breakdown, these warning lights require prompt and proper action when they illuminate.”

Warning Light TestWhen the ignition key is first turned to the ON position, all of the vehicle’s warning lights should illuminate. The lights

typically remain on until the engine is started and running. If a warning light fails to illuminate at this time, have the related system checked out by your auto technician.

Once the engine is running, all the warning lights should go out within a few seconds. If any light remains illuminated, consult your owner’s manual or the sections below for further information.

Have You Seen The Light?


Engine Oil PressureThe engine oil pressure warning light commonly displays an oil can symbol or the word “OIL.” When the oil pressure warning light illuminates, the engine has lost its supply of pressurized lubricating oil and severe engine damage or catastrophic failure can occur within seconds.

Of all the warning lights, the oil pressure light indicates the greatest potential for serious mechanical damage, and also allows you the shortest

time in which to take appropriate action. If the oil pressure warning light comes on and stays on: pull off the road immediately, shut off the engine, and seek help immediately. Unless you are in an extremely dangerous situation, do not attempt to drive the vehicle any farther. This can significantly increase the extent of any engine damage - turning a possibly minor repair into a complete engine replacement.

Engine Coolant TemperatureThe engine coolant temperature warning light commonly displays a thermometer symbol or the logo “TEMP.” When the coolant temperature light illuminates, the engine temperature has exceeded the safe maximum.

Until the rise in coolant temperature is reversed, the engine will suffer accelerated wear. If the increase in temperature continues, major engine damage or catastrophic failure will result.

The coolant temperature light does give you a little more time in which to take appropriate action. If the coolant temperature warning light comes on, quickly assess the situation. Steam or liquid coolant coming from under the hood are clear indications of overheating and/or a leak. Pull off the road at the first safe opportunity and seek assistance.

Continuing to operate an engine with an illuminated temperature warning light will result in a major damage and a significant repair bill.

Caution! Boiling coolant can cause severe burns! Do not attempt to open the hood in the presence of excessive steam, and never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. The cooling system is under pressure and scalding coolant will be expelled with great force.

TPMS - Tire Pressure Monitoring SystemThis light is usually a tire symbol with some type of warning indication. It means the tire pressure is not in accordance with manufactures recommendations. When safe, pull over and check pressure. Doing this can save you from damaging a tire that other wise may be repairable.

Charging SystemThe charging system warning light commonly displays a battery symbol or the logo “ALT” or “GEN.” When the charging system warning light illuminates, the vehicle electrical system is no longer being supplied with power by the alternator. A charging system failure rarely results in serious mechanical damage, and of all the warning lights, this one gives you the greatest amount of time to take appropriate action. Depending on the electrical demands of your vehicle, and the reserve capacity of its battery, you will generally have at least 20 minutes of daylight driving time before voltage drops to the point where the ignition system will no longer function and the engine will quit. If the charging system warning light comes on, turn off all unnecessary electrical accessories and drive to the nearest repair facility to have the vehicle checked.

But if you don’t have the oil, temuaurture or charging lights and have traditional guages instead, the TPMS and Check Engine lights will still be used on newer cars.

Bad Things Happen to Good Cars...


Original article by William Schertz - Tire Business.comCITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif.—Coker Group, parent company of Coker Tire Co., has moved its West Coast distribution and wheel manufacturing capabilities to a 100,000-sq.-ft. facility in City of Industry. This location began operations just after January 1st of this year. The new distribution center, replaces the tire and wheel distributor’s 15,000-sq.-ft. Fresno, Calif., facility, providing substantially more storage space and the logistical advantages that come with being located in Los Angeles County, company President Corky Coker told Tire Business.com. “Fresno is a great place,” he said. “I went there because property was more reasonable, but I’m halfway between the (San Francisco) Bay and LA. It’s not ideal.” Coker Tire sold the Fresno building a year ago to Mike and Sherrie Stallings, from whom Coker purchased the assets of custom wheel manufacturer Wheel Vintiques Inc. in late 2011. Mr. Coker didn’t specify how the Stallings plan to use the facility.

Coker Tire’s new facility will house a complete steel and wire wheel manufacturing plant, allowing the company to easily assemble tire and wheel packages for customers in the area.

“Essentially in California, we’ll...make the wheels, finish them, put tires on them, put nitrogen in them, balance them (and) a tire and wheel as-sembly is out the other end,” he said. Mr. Coker said drag racers on the West Coast will benefit from the move “because all our Phoenix drag line and M&H drag line tires will be there in large quantity, whereas we’ve not had space in our other distribution facility before.”

In addition, Mr. Coker said the new facility will include a showroom featuring collectible cars and motorcycles, and the company will hold visitor tours of the showroom and wheel production facility. We’ve had a presence on the West Coast for many years, as California has a huge classic car and hot rod following. Our original West Coast Distribution Center was located in Fresno, California, but it made perfect sense for us to move to So-Cal (City of Industry, more specifically), so we could be closer to our steel suppliers, as well as a huge customer base. The new Distribution Center is now fully functional, and the new facility also houses our wheel manufacturing. “It’s a big move for us, so we threw a Grand Opening party to celebrate!”

Our event consisted of tours of the facility, free food and drinks, as well as live entertainment by “Led Foot”, a band made up of SEMA members. It was a big treat for all of us to hang out with friends, and welcome everyone to our new facility. In addition to all of the industry folks, Corky invited the cast of his new TV show, Backroad Gold to the event. The ribbon cutting ceremony was great, and a huge crowd watched as Corky thanked his fam-ily and staff for helping get Coker Tire Company to this milestone.

Biker Billy Standley Spent 18 Years Arranging His Funeral and was Buried Astride His Beloved Harley in Plexiglas CasketBy LIZ FIELDS - ABC News - Feb. 1, 2014

An Ohio motorcycle enthusiast’s family has carried out their father’s long-laid and elaborate funeral plans, that were 18 years in the making.

Billy Standley, 82, of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, was buried Friday, embalmed atop his 1967 Harley Davidson and encased in a giant plexiglass casket.

A couple of hundred people turned up at the funeral which was held outside so all of Standley’s biker friends could attend, two even arriving riding their own motorcyles.

Standley, who died of lung cancer on Sunday, began his own funeral arrangements 18 years ago when he approached David Vernon of Vernon Funeral Homes with his quirky idea.

“At that time I didn’t know to take him seriously or not,” said Vernon, who realized as conversations progressed over several years that this was something “very important” to Standley.

“He gave it a lot of thought,” Vernon said. “He was a unique man -- a man who spoke his mind and did things whether people liked it or not.”

The lengths Standley took to arrange his own funeral involved buying three burial plots next to his wife Lorna’s grave, which provided a space large enough to accommodate the large custom made concrete vault that would eventually hold the casket.

As for the casket itself, Standley built the see-though box with his two sons out of plexiglass, reinforced with steel and wood rods.

“Me and my brother built the casket five years ago and it’s been sitting in his garage waiting for him to die,” Pete Standley told ABC News.

After Billy Standley’s death on Sunday, five embalmers helped prepare and secure Standley atop his bike, dressing him in his well-worn leathers, white helmet and glasses.

He was secured to the $30,000 bike with the metal armour he had fabricated to wrap around his waist, which was mounted to a bracket that went down between the seats.

Before his final ride, Standley’s beloved custom-painted 1967 Electra Glide cruiser had taken him all around the country. The retired truck driver and former rodeo rider had travelled every state except Hawaii in his younger years, with many of those trips made on his motorcycle.

While Standley’s family said the burial might be unusual and even shocking to those witnessing it, they wanted to grant the last wish of the man who had told them he didn’t just want to ride to heaven, but wanted the world to witness him do it in a see-through casket.

“This was his wish and we granted him his final wish,” said Pete Standley. “He rode his motorcycle to the grave and he’s still riding it today.”

John Gilbert Joins Classic Trucks Magazineby Chris Travers

“I can just imagine what the headlines were to read if the AARP newsletter were to post, or print the news that I was just hired as Classic Trucks tech editor” was the comment by John Gilbert on the Classic Trucks web site. Shortly after Source Interlink Media announced the hiring of the former Tailgate, Custom Classic Trucks, and American Truck editor. At 61 years young, John has been around the block more than a few times.

I first met John long before my F-100 days. It was almost 20 years ago when a friend of mine Larry Cox said to me “let’s go look at some old cars and parts this guys has in his garage. He

says he needs to get rid of some of them right away”. Off we went into the O.C. looking for, not truck parts, but vintage Mini Cooper “bits”. That’s correct... those itty-bitty things that will run circles around most anything else on the road and are capable of turning anybodies skin pale on the corners. Just ask Gloria, Rudy, and Stillwell about their rides in Phreadd, the name of my ‘64 Austin Mini Cooper “S”! I think John must have been in a transitional period because he had a lot of everything besides the Mini parts. Well we walked away with quite a bit of stuff in boxes, bags, and whatever was around AND Larry scored a rather rare Mini based 60’s

variant called an Ogle. Believe me when I say that anybody that is or even was into these little creatures he truly a car nut... and John is that for sure.

John says that we can look forward to future tech articles on '53-56 Ford F-100’s, not to mention some stuff coming down the pike on F-1’s, Slicks, Bumpsides, and Dentsides. He is currently finishing two different articles on a certain “mostly orange” ‘56 F-100 that we should see in the near future. Knowing Mr. Gilbert over the past few years has taught me to never expect the ordinary. He’s one of us who likes to make things happen and will always look outside of the box for something different.

Sinkhole Collapses Part of Corvette Museum BOWLING GREEN, Ky. February 12, 2014 (AP) - By BRUCE SCHREINER Associated Press

It was a sight to make a classic car lover weep: A gaping sinkhole opened beneath the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky and swallowed eight prized cars like they were toys, piling them in a heap amid loose dirt and concrete fragments.

It happened early Wednesday morning while the attraction dedicated to the classic American sports car was closed to visitors. Surveillance Camera Showed the Moment a Sinkhole Damaged the Eight Corvettes

“They’re all just kind of nose down in the bottom of the hole,” said Western Kentucky University engineering professor Matt Dettman, part of a team brought in to assess the damage and stability of the surrounding area.

Six of the cars were owned by the museum and two — a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder and a 2009 ZR1 Blue Devil — were on loan from General Motors, said museum spokeswoman Katie Frassinelli.

The other cars damaged were a 1962 black Corvette, a 1984 PPG Pace Car, a 1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette, a 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette, a 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette and a 2009 white 1.5 Millionth Corvette.

“All of these have a unique story behind them,” said museum executive director Wendell Strode. “They’re special.” An Indiana man donated the 1962 Corvette before his death. He babied it so much he wouldn’t drive it in the rain. “It was just a very immaculate car,” Strode said. The museum has insurance coverage for the damage to the cars and the structure, he said.

The hole opened up at about 5:40 a.m. CST Wednesday, setting off an alarm and a call to the fire department, said Bowling Green city spokeswoman Kim Lancaster. No injuries were reported. Frassinelli said no one was in the museum at the time. The museum attracts about 150,000 visitors each year. It’s located near the factory where the iconic Corvettes are made.

The hole opened beneath part of the museum’s domed section, an original part of the facility that was completed in 1994. The area will remain closed. The fire department estimated the hole is about 40 feet across and 25 to 30 feet deep. The rest of the museum will operate normal hours Thursday, officials said. The museum said a structural engineering firm determined the perimeter of the domed area is stable.

Pictures of the sinkhole showed a collapsed section of floor with multiple cars visible inside the hole. A few feet away, other Corvettes sat undamaged. Most of the vehicles were later removed from the damaged area, and the museum was contacting their owners. “It’s certainly a sad day here,” Strode said.


Visitors trickled into the museum Wednesday, some unaware the main exhibit area was closed. They gazed at the Corvettes on display in the main lobby and shook their heads in amazement that prized Corvettes had been swallowed by the earth. “That’s a whole lot of money just to throw down a hole,” said Alida Kriete, who stopped with her family on their way back home in Indiana after a vacation to the Gulf Coast.

Dettman estimated it could take weeks to months to repair the damage. The expense could run into hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on the extent of any structural damage, he said. Lancaster said information was still being gathered about what exactly happened, but it appeared to be the first problem of its kind at the property.

Bowling Green sits in the midst of the state's largest karst region — the Western Pennyroyal area, where many of Kentucky's longest and deepest caves run underground. A karst region displays distinctive surface features, including sinkholes. Sinkholes are common in the area, but this one was unique, Dettman said. "One, it's full of Corvettes, and two that it was inside a structure," he said. Geologists were still trying to determine what caused the sinkhole to open up.

Some of the foundation beneath the dome's main tower appeared to have been undermined, Dettman said, but "the primary foundation system around the perimeter of the structure hasn't been undermined." Jason Polk, a geography and geology professor at Western Kentucky University, called it an isolated event, and said there was no indication that the sinkhole could spread. "It's been stable," he said. "We haven't seen any other activity or movement since this morning."

Strode said it appeared at least two of the Corvettes could be saved, but museum officials were still trying to determine the extent of the damage and the value of the eight cars. He didn't know how soon the cars could be recovered. "Safety will be paramount, but we'll also want to move as fast and as appropriate as we can," he said.

The museum is set to host the 2014 Corvette Caravan in late August, a celebration marking the museum's 20th anniversary. Museum officials expect car clubs from all 50 states and beyond to converge on Bowling Green for the celebration.

The museum had already hired an engineering firm to oversee the repairs, Strode said.

"The Corvette Museum has overcome adversity before and we'll overcome it again," he said. "And we'll have something spectacu-lar to show you back there in short order."

Bowling Green, Ky., is also the lone place where General Motors builds the iconic Corvette.

Pickups Limited - Orange County Chapter Membership Dues: Dues are $5 per month or $55 per year if paid annually by February 1. New members joining after January may prorate membership fees at a rate of $5 per month. There is a one-time initiation fee of $40 for all new

ABOUT USPickups Limited began in April, 1968 as the result of an ad placed in the Penny Saver. Our Orange County Chapter is the oldest and currently the largest of 7 Chapters found throughout Southern California, with membership limited to 1948-56 F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels. We are an active non-profit organization. Each June we host the largest all Ford truck show in the Western United States, the F-100 Western Nationals while every January we produce Jeff’s Fun Run, a poker run throughout the car culture of LA and Orange Counties. Our business meetings are on the second Thursday of each month at Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park (info below) and we usually plan one group outing each month. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS• Where can I buy an F-100? You would be surprised where they show up. Trucks can be found on E-bay, Auto and Truck Trader and in Drive magazine as well as various F-1 & F-100 on-line sites including pickupslimited.com and at many of the local cruise events. You might even find one in your own neighborhood! If you feel adventurous, you can even build a brand new 1956 F-100 from parts that many vendors provide!• Where can I get parts and repairs? Check the flip side for a listing of great vendors that support Pickups Limited.• Can I do repairs myself? Many of us do most of the mechanical tasks ourselves. That’s half the fun. There also are many books available from mechanical to paint and body to interior total restoration.• Do I have to own a truck to join? Yes but it can be a work in progress. The love for the truck is what comes first. If you are looking for a truck, maybe we can help. • Do I have to be a member to participate in Club events? Not at all! Non members are always welcome. But if you do a "Run" in something other than a F-1 or F-100, we might ask you to follow the pack.• How can I get a ride in a F-100? Show up at a meeting or event and ask!• How can I join Pickups Limited? Come to a meeting or one of our events for the first step. There is a basic probationary period required.• Do I need special insurance for such an old vehicle? Not really, it depends on the value of the truck. Many companies will offer premium coverage although there are speciality insurance carriers that can insure your baby for the full stated value.
