ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS (MA & WA) SUPPLEMENTARY CODE OF POINTS

FOR GMPD FOREWARD

The GMPD (Gymnastics and Movement for People with Disabilities) Code of Points for Men’s and Women’s artistic gymnastics is now in its 3rd cycle.

In this Olympic cycle the authors of this supplement feel that the mainstream artistic codes are such that they are a very good basis on which to form the rules and regulations for people with disabilities. For this reason, rather than publish a full code of points, they have decided to offer a much shorter supplement to the mainstream codes. It is therefore essential that coaches and judges should be familiar with their respective mainstream Men’s or Women’s artistic rules.

The mainstream and GMPD codes of points allow a coach to formulate a routine using the strengths and weaknesses of the individual gymnasts to their best advantage.

Since the formation of the GMPD Judging Panel in 1999, many hours have been spent writing the original code of points and continually refining it in subsequent years.

The present members of the Judging panel are:

Men’s Artistic: Anne Pearcey

Ben Murphy

Dave Balmer

Women’s Artistic: Chris O’Hagan

Jeremy Eddon

Nikki Haynes

Mal Rozzell

I would like to thank them and the members of the British Gymnastics GMPD Technical Committee for all their efforts in producing this supplementary code of points.

Dave Balmer

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this booklet is to set the criteria to be used in the judging of GMPD voluntary routines and to act as a guideline for th e construction of voluntary routines. All Coaches and Judges MUST follow this code in conjunction with their relative mainstream code when judging GMPD competitions. These rules cover all amendments concerning artistic gymnastics for people with disability. Anything not included in this supplement will be as per FIG.

The under-noted requirements are based on: the FIG code, the Special Olympics rules, the decisions of the GMPD national Technical Committee (TC) as well as practical experience and several years of British and International GMPD competition in conjunction with the modern development of the sport of gymnastics.

1. General No account should be taken for a gymnasts disability except where that disability means that the gymnast is physically unable to conform to the code i.e. two feet landing for a lower leg amputee. In such cases the chair of the judging panel must be informed prior to the competition 2. Equipment The coach may petition in writing, prior to the competition, for use of additional equipment in the case of special need provided it does not give an unfair advantage. Unauthorised use of equipment may result in a zero score.

The gymnast will be entitled to a warm up as per FI G. The Head Judge, apparatus is empowered to modify the warm up period to ensure each gymnast has the correct time allowed. 3. Rights and Duties of Coaches Whilst coaches are not normally permitted to speak to Judges, they may approach the head judge in order to make the judges aware of a specific disability i.e. deafness that may require the coach to signal to the gymnast. In the case of Women’s gymnastics, it is the responsibility of the coach to supply a recording of the gymnast’s floor music in the form of both tape and CD together with a back up. Dress code is as FIG and will be strictly enforced. 4. Rights and Duties of the Gymnast

Female gymnasts attire – Close fitting shorts are permitted provided they are of a similar colour and material to the leotard. All else as per FIG.

Page 4: GMPD Code of Points 2008

3

5. Rights and Duties of the Judge

See paragraph 1 of Rights and Duties of Coaches. All else as per FIG.

6. Competition Format – National Voluntaries - requ irements

Open competition – as per modified code. EGR’s to be minimum value ‘J’ Competition ‘A’ – Highest 8 elements and 3 EGR’s + dismount. All EGR’s minimum value ‘J’ Competition ‘B’ – Highest 6 elements and 2 EGR’s + dismount. Any element to count toward EGR Note: additional EGR’s in competition ‘A’ & ‘B’ will not count towards the start value e.g. A gymnast can only score 1.5 for EGR’s in competition ‘B’ 7. Elements Additional to the FIG code of points

This is one of the most important parts of this code of points. In order to simplify the code as much as possible, it was agreed that there should be just two levels below the Mainstream code. These are listed as P (Progressive) and J (Junior) moves. You will see that the elements for each apparatus are shown in a table of 3 columns showing from left to right the progression to FIG codes. The right hand column (A’s) is as per FIG except on the rare occasion where the move is shown in bold italics. These are moves, which were A moves in the previous cycle and where it is felt there are not sufficient moves for people with disabilities to form a routine. 8. Value of Moves The value of any move will be as per FIG except that ‘J’ moves will have a value of 0.05. ‘P’ moves will not have a value but will count toward the total number of required elements 9. Special Requirements/Element Group Requirements Any ‘J’ element or above shown in this code may count as a dismount. Any element from the FIG codes may count as any other element group requirement (EGR) 10. Routine Construction A routine should be made up of 10 elements. There will be no deduction for more than 10 moves but the B jury will deduct for any loss of form. A move may be repeated once and still count toward the 10 required elements with the full value as shown in the codes. When constructing a routine the coach is strongly a dvised not to look for a high start value at the expense of B jury deductions. A clean but simple routine with a low start value will often score higher than a routine with a high start value but with many errors.

Page 5: GMPD Code of Points 2008

4

11. Short Routines FIG rules will apply with regard to short routines except for the following: - Competition ‘A’ where there will be a 1.00 mark deduction for each missing element less than 7 Competition ‘B’ where there will be a 1.00 mark deduction for each missing element less than 5 12. Extra Matting Extra matting will be permitted for safety reasons but the following will apply: - Beam and vault – Only one extra mat to a maximum thickness of 20cm. Rings and High Bar – the gymnast must be clear of the mats at full extension Parallel and asymmetric bars – where any extra mats are used, the bar(s) should still be at least at the gymnasts shoulder height when standing on any mats. 13. Spotting The coach must always be in a position to support the gymnast on Vault, Rings, High Bar and Asymmetric Bars. Failure to do so may result in a zero score. 14. Aids to mounting An aid to mounting such as a springboard or block will be permitted but must be removed immediately the gymnast has mounted. Failure to remove the aid may result in a zero score

15. Vault A gymnast may have 2 vaults. They can be the same or different and best vault will count. A gymnast will be deemed to have vaulted if their feet have touched the springboard.

MEN’s ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS Pommel 2 pauses of less than 1 second will be permitted in Competition ‘A’ and competition ‘B’ All other apparatus As per FIG.
