NEXT SUNDAY

MATINS & TYPICA WITH HOLY COMMUNION

Next weekend (October 5-7), Fr. Joseph and a few faithful from our parish and its missions will be participating in the First Annual Liturgical Singing Conference in Parma, Ohio. Fr. Deacon Matthew will serve Vespers on Saturday at 5:00 pm, and Matins & Typica with Holy Communion on Sunday at 11:00 am. Please note that there is a very serious moral obligation to attend the liturgical services, as long as you are physically able. In order to be dispensed, you must speak with the administrator beforehand.

YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

“CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN” PILGRIMAGE & RETREAT

Please contact Fr. Joseph if you are still interested in attending the Eastern Catholic Young Adult Pilgrimage & Retreat to Holy Transfiguration Monastery, Redwood Valley, California (December 27, 2018 until January 3, 2019). Fr. Abbot Damien Higgins will lead the young adult pilgrims in prayer and spiritual talks in the context of fellowship. The pilgrimage will also feature daily excursions, including to the wine country of Napa Valley and San Francisco.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

INITIATION OF ADULTS

Our parish and missions now have a program in place for Eastern Christian Initiation of Adults. We will baptize our first adult on the Feast of the Theophany (January 6, 2019). From St. Philip’s Fast (November 14) until the Feast Day, the traditional Byzantine Litany of the Catechumens will be re-introduced into the Divine Liturgy, in order that we might pray together as the Body of Christ for the catechumens.

THIS SUNDAY

TOWN HALL MEETING

St. Basil the Great, Charlotte will host a town hall meeting after Divine Liturgy on Sunday. At the meeting, among other pastoral and financial matters, we will be considering our recent parish location survey. Please make every effort to attend and participate.

YOUTH MINISTRY

CATECHESIS

It is time for our parish and its missions to begin a program of Eastern Christian Formation (ECF) for its youth. The texts used for catechetical instruction will be the “God With Us” Series, which is the approved text for use within the Eparchy of Saint Josaphat. Some of our families have to drive great distances in order to attend church. Therefore, our catechetical activities will take place mainly on Sundays and Major Feast Days, in conjunction with the liturgical services, in order to facilitate the participation of everyone. We would like to offer parents the opportunity to join in various other activities and groups for adults, which would take place concurrently with youth catechism.

SCRIPTURE STUDY

St. Jerome once said, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Have you been reading, studying, and praying with the Sacred Scriptures? Our eparchy has developed a study group, which meets via conference call. The aim is to provide an opportunity to grow in the knowledge of our faith by studying the revealed Word of God from the comfort of our own homes. Please speak with the clergy to obtain information on how to join. We also hope to start a parish group to read and pray with the Word of God together.

REGISTRATION FORMS

If you have not yet filled out a registration form, doing so would help us keep up to date with your contact details and other important information. The form is available on our parish website by clicking on “Mission” then “Registration.” For a paper copy, please speak with the clergy.

RESPECT LIFE MONTH

You are invited to join other faithful nationwide to celebrate Respect Life Month this October with the message “Every Life: Cherished, Chosen, Sent!” Learn more at www.usccb.org/respectlife. Please note that Respect Life Sunday will be observed next week (October 7).

AKATHIST PRAYER GROUP

You are invited to pray the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos for the needs of our parish and Church. Our goal is to have at least one person or family praying the Akathist every day of the week. If you would like to enroll yourselves or your families, please email the parish at [email protected], indicating which day(s) of the week you would like to take.

PARISH HOSPITALITY

Our parish and its missions are in need of a solid group of the faithful who are willing to serve in welcoming visitors, and in preparing and bringing in food for special events. Please be generous with your time and talents.

WISDOM OF THE FATHERS

“I believe in my God, who is merciful and my refuge, and I put my hope in Him. The torture you are meting out against my body troubles me little, because for us men, however much the external body is corrupted, so much more is the inner body revitalized. That is what we have learned, and that is what I believe.”

From the Martyrdom of St. Gregory of Armenia
