May 2017 Global Network on Silvopastoral Systems Why SPS are a sustainable solution to reduce environmental impact of livestock? • Silvopastoral Systems are a good example of sustainable intensification since they increase efficiency and, at the same time, provide environmental and animal welfare benefits. • Sustainable intensification promoted through SPS contributes to improve biodiversity and reduce land degradation. • The presence of shrubs and trees greatly enhances habitat for biodiversity and improve the provision of ecosystem services both for the productive system and for the society. Long term expected outcomes of the GNSPS • Identify the relevant stakeholders and initiatives in SPS globally and the areas where there are demands for knowledge, advice or information. • Serve as a neutral forum to facilitate the exchange between strategic stakeholders in the silvopastoral field including lead producers, private companies, public policy makers, scientists and communicators to stimulate the local practice change in SPS. • Serve as a multi-stakeholder platform to find consensus in the methodologies of evaluation, transfer of information and development of policies to promote the scaling up of silvopastoral systems. Global Network on Silvopastoral Systems (GNSPS): A partnership for SDG The GNSPS is a multi-stakeholder partnership with the common aim of strengthening and scaling up of SPS worldwide, specifically through the generation, exchange and dissemination of knowledge, the documentation of public policies and the facilitation of dialogue to address the challenges associated with sustainable development goals What is a Silvopastoral System? It is an agroforestry arrangement that combines fodder plants, such as grasses and leguminous herbs, with shrubs and trees for animal nutrition and complementary uses.
