Global Modeling at TCEQ
• Global chemical transport models used to establish chemical concentrations at boundaries of photochemical grid model (“boundary conditions”)– Four lateral boundaries– Top of 3-D modeling grid
• TCEQ runs GEOS-Chem, a global 3-D model of atmospheric chemistry driven by meteorological input from the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS)– Extract boundary conditions for Comprehensive Air quality Model
with extensions (CAMx)– Characterize international transport, influence of stratospheric ozone
(10 kilometers and above) on surface concentrations

Evaluating Performance of Global Atmospheric Chemistry Models
• TCEQ is working with Ramboll to establish procedures for comprehensive model performance evaluation of GEOS-Chem model for use in the 2012 and 2016 modeling platforms.
• Limited model performance evaluation for 2012 platform has been performed using available ozone sonde data.

Evaluation of GEOS-Chem
• GEOS-Chem reasonably predicts observed ozone profiles through the troposphere, but over-predicts stratospheric ozone in temperate and tropical latitudes.
• Future work: Employ several additional performance measures to further assure the fidelity of CAMx inputs derived from global models.
