Global Innovation Design (GID) Portfolio Guidelines To apply for the double Masters MA / MSc in Global Innovation Design go to: https://applications.rca.ac.uk/ We strongly advise you to read the information provided on the RCA website before filling in your application form. PLEASE MAKE CAREFUL NOTE OF THE DEADLINES As part of the application process you are expected to provide a portfolio of work. GID applicants can choose to submit their portfolio either physically or using the online system. Please take note of the general and specific guidelines for portfolios below: General Portfolio Requirements: All candidates are required to submit a portfolio of work to be assessed by the programme team. Candidates have the choice of either an online portfolio or physical portfolio. The portfolio should show: ‐ the excellence of your current expertise, study area or professional activity. ‐ evidence of your interest or ability in the fields of innovation, design and engineering. ‐ any work or activity relevant to international understanding or collaboration. ‐ samples of your creative abilities or relevant personal interests. The portfolio could include: projects and exercises from previous degree courses; where relevant, examples of professional work; personal sketchbooks; self‐generated projects; evidence of an ability to make in 3D; as well as examples of creative work in any other areas. NB: If you send digital work in a physical portfolio (e.g. DVD or USB drive) then please also send as a hard‐copy format. If your work is largely digital then you might want to consider the online portfolio submission option. Recommendations: ‐ A portfolio is a visual representations of your skills, experience, interest, and potential. Remember to include: ‐ the great things about what you currently do / recently have done. ‐ the things that prove you have an interest / latent ability in the world of GID. ‐ something special about you.

‐ For group project work you must indicate clearly the exact role that you played in its creation. ‐ Keep to a neat, simple layout – clear communication is key to success. ‐ Put a CV in the portfolio, we have the application form but it’s always useful to see more information. ‐ Even if you have no design experience, show us where you have promise or have made the effort to try. ‐ Remember we are looking for potential. ‐ Make it stand out, we have a lot of portfolio’s to view, make yours special, break the rules.   Physical Portfolio Submission:  ‐ A physical portfolio for GID should be A3 Format. ‐ It’s best to pick portrait or landscape format and stick to it. ‐ Don’t send in delicate or fragile items ‐ they might get broken. ‐ Make it easy for us to browse your work, e.g. ‐ don’t put multiple pages into one clear sleeve. ‐ Concentrate on the content of your portfolio not the packaging / construction of it. ‐ Edit it carefully to get the message you want across (don’t fill it with pages and pages of the same thing) ‐ Aim for probably 5‐10 projects, 20‐30 pages maximum. ‐ Don’t send boxes of stuff, volume does not equal quality. ‐ Follow the instructions on the Application Process page of the RCA website ‐ see point (5) Submit your    portfolio:  http://www.rca.ac.uk/Default.aspx?ContentID=161371   Online Portfolio Submission:  ‐ Using the online application system you may upload up to 20 individual projects to your portfolio, with each project being represented by a maximum of seven examples, which can be in the form of images, videos, weblinks, or slideshows. You should provide a description of a maximum of 100 words for each project and a caption of up to 50 words for each of the examples.  ‐ Moving image or sound work, if uploaded, should be limited to five minutes in length. We recommend instead that you upload the video first to Vimeo or YouTube and provide a link.  ‐ You may include links to websites, such as your personal site, but it must support your main submission. If there are websites you have professionally designed for clients, you must explain your role in the design and implementation processes.   ‐ Images should be in an acceptable format (see formats below) to the following recommended dimensions:     ‐ width: no larger than 36 cm (1024 pixels)     ‐ height: no more than 27cm (768 pixels) minimum height 400 pixels    ‐ resolution must be 72 dpi (dots per inch) re‐size all images appropriately    ‐ maximum file size: 2mb for each image and 80mb for a movie file    ‐ file formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, MP3, MPEG4, FLV, website URL (please note PDF files are not suitable).    For each piece of work please indicate:     ‐ Title    ‐ Medium (where relevant)

  ‐ Date made    ‐ Size / cm length / mins  (where relevant)   IMPORTANT: Please ensure you have reviewed and checked that your submission works in the way you intend it to be seen in a web browser on a different computer (i.e. not the computer you made the submission on, to check that your files have uploaded correctly to our server).    IMPORTANT: If you applied using the online portfolio option then you will need to bring with you a physical portfolio containing the contents of your online submission.  A note about filling in the application form:  ‐ References: Good references are really valuable and powerful.  ‐ Write a good personal statement, don’t give us the usual hyperbole about wanting to study at the intersection of design and engineering. Really, WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE HERE?  ‐ Don’t expect feedback on portfolios, unfortunately we don’t give it there are just too many  applicants.  IMPORTANT:  Please remember the GID programme is subject to a supplementary fee (£2,000 per annum) in addition to the standard RCA postgraduate masters fees because of the higher costs involved in delivering a programme in three countries. This supplementary fee does not include students flights or accommodation.  Also please note that some or all details and data of your application may be shared, where appropriate, for admissions, registration, funding and learning support processes, with the other universities or colleges participating in the Global Innovation Design programme.   And finally:  Have faith in your ability and our ability to see your potential, the biggest mistake you can make is not applying. Good luck we hope to see you in GID one day and thank you for your interest in GID.  Please note these guidelines are subject to change.
