Global FM Broadcast Equipment CompanySignals Acceptance of GE Rectifier Solution

GE’s CP3500 Global Rectifier Platform brings power output flexibility, compact size and power efficiency to international broadcast markets.

Background:

Even with the exponential growth of new cloud and internet-based communications and entertainment channels, the global market for FM broadcasting is still a major channel for news and entertainment. At the same time, this industry is transitioning between traditional analog and digital technologies – with transmission power requirements as varied as the many regional markets that FM radio serves. RFE Broadcast, an international provider of compact FM transmitters, serves the broadcast market around the world with a wide offering of FM transmitter and amplifier solutions. The company is headquartered in Padova in northern Italy, near Venice, with a branch in southern Italy in the city of Calabria.

Problem:

RFE Broadcast was facing the challenge of finding reliable and flexible power conversion solutions that would work across global markets. The company has a range

of FM analog and digital transmitters rated from as low as 300W up to 40kW, each with a unique range of power conversion requirements. “In addition to this product line with its variable power requirements, we were looking for overall quality and power efficiency in a very compact package,” said Caporizzi Martino, head of RFE Broadcast.

Solution and Results:

The solution for meeting the AC-to-DC power conversion requirement for RFE’s line of products was GE’s high efficiency CP3500 rectifier. Part of GE’s global rectifier platform, the specific CP3500 model* selected by RFE features variable output voltage that is easily programmed from 18 to 50 Volts DC. This rectifier unit can also handle either 100-120 or 200-240 Volts AC input, enhancing its flexibility even further.

“We also have very specific requirements to be able to precisely monitor voltage and current output

for this precision transmission equipment,” continued Martino. “We found that [to be the case] with the GE CP3500.”

The GE CP3500 power conversion technology also offers an “80+ Tianium” rating of up to 95% efficiency. In addition to its power output flexibility and power efficiency, the unit’s compact, high density size proved ideal for RFE’s line of compact FM transmitters. The CP3500 provides 40W/in3 in a single IRU form factor.

GE’s rectifiers are now used in almost three quarters of all of RFE’s FM transmission products, bringing this compact size, power efficiency and power output flexibility to the company’s customers around the world.
