The World in Your Classroom: Multicultural and Global Education Dr. Cathryn Chappell Reese Center, Room 225Presented by Licking County Jobs & Family Services and Ohio Means Jobs-Licking CountyWhen approaching subjects like Multicultural Education and Global Education, it is important that as leaders in education, we first know ourselves. It is sometimes difficult to see ourselves objectively, and quite easy at times to see ourselves as ‘normal’ while viewing everyone else as ‘others.’ In this session, we will participate in an autoethnography exercise, and then explore how to be successful with diverse classrooms and/or groups of people. Enjoy whole-group brainstorming, and a discussion and sharing of best-practice teaching methods and resources.

Dr. Cathryn Chappell is an Associate Professor in the College of Education’s Doctoral Studies & Advanced Programs at Ashland University. She earned her doctorate in 2003 at the University of Cincinnati in the Social and Psychological Foundations of Education. She also holds certificates in Peace Education and Urban Education, with research focused on post-secondary prison education and fair assessments. She has taught multicultural education since 1997, with what she describes as a more relaxed approach today than when she started teaching, due in part to the realization that change and growth are best achieved in small steps; not hitting people over the head or shaming them. Dr. Chappell recognizes we all have our biases; therefore, recognizing and working through them can be a powerful aspect of our lifelong learning.

Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Syndrome: Science Denialism, STEM Educational Crisis, Science Illiteracy & Innumeracy in AmericaDr. Michael Stamatikos Reese Center, Room 223We live in an Information Age where average cell phones having more computing power than all of NASA circa 1969 are bluntly juxtaposed with a rapidly eroding national capacity for accepting unbiased scientific results. The conflation of science denialism and skepticism leads to dubious inferences regarding public perception about the nature of consensus amongst scientists. This disturbing national regression is further exacerbated by a STEM educational crisis and rampant scientific illiteracy/innumeracy amongst the electorate and its appointed government officials, which systematically obstructs our ability to formulate and implement evidence-based policies with bipartisan support. This collective STEM Syndrome is exacerbated by the ambient political dissonance resonating in cyber and cable news echo chambers. But what is science? How do we “know” things? Why is it important? As practitioners of science, we need to help each other understand on all levels, which means enhancing the quality and content of information when communicating our results, their implications and the scientific process, via STEM education and public outreach. Science is not an absolute collection of facts to be memorized, but rather it can be thought of as process: the art of asking the right question(s) - this distinction is paramount. At a time when fundamental science research programs are beingstripped of their critical federal funding, we can locally invest in the future of our children, community and nation. In that regard, I’ll discuss anecdotes from my experience as a science educator/communicator and NASA astrophysicist, in the context of my ongoing initiatives that leverage thebroad public appeal of astronomy, to hopefully play a key role in K-16 STEM education (for students,pre-service and in-service teachers), while encouraging science literacy in the general population.

Dr. Michael (Mike) Stamatikos is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics, Department of Astronomy and Center for Cosmology and Astro-Particles Physics at The Ohio State University. Dr. Stamatikos was widely recognized for his work on Swift, a NASA satellite mission that was ranked the best science mission in its class in two consecutive NASA biennial senior reviews. He will serve as chief science officer at The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology in downtown Newark, through an endowed professorship at The Ohio State University at Newark. Stamatikos is spearheading the installation and management of a state-of-the-art (30-foot, 60-seat, 4k) digital SciDome at The Works that will uniquely provide an immersive, interdisciplinary educational environment for local K-16 students.

Building Partnerships: Collaborating for Success Ucee FaenzaReese, Center Room 245Economic regions within Ohio continue to expand beyond their borders. Two examples include the number of Northeast Ohio companies entering global markets, and the array of foreign companies moving into the region. As a result, a network of support services built upon collaboration and global expertise is required to ensure that U.S. companies continue to effectively enter new markets and strengthen their competitive edge. This session provides specific details on how programs at Monte Ahuja College of Business and its Global Business Center (both integral parts of the global emphasis at Cleveland State University) are consistently modified to reflect industry changes at home and abroad and to be forward thinking about future opportunities and challenges. Key drivers include fundamentally elevating global success by providing expert service in the following ways: knowledge transfer through international business-focused training programs, such as Global Target and Global Reach; applied research for industry utilization; and extensive collaboration with valued entities such as Ohio Development Services Agency and Cleveland USEAC.

Ucee Faenza serves the Ohio Small Business Development Center (SBDC) through the Export Assistance Network and Monte Ahuja College of Business/Global Business Center at Cleveland State University. She is responsible for coordinating events related to the SBDC Export Assistance Network through which she sources and recruits speakers and subject matter experts; and coordinates schedules, event venues and logistics for in-depth training seminars related to export compliance, export finance, export risks, testing and certifications, supply chain, and international management. Faenza has experience in human resources management, consulting and education. She has also assisted individuals and small businesses in product, export logistics and compliance in addition to online and strategic marketing.

With the workforce crisis disrupting employers’ standard hiring practices and productivity, many manufacturers are turning to apprenticeships to train otherwise under-qualified applicants. This session looks at some of the factors contributing to these trends and reviews the global gold standard apprenticeship program in Germany, which serves as a model U.S. employers can adopt. To combat the workforce crisis, the German American Chamber of Commerce® of the Midwest (GACC Midwest) has developed the Industry Consortium for Advanced Technical Training (ICATT), an apprenticeship program established by GACC Midwest in 2015. ICATT is an innovative and industry-led approach to education benchmarked on the German apprenticeship system. ICATT combines practice, theory and work to train a globally competitive workforce. Companies get a tailored training program, greater employee loyalty and access to a high quality candidate pool. Apprentices profit by earning an associate degree with no student debt, a German DIHK certification, as well as guaranteed employment for the time of their training plus at least two years after.

The session will be led by Joshua Seeberg, M.A., a Manager in the Skills Initiative department at the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest, Inc., which has been tasked with implementing the German dual apprenticeship model in the United States. Mr. Seeberg studied and worked in Germany for 7 years, and served as the Executive Director of the German American Chamber of Commerce – Colorado Chapter upon his return to the U.S. Headquartered in Chicago, with a branch office in Detroit, GACC Midwest’s mission is to promote the expansion of bilateral trade and investment between Germany and the United States, especially the Midwest, via the official representation of German companies, membership and consulting services.

Why Community/Civic Leadership is Vital in a Globalized World Leadership Ohio: Todd Kleismit with Janine Boyd, Tim Bubb, Jill Clark, and Megan Evans Warner Center, Room 126Presented by Leadership OhioIn an increasingly globalized world where change is constant and fewer people stay put in their jobs or communities, what are the implications for local and civic leadership? Trends tell us that people aren’t “joiners” anymore and are increasingly disengaging from the rich civic life going on around them. Is this conventional thinking accurate or is this one of the great challenges for leaders in the years ahead? Join a panel discussion facilitated by Todd Kleismit, board president of Leadership Ohio, to examine this topic with several Ohio civic leaders.

Todd Kleismit is a 2013 graduate of Leadership Ohio and now serves on its Board of Trustees as President. Todd has served as the Director of Community and Government Relations for the Ohio History Connection since 2004. He has a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Bowling Green State University and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Ohio University. He is a U.S. Army veteran of Operation Desert Storm. He will be joined by State Reprsentative Janine Boyd (D-Cleveland); Licking County Commissioner Tim Bubb; Jill Clark, John Glenn College of Public Affairs; and Megan Evans, Licking County Foundation.

Growing Your Business with Government and Non-Government Large Scale Contracts: Bidding and the Impact on Cash FlowLara HodgsonWarner Center, Room 264Presented in part by TrueCore Federal Credit UnionLara Hodgson, President & CEO of NOW Corp (also a serial entrepreneur and an Entrepreneur in Residence with the Harvard Business School) will share how more businesses GROW out of business than GO out of business… Until NOW! NOW’s mission is to create “A World without A/R” for all businesses that sell to other businesses and governments with an innovative new payment system, NOWaccount®, that enables businesses to get paid immediately in a way that feels like accepting a credit card for payment even when a card is not offered and an invoice is required. In this session, Lara will share her experiences (as well as some tips) with government and non-government large scale contracts and the impact on cash-flow that led her to start NOW.

Lara serves as President & CEO of NOW Corp, a company she co-founded to free small businesses from the burden of funding trade credit and to enable small business growth. The concept for NOW Corp’s NOWaccount payment system stems from the challenges Lara faced when growing her manufacturing business, Nourish. Lara experienced the challenge of having to fund the trade credit required to support growth. Not finding a solution that worked, she partnered with John Hayes and launched NOW Corp and NOWaccount, the payment system that is changing the way B2B businesses get paid. NOWaccount will create “a world without A/R” and remove a portion of the $1.2T of trade credit that small businesses hold on their balance sheets. NOWaccount’s innovative structure is the subject of a Harvard Business School case study. Additionally, Lara co-founded and served as CEO of Insomnia, LLC, a firm specializing in investment, development and management of complex and innovative “world-changing” projects. She also spent five years at Dewberry Capital Corporation, an Atlanta-based commercial real estate development and investment firm, where she served as the company’s Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Operating Officer. Lara was the Executive Vice President of Dunk, a performance footwear and apparel manufacturing/retail company built on the concept of mass customization and founded with Shaquille O’Neal and Mike Piazza. Lara was the Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Retail and Consumer Products Division of iXL (now Scient), an Internet strategy and consulting firm. Lara began her career with Andersen Consulting as the first Business Analyst in the Strategic Services South Practice. She is an internationally recognized speaker, leading seminars on creativity, innovation and access to capital. Internationally, Lara has worked in Koriyama, Japan with the U.S. Defense Department’s EAGLE Japan Program and served as the Ambassador to Lebanon for the 1996 Olympic Games.
