Kambala is a popular sport in the south-west region of Karnataka in India. A buffalo race - this sporting event has a phenomenal following with around 100 to 130 pairs of buffaloes participating and over 20,000 spectators.

The buffaloes & the runner sprint at a surprising speed of 45 km/hr on a specially prepared muddy track which is 140 meters long and 12 meters wide. The races are tech savy too - there is a video review system, if the decision is clouded due to a close finish.

There are multiple opinions on the origin of this sporting event. Some claim that it was started by kings and some say they were the farmers who came up with this idea.

Kambala’s history goes back a thousand years.

The traditional Kambala started as a part of celebrations and entertainment after the end of rainy season when the farmers are done with the harvest. Over the years it flourished into a big sport for kings, landowners of theTulu region and it became an integral part of the society.

Kambala is still a very popular event in this region and for some, it is a means to earn their livelihood.

The beauty of spilling water under hot sun is treat to watch.

For many it is pride and glory but overall it is pure culture for people of South Karnantaka.

Match boxes have a unique position in the Indian life. Priced cheaply, most houses have matches instead of lighters to ignite the stove. Also an integral part of the daily prayer rituals in many households, one cannot deny the omnipresence of the matchboxes in our daily lives. But, what is even more interesting is the designs and the graphics that have spawned across this tiny canvas.

Page 31: glimpsezine-vloume2

ASSOCIATIONThere are some match box labels that add visual association to what the product is going to be used for. These products carve a niche audience in the market when they showcase a pipe or a packet of beedis. The association gets a little sinister when the labels depict gambling - with the dice or the playing cards related graphics. Denoting the culture of self gratification & pleasure; these labels employ the rationale that if you are in this carefree culture of gambling, drinking etc. you may also reach out for that occasional cigarette hence the need arises for the humble matches.

Page 32: glimpsezine-vloume2

OF PLAGIARISMA countless number of imitations or fakes are found along with the 'original' label design. A sheer artistic ingenuity comes to play as the fakes, though hold their own gives a tremendous recall of the original brand. So whilst, AIM becomes ATM; the latter bears a marked resemblance to the original label.

Popular icons or brands find their way on the match labels with the hope that they would enhance the sales of those match boxes.

So, it is not product diversification for world renowned company - Microsoft, when it's popular Windows logo appears on a matchbox label; But rather, the designer of the label graphics pinning on the desires of the working class to own a computer or a car like in case of Nano matches.

CONSUMERISMThere are also some labels that depict household items like tube light, cycle, a pulley for the well etc. The artist here is maybe trying to play on the desire the common man has for these basic needs that are still a luxury in rural India.
