Dear parents and care givers,

The beginning of a new school year is the opportunity to make a new start. In fact, with the right attitude, we can work together to make this year successful and enjoyable. There is no doubt that for all of us, if you are working hard and achieving success you will be happier, healthier and more optimistic about the future. This is the message we are sharing as a staff and with all of our students.

Here are some tips that we are sharing with children and would appreciate you reinforcing at home as well.

Stop thinking ‘if only.’ No-one else but you can turn your life into what you want it to be.

Set your own standards high and live up to them. Success and happiness come from feeling good about yourself, enjoying the results of your efforts and having self-respect. That is why it is so important to take pride in your work and always give your best effort.

Find enjoyment in your learning. Develop your curiosity. Ask questions. Seek answers; that is what learning is all about. The more you enjoy it, the more successful you will be.

Learn by taking risks. We all learn this way, having a go and seeking feedback on what we have been doing. A positive attitude towards feedback will help to improve performance in work, in sport and in the classroom.

Intelligence takes time to develop. Your brain grows the more you use it. Give time to master new ideas and new skills, knowing that the more you practice, the more you will improve.

Successful people set goals and work hard to achieve them. This way you take charge of your future and always give your best effort.

We are encouraging all of our school community to be determined to achieve their best. Good enough can’t always be good enough for you! Be the best you can be.

We hope that you will be able to join us on Tuesday night, February 13th for Acquaintance Night. This is an opportunity to chat to your teacher and hear about the positive structures they have in their classrooms. We would appreciate you not bringing children into the classrooms. If you cannot organise care for your children, please bring them to a staff member under the COLA and tell your children they can only play in that sheltered area.

Teachers have been working with their classes to develop relationships, class norms and a positive classroom environment. They are encouraged not to test

children for the first two weeks but to get to know their classes and develop the ways of working in their rooms. The teachers will meet you in their classrooms and tell you more about this on Tuesday night.

6.00-6.30pm Reception to Year 3 6.45-7.15pm Year 4-Year7

Below is a list of all of the teaching staff for this year and the places you will find them. We work closely as a team with a strong commitment to improving learning outcomes and supporting children to achieve their personal best. We invite you to introduce yourself and say hi to each of us at any time. We believe that a strong learning environment is created through positive attitudes and strong relationships. We encourage you to work with us to develop these partnerships.

Kind regards, Rae, Anthony, Bobbie, Malcolm, Paul and Sue

One of the essential components of a successful school is the building of sound relationships. At Glenelg we focus on learning, we work collaboratively to achieve our goals and we focus on results that fuel continuous improvement. This is the foundation for Professional Learning Communities (PLC). We believe that learning is maximised when quality relationships between home and school, teacher and student, student and peers are developed and maintained. Our aim is for adults and children to work together to build effective learning partnerships. To assist in this process we would like to give a short introduction to ourselves and we look forward to meeting and chatting with you at Acquaintance Night next Tuesday the 12th February. A photo board is displayed in the front office. Come in and check us out! This map will help you find us.

Qkr!

This is an easy to use mobile app for Iphones and Android smartphones and tablets that make school payments easy. Simply search Qkr! on the App Store or Google Play. Qkr! can be used for school charges, excursions, lunch orders, and school uniform accounts.

Payments can also of course be made by phone or at the front office in person.

Toilets We would just like to let everyone know that over the holiday period the toilets in the main building we painted and all toilets were steam cleaned. They are thoroughly cleaned every night after school and we are currently wiping down seats and flushing toilets after every break. (Thanks so much to the ancillary staff who have agreed to do this when it is clearly not in their job brief.) We are finding that the biggest problems are children not flushing, and in the JP boys’ toilet particularly, it seems that the boys have not learnt how to aim for the bowl! Your help in reinforcing this at home would be greatly appreciated.

Dogs A reminder to all families and friends that it is a DECD policy that dogs are not allowed on school premises, and definitely not in buildings. Some people have allergies to dogs and some young children are still quite scared of them. Also the dogs sometimes become startled by the crowds of people and behave unsafely. For this reason DECD have ruled that dogs can only be on the school grounds with explicit permission from the principal. This is not just a request from the school but a regulation for government schools.

If you are walking your dog to school then please arrange a meeting point with your children near the gate. We would also appreciate your assistance in telling neighbours of this ruling. We have been told of dogs given drinks from the drinking fountains our children drink from at the weekend. These troughs are cleaned regularly but we would all prefer not to have dogs near where the children drink the refrigerated water.

Australian Girls Choir The Australian Girls’ Choir is holding free trial classes in February and would like to invite girls in Reception to Year 4 to come along. For more information please look for the flyer in the front office or call 1800338142

Piano teacher at Glenelg PS Glenelg PS has a private piano teacher; Laura. She started conducting lessons here at school this week; families make arrangements, payments etc directly with the piano teacher. Here is some information from the piano teacher.

Hi everyone, my name is Laura Tink and I have successfully completed my Bachelor of Music degree at the Elder Conservatorium, studying under author, and concert pianist, Dr Anna Goldsworthy. With Julia and Josh not at Glenelg Primary School in 2018, I am thrilled to be the new piano teacher at Glenelg Primary School in 2018. I am looking forward to working with continuing pupils and I am open to accepting new piano students. I already have many students I am going to be working with but I do have a final few places available. M: 0459590496 E: [email protected]

Please be aware that if your child is having private music lessons during school time you will need to sign a DECD Parent Request Form for the children to leave their classroom, and return it to the piano teacher, who will then pass the form on to other staff at school. Students during lessons are not under the supervision of school staff but in ‘the care’ of the piano teacher.

DCSI checks DCSI (Department for Communities and Social Inclusion) screening checks are required for any adult who would like to assist at school with overnight sleepovers, camps, helping change children after swimming etc. Additionally, if an adult is not a parent of a child in the class (i.e. grandparent), that adult needs a DCSI clearance to assist with any school activity (hearing reading, attending excursions etc).

Although a DCSI clearance is very similar to a ‘Police check’, it is not the same thing; the only accepted document in SA public schools is the DCSI clearance. If you would like to get a DCSI clearance, please see Anthony Fischer (Deputy Principal) at school to commence the online process – it is no longer possible to apply via a paper form. The screening clearance is not free, although the school will cover costs in some instances. Once an adult completes their part of the online process, it can take anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks to receive the clearance.

Signing children out

Just a reminder to everyone about our policy for signing children out of school early. We believe there is a need to provide processes that ensure student safety when collecting children early.

For this reason, you will be asked to provide photo ID when you collect children from school before the end of the school day. When you come in to sign a child out, you will be given a slip to pass to the teacher that identifies you so that teachers can be sure the child is being released to the correct person. If you have a person other than a parent collecting your child, you will need to phone (8295 3943) or email the school office to inform us of who is collecting the child and why they are leaving early. Your allocated person can then show photo ID to the office staff and collect a sign out sheet to pass on to parents. This is our duty of care to the children at school.

Tutoring/therapy We have had many tutors (often funded by NDIS) contact us about working here at school during the day. We are not able to accommodate this for a couple of reasons. Firstly, there is no space for them to work at school. They would be required to have their DCSI clearance and DECD now have paperwork to complete asking for insurance. Parents are also required to sign a request for using a non-DECD service provider on school premises during school hours and it is required that the tutor is in line of sight of a teacher (who still has duty of care) and we cannot provide that. Secondly, we feel it is important that this therapy happen at home so that parents can follow it up. These sessions are to achieve therapeutical goals, not educational goals.

We believe that the educational program of the classroom teacher is paramount to student learning during school time.

Glenelg Primary School Summer Sport - Terms 1 and 4 2018 School sport starts up again Week 3 and we'd love to have your children back playing sport with us, keeping fit and making friends.

Sport registration forms have been sent home and team registrations close this week. Forms are available from the front office or may be printed off at home from our school website. On our school website you will also find the sports information booklets detailing each sport's playing days, team sizes, ages of play etc. The link is: www.glenelgps.sa.edu.au/parentinformation/school sport

🏀 Please note registration forms were due back MONDAY 5th FEBRUARY, but

we will extend it until the end of this week to allow families a bit more time. 🏀

Payments are also able to be made this year through the Qkr! App, just record the receipt number on the registration form before dropping it to the front office. Should you require a payment plan, please see Colleen Wortmeyer in our front office.

We are always looking for parent coaches. Your children really do love having you involved, we'd love to see some new faces helping out! Without parent support we simply cannot have the hundreds of children playing school sport that we do.

📱Remember to please "Like" our Sport at Glenelg on Facebook for updates throughout the year. Any queries please don't hesitate to contact Michelle Fountas by email : [email protected]

Mwangaza Children’s Choir School Visit Last Friday we were extremely lucky to have the Mwangaza Children’s Choir come and perform in Glenelg Primary School. The children are from Uganda in Africa, and are aged between 9 and 13 years old. They demonstrated lots of talent and everyone really enjoyed watching their energetic singing, dancing and drumming routines. Some children were drumming while jumping in the air in between drumbeats. By the end of the performance, the sweat was running down their faces but they never gave up. It was really exciting and inspiring to watch and listen to them. Their voices were amazing. The Choir are currently touring Australia raising money to build a state of the art secondary school in Uganda. The tour is called ‘The Light up Tour’. The children told us that they were selected from different Ugandan schools, and have been practising every day for 7 months. They also showed us some fantastic photographs of the wildlife in Africa and shared some of their language. We were amazed by their enthusiasm and resilience and we hope that they raise enough money to build their secondary school throughout their tour. They are a fantastic choir and hopefully they will come back to Glenelg Primary to perform in the future.
