As a staff we are beginning to consider the structure of classes for next year and following this, the placement of children. Firstly, if you know of any children that might be planning to attend Glenelg Primary School next year, please ask those families to come in now and enrol for 2018. If you are leaving the school at the end of the year, please make sure that you send a note to school so that we can mark our lists accordingly. This information is vital to us in the planning process and affects the structure of classes and the staffing situation for 2018. As you may have heard in the media, DECD and the Minister of Education have now enforced a Capacity Management Plan to assist us in managing the size of the school. We do not have the physical space to continue growing and we therefore are limiting the intake of receptions each year to 100. If we have more than 100 enrolments there will be a process to choose those that best meet the criteria. This may mean that sibling rights do not apply. The full document is available on the school’s website to read. Each year we invite parents to contact us with regard to specific educational requirements for their child’s placement for next year. Leadership and teachers use their prior knowledge of students, friendship groupings and the specific needs of your child to place them into the best possible learning environment. They also gather information from children with regard to friendships. It is an involved process to which we devote a lot of time and thought. Parents are welcome to write a short letter about their child’s educational needs for next year. This is not a time to request a particular teacher but a chance to inform us of any relevant information in regards to your child’s learning situation or placement. With a school as large and complex as this one, we are not able to make promises about children being placed with particular teachers or in specific situations. Please address the letter to Rae Taggart and mark it ‘Private and confidential’. These need to be at school by the end of week one next term, Friday 20 th October for consideration. Please include your child’s name, their current year level, and their class teacher’s name in your letter. Class placement is an involved process to which we devote a lot of time and energy. We aim to have classes balanced with children of varying abilities and teams of children that will work well together. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday. See you on Tuesday 17 th October. Kind regards, Rae, Anthony, Bobbie, Paul and Malcolm

Year 6 student project to be a change agent

In Room 20 we have been learning that we need to be the change we want to see in the world.

We think education is very important and we wanted to make sure that children in Nepal can go to school. We found out that it costs $90 to employ a teacher for a month so we are aiming to cover the costs of a teacher's salary until the end of the year. For our Yr6 project, we have organised this Trash and Treasure Market and hope that you can support us.

Thank you, Jazmin, Saraya, Katherine (and Ms Jenkins)

Help in the Canteen We are having some really big days of purchases in the Canteen using the Qkr app. It is working well but the increase in demand also means we desperately need more help in the Canteen. If you have just an hour or maybe a morning that you could volunteer in the Canteen, please talk to Caroline to arrange it.

Sport – coaches We will be starting summer sports again next term so if you have some time you can donate to coaching or managing a team it would be appreciated. Michelle is always looking for support to make these things happen for the students at Glenelg. You may be able to volunteer with someone else to share the load – e.g., one do training and the other do games.

Year Book For many years now the hard working group of Teaching and SSO staff have put in a considerable amount of work to piece together our Glenelg Primary School yearbooks. You may recall we surveyed the School Community recently about this in terms of interest in purchasing a book. The results were disappointing as very few completed the survey, however as a Governing Council we feel that the yearbooks are an important part of the School Community in telling the story of Glenelg at a point in time. For those students leaving us each year they serve as a fitting memento of their time with us. As such we resolved to meet the cost of each family receiving one yearbook as a gift from the school provided that at 31 October your school fees were paid in full, or a payment plan commenced. Additional copies of the yearbook will be available for purchase through the School office. Clinton Jury Chair – Governing Council

Grounds Development During these school holidays we will have a team of people working on the grounds. They will be top dressing the lawn, replacing dead areas of lawn, trimming bushes, repairing paths and generally upkeeping the grounds. This is the focus of all P & F fundraising this year, providing us with safe, attractive and creative playing spaces for children.

Festival of Music Fifty two of our students performed on stage at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre as part of the Public Primary Schools Festival of Music on Friday 15th September. This year, for the first time in many years, the choir was composed of over a 1000 students returning to the past, when the choral festival was known as The Thousand Voice Choir. The Primary Schools Festival of Music, an official state icon, is a public school-based music education program which is a collaboration between DECD and the SAPPS Music Society, which gives all SA public primary students the opportunity to perform at a prestigious venue. This year the Festival started with a big bang, as an “Arena Percussion Group” opened the concert while all 1000 students filed onto stage. It was a spectacular event that our students enjoyed being a part of.

Lost property A group of parents will be meeting in the staffroom on Friday morning at 9.00am (just after dropping children) to sort through the huge pile of lost property and return any named items to their owners. If you can help for 30 minutes to an hour, Rosie our organizer, would love to see you.

Signing children out We would like to inform everyone that we believe we need to ‘tighten up’ our processes for picking up children early so that we can ensure student safety.

For this reason, from the start of next term you will be asked to provide photo ID when you collect children from school before the end of the school day. When you come in to sign a child out, you will be given a slip that identifies you to pass to the teacher so that they can be sure the child is being released to the correct person. This is our duty of care to the children at school.

Bring a friend to chess On the 8th of September, our school held Bring a Friend to

Chess day. Students could bring a family member or

friend, to play chess with them for the afternoon. Everyone

had lots of fun, and it was amazing to see all the relatives

and friends show up to play chess. There were a range of chess sets, including wall chess, large

chess, garden chess, normal chess and Simpsons’ chess. It was a successful afternoon and everyone

left with a smile on their face. By Billy Wright

STEM with Spheros In the Far East classrooms, we have been making a mini golf course for our Spheros. Spheros are small ball-shaped robots that connect to an app on our iPads and we can move them by programming or driving.

In our first lesson, we got into groups and started to research mini golf courses to get inspiration for our designs. Some groups had trouble choosing a theme and an obstacle course that would fit into the 75cmx200cm sheet of paper.

Next we had to make a design in colour. We made our labelled designs on grid paper and had to make a scale so that our mini golf course design would be accurate. We also needed to list our materials and where we were going to get them.

Once we had finished making our designs, we started making our obstacles. We needed to paint our base, including a black circle representing a hole. We had to make sure that we did not glue our obstacles onto the base as we needed to roll them up and store them away.

Once our golf course was finished, we started to code our Spheros. They needed to travel from the start to the finish of

the mini golf course without hitting the obstacles. We also couldn’t go out of bounds (the edge of the sheet of paper) and couldn’t stop.

Once we’ve successfully programmed our Sphero through the course, we had to evaluate. On a piece of paper, we had to write down what we researched before we started making, how well our course matched our design, what was the biggest problem we had to solve and if we did this task again, what would we change?

Once we had answered all of the questions, we switched our course with another group and tried to program our Sphero through the other team’s course.

It was really fun and challenging, some parts were frustrating when things didn’t work. Programming was especially challenging

because when things didn’t work, you had to go back and change lots of work. It was a really fun experience but sometimes it got frustrating. We enjoyed it and learned lots.

Outdoor Classroom Day On Thursday 21st September, 10 Junior Primary classes participated in ‘Outdoor Classroom Day’. The day, originally planned for September 7th, but postponed in the wait for good weather, is a global event, with over 17,000 schools participating around the world. At Glenelg Primary School, Rooms 2, 3, 9, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 decided to take part in the event. The teachers planned different activities that involved the students in a whole day of outdoor learning. Students enjoyed participating in the following outdoor experiences: Obstacle Course, Yoga, Stick Weaving, Fence-Tying, Mandala Patterning, Nature Art, Gardening, Construction, Nature Scavenger Hunt, Reading and Book-Making, Dress-Ups and Theatre Performance, and Sandpit STEM.

The day was an absolutely wonderful experience for the students, and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We had such positive feedback from the students about the day, which made all the effort worthwhile! A big thank you to all of the teachers involved, as it was such a fantastic day, and it was fabulous to see all of the classes and students outside when you were walking through the yard. They were so engaged with each of the activities and really enjoyed the opportunity to experience new things! Thank you also to the wonderful Year 7s who helped with setting up, packing away and supporting younger students with the obstacle course; your help was greatly appreciated.

Capacity Management Plan

DECD and the Minister of Education have now put in place a plan to manage the enrolments at Glenelg primary School. Our capacity is set at 800 students and we can only accept 100 receptions each year. This means that if we have a huge enrolment as we did in January this year, we will have to not accept any out of zone enrolments and there will be criteria to select the 100 children from within our zone. It may mean that siblings from out of zone parents will not be accepted, it may mean that some children within the zone are directed to other schools in the Holdfast Partnership. For 2018 at this time we do not have 100 receptions so no action is needed regarding the Plan at the moment.

The process for future enrolments will now need to change with only a registration of interest to be lodged with the school and then at the end of September in 2018, you will be invited to enrol if you meet the criteria. There will be some work in setting this process up but the benefit to our students will be that our school will not continue to grow to an unacceptable level and we will have manageable play spaces for the children.
