Focusing the Gospel

Conflicting hopes and expectations of the long-awaited “age of the messiah” collide in today’s

gospel.

Jesus makes clear the great paradox of discipleship: Do you wish to be first? Then become last.

Do you seek to attain greatness? Then become small. Do you want to be masters? Then become

the servants of those you wish to rule.

To emphasise the point, Jesus picks up and places a little child in the midst of these would-be

masters. A child has no influence in the affairs of society. Just the opposite is true: a child needs

everything. To be ‘great’ in the reign of God, Jesus says, one must receive the “child,” and become

self-giving.

PRAYING FOR OUR FARMERS IN THESE TOUGH TIMES

SOCIAL JUSTICE STATEMENT 2018-2019

We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on 30th September. This year, the Australian Bishops’ Social Justice Statement is titled: A Place to Call Home: Making a home for everyone in our land.

The Statement challenges us all to confront Australia’s growing rate of homelessness and unaffordable housing.

For further details about the Social Justice Statement, visit the Australian Catholic Social Justice website: www.socialjustice.catholic.ord.au or call (02) 8306 3499.

HAVE YOU SIGNED FR. ADRIAN (NOONAN’S) CARD?

Fr Adrian Noonan will be moving from the Kadina Parish to Villa Murphy in Adelaide, where there is the company of other priests and family support.

Please add your signature/note of farewell to the card on Tom’s Table.

Thought for the Week

Well-to-do parents who work hard to give their kids everything have to be helped a lot … young people need lots of love and forgiveness … things don’t really matter.

(Fr. Bill Edwards sdb)

THE POWER OF PRAYER: CASTING A NET

Prayer is one of the great treasures we have. It was Jesus who said: Ask and you shall receive. It is a rich grace to ask to be given something.

Following Dick Harris’ very fruitful initiative to launch an All-Night Prayer Vigil John Meffert has proposed that our St. Mary of the Angels’ Parish embark on another prayer initiative. It is something John feels strongly called to promote.

It simply requires two or three people to gather to pray for the specific intention of priestly and religious vocations.

It has its scriptural underpinnings in John 21:1-14, the post-Resurrection story of the miraculous catch of fish. They could not haul the net in, so great was the haul of fish.

The net is those who embrace the invitation to pray. It might happen weekly or fort-nightly, in the Church or in your homes, whatever works for you. Some resources will be provided. We ask God to grant the increase … to fill the net.

We plant the seed of prayer and nurture it regularly. Our Lord, in His good time and way will grant the increase … perhaps thirty, sixty or even a hundred-fold.

If you’d like to be part of this Parish Prayer Net add your name to the list on Tom’s Table and feel free to chat to John Meffert if you’d like to know more.

HOLY CLUTTER BURIAL CEREMONY

What are you supposed to do with all the broken, damaged rosary beads, Ash

Wednesday palms, prayer cards and other religious objects that accumulate and

mysteriously multiply. If you feel overwhelmed by all this Holy Clutter, take heart!

You are not obliged to hang on to them and there is a way to dispose of them.

Traditionally some parishes on the 23rd of June, (eve of the Feast of John the

Baptist) have a service to burn and bury broken, unwanted or unusable sacramental

as a community. Next year we will plan to do a service in June. In the mean time you

can dispose of items yourself using the simple ceremony printed on Tom’s Table.

PLENARY COUNCIL 2020

As the listening and dialogue process continues to spread its way across the country,

the importance of listening, and listening with real hope, is becoming more evident.

The effort to listen to one another and to hear what others are thinking and feeling

can help each person to better understand their own stories and experiences and

how they align with their fellow Catholic pilgrims. Go directly to Plenary Council

2020 website OR visit jedocatholicperth and check their Plenary Post for

interesting questions and answers such as the following.

Who attends the Plenary Council sessions?

“Plenary” refers to the Council being attended by all local churches that are in

Australia. This means the geographical dioceses such as Brisbane Archdiocese,

Lismore Diocese etc, as well as the other local churches, which include the Military

Diocese, Eastern Church Eparchies and others of this nature. Altogether, Australia

has 34 “local churches”.

The delegates of the Council sessions are leaders with particular roles in our local

churches. These are outlined in canon law (c. 443) and fall into two categories: those

who must be called, and those who can be called.

WANTING TO COME ON A JOURNEY TO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?

The Catholic Church is one of many Christian Churches. If you want to be a

Catholic Christian, St Mary of the Angels Church would like to answer your

question.
