The SMU International Office (IO) and our suite of Global Student Programmes give you opportunities to learn and thrive outside your comfort zone. Gain new perspectives on global issues to deepen your understanding of your place in the world – and how to transform it for the better.

1. See more of the world and experience first-hand how other communities, cultures and universities learn, think, live, work and play.

2. Socialise with people from all over the world and expand your personal and professional networks.

3. Study productively towards your degree by gaining credits that contribute to your academic programme at SMU.

4. Settle into your host university, city and country with the assurance of round-the-clock assistance through International SOS, SMU’s emergency service provider since 2017.

5. Support is available, if you need it. SMU offers a wide range of scholarships, grants and loan schemes.

BROADEN YOUR PERSPECTIVES

Short-term Study Programme (SSP)SSPs are an efficient way to immerse yourself in the experience of studying and living abroad for a shorter duration. They last for two to four weeks during the SMU term break between May and July*, and allow you to transfer up to two credits towards your SMU degree programme. Unlike ISEP, SSP programme fees are applicable. We organise short-term programmes with:

• Ateneo de Manila University

• Gadjah Mada University

• Humboldt University of Berlin

• Koç University

• Catholic University of Leuven

• Shanghai University of Finance and Economics

Stay open-minded and invest in deep conversations with the people you meet on exchange – by their sheer diversity and

different perspectives, they will broaden your horizons. The ISEP experience will prepare you for life and work overseas,

wherever you choose to go.

Fostering cultural intelligence requires time, effort, and willingness to question our own assumptions.

I’m truly grateful that this is a priority at SMU.

International Student Exchange Programme (ISEP)ISEP is an opportunity for you to spend one academic term overseas for a duration of 16 to 24 weeks, studying at one of our partner universities to earn up to five credits towards your SMU degree programme. You will continue to pay your tuition and miscellaneous fees to SMU, and need not bear tuition fees at your host university. Applications for ISEP open in January and May for Terms One and Two respectively. Learn to live, study and play confidently abroad as you experience a different culture, a different country and different perspectives.

*We also partner Gadjah Mada University to run the SSP during the December term break.

The many visits and lessons at the local universities helped us to gain a better perspective of Chinese history

and culture, as well as its economy and its enterprises. The programme was a great way to gain overseas exposure,

allowing me to understand the Chinese in ways that would not be taught in

the classroom.

SSUE 2017 Nanjing and Yunnan, China

The SSUE is a subsidised and non credit-bearing programme jointly organised by the education ministries of Singapore and China. It comprises two reciprocal legs in China and Singapore, each lasting two weeks in May and July respectively. Students from both countries gain an immersive experience of each other’s perspectives, cultures and way of life, while nurturing friendships across borders. Consider SSUE if you are Singaporean or a Permanent Resident not originally from China, seeking a short-term overseas stint. You should be proficient in Mandarin and open-minded with an interest to learn more about China, as well as be willing to host your Chinese counterparts and share Singapore insights.

Applications for SSUE will open in February via an email from IO, and we will invite shortlisted applicants for an interview.

My greatest takeaways from this study-abroad experience have surprisingly nothing to do with Montreal or McGill University and has everything to do with the amazing people that I’ve met and the friendships that I’ve forged.I had the privilege to talk to and learn from people of diverse cultural backgrounds, and I learnt more about each

of their local cultures, foods, music, slangs, perspectivesand even family backgrounds.

Tips to optimise your experience abroad• Start planning for your Global Student Programme at least six to eight months before

your intended overseas term. It is important for you to attend the Application Briefings organised by IO for the various programmes. The information for each term may differ, so make sure you come for the right briefings.

• Discuss your options with your family and loved ones to ensure their support and peace of mind while you are overseas.

• Be open-minded and willing to step out of your comfort zone. Adaptability, resourcefulness and a friendly disposition are key to a fulfilling experience.

• Familiarise yourself with the political, legal, social, economic and cultural aspects of your destination. This will help manage your expectations and keep surprises to a minimum. As a bonus, a little bit of local knowledge also helps in striking up conversations with new friends.

• Understand your financial commitments and budget appropriately for living costs overseas. Start saving up early and explore financial support options available to you.

Being able to interact personally with local business owners to appreciatethe opportunities and challenges they face made it easier for us to understand the concepts taught in class.

My interactions with UGM lecturers and students lent a local perspective to issues discussed, which added depth to my learning experience.
