You’ve made it to medical school – congratulations! Whether you’re coming straight out of A-levels, or you’ve been around the block a few times, you’ll have a fantastic time here at GKT.

What now? Well, you’ll !nd everything you need to know about your !rst few weeks in this Guide, including everything about our jam-packed Freshers’ Fortnight, from the Meet and Greet to the Floating Ball.

e most important message I can give you at this point is to get involved! Join some groups, try out some new sports, go for something completely different - the MSA supports a huge number of societies covering various

charities and academic interests, as well as having our own medics sports teams that proudly represent GKT (and some of its more unusual traditions) every week.

Aside from the great social events we run, the MSA is also here to support your welfare and educational

needs – more details on this can be found throughout this guide.

Best of luck with your degree – studying medicine can be hard work and it is a long 5 years (or 6, or 4, or maybe even 7…) but you will have a damn great time getting there. Like they say, these are the best days of your lives.

Guy’s, King’s, and St. omas’ Hospitals Medical Students’ Association (GKT MSA) President (2014-2015)

ABOUT THE MSAThe GKT Medical Students’ Association (MSA) has one main aim - to improve the lives of GKT’s medical students by ensuring their social, academic, and welfare needs are met at all times.

We organise a busy calendar of social events throughout the year, from the Freshers’ Fortnight in September through to the Summer Ball in June. In amongst this are many year-specific events, like the Post Electives Mixer for final years and the Halfway Dinner for third years.

We regularly attend academic meetings with the School of Medicine to ensure that the views of students are listened to. On top of this, we run a Peer Teaching scheme, in which clinical year students mentor pre-clinical students; and we host a number of revision lectures and workshops throughout the year.

Our Peer Support scheme is a confidential, student-run advice service for anyone facing personal or academic problems. We also host an annual Wellness Week, bringing together the numerous welfare services available on campus; and a Mums and Dads scheme to help new students settle in.

If that wasn’t enough, we have a number of subcommittees - including the GKT Christmas Comedy Revue, who put on three nights of sketches and songs every November; MSA Musical Theatre, who turn the Greenwood Lecture Theatre into Broadway every January; and GKT RAG, who tirelessly fundraise thoughout the year, raising tens of thousands of pounds for their selected charities in the process.

Adam Mayers - PresidentDespite being older than Rick Astley’s “Never Going to Give You Up”, this Cambridge graduate managed to blag his way from VP Academic to President. We suspect that his notorious Movember ‘tache played no small part in that transition...

Nicola Smallcombe - VP AcademicThe undisputed queen of the middle class, Nicola has

never once been wrong in her life. When she’s not busy freaking out over a deadline two months away, she

dabbles in musical theatre - don’t speak to her about Les Miserables unless you have an hour to spare!

Victoria Hudson - VP Social‘Tor’, as she prefers to be called, is a woman with a mission - to provide the men and women of GKT with an exciting calendar of social events. When she’s not doing that, you’ll find her climbing a mountain, or crying over a documentary on elephant poaching.

Andrew Baigey - SecretaryGKT’s most eligible bachelor has it all - he’s cultured,

stylish, athletic, and the only member of the committee allowed to write his own bio. A self-proclaimed MNOC,

he’s hoping to use the MSA’s written output to elevate to the big leagues. Don’t take his tour of Boland House.

Julian Ahluwalia - Welfare OfficerJulian is simultaneously the youngest and the poshest ever member of the MSA Committee. In only one year at GKT he’s made quite the name for himself - getting involved with the KCL Rowing Club, RAG, and KCLSU. See how long it takes him to mention his old school.

Sandeep Nayar - TreasurerThrough years of hard work, Sandeep has managed to combine the physicality of Arnold Schwarzenegger with the intellect of Albert Einstein. His distinguished career as Treasurer has spanned four years and over five different societies - with not a penny out of place.

Juli McCulloch - Sports and Societies OfficerDiminutive Juli is a legend in the GKT Womens’ Football

Club - ask anyone that’s lent her an open container on a long coach journey. And don’t be fooled by her cute

looks - her surname literally translates as ‘Son of Wild Boar’, so you know she’s not to be messed with.

Josh Fisher - Newsletter and IT OfficerDon’t be confused if you don’t see much of Josh during the Freshers’ Fortnight, as he has a nasty habit of getting himself banned from Guy’s Bar. And ignore his chat - the vast likelihood is that you’ve played more rugby matches for Guy’s Hospital RFC than he has.

Megan Joyce - Alumni OfficerMegan’s love for the GKT Alumni community has led to

her being the only final year on the MSA Committee. Once she returns from her elective, you’ll be sure to see

her in Guy’s Bar, acting in a demure and ladylike fashion with the rest of her beloved Netball team.

Harry Alcock - Sponsorship OfficerWhat can we say about Harry? On the one hand, he rakes in thousands in sponsorship money year on year. On the other hand, he has a pathological need to express every single bloody thought to the tune of ‘Let It Go’. Ask him about his weekend in Bristol last year.

Martyn Lakeland - Publicity OfficerDon't let his alternative looks and hipster ways fool you -

Martyn is known for his cool, calm, and easygoing attitude. In his free time he enjoys Game of Thrones,

falling off his bike, and losing at FIFA. Bonus points to the first fresher to find his ‘other’ piercing...

Yaseen Serry - Academic Events OfficerYaseen once asked Santa if he could use his magic to make Pokémon real. That was in 2013. When he isn’t busy roaming Kanto in search of Mewtwo, you can probably find him fixing up his hair, or posing for one of his famous #selfies.

Vikram Vignaraja - Social Events OfficerTinder legend Vikram has asked more people out on dates than he’s had hot dinners. If you do end up having a drink with him and the conversation runs dry, ask him about his favourite tea blend, the puppy rental service he regularly uses, or his famous ‘Mikram’ bromance.

Theo Willison-Parry - Academic Events OfficerA unique and special snowflake from the North, Theo’s

life peaked three years ago when he was the GKT RAG President. We know this because he hasn’t stopped

talking about it since. His other interests include playing football, meticulous handwashing, and browsing Reddit.

Harriet Pittaway - Social Events OfficerLover of Chicken Cottage branded doormats, Harriet’s

severe FOMO last year led to her attending every single Freshers’ Fortnight event. Look out for her in Guy’s

Bar’s regular sea of purple hockey polos, and NEVER threaten to shave her boyfriend’s head.

Guy’s Hospital was founded in 1721 by Sir Thomas Guy, a rich philanthropist and governor of St Thomas’. Guy’s was initially the ‘hospital for incurables’ and took on patients that St Thomas’ couldn’t treat (bearing in mind that at this stage Tommy’s was literally just across the road). This link between the hospitals has persisted ever since, though has been tentative at times.

King’s College was founded in 1829 as an Anglican answer to the secular and thus ‘Godless’ institution known as University College London, or UCL. Medical students trained at King’s from the beginning but it wasn’t until 1840 that King’s College Hospital was founded.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ students trained at both campuses, with medical training mainly at Guy’s and surgical at Tommy’s, until 1830 when the hospitals decided to go their separate ways.

The three medical schools remained separate until 1982, when rivalry between Guy’s and Tommy’s surgeons caused a fight during an operation, causing both sides to realise their long repressed feeling for one another. The merger of Guy’s and St Thomas’ created the United Medical and Dental Schools, or UMDS. Admittedly, this was a rubbish

Of the three, St Thomas’ is the oldest, having been founded in 1107 as a

monastery hospital of St Mary Priory, next to Southwark Cathedral. This makes Tommy’s the

second oldest hospital in London! It was rebranded in 1553 with its current title, named after

Thomas Becket, by Edward VI, which is why the image of Edward adorns both the GKT hockey and football ties.

When London Bridge Station was built in the 1850s, St Thomas’ was moved from its location on St Thomas’ Street to its

current location across the river from The Houses of Parliament.

WHAT IS10

GKT?name, but the match seemed to work swimmingly for a while, though it was not fiscally watertight. In 1998, after money troubles and a trend towards globalisation and unification, King’s College London bought up UMDS, creating Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School, or GKT, as it was affectionately known.

The more literate among you will notice that ‘GKT’ is in alphabetical order, and includes the name of each teaching hospitals, thus preserving the rich history and traditions of all three establishments. More recently this has irked the powers-that-be at KCL, and in a magnificent move of bureaucracy, the name was changed again in 2005 to ‘King’s College London Medical School at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals’, or simply ‘KCLMS’.

Though this is now the official title of the medical school, medical students and consultants alike across London and the UK still recognise and admire the title GKT, and the reputations and traditions of all three hospitals draw respect internationally.

ends. ough they maintain reasonable academic standards, their personalities leave much to be desired.

ROYAL FREE AND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE MEDICAL SCHOOL (RUMS OR UCL MEDICS)

Not to be confused with ordinary UCL students, this lot hate UCL even more than the Strand does. A reasonably fun bunch with a swish looking

hospital on Euston Road, they give as good as they get.

BARTS AND THE LONDON (NOW OWNED BY QUEEN MARY)e oldest medical school in London, they drew the short straw and are

now owned by a polytechnic. However they’ve managed to maintain their name and traditions, so uphold many of the great medical traditions.

ST GEORGE’SHave managed to resist being merged with anyone else, probably because nobody wants them. Based all the way out in Tooting, and struggling to

comprehend their own degree subjects, you are unlikely to encounter them too often. eir hospital bar is spectacular.

4/5/6 years, so the sooner you get to know it, the better. Use our handy campus guide to navigate, or if all else fails, ask a member of our extra-friendly security staff for directions.Guy’s HospitalIt may look suspiciously like a block of council flats but this is actually the tallest hospital in the world, and also bears a passing resemblance to a giant squirrel (once you’ve seen it, you’ll never un-see it). It’s worth a trip up in the lifts (or stairs, if you’re feeling fit) for the amazing view over London. Of particular note to you freshers will be the Minor Injuries unit for post-Guy’s Bar aches and pains, and the sexual health clinic for post-Guy’s Bar errors in judgement.Boland House (red on map)The home of the students’ union on Guy’s Campus, Boland House contains The Spit (so called as it used to contain the hospital’s TB ward), and the wonderful Guy’s Bar down in the basement. The Spit contains a social area for students as well as the KCLSU ticket desk, where you’ll be able to buy your tickets for all the Freshers’ Fortnight events. Guy’s Bar plays host to Sports Nights every Wednesday and a number of other events throughout the year. Upstairs in Boland House are studios for dance and exercise classes, and meeting rooms available for student groups.New Hunt’s House (violet on map)This swish modern building contains the main library on Guy’s Campus, as well as a number of computer rooms, one of which is open 24 hours year-round for when deadlines are looming. On the ground floor there is plenty of seating and a reasonably priced café. NHH becomes a social hub in the exam period, so get there early to secure a prime library spot.Hodgkin Building (orange on map)Opposite New Hunts’ House are three rather fancy-looking Victorian buildings; these formed the main hospital and medical school buildings before the Guy’s Tower monstrosity was built in the 70s. You’ll probably recognise Hodgkin from your interviews, so may feel a reflex nausea on first re-entering. This will soon pass as you’ll be spending a lot of time here in Years 1+2, in various classrooms and lecture theatres. It’s also home to the

GUY’S CAMPUSDissection Rooms where you’ll learn anatomy in the most hands-on way possible, and the amazing Gordon Museum which contains thousands of pathological specimens.Henriette Raphael Building (blue on map)This building contains the Academic Centre, where you’ll be sent to hand in coursework, pick up lecture notes, and get replacement student cards for when you inevitably lose yours on a wild night out. Many academic staff have their offices here so you may meet your personal tutor in this building.Shepherds House (green on map)Shepherds House is the home of the clinical skills centre, where you’ll learn skills such as CPR, taking blood pressure and that particularly tricky task: hand-washing. You’ll soon associate it with a sensation of impending doom as it is the venue for OSCEs (clinical exams) from second year onwards.Greenwood Lecture Theatre (yellow on map)Just around the corner from campus lies the Greenwood, where you will spend many hundreds of hours over the next two years trying desperately to work out what the lecturer is talking about, or having a lovely nap.

In its 103rd year, Raising and Giving (RAG) is the largest and most active student-run fundraising organisation at King's. Having been named Society of the Year 2012 and Fundraising Group of the Year 2013, we are back for another year of mischief, merriment and money-raising! Our theme this year is Lights… Camera... RAG! as we seek to bring the glamour of Hollywood to our little corner of London.

We are supporting 4 great charities this year:- Together We Can; which includes both the Evelina Children’s Hospital and Guy’s Cancer Centre (being built right round the corner!).- Medicinema; which builds cinemas for patients in hospital.

- War Child that aims to protect children in areas affected by conflict.

LEARN THE LINGO

BNOC - abbrev. Big Name on Campus. A title reserved only for GKT’s most famous students, and not something to throw around lightly. “My flatmate shagged the MSA President last night, does that make her a BNOC by proxy?”

Flange - v. The act of speaking to anyone of the opposite gender (or outside of your team, if you’re being strict) before 9pm on a Wednesday night. The ‘Flange’ rule is an attempt to foster team spirit, but usually ends in gin (see “Gin”). “FLAAAAAANGE!!!”

Gin - n. An alcoholic spirit made from the juice of the Juniper berry; v. the act of giving a suitable measure of the stuff to a deserving recipient as a reward/punishment for something good, bad, or ____. Whatever the reason, the recipient must not forget their manners. “Hubert scored a try in the UH Final - GIN HIM!!!”

GKT Bar - n. A semi-regular newsletter which aims to provide GKT with high quality news and satire. This has sadly led to it being ‘banned’ on more than one occasion by KCLSU, and the makeup of the editorial team is GKT’s most tightly kept secret. “Who on earth writes the Bar?! I want to shake their hand/snog them.”

GKT Gazette - n. The oldest hospital Gazette (posh word for magazine) in existence, it was established in 1872. Read it for reviews of campus events, clinical advances, interesting interviews with various BNOCs, and historical information about the GKT hospitals. “I read in the Gazette that snakebite gives you penis cancer...shit!”

Guy’s Bar - v. The act of walking down the stairs of Boland House and opening yourself up to the possibility of ANYTHING happening. “We’ve got £10 between us, a GP visit tomorrow, and it’s only 6pm. Shall we Guy’s Bar?”

Penny - v. The act of throwing a 1p coin into a beverage to coerce the holder into finishing the liquid. If you throw, make sure you know the year on the coin. “So I got her with my penny and Jennifer had to down her mug of tea”

Snakebite - n. That weird purple stuff you see everyone drinking at Guy’s Bar. Comprises 50% lager and 50% cider, with a splash of blackcurrant cordial to mask the disgusting taste. “He handed me the pitcher of snakebite and asked “how many glasses do you want with that?” - what DOES he take me for?!”

This year, MSA Musical Theatre will be performing West Side Story in January 2015. West Side Story is one of the most famous musicals to ever hit the West End and Broadway, and we are immensely proud to

have the opportunity to perform it!

With many roles for guys and girls, we are looking for a cast for the production including both chorus and lead roles. All you need to do to get involved is come to an audition and try out! To prepare, all we ask is that you bring a song to sing, preferably unaccompanied. It can be any song at all -‐ just make sure it shows off your voice. There will also be dance and acting sections to the audition. Don’t let this put you off,

SPORTS AT GKTSports are kind of a big deal around here. Whether you’ve never held a stick and some balls in your life, or you’re training for Rio 2016, there’s a club here for you. So, why should you have a go?FITNESS: While you’ve come to uni as lithe young things with a BMI of 18, this will change. You’ll replace Mother’s cooking with McDonalds, and you don’t want to know how many calories are in a pint of snakebite. Regular training sessions are one way to make sure you don’t return home for Christmas more fattened up than the turkey.SOCIALS: Joining a sports club is the best way to meet people from different year groups and courses. With these new friends, you will embark on weekly adventures on Wednesday nights at Guy’s Bar, where the teams congregate to celebrate/commiserate the results of their matches. As if this weekly debauchery wasn’t enough, there are tours, balls, and AGMs throughout the year.SUPPORT: Sports clubs are a great place to meet older students, who can help advise on such important issues as where to take that hot girl/guy for a first date, or where to rent once the glory days of halls are over. Simply knowing older students helps prepare you for what’s ahead, and this sort of networking happens naturally within a sports club.RIVALRY: We at GKT are proud of our roots. The GKT teams are made up of students from the health schools, and are miles better than the KCL teams (made up of Strandies- arts and humanities students), both on and off the pitch. This ‘friendly’ rivalry is all part of the fun of being a medic.

THE GKT CHRISTMAS

COMEDY REVUE.GKT is notorious, to say the least, for its uniquely crude sense of humour. From Wednesday night banter to unwittingly hilarious lecturers, GKT’s comedy culture is at the heart of this fine institution’s social scene.

The pinnacle of this is one of GKT’s longest standing traditions: the Christmas Comedy Revue. For three nights only the melancholy morose that is the Greenwood theatre is transformed into a wild arena displaying an unadulterated case mix of musical parodies, comedy sketches and, of course, a hell of a lot of nudity. It is the most well attended event in the GKT calendar with an audience of 1500 over the 3 nights. It is not to be missed.

Don’t panic - before you venture into the scary metropolis, take a wander around the our lovely local area.Cultural Curiosities The Shard Having missed the 5 years of constant noise and inconvenience the building work gave us, you won’t have any reason to groan every time you see Europe’s tallest building. It’s probably worth taking a trip up to the viewing floor for its spectacular views over London, but pro tip: you can get almost as good a view for free from the top of Guy’s Tower...

Borough MarketIf your student loan has just come in, and you want something more exciting than another 6” BMT for lunch, then look no further than Borough Market. Or head over later in the day for reductions and freebies-a-plenty.

Southwark CathedralA beautiful building with strong ties to Guy’s and St. Thomas’ hospitals, just a stone’s throw away from campus. All (well, most) GKT medics are guaranteed at least one trip here as it is the venue of our eventual graduation.

The Old Operating TheatreAcross the road from Guy’s Campus, this little museum shows what old-school operating theatres were like (hint: not very nice). Also a good place to learn more about the history of your medical school.

The Tate ModernYou have two choices: wander around and pretend to

understand the squiggles and dots; or mess around in the Turbine Hall and hope a tourist thinks it’s art.

TO BOROUGHThings to DoPalace Superbowl - Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre Ignore how grim the rest of the shopping centre is - the bowling alleys on the top floor are actually pretty good. Mondays and Tuesdays are their student nights - only £2.95 per person per game; and £2.50 drinks. If you join a sports club you’ll inevitably end up here for a social or two.

Tabard Gardens Astroturf - Tabard Gardens Nestled just behind Great Dover Street Apartments, this astroturf pitch costs a bomb to hire on weekdays. However, it is thankfully free on weekends, so all you’ll need is a ball. Studies show that there’s no better way to bond with new friends than booting a football at their head for an hour.

Boris Bikes - The Hop ExchangeThe best way to familiarise yourself with the local area is on a bike. For £2, you can hire a Boris Bike (named after London mayor and Bullingdon Club alumnus Boris Johnson) and cycle to your heart’s content. Make sure you dock it within half an hour to avoid extra fees though.

Stroll down the Southbank - The ThamesThe southern stretch of the river from London Bridge to Westminster Bridge is one of the best walks in London. On a nice day, expect music, street performers, and about 20 human statues. The route also makes for a great pub crawl if you are so inclined.

IMAX Cinema - Waterloo RoundaboutThe largest cinema screen in Great Britain (20x26m) is only a short walk away from campus. It’s a bit pricier than a normal cinema, but it’s worth it. This writer is not ashamed to say he jumped out of his seat on more than one occasion when watching Gravity there.

Café Nawaz - SnowsfieldsNawaz is to GKT what Central Perk is to the cast of Friends - not a week goes by without at least one group of medics ordering ‘the usual’ from the friendly manager Rips. You can bring your own drinks, and the bill usually doesn’t top £10 a head. Truly a magical place.

Vapiano - Southwark StreetThis well-priced Italian restaurant has a nice gimmick to it - when you order your pizza/pasta at the counter, they make it from scratch in front of you. Watch the chef carefully and you can replicate the meal at home for a fraction of the cost.

Spiazzo - St. Thomas’ StreetOrdering lunch here is more stressful than a Friday night shift in A&E, but trust us, it’s worth it. They have a cracking £3.50 student deal - just make sure you’re ready with your money so they don’t eat your head off.

Aquashard - St. Thomas’ StreetLocated on level 31 of The Shard, this restaurant serves “innovative contemporary British cuisine”, alongside some killer cocktails. It’s also conveniently located near Natwest, so you can take out a mortgage before dining.

fish! - Borough MarketSo you’ve finally plucked up the courage to ask out that cute guy/girl in your corridor. You want to impress, but don’t want to spend a fortune. Look no further - this fish restaurant is the plaice to go. Sorry.

Joe’s Kitchen - Marshalsea RoadIf you go to Joe’s for a hungover breakfast on a Saturday morning, you’re bound to see a few familiar faces. Their American style pancakes are something special.

TO BOROUGHBars and PubsThe Britannia - Kipling StreetA small, traditional pub with a mind-boggling selection of whisky. A perfect venue for a dark, quiet evening with a few friends. The drinks aren’t at what you’d call ‘student friendly’ prices though, so bring your card.

The Miller - Snowsfields When the pub is only a 30 second walk from the Greenwood Lecture Theatre, you have no excuse spend the year without a visit. It boasts great food, friendly staff, and some seriously quirky decor - and don’t even get us started on the rolling real ale selection...

Katzenjammers - The Hop Exchange This Bavarian beer hall is maybe the most surreal bar in the area. Their German beers are served in steins, and on Fridays they host live performances from an oom-pah-pah band. We aren’t even joking.

The George - Borough High Street One of our oldest pubs, anyone with an English A-Level will tell you that it was mentioned in the Charles Dickens novel Little Dorrit. One to bring the parents to when they visit. It has a nice garden too.

The Blue Eyed Maid - Borough High Street 40 words is nowhere near adequate to sum up the BEM. Late opening, karaoke 7 nights a week, interesting cocktails, shisha, Indian food, interesting clientele - it’s the perfect storm. A night isn’t a night unless it ends here. Did we mention the karaoke?

The Dover Castle - Great Dover Street This Irish-run slice of heaven is GKT’s favourite pub. Come and have a pint (at a student discount) and play pool; or just watch one of the many sport games on their TVs. Most of our most/least memorable nights have started/ended here.

GKT CHARACTERS:

Thomas Guy made his fortune in the 1670s selling unlicensed bibles, and used the profits to build Guy’s Hospital. His body lies in Guy’s Chapel, but his image lives on in, erm, the car park.

Joseph Lister was the pioneer of modern aseptic technique and sterilisation technique; ‘Listerine’ mouthwash is named after him because he was

so minty fresh.

Astley Cooper was a surgeon and anatomist who had a particular interest in the testes and breasts, something he shares in common with many Guy’s students today.

Cicely Saunders trained first as a nurse, then as a doctor at St. Thomas’. She was the founder of

the modern day hospice movement, and worked to the motto ‘With Love and Steel’

John Keats studied apothecary at Guy’s, then changed his mind and became a poet (maybe the only time this has been a good career move). His statue makes a lovely spot for some gin.

Thomas Hodgkin famously discovered Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but was also the curator of what is now the Gordon Museum. He must have been decent at

it, as the whole building is now named after him.

Lizzie Chamberlain is a GKT institution - been there, done that, got the T-shirt, then left it on someone’s bedroom floor. Supposedly, she’s ‘behaving’ now - we’ll believe it when we see it.

Stuart Paterson is a Scottish pharmacologist by day, and a party animal by night. He never turns down an opportunity to support student activity - if you don’t believe us, ask a Dancing Girl...

Professor Ellis qualified as a doctor in the same year the NHS was founded. It’s *almost* worth mis-

identifying pectoralis minor in dissection just to hear one of his fine selection of put-downs and insults.

Despo Papachristodoulou keeps the first and second years whipped into shape - in the most

literal sense. Prepare yourself for her saucy Greek accent and leather trouser combo.

Stuart Carney arrived with a bang last year, demonstrating that even a Dean can have some fun every now and then. Watching people trying to suck up to him in public is absolutely hilarious.

Juliet Laycock was last year’s MSA President. She is known for her predilection for freshers - so cross your fingers and you might find yourself on

the other end of a ‘Laycocking’...

The Thomas Guy Club is the Sports and Social Club at Guy’s and St.Thomas’ Hospital, and students from King’s College London are very welcome to join at the same rates.Our facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool at Guy’s Hospital - with 3 different level speed lanes, it is ideal for lane swimming.
