2012 GivingMatters.com Capital Campaign Report

Since 2007, GivingMatters.com has produced an annual Capital Campaign Report for our region. The data in this report is compiled from hundreds of responses to a Capital Campaign Survey sent to more than 1,200 nonprofits in Middle Tennessee. The purpose of this report is to:

• Announce new campaigns to local funders. • Give donors an update on funds raised-to-date in ongoing capital campaigns. • Provide information on recently completed campaigns. • Announce preliminary plans for capital campaigns in the next three years. • Note trends over time in Middle Tennessee.

A capital campaign, for the purposes of this report, is defined as a fundraising effort beyond annual operating or program budgets. A capital campaign is focused on the purchase of a permanent asset (land, building, major equipment) or a major renovation project. Endowment campaigns may also be part of capital campaign.

Last year, Middle Tennessee nonprofits self-reported 83 campaigns in process, with an additional 131 anticipated in the next three years. In this year’s report, 83 organizations once again report being involved in current capital campaigns. This is the first year since 2008 that the number of reported capital campaigns has not declined from the prior year.

The number of anticipated campaigns continues to grow steadily year over year. In 2010, 75 organizations reported that they planned to launch a campaign within five years. In 2011’s report, this number rose to 131 nonprofits anticipating campaigns within the next three years alone. This year, an impressive 184 organizations report that they plan to launch a new capital campaign within three years.
