Qualitek-4 (QT4)A quick tour of the software capabilities




What does Qualitek-4 do?

z Designs Taguchi ExperimentsAutomatically : QT4 can design simple of mixed level

experiments when you only describe the factors and

levels.Manually : QT4 allows you to select the array and

assign factors to the columns as you want. Unusedcolumns and Triangular Table information is made readily

available on demand.z Analyzes results with a few Clicks of Mouse




Analysis & Design Capabilities

Normally you would start with DESIGN of your experiment usingQualitek-4. Since, we already have an example, PISTON.Q4W,

experiment designed, let us first see how Qualitek-4 canANALYZE results. Later, we will see how Qualitek-4 capabilitieshelps us DESIGN our own experiments.

Let’s Get Started -1(Install software and explore some capabilities)

Run Qualitek- 4 (QT4) program from your computer and click OK past theRegistration Screen to the experiment configuration screen.

Notice that experiment file PISTON.Q4W is already loadedin memory. If not, OPEN file PISTON.Q4W.




Analysis of ResultsProceed to Review and Analyze Results of PISTON and other exampleexperiments. There are over 50 example experiments of all sizesincluded with the program.

Analysis - Select QC

Before you can proceed with analysis, you need to select the qualitycharacteris tic (QC) for the analysis . T his s election helps Qualitek - 4automatically determine the optimum condition.

Select Smaller is better QC for analysisand click OK to proceed




Analysis - Result ReviewReview results and click on Graph button if you wish to view it.Click OK when done.

Analysis- Main Effects While in the Main Effect screen, click Plot to view plots of Main Ef fect. ClickOK to return to Main Effect screen.

Once you are in thegraphics screen,click

the "<<" or ">>" button

at the bottom of thegraph to display otherfactor plots.




Analysis - Interaction Study

Click on Interaction button, to display interaction plots between any two factors. Selectthe Automatic option if you want QT4 to calculate interaction between all possiblefactors, even though you may not have thought about all the interactions or includedthem in your study.

Select the Automatic option




QT 4 calculates N (N- 1)/2 poss ible pairs of interactions for Nfactors and ranks them by Severity of their presence (SeverityIndex , 0 - 100%). Click OK or Cancel to return to Main Effectscreen and click OK to proceed to ANOVA screen.

Review the list and note the important pairs ofinteraction for future reference.

Analysis - Interaction Study




Analysis -Interaction Plot Y ou can view all pos sible interac tions , one at a time, by double clicking on

the description of the interaction.

Analysis - ANOVA

In ANOVA screen, try POOLING the factor w ith least amount of influence(last column).

Double click on the factor description toPOOL this factor.




Analysis - Modified ANOVAIt is common practice to POOL insignificant factor/interaction in ANOVA. Pooling is

done based on the confidence level.

Click YES to pool this factor and see therevised ANOVA.




You can click on the Bar Graph at the bottom of ANOVA to review the graphical plot of the influence of the factors to the variability of the results.

Click RETURN to go backto the ANOVA screen.




You can also click on the Pie Chart at the bottom of ANOVA toreview the graphical plot of the influence of the factors to thevariability of the results.

Click RETURN to go back to the ANOVA screen.




Analysis – Factor contributions

Stacked Diagram shows how each factor contributes to the improvementestimated.

Click RETURN to go back to Optimum screen




Analysis - Confidence Interval

Click C.I. to calculate confidence interval on the expected performance.

Type in theconfidence level

and clickOK to calculate.




The confidence interval on the expected performance specifies the upper andlower limits within which the MEAN performance of a population samplestested in the optimum condition, is expected to fall. The experiment isconsidered satisfactory when the mean performance falls within this limit.

Review and click OK to return to optimum screen.

Generally, the analysis is completed at this point. For additionalinformation about the expected improvement, you may want to create agraphical plot of the expected performance and predict cost savings.

Analysis -Variation Diagram

Click on Variation button.

Click OK to proceed.




Analysis - Plotting VariationClick on Plot to proceed to display the variation diagram.




Analysis – Variation Reduction PlotThe diagram shows expected performance distribution from designs before and after the

design improvement. The cost savings and capability indices are also estimated based onthe experimental data. Click Return to go back to the optimum screen .




End of Analysis

When at optimum screen, click OK to return tothe main screen . From the file menu, click onOpen and select any other experiment file from

the list of over 50 files (Open POUND.Q4W ifyou are interested in reviewing OEC). Analyzeresults by following steps 3 -8.

Proceed to learn how to design experiments.




Experiment Designs-Input # of Factors

Check boxes for factor type andset the number of factors in each.





Experiment Designs-Confirm Array Selection

Click OK to approve the selection of the array for theexperiment design.




Experiment Designs-Factor Descriptions

Describe the THREE 2-level factors and their levels.Click OK to proceed.




Experiment Designs-Automatic

Describe the 3-level factor and its levels.Click OK to proceed.




Experiment Designs-Factor Assignment


Column 1 of the L-8 array is modified to accommodate the 3-level factor in thisdesign. Other 2-level factors are arbitrarily assigned to the remaining columns.




Experiment Designs-Experiment Title

This screen allow to enter some optional information about the experiment.Click OK to proceed.




Experiment Designs -Automatically Modified Array

Notice that the column 1 of the array is upgraded to a 3-level column usingcolumns 2 & 3. Click OK when finished.




Experiment Designs-Naming and Saving File

Enter a name (8 or less characters) for the file.Then, click OK to proceed.




Experiment Designs-End of Experiment Design

Once the experiment is designed, you will be able to obtain thedescriptions of the trial conditions. Select Trial Condition from the

Condition menu.




Experiment Designs-Trial Descriptions

Review description of one trial at a time by clicking on Next Trial. Click Return when finished.




Experiment Designs- Automatic

Once the experiments are carriedout and the results collected, you will

enter results for analysis. Click on Enter Result to do so.




Experiment Designs- File Update

Upon completion of results entry, you will have the option to update the file, or save it under anew name.

Click OK to update the file.




End of Design

The design of your experiment now is completed.You may now proceed to analyze the resultsfollowing the steps demonstrated earlier with

PISTON.Q4W experiment file. You can also taketime to slowly explore many other options of thesoftware such as Signal-to-Noise ratio analysis,

Loss Function, Overall evaluation Criteria (OEC),Dynamic Characteristics, etc. .




Tips for Getting Started and Screen Capture

To review an example experiment with dynamic characteristics, you will open file DC-AS400.Q4W as shown below.

You can also benefit from tips provided under the Practice Tips menu as shown.




Capability to Calculate PopulationStatistics

This is an additional capability to calculate some popular distribution statistics. Youenter into this screen from Loss/Savings menu.




Process Diagram for DynamicCharacteristics

You will see this process diagram when you proceed to analyze the results of DC-AS400.Q4W experiment by selecting Dynamic Characteristics in Analysis menu.




Five Easy Steps for Problem Solving

An alternative to standard analysis, this is an additional capability to utilize the L-8 arrayexperiment for problem solving applications where the user need not be familiar with thedetails of DOE technique.
