Geography Vocab
Continent- The large pieces of land that cover the earth. There are 7 continents. (exp. North America)
Country- Continents are divided into areas called countries. Each country has it’s own borders and government. (exp. United States)
State- Larger countries have smaller areas called states, but they are still part of the same country. (exp. CA is a state in the country United States)
Cities- Within each country or state there are areas where a large population of people live and work. The symbol is a dot on a map. (exp. Los Angeles is a city)
Landforms- the natural features of the land on the earth’s surface. (exp. Mountains, plains, deserts, valleys, etc.)
Bodies of water- any large amount of water on the earth’s surface. (exp. Oceans, rivers, lakes, etc.)
Natural Resources- anything that is a natural part of the earth and is useful to people. (exp. Water, oil, etc.)
• Climate- The weather of a place including humidity and precipitation (how water falls from the sky).
Fertile land- land with soil (dirt) that is good for growing crops (anything grown from earth to be eaten or used).
