In October 2008, we launched GenNext with a mission to motivate the next

generation of central Ohio professionals.

We knew we could strengthenour community by creating

an environment where community-minded individuals participate inservice projects and educationalopportunities and connect withtheir peers.

And our vision was clear:INSPIRE the next generation ofleaders to become involved instrengthening a community inwhich EVERYONE has the aspirations, resources andopportunities to reach theirfullest potential.

Chances are the reason you’rehere is because you’re lookingfor a way to stretch. To grow. To make a difference in yourcommunity. And that’s what

GenNext is all about. GenNext provides you and other

young professionals with theopportunity to develop leader-ship skills through participationin community volunteer projects,educational activities and net-working events. Events that will

help both the development ofthe community and your owndevelopment. Simply, we areyoung professionals focused onimproving our communitythrough volunteering.

We are GenNext and we areover 500 strong.

GenNext and State FarmInsurance worked with

Community Development forAll People, a non-profit com-munity development organiza-tion dedicated to creating acommunity that welcomes andcares for all people. We helpedwith a drive for their FreeStore, which provides clothingand household items to fami-lies in need.

This event benefittedColumbus Early Learning

Centers, which provide qualityearly learning and care for chil-dren age 6 weeks to kinder-garten. Their mission is to helpchildren develop the physical,social, emotional and cognitiveskills needed for success inkindergarten and first grade.Collectively, the centers servemore than 300 children.

Volunteers helped to rehab sev-eral houses on the near south

side as part of the "HNHF" initia-tive, which seeks to remove barri-ers to the well-being of families byfocusing on affordable housing,health and wellness, education,safe neighborhoods and work-force and economic development.

The partners behind thisinitiative’s success are NationwideChildren’s Hospital,CommunityDevelopment For All People, theCity of Columbus and United Wayof Central Ohio.

GenNext volunteers paintedand worked the grounds at

Franklinton Gardens, which inpartnership with GladdenCommunity House, providesfresh produce at discountprices for Franklinton resi-dents. Gladden CommunityHouse, a settlement houseserving Franklinton and sur-rounding neighborhoods, is aUnited Way affiliated non-prof-it providing education andsupport for individuals, fami-lies and groups. GenNext joined RebuildingTogether to helped low-

income, senior Columbus resi-dents become more energyefficient. Volunteer activitiesincluded replacing light bulbswith energy saving alterna-tives, caulking windows anddoors and providing outdoorlandscaping maintenance.

GenNext volunteers pho-tographed the neighbor-

hood, alleys and buildings toassist with Bronzeville’s revi-talization, a neighborhood of16,000 residents encompass-ing Jefferson to Taylor andBroad to 670. Other volunteerswent to Neighborhood House,where a shipment of suppliesto Haiti was being preparedand loaded.

GenNext joined a community-wide food drive to help

ensure that no one in centralOhio has to face hunger.Benefitting the Mid-OhioFoodbank, the drive was heldin six local neighborhoods tohelp stock the shelves of hun-dreds of food pantries, soupkitchens and emergency shel-ters in our community.

Volunteers came together ata Touch of Gourmet in

Hilliard to prepare meals forthe families of cancer patients.Touch of Gourmet partneredwith a local cancer supportgroup to provide these mealsto families who are coping witha loved one’s recent surgery.

Approximately 45 GenNextmembers were joined by

community leaders, to begindemolition on a vacant housein Olde Towne East that willbecome the Center for Arts andCommunity. The Center willhouse the Transit Arts programand provide residents of theNear East Side a safe place tocongregate. Members scrapedand cleaned walls, ripped outflooring and cleaned a housethat had been empty for morethan eight years.

Eighty-five GenNext mem-bers created an urban gar-

den utilizing more than 100plastic “kiddie” pools at theFaith on 8th location. Theseurban gardens generateapproximately 40,000 poundsof fresh produce for the FaithMission Community Kitchen.GenNext members also partici-pated in a neighborhood clean-up in downtown Columbus.

Nearly 50 volunteers gath-ered at the Godman Guild

for this United Way priorityneighborhood. Projects includ-ed painting at the HuckleberryHouse, renovating a residentialapartment at Vision andVocational Services, plantingseedlings with the UniversityArea Enrichment program andrecycling computers withFreeGeek.

More than 60 GenNext mem-bers helped to prepare gifts

at The Falls at Hayden Run.Educational toys and bookswere donated, gift-wrapped anddelivered to the children of theRosemont Center. Membersenjoyed networking with oneanother while learning about theRosemont Center’s programsand their partnership withUnited Way of Central Ohio.

GenNext volunteers removedgraffiti along with the

Franklinton Area Commission,planted bulbs at COSI, cleanedup abandoned lots with the Franklinton DevelopmentAssociation, cleaned theWestside Childcare Center andrehabilitated a baseball fieldwith Gladden CommunityHouse and a future art galleryfor the Franklinton Arts District.
