Genitourinary System
• Urinary System for Male & Female• Reproductive System for Male
![Page 2: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Purpose of the Urinary System
• Regulate composition of the extracellular fluids of the body
• Removes harmful substances in urine– Nitrogenous wastes– Excess electrolytes
![Page 3: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Purpose of the Urinary System
• Hormones– Kidneys secrete Erythropoietin• Acts on bone marrow to stimulate production of red
blood cells
![Page 4: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Structures of the Urinary System
![Page 5: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
How it works
• Renal Artery– Carries blood that contains waste to the Kidneys
• Renal Vein– Carries clean blood away from Kidneys
• Urine– Formed from the waste left by the blood
![Page 6: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)

How it works
• Nephron– 1 million nephrons– Constant adjustment & regulation of contents of
blood plasma• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-Ub0Df4

How it Works
• Renal Pelvis– Urine is moved to once clean blood leaves Kidney
• Ureters: – 10-12in long, use peristaltic waves to move urine
from Kidney to Bladder
![Page 9: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)

How it works
• Bladder– Temporary reservoir– Rugae-expand as bladder fills
• Urethra– Women 1.5 inches– Men 7-8 inches

![Page 13: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Male Reproductive System
• Purpose– Produce, maintain & transport sperm– Produce the male hormone testosterone
![Page 14: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Anatomy
• Scrotum: external sac– Holds two testes:
secrete testosterone • Each has numerous small
tubes called seminiferous tubules which produce sperm
![Page 15: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Anatomy
• Epididymis: single tightly coiled tube laying over the superior surface of each testis– Stores sperm once it leaves the seminiferous
tubules
![Page 16: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Anatomy
• The Epididymus forms into the Vas Deferens: carries the sperm to the Seminal Vesicle
![Page 17: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
![Page 18: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Anatomy
• The Vas Deferens joins the seminal vesicle– Nutrients to maintain sperm viability– Produces approximately 60% of the seminal fluid
• Ejaculatory Duct: at the end of the seminal vesicle & Vas Deferens
![Page 19: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Anatomy
• Ejaculatory duct passes through the Prostate Gland – Secretes alkaline substance, accounts for about
30% of seminal fluid– Protects sperm from acidity of vagina
![Page 20: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Anatomy
• Bulbourethral Glands: produce alkaline fluid necessary to keep sperm alive
![Page 21: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Anatomy
• During Ejaculation– Sphincter at base of bladder closes• Preventing urine from being expelled with semen• Preventing semen from entering the bladder
![Page 22: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Anatomy
• Penis– Glans penis: enlarged tip of the penis– Urethral orifice (meatus)– Prepuce (foreskin)
![Page 23: Genitourinary System](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022081419/568166b1550346895ddaadb3/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
