Dear church friends,My Bible says, “Do not be alarmed if you are looking for Jesus. YES, He was crucified. He died for all our sins. YES, He has risen!”

This Easter, may you feel the joy of the presence of our Risen Lord. Jesus has risen to bless us. Praise God we are Easter People.

Today I pray that the love of God is resurrected, reborn and renewed in your heart. I pray that you are a blessing to your family and friends. I pray that you have many opportunities to share your faith with others.

Easter Sunday is April 21. Begin now to make plans for you and your family to be in church with us on Easter Sunday.

Happy Easter, Pastor Dennis

WELLNESS NEWS

GREEN SPACEWinter is winding down and spring will bring fresh growth. New beginnings emerge. How important is the blooming and greening of our environment? A city’s green space, such as parks, sports

fields and picnic areas, all play an important role in our physical and mental health. In fact, research says the amount of green space a person is exposed to while they are growing up might impact their mental health as an adult. Something to think about as urban living is becoming more popular. Researchers say the risk of developing schizophrenia to obsessive compulsive disorder decrease by as much as 55 percent when people grew up in areas with higher green space. So, take your children out – enjoy the parks and green spaces – encourage them to go out and play!! It is a fantastic way to connect to God’s creation. And bonus, if the sun is shining – you will soak up some Vitamin D for free!!!

ALLERGY SEASONFor some – springtime means allergy season!! Avoiding triggers are the best defense, but being proactive is a plus also. Eating yogurt has been shown to reduce grass pollen allergies. Garlic cloves may boost the immune system and fight coughs, earaches and bronchitis (who remembers garlic poultices made by their grandmother??). Green tea is another immune system booster.

Watch the bulletin board for news on healthy behaviors and ideas to improve your health.

CHILDREN’S MEDICINEAre you giving your child the right dose of medicine? ALWAYS read the label directions. NEVER give a child a medicine designated for adults. Use ACCURATE measures – do not use kitchen spoons, they vary in size and shapes. It is best to use an oral syringe to administer medicine. ALL medicines should be dosed according to WEIGHT – not age. This advice is just as important for adults. Correct measurements and dosing is crucial for safety and effectiveness.

SHINGRIXMany of us are running out to get the “new shingles shot” – Shingrix. That is because it is 97 percent effective in people 5-69 years old to prevent or minimize shingles. This effectiveness drops a bit after age 70 to about 91 percent effective. The protection is very high for the first four years after the shot is administered. It is a two-part shot. The second dose is given six months after the first. The challenge can be finding a place that is not out of stock!!

MISSIONS AND MINISTRIES

5APRIL 2018

UMW Updatesby CHERYLL HOWELL

Oh these bright, sunny days!!! I’m

ready to run through fields of clover barefooted with my hair streaming behind me. OH!…Reality check. Well it sounds good doesn’t it? Spring has been anticipated by so many people, myself included. I hope everyone has their shades pulled back and is allowing the sunshine to stream into their lives and homes. It is like a new ‘coming’.

The Wednesday dinners have been so yummy! Thank you to all the helpers, cooks and attendees for making it such a welcoming place to visit with people. Are you attending any group meetings afterwards? My studies of Max Lucado’s book “Six Hours One Friday” are very rewarding. It is never too late to join one of the classes being held.

United Methodist Women will be heading to the kitchen in April again. It’s time for “The Easter Eggs!!”  We’ll be making them April 11 and 12 beginning at 9 a.m.  On Sunday, April 14, we will have them for sale between services. They are still only $5 each. Besides mint, peanut butter, vanilla and coconut, we might throw in a surprise. MIGHT!!

Don’t forget our Rummage Sale May 4.  Keep collecting donations for us, please.

Meanwhile…take a walk outside and discover all the neat things you’ve missed for five months!

Misson Committee Updatesby DAVE NANCE

It is a blessing to serve with a congregation that has a strong heart for missions. Thank you and praise God for all the opportunities He provides for and through us. Food for Our Children: A donation was provided for the immediate need at Neil Armstrong Elementary through the end of the school year. Thank you! The committee has been gaining knowledge of the hunger our children face. With this knowledge and associated contacts we are also developing plans for addressing the needs. We have confirmed that the focus needs to be on the elementary schools. We are planning a food drive for May 5. Please watch for details as they become available over the next few weeks. We will be asking for food and volunteers to assist. Banquets: The Committee will continue a plan that started last year. We will be announcing opportunities where banquet attendance costs for anyone in our congregation will be matched through the committee discretionary funds, as allowed. This seemed to help fill tables at the Churches in Mission banquet last year. Please keep watch and spread the word when these opportunities become available. These will likely be short notice opportunities. Mission Videos: We are in the process of making very short mission introduction videos. These will be available in the coming months and posted on our wonderful new website. Mission Fair: We are considering a mission fair this year. Are you involved in a mission that could use some help? Please let us know.

PRAYER and STEPHEN MINISTRY

Celebrate Godby CATHY MOSIER

How can we keep Christmas well during the month of April as we journey to Good Friday and Easter Sunday? As the Ghost of Christmas Present instructs,

“May we go forth and know Our Loving Father GOD, His Son Our Lord Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit Comforter better!” It’s about exactly HOW you can go forth and know Our Triune GOD better. It’s about meeting HIM through HIS Holy Word. It’s about inviting HIM into your life each morning.I found this prayer attached to my momma’s dresser mirror…the 3x5 card is tattered and yellowed… evidence that it was much read…and so now it’s attached to my mirror as a reminder to invite GOD in!As we journey along the road to the cross, I was struck by the outline of Celebration I found in Leviticus 23. It’s a straight forward plan to celebrate GOD in the upcoming days…

3 “There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a day of Sabbath rest.” Do you have a rest day dedicated to GOD?5 “The Lord’s Passover begins at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month.” Remember we Celebrate the fact that the Angel of Death Passes Over US! GOD’s GRACE gives us NOT what we deserve MERCIFULLY what we DON’T deserve which is His LOVE.9 “When you enter the land I am going to give you and you reap its harvest, bring to the priest a sheaf of the first grain you harvest.” – FIRST FRUITS – we give GOD what already belongs to HIM for He owns the cattle on a thousand hills (and just so you know HE owns the hills too)24 “…a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts.” Numbers 10:9-10 gives us two reasons to sound the trumpets. 9 “When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you, sound a blast on the trumpets. Then you will be remembered by the Lord your God and rescued from your enemies. 10 Also at your times of rejoicing – your appointed festivals and New Moon feasts – you are to sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the Lord your God.” – WOW!! GOD will rescue us! Have you sounded the trumpet in your current situation??28 “…the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God” – and we are once more At One with GOD41 “Celebrate this as a festival to the Lord for seven days each year. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come; celebrate” – Feast of Tabernacles closes this entire chapter of Celebration to GOD, it closes this time of Gratitude and Remembrance of GOD’s Grace poured out on us.

As always if either the Prayer Team or Stephen Ministry Team may aid you on your journey to know HIM better we are as close as an email, a phone call a visit in the hall.

In Christ’s service, Cathy Mosier Prayer Team/Stephen Ministry Team

LORD for such a day as this my lamp of faith has been lit. Let me see my full responsibility to opportunity IN THIS PLACE. Let me be eager to run the full course even though the finish line beckons me toward freedom and relaxation. Hold me close, for YOU know I am more a learner than a teacher, more of a follower than a leader.I stand at the door and knock – For stillness within to make me a

patient listener. For outpouring LOVE to share in the fellowship. For freshness in my task to give worthy service. For patience without because of JOY within. Take the eager spirit which dwells in this tired body and use it hour by hour.

Amen

FUMC hosts “Hoosier Interfaith Power & Light” Workshopby CURT SIDENER

Mooresville’s St. Thomas More, First Christian, and First United Methodist churches met in February at FUMC to plan how to save their congregations utility dollars.

This workshop was led by the Hoosier chapter of “Interfaith Power & Light” which is a national organization to assist churches. This was a four-hour seminar and we enjoyed a soup and sandwich lunch provided by “The House” in Mooresville.

One might say we were reacquainted to the obvious, but being in the context of a group we saw how easily this is over looked and taken for granted. Expenses and costs that break a pattern can point to problems that if caught in a timely fashion will save money in the long term. This works in the home as well as the church. Ray Wilson, H-IPL presenter, told us of a H-IPL service that monitors water, gas and electricity for a consumer and accounts for changes in outdoor temperature differences (Energy Stewards). We heard several testimonies about Indianapolis churches finding major cost drivers this way.

A painful reality Ray pointed out to us was, “Heat, cool and light people, not empty spaces”. Today’s thermostats will allow us to turn back temperature at night and return back to comfortable temperatures when people are present. LED light bulbs offer a large savings. Have we been looking for holes in our thermal barriers? Do doors/windows close tight? Ray had an inexpensive thermal imaging attachment for his phone that could tell where cool spots exist. Properly maintained equipment will run efficiently. Do we actually need to run water coolers 24/7 for the few times it’s used Sunday? What should we do about heating water all week just to have warm water (after five minutes) for washing hands on Sunday? Ray pointed out there are portable plug-in instruments that could measure consumption and help make decisions. Ray suggested that the church could be a tremendous asset to it congregants by purchasing and loaning them to the individual families for their benefit.

I think David Nance said it best, “Saving money on utilities should make more money available for Missions.”

Here and Now Class, April and Mayby DAVE NANCE

The Here and Now class meets Sunday mornings in the parlor on the same schedule as second service.

For Lent the class is currently studying, “Final Words From The Cross”. This is a six-chapter study from Pastor Adam Hamilton. We will complete that study on Palm Sunday. Books are available, but not required as each chapter also has a 12-minute sermon video seen at the beginning of the class. Please feel free to join us any time.

In January we started a study from Pastor Adam Hamilton, “Moses, In the Footsteps of the Reluctant Prophet.” The weather and quality of discussion slowed our progress, so we took a break to complete the Lenten study during Lent. We will resume the Moses study on April 28 with a quick recap of the first two chapters and then proceed through the study in May. This is excellent reading and especially for anyone interested in ancient Egypt. It is amazing how those events add depth to our Christian experience today – Here and Now.

This is a class for busy people. Each class is a stand-alone study and discussion. The video allows visitors, as well as regular attendees, the opportunity to join in the discussion without reading the book. The book just provides depth. Please feel free to stop by for a visit to the Here and Now class anytime.

Intelligent Lives In April, SHINE Ministry will be showing the film “Intelligent Lives” at First United Methodist. This is a catalyst to transform the label of intellectual disability from a life sentence of isolation into a life of possibility for the most systematically segregated people in America. It is a great film that should be seen by people with disabilities and their loved ones, but even more by everyone else. Please join us on Friday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. Here is a link to the film’s trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7qEJFpMWNk
