UP TO 300 REFUGEES HAVE drowned at sea attempting to get into Europe in the first

month of 2016 alone. This has to stop. That people fleeing war and persecution should have to take such huge risks to survive is unacceptable.

Cameron has failed to provide any serious help to these people—rejecting calls to take in 3,000 refugee children, currently in Europe.

Trade unionists and campaigners have been doing what they can to fill the gap that lack of government aid is leaving. Solidarity delegations to the Calais camp, “the jungle” over the last few months have been doing crucial work and raising the political profile. These delegations deserve everyone’s support.

It’s disgusting that when Jeremy Corbyn visited the Calais and Dunkirk camps last week, Cameron described him as spending time with “a bunch of migrants”.

But this is what we have come to expect from Cameron—the New Year has seen the Tories really start to ratchet up racism. And we need to call it that because that’s what this is. The 19 March Stand Up to Racism demonstrations in London, Glasgow and Cardiff will be a crucial rebuttal to this.

DeportedWhen Cameron targeted Muslim women last week, saying that they needed to learn a decent standard of English or face being deported he was pushing this same divide and rule agenda. Cameron has made a total cut to funding English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes of £25 million.

Britain has been built on waves of immigration. Our NHS would not exist at all if people from all over the world were doing the jobs that keep it ticking.

The Tories fear a united fight back against their rotten policies. The exposure of the scandal that Google the Tories have done a deal with the tech company Google allowing them to pay token £130 million taxes is just one example of where their interests lie. Even media baron Rupert Murdoch is annoyed

about it!Cameron wants us to believe that

failings in our health service and education system, cuts to welfare and lack of social housing provision is due to an influx of migrants into the country.

PowerThis government is all about looking after their rich friends, and it’s their policies that are making our lives worse.

They aren’t interested in helping people in need, whether that’s refugees, flood victims or the disabled.

We have to get organised to turn the tide on the Tories. The 6 million people who are currently members of trade unions are the force in society that has the potential power to stop them.

This is something that the Tories know

all too well, and that’s why they are trying to drive through their Trade Union Bill. It’s a whole raft of further anti-union laws designed to severely curtail our ability to resist austerity.

The Tories also attempted to use the law to demobilise the recent junior doctors’ strike, essentially describing public support for the strike as “secondary action”.

The TUC’s “Heartunions” week of action (8-14 February) is a chance to build resistance to the Trade Union Bill. See: www.heartunions.org

Every workplace and union branch should do everything they can to support the “Big Workplace Meeting” on 9 February and the day of action on Thursday 11 February.

But the best way to beat the anti-union laws is to strike, and that’s another reason why the junior doctors’ strike on Wednesday 10 February, in England, is so important.

Their fight against the imposition of a new contract is a battle to save the NHS. Anyone who wants to fight for the future of the health service, should swell their picket lines on Wednesday.
