Following the Civil War Robert E. Lee was offered a very lucrative position because of his popularity and fame. He wisely looked beyond the opportu-nity and saw it as a compromise of his principles and ethics. Lee in turn took a position which paid only a fraction of the previous offer. Guarding his principles and ethics was worth more to him than silver or gold.

In recent days many of our politicians, judges and justices have cowered to the pressure of special interest groups. Primarily, the pressure has come from immoral and amoral groups that are promot-ing a destructive and degener-ate agenda. We thank God for those who stand firm.

These same “workers of iniqui-ty” are applying pressure which is being felt from the pulpit to the pew to the home. It is fairly common to hear things such as; “If you say that you might get sued!” “If you call that a sin, people will leave your church!” “If your church takes a public stand on that you’ll have the media after you!” “If you teach that we’ll see your name in the editorials of the paper!” “If you correct that in your church the people in town will hear about it and label you as a fanatic!”

God’s people have always been pres-sured to compromise from God given principles. Joseph was tempted to compromise his morality. Moses was tempted to compromise and only par-tially obey God’s directive to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. Daniel, Jesus, John the Baptist, Martin Luther, John Knox and others.

The pressure is mounting. Pastors and Bible teachers feel a self imposed pres-sure to avoid certain topics because it will most certainly offend, correct, or convict a close friend or prominent member of the church. There are two easy solutions, neither of which are biblical. One approach is the “bull in the china closet” method. The at-titude, gestures, and overall demeanor of the speaker may be more offensive than the truth being presented. As someone recently told me, “I don’t

from the Editor, Stan Bunch

mind hearing hellfire and brimstone but it bothers me when the preach-ers appears to be happy about preach-ing it and saying that folks are going there!” The other method is to be so general and broad in our approach that even the speaker is unsure of what he means. Minor issues can become major ones if not dealt with firmly and lovingly.

The Apostle Paul spoke directly and pointedly to the Corinthians “I speak to you as babies and carnal people.” Would that not be offensive? Would 1 Corinthians 6:9 not be offensive and

convicting? “Know ye not that the un-righteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither forni-cators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, He really cuts it straight with the Ga-latians in 5:19... Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, las-civiousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, se-

ditions, heresies, envyings, mur-ders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Yes, Paul spoke very straight and very boldly. Yet, his state-ment to the Romans concerning his passion and burden for lost Israel (and others) tempered the truth that he boldly proclaimed and rendered such clear, point-ed and convicting writing as ac-ceptable and even appreciated.

Romans 9:3... For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh…

Yes, we live in a day when we too are tempted and pressured to cower down and ignore or very gently pass over dif-ficult yet extremely important issues. May God give us grace, power and boldness to skillfully and unasham-edly present the truth from a loving heart that is contrite, broken and com-passionate toward the weak Christian as well as the lost sinner.

Not Cracking Under Pressure

from the Missions Director, Frank Webster

In 2002, in our first year as a married cou-ple, Brooke and I began considering dif-ferent possibilities of ministry. We were young and inexperienced but knew that we wanted to serve Him with our lives. As we began studying some of the options available to us, we noticed one social phe-nomenon that was transforming Spanish society.

Within a span of a few years, Spain had gone from a country of emigration to one of immigration. Between 2000 and 2008, Spain experienced an immigration boom, going from 1 million foreigners in 2000 to over 5.5 million in 2009. In fact, in this period, Spain was the second largest re-cipient of immigrants in the OECD (Or-ganization for Economic Co-operation and Development), surpassed only by the much larger United States (Spain is roughly the size of Texas). As we studied what was taking place in this country we felt that the church in Spain had an op-portunity to serve as a visible example of the Kingdom of Heaven, demonstrating a model of social integration as it grew in unity within a context of diversity. Not only this, we envisioned these immigrants as future Spaniards reaching others for Christ in Spain, Europe and beyond.

During these last 12 years in Madrid, Spain we have witnessed moments of growth and have experienced the realities of His Kingdom at work. On the other hand, we have also encountered the deep darkness of this world. Nevertheless, we have been privileged to work with people from more than 30 countries. Some

of them have returned to their coun-try of origin. Evgeni and Maya, for exam-ple, returned to Bulgaria to serve as youth pastors at a church in their town of birth. Others, such as Luz (director of the social outreach program) or Jhon Fredy (pastor of the Villalba church) have continued to dedicate their lives to His work in Spain.

We certainly are not in control of all the variables that affect our lives but we take comfort in resting in the arms of the One who will write the final chapter of our ex-istence. Recent events have led us to be even more mindful of the implications of spending eternity in His presence. All the material elements that surround us will pass away but His loves endures forever. As citizens of Heaven we are strangers in this present earth and realize that we haven’t yet arrived home. Our example is Jesus Christ, who emigrated to Earth to save us from sin and the powers of evil.

In the last decade we have been able to ob-serve how the love of Christ brings people from different cultural, socio-economic and linguistic backgrounds in order to create one unified body. He has liberated us from our past and has provided us with hope for the future! It is encouraging to look back and see His work in the lives of brothers and sisters that serve in different countries through a variety of capacities. We are united in Him and He is indeed Lord of all!

“For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever” (Matthew 6:13).

uild My Church

The Stonebridge church in Troy, MO is making some improvements to their parking areas and to the drive into the church. They also plan to finish

the Sanctuary bathrooms this Fall. The group there has really pulled together and has a clear plan for the future.

The Provow Family is in Bulgaria! They are already involved in connecting to people in their neighborhood as well as with those inthe Svistov church.

First Day FWB in Cabool, MO continues to grow. They had their 1st Anniversary Celebration with over 150 in attendance for the outside event. The tent didn’t hold everyone but everyone did get to enjoy the BBQ after the Worship Service.

VBS is common to most places in MO, however, in many other places it isn’t. In Castle Rock, CO the Truth FWB Church is the only church offering “Free” VBS foranyone to attend. In Greensburg and Erie several are attending VBS style events for the first time. One adult asked in Pennsylvania, “What does the church charge to attend the Sunday Worship services?” Of course the answer is, Salvation is free and so is attending our church.

A group from Farmington 1st ministered at the Gwenn Hendrix Hispanic Semi-nary in Bartlesville, OK. The Youth Ministries group,S.P.I.N., worked hard in the heat of August to help the school by painting several rooms, doing minor repairs and striping the parking lot.

Several from the Union Grove FWB Church in Norwood traveled to Osage Beach for the second year in a row to do a VBS for Clear Point. This

group does a great job with VBS and several from Clear Point were available to be involved as well. At least 40 school-agers from the Osage Beach area attended the event.

The Macedonia FWB Church of Purdy sent 4 adults to Greensburg, PA to help with their VBS style event. The team at Keystone reports they were fun, hard working and would be welcome back anytime!

Black Oak FWB Church in Marshfield held a baptism service on May 24th. Pictured are, Pastor Jack Day, Dave Magoon, Harold Magoon, and Ruston Long in the front. It was a great day in the Lord. Dave, at 90 was glad that the water was warm and was ready to get in. It’s never to late to draw close to the Lord and seek His will. ~Bill Young-Deacon

Jack and Freda Mae Day celebrated their 60th Wedding Anni-versary at Webco Man-or on May 23rd. Freda was in good spirits that day believing she and Jack were getting mar-ried. The next day at

church Jack shared that Freda told him that now that they were married he could get a bed out there by her. If only the young people of today thought in those lines. Even now with Alzheimer’s, Freda still knows what’s right and wrong having had a good Christian upbringing. She is still a lot of fun to be with. Stop by and see her and maybe Jack will be there visiting.

Black Oak NewsPastor Vernon Maggart baptized six students on July 12, 2015. We praise the Lord for these young people. We pray they will be a light for Jesus in this dark world that we live in.

In September Rev. Vernon Maggart celebrated fifty years as a FWB pastor. Vernon was saved while in his teens at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Kirksville, MO. Later at Camp Niangua, he yielded to the call to preach

the gospel. Rev. Lester Jones was pastor of the church in Kirksville at that time.

Fifty Years In Ministry

Vernon relates that it was his mother who strongly insisted that he attend church with her. It wasn’t long after being subjected to the Gospel that he was saved. He also relates that an incentive to go to church in those days was not only because it was the right thing to do, but he got to sit by a beautiful country girl named Neta McElhinney whom he dated all through high school. Three months after their high school graduation they were united in marriage at the First Free Will Baptist church in Kirksville. Rev. Woodrow Matthews performed the ceremony. They were both only eighteen years of age but Vernon laughingly says they were more mature than most teens.

A year later in the fall of 1959, they loaded all their possessions in a 1951 Ford and headed to Nashville, TN where Vernon enrolled at the Free Will Baptist Bible College (now Welch College) to prepare for the ministry. Neta worked full time at Baptist Hospital to put Vernon through college. He graduated in the class of 1965 and in the fall of 1965 accepted the call to pastor the Calvary FWB church in Columbus, GA where he was ordained in September of that same year. While at Calvary, he led the church in the construction of a new auditorium.

After serving in Georgia for three years, the Maggarts returned to Missouri where Vernon pastored a small mission church in St. Joseph for four years. In the fall of 1972, the mission merged with the Freeman Chapel FWB Church located nine miles east of St. Joseph. He has pastored Freeman Chapel for forty-three years and has led the church in two building programs. Rev. Maggart says he has no plans to retire and plans to continue pastoring as long as his health permits.

The Maggarts have four children, ten grandchildren and three greats. Their sons, Dave and Danny, reside in St. Joseph and both are deacons at Freeman Chapel. They are a great help and blessing to their father. One daughter, Debbie Robertson lives in Birming-ham, AL while her sister, Dana Slusser, lives in Bloomsburg, PA. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

New converts & New MembersClear teaching and well communicated expectations for church membership are important for new believers. The Good News FWB Church in Chitre, Panama recently finished another new members class with over 20 partici-pants. These new believers and members are learning the importance of a daily walk with God, prayer and fasting, Christian service, missions, tithing and regular attendance. Many of these believers are involved in helping in the new churches that the Good News church is starting. This congrega-tion is mothering one new mission church and has recently started another preaching point.

Wolf Creek Goes to Grand Rapids

The Wolf Creek Church was very well represented in Grand Rapids. Forty nine “Wolf Creekers” juggled rehearsal times, competition presentations, business sessions, meal times, seminars and worship services. Missouri Free Will Baptists and the Missouri Youth Ministries Board would like to express our thanks and appreciation to Wolf Creek all of our churches who participated in the National Convention and NYC Competition. Each year 12-17 Missouri FWB churches have students who participate in SCM Competition. With 160 FWB churches registered in our State As-sociation, that is less than 12% participation. Motivating young people to memorize scripture, use their talents, develop their gifts, and be creative in their service to God is an eternal investment.

The National Convention will be held in Kansas City in July 2016. It would be great if we could see the number of participating churches in CTS Competition increase. Congratulations to the Missouri churches and students represented at NYC Competition: Verdella, Wolf Creek, Grace, Thayer,

Calvary Fellowship, Copper Mines, Hazel Creek, Mountain Grove First and Hartville.

“Our generation has been programmed to pursue happiness, wholeness, affirmation, and cures for our hurt feelings and dam-aged psyches. But God is not as interested in these ends as we are. He is more com-mitted to making us holy than making us happy. And there is only one pathway to holiness—one road to genuine revival—and that is the pathway of humility or bro-kenness.” Nancy Leigh DeMoss

James 4:4

Camp Niangua-Bruce Dede Moore

Page 10 / GEM Magazine / September-October, 2015

Camp Niangua 2015 season is now divine history. Only God knows the future results. On behalf of the camp board, THANK YOU to all who helped make this a camp for God's glory. Here are some of the results of God's working: Sal-vations 33; Rededications 40; Called to service 28. This is what camp is all about. Sure, we want the kids to have a good time but the spiritual aspect of camp must always dominate what we do there. Other information of interest: Offering for the Show Me Plan for missions, $ 2930.65; Camp debt, $228,000 (We are making payments on schedule); Pool fund, $32,039.35 as of the end of June 2015. It is projected that the pool will cost around $150,000. It would be great if the funds came in real soon and the new pool could be used next camping season. Would your church consider helping us with this project? One issue that concerns us is the number of church-es that send their young folks to camp. Teen camps; 34 churches, Preteen camps; 42 churches. When we know that there are 160 Free Will Baptist Churches in MO, the small number of participating churches concerns us as a board and should concern all of us.

The Youth Camp board represents all of our church-es. We as Free Will Baptist churches must work to-gether and support the biblical position that we all hold dear.

Openbible.info has a list of 73 passages which expressed the reader’s appreciation for their pastor. Here we will only include the top ten which received the most votes. (Emphasis added)

Hebrews 13:17... Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

Jeremiah 3:15... And I (the Lord) will give you pastors ac-cording to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowl-edge and understanding.

1 Thess 5:12-13... And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among your-selves.

1Ti 5:17... Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, (double wages) especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

Rom 10:14... How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

2 Tim 4:2... Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

1 Thess 1:1-10... Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Fa-ther and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. We give thanks to God always for you all, making men-tion of you in our prayers; Remembering without ceas-ing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God. For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assur-ance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost so that ye were ensamples to

all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedo-nia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing. For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

1 Cor. 9:14... Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

1 Thess 1:3... Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;

Ephesians 4:11... And he gave (to the church) some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

Thirty Days of Appreciation

Use an October calendar to schedule volun-teers for a month-long schedule of surprise treats. Each day of the month, the pastor will receive a surprise token of appreciation from a church member, committee or group within the church. The tributes can vary widely. Some ideas include: a balloon delivery, a shoe shine, an apple pie, or a gift certificate. After a whole month of pleasant surprises, won't your pastor feel appreciated?

And won't God be honored by your acts of love for His servant? Don't forget to include a sincere note with specific reasons you appreciate the minister's spiritual leadership, dedication, time and commitment.

Honor God by honoring His servants, with a thoughtful, personalized encouragement that fits your unique church and pastor. (Lifeway.com)

Reformation Day 2015THE HOLY SCRIPTURES… “they are a sufficient and infallible rule and guide to salvation and all Christian worship and service; the Word of God, without error in all matters upon which it speaks.”

The above statement hangs on the wall behind my desk in the MOFWB State Office. I want to con-stantly be reminded that the Bible is authoritative, inspired and sufficient, in every age.

In his booklet Free Will Baptists and the Sufficiency of Scripture, Dr. Matt Pinson states, “The doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture is one of the hall-marks of the Protestant Reformation. Encapsulated in the Reformation phrase sola Scriptura (Latin for "Scripture alone"), the doctrine holds that Scrip-ture alone is the church's authority for faith and practice. Thus the church must have scriptural war-rant for its doctrines and practices.”

Free Will Baptists are very clear about our position on the validity of the Bible. Our treatise states foun-dationally in the first chapter regarding The Holy Scriptures; “These are the Old and the New Tes-taments; they were written by holy men, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and are God’s revealed word to man. They are a sufficient and infallible rule and guide to salvation and all Christian worship and service. Since the Bible is the Word of God, it is without error in all matters upon which it speaks, whether history, geography, matters relating to sci-ence or any other subject.”

I feel confident in saying that among Free Will Bap-tists there is not one minister or deacon who would disagree with the plenary verbal inspiration of the Bible. There are no theological liberals among our clergy nor educators.

There is a weakness within us however. While we hold to a correct view of inspiration, we must go a step further and consider the Holy Bible to be a suf-ficient and infallible rule and guide for life’s deci-sions and belief system. God’s word has something to say regarding business principles for Christians. It speaks about how ladies are to minister in the local church. It tells us how to train children and youth. There is ample guidance given to pastoral

ethics, correction, church discipline, morality, mar-riage, sexuality, honesty, work ethic and helping the poor without enabling. Our tendency is to resort primarily to the blog of some popular mega church leader, a recent best seller, or more commonly, our own fleshly wisdom. We would be wise to dig out guidance and truth from God’s word. Doing this requires time and hard work.

One of the five primary pillars of the Protestant Reformation was “Sola Scriptura.” In our day that would mean that while tradition, intellectualism, human wisdom and psychology may have their place in society and ecclesiastical life and order, they should never be elevated in importance or devotion to the level of Holy Writ. God’s Word is authoritative and sufficient to lead us in decision making and seeking God’s plan for our life, minis-try, and church.

The western culture is aggressively attacking those who would hold to the authority of the Bible re-garding morality, parenting, marriage and sexual-ity, just to name a few areas. Just as the reform-ers of past centuries stood firm during testing and persecution, we who take the name of Christ must dare to respectfully stand boldly, confidently and convincingly upon the unchanging Word of God.

“The Word of God is alive….” it is relevant and applicable to life in this day, and those to come.

eStudent Ministry is tough. As a young Youth Pastor I am constantly looking to improve our youth group. In my search I tried creating more youth outings, spending more time investing in students outside of church, and really being intentional on making services more impact-ful. While all these ideas are worthwhile and important none of these had the lasting impact I was looking for. In my search for something that would change our culture I asked the guidance of some older men. One of these men encouraged me to emphasize prayer. My first reaction was one of dismissal. I thought, “Well duh, we open in prayer and close in prayer.” After being further convicted I began to really emphasize prayer. We started by hav-

Youth Ministries Board ing our students participate in a “Concert of Prayer.” It was a memorable time for our students and one that laid the foundation. Next, we started spending 15-20 minute opening up services with small group prayer. I have been amazed by how God has blessed our youth group. Stu-dents that were disengaged have now become leaders. Students that were casual Christians have answered the call to preach. If you are in search for how to effectively minister to your youth group let me encourage you to lead your students in intentional prayer. My prayer is that God will move and strengthen your group.

Father,We thank you for the opportunity to begin this new school year, and we ask that you bless the students, faculty, and student families that make our school a great place. SOLD! That is what's on the realtor's sign as you pass by the West End property in case you haven't heard, it's official; the campus is sold. The sale closing took place on Friday, June 19. The buildings on West End (except Welch Library, which was not sold) have already come down in preparation for new construction by the de-veloper. College operations have been consolidated into the remaining buildings.

On July 14th close to 350 gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Welch College’s Gallatin campus. The college will officially move either in September of 2016 or January of 2017. “We are looking forward to our transition to the new campus. Thank you for your support and prayers in this endeavor.”

This move has never been about buildings, but providing our students the best learning environment possible, as we train leaders to serve Christ, His Church, and His world through biblical thought and life.

A special website has been set up in order for you to see drawings of the buildings and campus design, and follow the project: www.buildingonthelegacy.com. You can sign up for email updates as well. In the near future there will be a live broadcast from the construction site on the website as well. Please encourage family and friends to visit the website.

Your support makes a difference in the lives of Welch College students and the world. Thank-you! Please continue to pray for the college and the students.

Do you like to read prayers? Do you need a little help to expand your prayer experience a bit? “The Valley of Vision” is an excellent collection of inspiring Puritan Prayers which can help us get out of the rut of routine praying.

Fasting and Prayer: Recently a pastor came to me and said that he would be accepting the challenge fast and pray on a regular basis. May God inspire more of us to accept the challenge.

An exercise tip: Put your shoes and exercise clothing or equipment out in a visible place prior to going to bed at night. Drink ½ your body’s weight in ounces of water each day. 180 lbs = 90 ounces of water

Children’s Discipleship: During a recent visit with a group of FWB teens each one had a similar testimony. “I came to Christ as a child but grew indifferent and fell away as an adolescent.” Are you providing serious discipleship training for adolescents and teens who grow up in your church? Call MOFWB if you need help.

D6 2nd Generation Literature is available from Randall House Publications. With this literature each age group is studying the same passages and themes which provides a basis for interaction and dialogue in the home. D6 stands for Deuteronomy 6, where we are told to teach precepts and truth to our children in the home. Randall House is helping us do this through the D6 material.
