“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

Jimmy B.

“the fun starts here”…. 4

November 2011

That‘s a question that I have thought about

a lot lately.

It‘s hard to argue, that all of us who call

ourselves ―gearheads, hot rodders,

motorheads, etc.‖ are focused on particular

car, or make of car or style of build.

I would say a lot of us are actually ―laser

focused‖ in some cases. We get fixated on a

particular car and learn as much about it as we

can. We know all the different variations of

builds, option combo‘s, the real rare ones and

so on. Some of us can answer just about any

question there is on our favorite ride.

Then there is the ―period

correct‖ crowd. They know exactly

the way a car should be built for

a particular timeframe or genre‘ as

they say. This group goes out of

their way to ensure the car is built

Just like they did in the ―old days‖.

40‘s, 50‘s, 60‘s..they have it down.

Now don‘t get me wrong, I

am not saying there is anything

wrong with all this. This is what

makes our sport, hobby, passion

what it is today. It is what makes it

fun.

There‘s the folks who

subscribe to the theory that in

order to have fun at a car show or

cruise nite, you have to have your ―hot rod‖ or

it‘s no fun. This bunch of folks wont go to an

event without their car / hot rod.

Now I will get on some shaky ground,

but that‘s ok. Do you build or buy your ride?

The folks that wheel and deal are having a

blast driving a cool car..their cool car. See that

smile on their face…you cant wipe it off while

they are cruising around or wiping their car

down at a show or cruise nite or even in their

driveway..

Now the ―car builders‖ the just don‘t

understand how anyone could ―buy a hot

rod‖!!!

They would never be caught driving a ―bought

hot rod‖. For some of these folks, they actually

enjoy building the car more than driving it.

Usually they sell it shortly after its complete, so

they can start the next project.

NEWS FLASH!! If you fit in anyone of

these ―slots‖ you‘re ok!! This is what makes Hot

Rodding…Hot Rodding. Variety keeps it going

and doesn‘t let it get boring.

Now…back to the original question. Is it

really about the cars??

My opinion is no it‘s not about the cars…

it‘s always been about the people.

We…I am raising my hand up,

make this sport, hobby, lifestyle

fun.

The car is nothing without the

people in it.

When you are working on your

car, eventually you will ―phone a

friend‖ to come help you because

you need that 3rd hand. You will

bounce idea‘s off your ―buds‖ on

what you think your going to do to

see what they think. You are

looking for their input….it‘s

important to you.

Most folks go to cruise nites or

car shows with a few other folks.

Sometimes it‘s a car club going

together. Sometimes you are riding with your

friend to an event because your ride isn't

running yet or you just don‘t have one. Maybe

you are going yourself, just to check out the

cool cars and take some pictures for yourself.

The main thing is, you are having fun with

cars. You have that big ―sh#t eating‖ grin on

your face because your digging the fumes from

some 110 octane fuel in a gas tank.

Take a look at the picture here. Ol‘ BB &

GW are checking out the awards deal at a local

show. Can you tell which one had his ride there

and which came to have fun with his friend?

Doesn‘t matter does it……

Is it really about the cars???

ROAD RUMBLINGS… By Jimmy B

6 And remember to tell em’ ya saw it in the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE cause THE FUN STARTS HERE!!

November 2011

Check out one of the coolest shows around on Nov. 5 & 6th. The 2011 Kris Kringle Invitational Car Show will take place at the Williamson County AgExpo Center in Franklin TN. Tom Akers has worked all year to pull together a great collection of cool rides. The GEARHEAD GAZZETTE will be in attendance all weekend long, shooting pic’s for an upcoming issue. Stop by the HOT RODS & THREADS Full Service Hot Rod Shop booth and say hey to Jimmy B!

CONGRATULATIONS to HOT RODS & THREADS Full Service Hot Rod Shop. In October they celebrated their 6th Anniversary of building Cool Cars & Trucks “in the Grove”… College Grove TN.

Starting this month, we have added a special feature to the Gazzette. Mid-South Hot Rodding Icon, Ed “Mr Holley” Woodard has started writing about how hot rodding got started in the Mid-South. Join the trip back in time to learn about how it was really being done, by someone who was there and documented all the cool stuff with lots and lots of pictures.

Some sad news!! Just about everyone knows Stroker McGurk, the lovable cartoon character from the early days of HOT ROD and Rod & Custom magazine's Tom Medley who helped shape Rod & Custom , HOT ROD and created Stroker McGurk suffered a devastating fire at his

home recently. Burbank Firefighters had their hands

full when they arrived on scene at 3316 W. Verdugo

Avenue, Thursday afternoon as they had a garage well

involved with fire. A 91 year-old occupant was knocked

to the ground after attempting to start the car and it

backfired and caught fire. Firefighters made a quick

knock down but were unable to save the garage or any

of it's contents which included a 1940 Ford Coupe and

a mobile trailer sitting near the garage.

Firefighter/Paramedics treated the resident, Tom

Medley, the owner of both the home and of the car,

who was knocked to the ground after the fire started.

Medley declined any further medical treatment.

Burbank Fire sent three engines, two truck companies,

a paramedic unit and Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief

Tom Lenahan. The damage was listed at $30,000 to

the garage and $60,000 to it's contents with no injuries

to firefighters and the cause is being listed as an

accidental backfire from the cars engine.

> The 2012 Event schedules for both GOODGUYS & NSRA have been released. If you haven’t seen them yet, we have them listed for you in this issue with every event listed. Make your plans now to attend your favorite event!! > As you will see elsewhere in this issue, the 2012 event & cruise schedule is getting busy already. Don’t delay!! Get your event or Cruise Nite listing sent in now. > Speaking of cruise nites, We are going to clear off all cruise nite listings for 2011 in the December issue. If your event is going to continue thru December and into early next year, you need to let us know right away so we don’t take yours off. > I want to give a BIG ―THANK YOU‖ to David Ferguson of the Hendersonville Cruise In. Dave does an absolutely great job of keeping all cruisers informed of shows and activities going on in the Hendersonville area and beyond. During Cruise Season he puts out a weekly update.

We have added a new business listing for

the Gearheads to take advantage of. We

have had some requests about companies

that do “WATER JET” machining. We are

proud to tell you about KIRCO Precision

Tool. They are located in the Chicago area,

but worth looking into for these type of

services. Ed Kirk owns the biz and he also

works for BILLET SPECIALITES in the

Design Dept. Check out the KIRCO

business listing here in the Gazzette and

their FACEBOOK PAGE and website. Better

yet, give Ed a call and tell him Jimmy B

said hey!!

Bonneville…we all talk about it. Some of us

have actually gone there for speed weeks and

an even smaller group has actually raced there.

It is the place for pure speed.

I, like a lot of other people, always believed that

racing on the salt started after WWII ended.

Was I wrong!!!

I recently read about this movie and more

importantly, the story it tells in an article by

―Land Speed Louise in the GOODGUYS

Gazette.

This is the true story of Ab Jenkins, the father of

Salt Racing and the records he set, a lot of

which still remain unbroken today.

Do yourself a favor and order this movie today.

The story is awesome and the vintage footage of

racing on the salt is unbelievable!!! I promise you

that you will enjoy this movie and learn a lot

about one piece of our heritage…Racing on the

Salt Flats. Give this one a 5 STAR Rating!!!

ROAD RUMBLINGS…cont.

We got this sad news passed on to us from

Ed Woodard & Joe Klinckhardt. Chuck

Hardesty who a lot of Mid-South hot rodders

knew passed away in October:

We've all lost a true hot rodder and I've lost

one of my best friends. Chuck Hardesty,

Caruthersville, MO., passed away October

18, 2011 after contracting a nasty virus. His

diabetes and prior liver problems greatly

increased the odds of contacting this very

rare virus. The virus is believed to have been

transferred through a cut on his hand while

doing what loved - working on an ole hot rod.

Chuck was a lover of all cars and had a

special fondness for all Henry 1932 Fords. He

never owned a "show car", but you can bet

they were all driven often and were all the

"real deal". Chuck was a long time member

of both national organizations. We can all

learn from this! Clean up and sterilize yourself

immediately if you obtain a cut while working

on anything - a habit that's hard for all of us.

Chuck leaves his wife Elizabeth, family, and a

host of friends to mourn his passing. His last

ride was in his 1957 Nomad followed by his

1932 3 window all Henry coupe. Some

thirteen other hot rodders and three Harleys

showed their respect by driving in the funeral

procession. Chuck was loved by all that knew

him. We will miss you Chuck and our prayers

go out to Elizabeth and the family. God bless.

Respectfully submitted,

Joe Klinkhardt

11 November 2011

Back in the April/May issue of the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE, we started a contest to see who the ―real drivers‖ were. The contest is all about you Gearheads getting out and driving your rides. A lot of folks talk about driving their rides a lot, but we wanted to see if it really happens.

The contest rules were very simple. Send us a picture of

your ride and a picture of the odometer by May 14th. We would need another picture of your odometer on 10/31/11 at the close of the contest. The one with the most miles wins. The winner will receive a special ward from the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE and a photo shoot of their ride, to be published in an upcoming issue of the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE. The real prize obviously is the fun of driving your ride!! The REAL CRUISER contest had a number of interested folks, but a lot of them did not have their Speedometers / Odometers hooked up. Sounds like a lot of driving ―by the tach‖ going on!! Based on these simple rules, there were 2 entries that finally qualified for the contest. Elmer Jones of Clarksville TN entered with his 1949 Mercury and David Plott of Mt Juliet TN entered with his 1971 Datsun 240Z.

So who is the ? You’re going have until next months issue to find

out who rolled up the most miles in their ride!!! Now…are you going to be part of the contest for 2012? We’re going to do it again and will announce more details early in 2012. Get those speedo’s fixed so you can join in.

Let’s see who the is in 2012!!

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH The Beginning’s and the Growth Words & Picture’s by Ed Woodard

You are in for a real treat this month Gearheads!! A true Hot Rodding treasure of the Mid- South, is the one and only Mr. Ed Woodard. For those of you who already know Ed you know what I am talking about. For those of you who don’t know Ed, you are going to get to know him very well, in this and upcoming issues of the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE. Ed has graciously volunteered to share how hot rodding got started in the Mid-South back in the early days, after the “big war”. Ed was there at the beginning and still is there today. The history of hot rodding in the Mid-South will be told by Ed in his own words and with some of his 10,000 plus pictures he has taken along the way. My only regret is that there isn't enough room to publish all of the pictures, because as they say, a picture is worth a 1000 words. Ed has worked at HOLLEY for forever, and he has helped many a hot rodder along the way. Now he is helping all of us learn about the way it was really done, “in the good old days”. Now lets head west to Memphis with Ed…..

HOW DID HOT RODDING START FOR ME & MY

GENERATION…. Have you ever wondered how all

this street rod, custom car, drag race, & round

track deal ever started? Where did it start? How in

the world did everybody find out when & where to

get together?

Hopefully in the next few months I will try to answer

some of those questions for all of us. Many hot

rodders made their careers as fighter pilots in the

50‘s & 60‘s to satisfy their need for speed. That

was my goal too, but it never worked out that

way….I guess mine was to be the performance

business….Which was really not that bad….

Well……..here ‗tis……….This is that first drag race mentioned at

Carlisle AR….first picture checking out the secure crowd control with

my buddy Jim Stevens lining up with a ‘51 Ford

Sometimes I think about those early days in

Memphis. I guess an old high school friend Jim

Stevens(who was a career USAF pilot flying B-

47‘s) started it all with me. Best I remember he

had a early 50‘s Chevrolet convertible with a 4x4

GMC inline 6 in it with 3 one barrel carbs. It ran

pretty good but he built it a little loose as it used about as much oil as gas.

next picture a couple of English bikes go for it….

That old Jimmy did get me to my first drag race

at Carlisle AR deserted airfield, that was about

1952. Seems drag strips & deserted airfields sort of went together.

Several come to mind, Courtland AL, Halls TN,

Sturgis KY.

Back then there were numerous ¼ round track

race tracks in the Memphis area. My old friend

Hooker Hood use to pull that 9HB race car to a

track every night but Sunday., all within 125

miles from Memphis. He had to win, or at least

not tear the car up, cause he towed the car.

3rd pic is bike on the big end…check the layout,

Page 14: GEARHEAD GAZZETTE - November 2011

14 November 2011

No trailers back then and his OldsmoFord was

the tow car….a ‘49 Ford coupe with a Olds 88

engine, about 1952. It was a real honor to attend

the HotRod Reunion in 2009 where Hooker was

the honoree, including 3 of his restored race cars

from the early days.

Did you know the first NASCAR 1 ½ mile super

speedway was in the Memphis area …sort of still

is !!!!.....& it is right next door to one of the most

famous street rodders!

4th pic bikes on the big end, I can see why they built an

airfield here….check the flat land!

In Memphis there was the Memphis Rodders hot rod

club that I always wanted to join but never seemed

to get with them even though I knew most of them.

Their rules for being a member was really tough

even if you were lucky enough to be invited to Ray

Gammons restaurant for their weekly meeting.

Once told, there was a member kicked out because

he went to a parents funeral….that is tough!

5th pic Sonny Belt beating a Buick. Sonny traded in a lowered

1950 white Mercury coupe with, red & white rolled & pleated

interior, Offy heads & Offy 3x2 intake….for a new 1954 Olds

88…yuk!

A big time Memphis Rodder was Ray Godman that

owned the Tennessee Bo-Weevil driven by Red

Dyer. It was runner up at the U.S.Nationals at

Detroit, the year before it moved to Indy.

Many of the Memphis Rodders are now the

Memphis Street Rod Assn members…..Did I

mention that I bought one of the historic ―Memphis

Rodders‖ plaques a couple of years ago…..at a

swap meet….Didn‘t have to join nuttin!!!!

Hot rodding is in your blood….That is just the way

it is…..

I was going to Memphis Tech High & had a

chopped 1934 Ford 5 window coupe with the

quarter windows filled in to make a 3 window. It

really was a sloppy job with body filler over the

glass

Did I mention Montgomery Auto Supply? My friend

Johnny Sausermann, why had a slick ‘51 Ford

convertible, worked there & I sometimes would

help out on Saturday. I remember we prepared

several engine displays for the company display in

the Memphis Rodders 1953 custom car show at

the downtown Ellis auditorium.

next pic shows those bikes going after it one more time….but this

might be the first bike wheely…check the bike on the right !!,

next pic is a classic drag race, 2 Jaguars getting it on,

I guess that was it for me….as the car show was

in my blood, but not in Memphis but later in

Nashville as you will see later. That‘s about the

time my high school days seemed to end when

my parents moved to Nashville when my father‘s

company transferred him. That always seemed

to happen about every 2 years for us, but

moving between my junior & senior years when

going to Tech High was very hard to take….

That‘s about the way it started for me …

see ya next month……..

the last picture is my buddy Jim slapping it on that ‘51 Ford &

of course losing another quart of oil from that 302 GMC.

next pic are a pair of street rods having at it….hope they

don‘t break those keyed axles out there in no-mans-land

Hot Rodding Texas Style words : Jimmy B

The LONESTAR ROUND Up Down in Austin Texas every spring, there is this little ol’ hot rod get together called the LONESTAR ROUND UP. This event is definitely ―traditional style‖ hot rods & customs only. Throw in a big dose of the Austin TX music scene at nite, starting at the KONTINENTAL Club. The center of the nitely cruise action is in the heart of Austin and to say it’s a ―big time‖ is an understatement. Here’s a small sampling of the KOOL Rides that came out to take in all the Texas style hot rod fun. They’re gonna do it again in 2012 so don’t miss it!

November 2011

Over in Columbia TN, Cody Johnson is putting together a very cool 48’ Chevy Truck. Here’s a few “spy shots” we got and are able to share with you. The stance is dead on and based on the chassis pic’s the color is looking good too!! The Gearheads will remember Cody from his starring role in the Justin Moore video that was shot at HOT RODS & THREADS earlier this year, where he is the Tech In Training (T.I.T.).

The following info was sent to us by our new contributing writer, Ed Woodard: Local hero Bill Akin at Churchill downs……His 3 Indy roadsters have won 2 firsts & 2 seconds at Pebble Beach. Akin went to the Louisville Concours October 2, 2011 and again won first in class!! That's 2 first's at Pebble Beach, a first at Amelia Island, and now a first at the Louisville Concours...Quite an accomplishment for a Tennessee redneck in what he considers his ugliest car!!....He was one of two that got to actually make some laps around the infamous Churchill Downs which had to be the highlight of his trip.…..

FOR SALE: This is being passed on from David Ferguson of the HENDERSONVILLE CRUISE IN who got it from

Tom Tucker of Hendersonville. Tom knows a guy who has a 1965 Corvette Convertible 4-speed that is a driver,

upgrade-as-you-go or restoration project which is located in Danvers, Mass. He bought it from a man that had it in his

garage since 1980. It has a 327/300HP, all numbers matching car, right down to the original carburetor, which he just

replaced to get it running (he kept all the parts that he replaced). Car runs great and he just put new calipers all around.

His idea is to sell it as a running, driving project car. He wants to get $25,000 for the car if he can. If you know of

anybody interested who attends the cruise-in, this might be a deal to get an original numbers matching Sting Ray. He

has not advertised it yet as he is still cleaning it up. It has had just a little body work done to it through the years but it

presents really well if somebody wants to drive it as is. To communicate with the owner (Tom Manetta), it is best to use

email. Mr. Manetta‘s email is: [email protected] (10/11)

Getting up early Saturday morning and hitting the swap meet before the good deals are gone and the heat hits is a must do!! Then there are the Roadster’s…all those cool top down cruising machines that come out for the weekend. Check out the pictures and put this one on your buckets list. For me, I have crossed it off my bucket list…twice. A third time sounds good!!

Finish Line….

November 2011

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...Holy Crap... what a ride!!!"

This months ―Finish Line‖ is dedicated to a couple of Hot Rodding greats who have crossed the finish line themselves this year. They are no longer with us, but their legacies live on with the racers they have helped right up to their last days. Joe Mondello passed away earlier this year. Joe became known as Dr Oldsmobile due to his expertise in making the Rocket V-8’s run. He could make any motor perform better, but his long time association with Oldmobile Racers gave him that name, when said, everyone knew who you were talking about. R.I.P. Joe…

On April 6, 2011 we lost a man who epitomized the term ―Persistence and Determination‖, and Drag Racing and the

Performance Aftermarket lost one of its brightest lights. Joseph A. (Joe) Mondello passed on at 9:21AM in Cookville ,

Tennessee at the age of 74 following complications from surgery. Joe was born on August 6, 1936 in Los Angeles ,

California .

Joe had a passion for everything mechanical and got his inspiration for his Posi-Flow design from the most obscure

place imaginable; water swirling in the toilet. But the basic idea of how the water flowed gave him all the engineering

required to port and polish a cylinder head for optimum performance. That one observation led to a 54 year career as

an engine builder, head porter and later as a teacher, inspiring an entire new generation of head porters and engine

builders.

Joe‘s talents were his resume and opened the door for Joe to work with some of the most notable race teams and

engine builders during the 60‘s. That same talent continued his involvement through the turn of the century.

His love affair with the automobile began at age 13. He wasn‘t old enough to purchase a car so he convinced his sister

to buy an old Ford Coupe for him – with his money – from a salvage yard. Joe spent many hours rebuilding and

modifying the coupe which became his daily driver. In 1951 his professional career began working on flat-head Fords in

a local shop. His passion became his career, and his passion was drag racing. His success with his own car, a ‘40

Ford Coupe, opened the door to work with other engine builders and the legend began.

His talents brought him together with ―Sush‖ Matsubara and the infamous purple Mondello-Matsubara Fiat Topolino

blown fuel altered, which won two NHRA National events and is a National Speed and E.T. Record Holder. The record

that still holds today -- 7.24 ET and 213 mph pass was made at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis in 1969, and won

runner-up in Competition Eliminator. The record stands today because the fuel altered class was dropped from drag

racing. GM, Ford, Chrysler, AMC – even Honda …Joe‘s touch improved all of the breed‘s heads for racing.

Then one day he received a phone call from Oldsmobile. It seems they were getting ready to create an Oldsmobile

Performance Parts Division and they were looking for engine builders to port and polish Oldsmobile heads for

increased performance. They sent heads to all the big head porters in the USA and Joe was one of the chosen. The

contest was simple; the shop that created the most power with their modified heads got the contract to be the

Oldsmobile Performance Dealer. All of the other shops used flow benches and modern equipment to prepare their

heads. Joe used his eye, his hands to feel the ports and some common sense. No surprise, Joe‘s heads made the

most power and he was nicknamed ―Dr. Oldsmobile‖ for his highly successful developmental work on the Olds V-8

engines.

Joe took on every challenge presented to him – from helping develop the Briggs & Stratton engine for the Junior

Dragster and Karting program, to off-road racing engines to off-shore and drag boat racing, as well as road racing

(Mondello‘s hands were all over the 1966 LeMans winning Ford GT-40 from Carroll Shelby). His Posi-Flow® heads

were on many of Don Garlits‘ Swamp Rats as well as many other leading racers – drag racing, land speed cars, boats,

road racing and circle track cars. Garlits‘ ran the first ever 200mph run with Mondello heads!

His passion for excellence lead him to establish the Mondello Technical School in 1996, devoted to teaching the art of

professional performance engine building and head porting design to all who came, including young men and women

who desired a career in the field. The school started in Paso Robles, Calif. and later moved to Crossville , Tennessee in

2005.

There have been countless studies done to prove it, but virtually

everyone knows that spending quality time with a kid is the greatest

gift you can give them. And sharing your appreciation for collector cars

is a great way to nurture their interest in a hobby that you can enjoy

together for many years to come.

His wife Mary says, ―Joe‘s passion was for those young people in the school. He wanted them to understand what it took

to be a professional in the shop and in customer relations. He also extended that passion to teaching many of them how

to be a ‗professional‘ as a drag racer. He taught them the technical aspects of their trade (as an engine builder and as a

racer) and how to interact with people.‖

She also said that the Quarter Mile Foundation and the PROJECT 1320 documentary became a major focus of his life

for the last year or so. Before his passing, Joe had begun work on a 555 cubic inch World Products Big Block Chevy

engine to be raffled for benefit of the Foundation, and was planning two additional engines. Mary relates how

impassioned Joe was about the PROJECT 1320 effort and the raffle engine. ―He said, ‗Mary, I did not qualify! I can‘t

finish the PROJECT 1320 engine…I‘ve DNQ‘d.‘‖

Joe is survived by his wife Mary, four children Bernard Mondello, Stephanie Mondello, Gina Ozanne, and Nica

Mondello-Gomez and four grandchildren, Nicole Mondello, Ross Ozanne, Adam and Joey Gomez.

Don Blair recently passed away also. Seems like everyone has heard of Blair’s Speed Shop in Pasadena Calif. Blair’s is still located in the same building as when it opened. A lot of the who’s who of hot rodding and drag racing have either worked there and learned the biz so to speak, or dealt with Don to get the parts they needed to win on Sundays. R.I.P Don…..
