GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012

For those of us living in the Mid-South, the car show and cruise nite season is in full swing and has been since mid April. The nicer weather we experience (read no snow & freezing cold!) let’s us get going a little earlier than our northern friends. Yea we know California & Florida are doing it all year long. Here in Middle Tennessee, we are lucky with all the cruise nite(s) we have to choose from. Most area’s of the country are lucky to have 1 or 2 cruise nites to attend. Within a 2 hour drive of Nashville TN, there are over 25 cruise nites to choose from. It’s not just a Friday or Saturday night deal either. Just about every night of the week has something going on that you can cruise to or go check out if your ride isn't ready to run yet. Throw in a couple of Saturday morning cruise events and you have to say we are truly fortunate! Have you been to more than just 1 cruise nite event this year? My guess and bet is NO! I would ask you why not? I know convenience and comfortablity are 2 big reasons. You know what to expect when you go to your “local” cruise and see the same faces and cars. It’s fun but….its the same old thing each week. Get in your ride this weekend and head out to another cruise nite. Gas prices are down a little. Check the weather and hit the road. You know what you’ll find…some new hot rodding friends!! Check out some different rides and get some new ideas for yours while you’re there. Experience something new. I know you will find hot rodders just like you who will welcome you to their cruise nite and THANK YOU for coming out!! Isn’t that what its all about….the people..YES!

The other thing that’s important about being part of these cruise nites, is just that. Being part of them. If we don’t attend them then they die. When they die, its hard to get them going again. Don’t believe me, just ask the folks in Franklin TN. The Back Yard Burger cruise got changed and moved and the support slowly fell off to the point that no business was interested in hosting it anymore. Please understand that it wasn’t the cruisers fault, a lot of things happened over a short period of time that help this one die. Point is a number of folks have tried to get it going again and it just doesn’t get any traction to get going. So I’ll say it again, take a drive this weekend and check out at least one different cruise nite this year. ----------------------------------------- I got feedback from last months column about car show awards. I got both written and a lot of verbal feedback thru a number of discussions. I have started a MAILBOX column this month to post the feedback I received in writing. The comments and feedback that came from discussions, I wont print, as I want to get all the words right and don’t want to misrepresent anyones position by forgetting a word or not saying it right. If you have feedback, send it to us and we’ll share it with all the readers. Let us know what you think! Based on some discussions, I am including this CAR SHOW CREED. Kirk Jones, Editor of the Goodguys Gazette had this in a column last year, and said we could use it. Thanks Kirk..its right on the money…from my perspective.

“ I’ll say it again, take a drive this weekend “

We want to give a “SHOUT OUT to HUNTER

CUSTOM AUTO’s own Johnny Freund.

Johnny was featured in the latest issue of

STREET RODDER magazine in the “20

YEARS AGO” section. Quote from Street

Rodder: “ Johnny helped introduce the

SMOOTH LOOK to Southern Rodders with

his purple 33’ Ford Victoria. The car was a

finalist for the RIDLER award at the 1992

Detroit Autorama”. Check it out and take a

look at that cool 33. We can remember

seeing it at the GOODGUYS Indy show in the

BOYDS Pick area.

And remember to tell em’ ya saw it in the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE cause THE FUN STARTS HERE!!

6 GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012

Quote of the month from Stan “Hot Shoe”

Hardcastle of the Music City Mopar Club

while watching the cars roll into the

GOODGUYS Nashville Nationals event: “I

just love hearing those motors that have

that thump from the cam and are ‘hittin a

lick’! The kind of sound that lets you know

its coming. It scares small animals away

and makes little kids cry!! That’s the kind of

motor you have to have in a hot rod!”

GOODGUYS has a new logo!! Look close and you

will the Camaro that as been added to the iconic

logo. There is reasoning for this change, and not just

because the wanted to put a Camaro on the logo

either. Head over to www.good-guys.com and click

on HOT NEWS and scroll down and see the story on

the new logo…pretty cool.

Murfreesboro Cruise News!!!! The MHRC wants everyone to know that on July 6th,

THERE WILL NOT BE A FRIDAY NITE CRUISE IN. The Club is going to take a 1 week break due to the 4th of July holiday. Cruising will resume on July 13th.

HELP Spread the word!!!!

Congrats to Frank & Kathy Ward for having their 1932 Ford 3w Coupe selected as the Directors Pick at the NSRA Nationals South Plus event in

May. Sweet looking ride guys!!

HELP NEEDED!! The MANCHESTER “CRUISIN’ DOWNTOWN STYLE”

Power Cruise is coming up on Saturday July 14th. The

Cruisin Downtown Style team needs some cruisers to set

up and lead a cruise from their location to the CRUISIN’

DOWNTOWN STYLE Cruise In. All you have to do is

contact Jeff Burnette at 931-273-1902 and let him know

where your “power cruisin’“ from. We’ll help get the word

out on where the cruises will start from. The Manchester

Cruise runs from 5-9pm on the city square.

This is one cool cruise in and you need to take a ride to

check it out. Jeff and Scotty and the whole Cruisin

Downtown Style crew do a great job. A BIG 50/50 raffle,

games, kids games, door prizes lot so food vendors and

all those cool rides parked in the city square.

So our buddy Brian Baker of Franklin TN orders his wife Amy a new

2013 BOSS 302 Mustang. After a 4 month wait it comes in. Amy

lets Brian take it for a “drive”. OOPS should’ve lifted off the loud

pedal as the COOL BLUES are behind you. Never fear!! Just offer

the deputy a turn behind the wheel of your wife's new car. Anything

to get out of a ticket eh Brian? He got a warning ticket!

No… the deputy did not take the car for a ride….

And remember to tell em’ ya saw it in the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE cause THE FUN STARTS HERE!!

“IT WON’T HAPPEN TO ME!!”

How many of us have said those words!! Lots of us for sure.

Unfortunately things do happen to those old cars we drive. Because

they do, you should be checking your ride out on a regular basis to make

sure its safe.

Here are some pictures from May of this year, of a serious incident

that took place on the way home from the NSRA Nationals South in

Knoxville. These pictures were taking along I-40.

This is one of the giveaway cars from NSRA from 7 or 8 years ago or

so. The car was Safety Inspected by NSRA and received the NSRA

Safety Sticker for meeting their guidelines, to earn the sticker in the

window.

Even though a car passes an inspection at some point in time, you

have to continually check the car for safety. All it takes is one bolt coming

loose or a hairline crack in a part and disaster can strike in a matter of

seconds.

Please don’t make excuses for not checking your vehicle on a regular

basis. If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for your family or friends who may

be riding with you. Please practice SAFETY FIRST!!!...your life

depends on it.

Team to Compete in

2012 GREAT RACE!!

EARLY’S HONEY STAND RACE TEAM TO

PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL “GREAT RACE”

Cross-Country Vintage Car Rally To Raise Money

for Autism Awareness and Research

SPRING HILL, Tenn. – Erskine Early used to

transport honey from the hives to his roadside stand

in a car similar to what current Early’s Honey Stand

owner Curt Gibbs will be driving as part of a cross-

country vintage car race next month.

From June 23 through July 1, Gibbs and his son,

Curtis, will pilot a 1932 Ford Roadster around the

Great Lakes and across 19 cities and four states as

part of the Great Race, pitting driver/navigator teams

against the clock and each other in a timed,

controlled-speed endurance competition over scenic

public highways and roads.

As part of the event, the Gibbs are also raising

money toward the Vintage Car Rally Association’s

(VRCA) Race for Autism. The VRCA

promotes vintage vehicle time/speed/distance

competitive events, and donates 100 percent of the

profits to specific autism causes.

“I’ve always enjoyed working on old cars, and Curtis

and I have participated in these races before for

fun,” said Curt Gibbs, owner of Early’s Honey Stand.

“When we heard of the effort to raise money for

autism awareness, we wanted to offer a special set

of Early’s products to help drive donations. This is a

great cause, and something we are proud to

support.”

Early’s Honey Stand – a gourmet Southern food and

gift company located in Spring Hill, Tenn. – has

been in continuous operation since 1925,

specializing in locally made, country-style food

products, including local honey, smoked meats,

jams and jellies and more. Early’s Race Team is

offering a special Early’s gift basket featuring its

famous Thick Sliced Bacon (Elvis’ Favorite !),

Country Ham Slices, Local Clover Honey,

Blackberry Jam and Stone Ground Grits.

In addition, this special gift box will include the first

in a series of “Kelsey Kards” drawn by Kelsey Scott,

a resident of Spring Hill Tennessee with Autism and

Downs Syndrome, with proceeds going to benefit

autism. Beginning in June, and continuing

throughout the summer, these gift baskets can be

purchased from the company’s retail locations in

Spring Hill and Lebanon, and through their website

www.earlysgifts.com, Early’s distributes Tennessee

products all over the globe.

99 teams from around the nation are participating in

the 2012 Great Race, which starts in Traverse City,

Mich., travels through Canada, New York,

Pennsylvania, Ohio, and ends in Dearborn, Mich.,

seven days later. Following specific course

instructions, teams navigate through four to seven

timed checkpoints each day. Their arrival time at

each checkpoint is recorded and compared against

the perfectly driven route, with each second off the

perfect time, (either early or late) counted as penalty

points. The winning team is the one with the lowest

overall score (the most accurately driven route) at

the end of the event. To learn more, visit

From the mail box:

I loved the article on doing shows for the

pleasure and the people not the trophy's! I

have had that conversation over and over with

my brother during the build of my car. Everyone

spends countless hours building their dream

car....or at least what they can afford to build,

and they are never perfect (except for a few). I

have to remind him I am building to learn, will

drag race it, will cruise in it, and it will show

signs of use. That won't stop me from going to

shows for sharing what I built with other

gearheads (that is, if I ever get it done) Anyway,

I enjoy the GG and look forward to going to

shows and hanging out.

and they call it... DETROIT” Every year, in the middle of winter, in downtown Detroit, they hold what many consider (me included) the BEST indoor show all year long. There are a couple that are bigger, but none of the others brings out the level of cars as “Detroit” does. Call it the “RIDLER” effect. More on that elsewhere in this issue. Over 700 customs, muscle cars, hot rods and everything in between were on hand for the tens of thousands who came out on a snowy weekend in February. Throw in the AUTORAMA EXTREME or “the basement” as the regulars call it and you have one kick ass car show. If you haven’t been to this one, you need to go. Don’t just put it on your bucket list…check it off your bucket list next year. Why do they call it “DETROIT”?? Just look at some of the great cars on display.

The Don Ridler trophy is THE most prized award anywhere! The RIDLER award is given to the vehicle that is shown for the first time anywhere. It’s not limited to a certain type of vehicle. If you have what the selection committee thinks it takes to make the GREAT 8, you are in the hunt. Just making the GREAT 8 is a HUGE honor. Stupid sums of money go into building some of the cars that contend for THE RIDLER. Why

do people do it…because they want to! We’re glad they do too. Here are the GREAT 8 for 2012 and the winner of the RIDLER award.

“the basement” The AUTORAMA EXTREME as its officially known takes place on the lower level of COBO Hall during the Detroit Auto-Rama. For the folks having a good time with their cars, rock-a –billy bands and Pin-Up girl contest…its simply “the basement”. A lot of attendee’s think this is the best part of the Auto-Rama. It’s loose, no pressure, fun and a whole lot more. Look closely if you go and you will see many of the “big name” builders and car owners spending time downstairs and lovin’ it. Here’s a small look at all the fun!

Claying is a process that is relatively new to the world of automotive detailing but has been used by paint shops for many years. Its resume reads like a miracle cure, and after reading it you may think that it's too good to be true. But claying delivers. The clay we are talking about is a special type that is required for car detailing although it is similar to the type kids have played with for years. What it does for a painted surface is similar to the function of polish, but unlike polish, clay is not an abrasive. This is an advantage for the casual detailer, as no harm can be done to the paint. Polishes serve to remove stubborn contaminants on the paint surface. This can include airborne pollutants, tree sap, bird droppings and so on. It performs its function by removing the contaminants from the surface of the paint but won’t remove the paint. It works by virtue of its flexibility as it easily forms to the exact contour of the surface it is in contact with. It also works on surfaces that might not be appropriate for polish, such as glass, bright work and trim items. To work with clay you will need a lubricant. Clay kits ship with a "Quick Detailer" spray which works great and creates the exact glide needed to perform this task. Spray the area to be clayed with the lubricant and place the clay bar on the surface you sprayed. Place your hand over the bar and let the bar glide over the surface with minimal pressure. You will be

able to feel the contaminants release from the surface. As you progress, you'll note that the clay bar gets thinner. You'll then have to rework the bar so that it is thick again by kneading it. Some detailers like to just fold it over; the reasoning is that it will have a cleaner surface. You'll get a feel for how it is working by the way it glides over the paint surface When you are finished with a section, dry it using a microfiber towel. It's a good idea to rinse the entire car with a hose after you are finished with the claying task. When you are finished take the test again and feel the difference. It’s truly amazing. Claying is an odd process. If you haven't tried it, it can be difficult to understand as it doesn't seem to conform to most of what we know about car detailing. If this is your thinking, we encourage you to give it a try. It really is easy! Many amateur detailers are a bit wary of the concept but after they try it, they are sold. A clay bar is good for about four to five treatments. This depends on factors such as the size of the vehicles and how dirty they are. One important note: if you ever drop a clay bar, you MUST throw it away. The potential for causing scratches from material it picks up is just too great. Store it in a box or baggie to keep it clean. SELECT 6 – LEGENDS CUP WINNER The LEGENDS CUP competition is unique to the Chicago WOW show. The selection committee looks at all the

vehicle being shown in Chicago for the very 1st time, and the first cut highlights the TOP 20. The selection committee

then tightens up the criteria and chooses the “SELECT 6” vehicles. At the end of all the looking and judging the

selection is made and the LEGENDS CUP winner is revealed at the awards ceremony.

Make no mistake on how big this award is! Builders like Bobby Alloway, Rad Rods by Troy and Greening Auto

While we were attending the Chicago World of Wheel show, we got a look inside the shop at Ken’s Hot Rods in Seneca IL. A lot more work has been done to the GT-39 owned by George Lamb and being built by Ken Juricic. Our good friend Larry Williams of WILLIAMS GRAPHIC’s – Joliet IL. Has done a lot of the design work on this cool cruiser. Ed Kirk of KIRCO TOOL has helped out with the water jetting of some of the unique metal work on the 39 Ford. George bleeds FORD Blue so this one has a FOMOCO engine and trans combo plugged into the engine bay. This topless cruiser is definitely going to be a head turner when its done…it’s a head turner now!

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH Words & Picture’s by Ed Woodard

Assisted by Hannah Woodard

Norm & His Friends….all of them!

I believe it was 1975 at the Memphis NSRA Nats that I

first met Norm. It was like I had known him all my life.

That is the way he is, everybody is Norm’s friend and if

you are a street rodder you instantly become an old

friend. The company that I worked for had a wheel

booth in the same building with Norm so we crossed

paths several times during the weekend.

From that time on it has seemed that Norm & I have

been in constant touch with each other. I had Norm in

as feature of several Nashville car shows. I attended

many shows & rod runs with Norm and it seemed that

we almost became like brothers. If you were ever

around Norm very much you would feel the same way.

I was told that Darrell Starbird once introduced him

saying “Where ever you saw Norm you would see

smiles on everyone around him”. I must agree with

him.

Following are some short experiences with Norm to

share along with a few pictures.

To tell something about Norm we must first raise the

Polish Flag (Taken at Winston-Salem in 1976), now we

can start!

During the construction of the Kookie II Norm called

me with concern with having a cloth interior installed. I

told him with an open car the first dew falling would kill

the upholstery. Even though he had just delivered it

several hundred miles away for the interior I got him

lined up for a leather interior installed so he turned

around & went back & picked up the car and carried to

another shop.

I am fortunate that I took a lot of pictures during our

trips, however the best deal was made during the

Winston Salem trip where I got Norm to record some of

his songs in a recording studio in Nashville on 2

different sessions.

Best part was I invited several hot rodders to sit in the

audience. I got it all, songs, whistle & the magic of that

Martin guitar producing a pitch perfect sound. I plan on

putting the sounds together with all my pictures with

Norm real soon.

Norm once told me, when I was thinking about selling

my unfinished 1930 Buick street rod, that when you sell

car, you sell your soul. I think he was right. I did sell it

after it was finished & often think of that car somewhere

in the northwest. I guess, his thoughts are something to

think about.

I could tell story after story about Grabowski and his

trend setting cars, trucks & rides he has exposed all of

us to. Think about what those vehicles did for all of us.

The Kookie Kar, the 1932 Studebaker(Now owned by

Joe Klinkheart), the Kookie II(How many copies have

we seen of this car & the Dodge blue), the 1928 Nash

Fish truck(Whew!!!) and others that were planned a

Zipper track roadster & the DeSoto Dual cowl Phaeton.

I guess we should not leave out those fabulous wood

shift knobs, canes & trivia.

Editor’s Note: This month Ed has decided to give us a very personal

look at his good friend Norm Grabowski. As you will see, Ed and Norm

have been involved in a lot of “hi-jinx” together over many many years.

Thankfully Ed had the foresight to take a lot of pictures that he is

sharing with us here. Along with some of the fun they have enjoyed.

Norm the Polish Flag…SALUTE!

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont.

All had their problems however I think the biggest

challenge of all he is having is his ‘bout with cancer that

is slowing draining life from my old friend. I am told that

the cancer had cut off his air supply & hard to accept

food when he entered the Barnes Hospital in St Louis.

Surgery was scheduled a week later but was persuaded

to accept home remedy of fruit & vegetables by his

family. I am really surprised medical science has not

pursued this treatment method. I am told that Norm has

accepted this form of treatment, so I will leave it there!

The Legendary HENWAY Trucks……The rest of the

story !

I was going to add this at the last of this article, however

I think I should fill everyone in on the Grabowski,

McIntire, Cooper story first. It seems that my interest in

these three historical trucks strikes a chord with me

about what true Hot Rodders can do with a little

imagination. Not only did Grabowski dream up the

Henway story but did it in a way that other truck nuts

could carry the story forward. After many fun filled years

of touring these historic vehicles we find the trucks

somewhat in dis-repair. Norm’s Henway is badly in need

of restoring. His Henway now for sale to cover his

serious cancer expenses. Homer McIntire re-locating to

North Carolina & needing to sell his Henway to aid in his

retirement package. Ken’s truck is deteriorating in a field

in Canada. I always envisioned all three fully restored in

a car collection with documentation about their

legendary story. I guess that was a dream of a

sentimental old fool! Any way, the following is how it all

started.

It seemed that the Henway tale that was published in the

March 1974 Rod & Custom magazine was not the end

of the famous Henway story. At the time, Grabowski’s

1923 Henway truck was the only surviving whiskey

runner. It would seem that after Norm’s restoration of the

famed whiskey hauler two other Henway’s were

discovered as documented by Norm. I suggest that you

locate a copy of the 1974 Rod & Custom magazine to

read all the details concerning Norm’s “Restoration” as

well a reading about the Henway “Legendary whiskey

runner”.

Norms Henway Orange Truck

Norm Grabowski’s Henway truck as photographed on

one off my trips with Norm.

As for Norm’s trips I remember riding to Winston Salem

& stopping a small store where a young lady recognized

him from the Hooper movie

and carrying on about a movie star in her store. But the

best one was returning to Nashville when a trucker

called out to another trucker about what was coming his

way. Asking what was it he said I am not sure, but I think

it is a big R (Roadway) driver on vacation. It seems,

Norm’s truck was painted about the same color orange

as the Roadway trucks.

I was fortunate to witness the restoration of the one

located in a barn in the Nashville area. This truck is the

one that has been seen in the previous Gearhead

Gazzette & owned by Homer McIntire. You will note the

photographs show the features of both as well as the

differences. I suppose the year models might make

difference!

Norm in the HOLLEY Booth

Norm the movie star!

Page 28: Gearhead Gazzette June 2012 Issue

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. As Homer was restoring his famed truck he would

occasionally need to check measurements on Norm’s

truck, as seen in one of the photos.

Homer measuring Norms truck

I really guess I am a lucky person as I was fortunate to

take several trips with both Norm & Homer in their

Henways.

The best part of Homer’s is the opportunity to tell the

“Henway” “Story” to people wanting to know the details

about the famed C-cab. I usually start off with :”As the

story goes…….” Which would always crack Homer up

because he knew anything goes from that point on about

the “Henway Story”. Sometimes I would even tell the

truth!!!.

Homers rear view

Homer McIntire’s Henway truck, with highly detailed

woodwork & cut glass. Painted in highly durable

industrial Imron will keep its luster for years to come.

The remaining Henway whiskey hauler, owned by Ken

Cooper in Canada is a cab over with dual axles, longer

bed that was capable of carrying more booze. Also it

should be noted that Norm’s Henway was equipped with

a 413ci engine which could easily leave the Feds high &

dry, however the other 2 Henways were equipped 350ci

engines along with tilt beds. I supposed a dumped load

of hooch was better than getting busted.

Ken Cooper’s Cab over Henway is by far the heavy duty

truck of the three, with dual axles designed to carry

many kegs of the devils brew.

The big question is where are the Henway’s now? At

last report, Grabowski’s truck is in his Lead Hill garage

badly needing restoration. Ken Coopers is also in a

similar condition in Ontario Canada. Homer’s Henway is

in perfect condition awaiting the next whiskey run from

Canada or Thunder Road ! Now, lets see where I left

Robert Mitchum’s phone number!

We should all pray for Norm’s recovery as proper

medical attention is badly needed. Several weeks ago,

just before Norm was getting into a serious situation with

the cancer, he ask me if I would hold his hand through

this ordeal. Of course I said yes!

Even though I am several hundred miles away from my

old friend I am still holding his hand and will as long as I

am alive.

Get well Norm…we need ya!

GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012

The TENNESSEE MOTORAMA Words & Pic’s by Jimmy B

Back in early January, a new event helped kickoff the indoor car show & swap meet season. Tom “Scooter” Williams of Both Barrels Promotions kicked off a cool event…The TENNESSEE AUTORAMA. The HUGE Mid- Tenn Expo in Murfreesboro TN saw a swap meet, vendors and cool cars as part of this event. Being a new event, participation was fair, as folks were checking out this facility and show. Watch for this one to be bigger in 2013. Scooter already has the 2013 show set up, returning to the MID-TENN Expo Center. Check out some of the great rides that did take a chance and had a great time at the show!!

Hot Rods…CHECK, Kustoms…CHECK, Custom Bike’s…CHECK, Lowriders…CHECK, 80th Deuce Drive In…CHECK!!! The 2012 GNRS at the Pomona Fairplex had these and so very much more to see and take in. One day truly was not enough. Heck the outside show around the buildings took a day to see all the cool rides that participated in that part of the event. As many other have said before, since moving south from its home and starting point of Oakland Ca, the GNRS has done nothing but grow and get cooler. This one should definitely be on your “bucket list”. Enough of this…check out the cool rides!!

Finish Line….

www.gearheadgazzette.com

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...Holy Crap... what a ride!!!"

If you’re building any kind of hot rod (hot rod, muscle car, kustom, restoration, etc.) you’re gonna have haul some parts around. They don’t always fit in the back seat or the trunk of your car. You really need a truck!! Speed shops had them from day 1 way back when. They made them look cool and do some advertising for their business too. Here’s some cool trucks as we finish up the June issue of the GAZZETTE.
