Dear Members,

I am proud of what you do and how well you do it. Since 1920, the Garden Club of Virginia has been making a positive impact throughout the Commonwealth.

At Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s retreat in Bedford County, the Garden Club of Virginia has begun reviving an important ornamental landscape, which was nearly lost to history. The restoration is based on the founding father’s own records and supported by evidence uncovered by Poplar Forest’s team of archaeologists.

Further south, the Garden Club of Virginia will be renovating the grounds in front of the historic Henry County Courthouse. The improved green space will serve as the centerpiece of the larger downtown rehabilitation plan. This project is the outgrowth of a partnership between the GCV, the city of Martinsville, the Martinsville-Henry County Historical Society and a local foundation.

This year we presented our second Bessie Bocock Carter Conservation Award to the Garden Club of Norfolk for its work in conjunction with the Hermitage Museum & Gardens. Together, they are designing and constructing a rain garden that will capture and treat storm water in the watershed of the Lafayette River. Meanwhile, the 2010 Common Wealth Award went to the Harborfront Garden Club, which plans to complete a courtyard garden at the St. Mary’s House for Disabled Children. This outdoor healing space will provide the young

patients with an introduction to local plants and butterflies.

This year, as in previous years, good works speak for themselves. From South of the James to the Northern Piedmont, from the Chesapeake Bay to the Shenandoah Valley, our member clubs are united with a common vision. We have only to look at our recent accomplishments to agree that we are indeed living up to our mission.

Reviewing your many achievements of this past year not only pleases me, it also energizes me. With our lofty goals and track record of successful projects, who knows what we will do in the year to come? I can’t wait to see.

Warmly,

With funds raised from members and others, the Club began restoration of the arbor and pergola.

proVidinG sCholarships The Garden Club of Middle Peninsula begins a new scholarship fund that supports young students entering environmental, horticultural

CultiVatinG tomorrow’s hortiCulturists For 30 years, The

Martinsville Garden Club has maintained the garden at the Blue Ridge Regional Library children’s wing, and their commitment to budding young environmentalists doesn’t stop there. GoinG Green with earthsaVers The Winchester-Clarke Garden Club developed

a key club program two years ago that continues their resolve to reduce consumption and environmental impact. Adopting one conservation issue each month, members embrace practices such as eliminating use of plastic water bottles and substituting compost for fertilizer. By simply using canvas totes, the Club conserved in one year’s time 6,400 petroleum-laden plastic bags.

CurbinG the #1 sourCe of new pollution in urban waterways The Garden Club of Norfolk is partnering with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and The National Wildlife Federation to promote a swimmable, fishable Lafayette River by 2014. resurreCtinG the miGhty Chestnut The Mill Mountain Garden Club, in partnership with the American Chestnut Foundation and the city of

Roanoke, has begun planting hybrid chestnut trees in an effort to replace those

decimated by the blight that claimed four billion chestnuts in a generation’s time. This new grove, in addition to the wildflower garden the club has maintained since 1971, is just a portion of their master plan for the mountain.

CreatinG a nature oasis for Children Celebrating their 100th year, The Warrenton Garden Club hosted its 28th summer Nature Camp for children ages 9 to 12 years. Opening in the summer of 1983, in partnership with the Piedmont Environmental Council, this program encourages ecological exploration and outdoor summertime fun. Staying connected with the children is one way this centennial club stays young.

Historic Garden Week

upCominG The 79th Historic Garden Week in

Virginia is scheduled for April 21–28, 2012. House

and garden tours cover three horticultural areas and

attract visitors from across the country.

Members of The Williamsburg Garden Club greeted fellow

gardeners from the Garden Club of Bermuda during their visit to

Historic Garden Week in Virginia on April 19.

Agecroft Hall, one of the

luncheon sites for Richmond’s

tours.

Eyre Hall’s magnificent

landscape includes the oldest

gardens under continuous

maintenance in Virginia and

is a perennial highlight of the

Historic Garden Week tour on

the Eastern Shore.

A showing of the Warrenton Foxhounds is an

annual feature of Historic Garden Week.

Boxwood members,

Hutch Livingston

and Judy Kidd, help

prepare a home

for visitors.

The establishment of Historic Garden Week goes back to 1927, when a

flower show raised an impressive $7,000 to save a number of Thomas Jefferson’s original trees on the lawn at Monticello. Two years later, the first tour was organized and 78 years after that, Virginia Living magazine named it the “Preppiest Event in Virginia.” The distinguishing feature that binds all 47 member clubs together, HGW is now a week-long event and the largest and most venerable house and garden tour in the country. Proceeds from this statewide event further the mission of the Garden Club, including the restoration and preservation of 43 public gardens and properties throughout Virginia.

Its easement, granted to GCV by the Valentine family in 1972, was the first accepted by the state on a City of Richmond landmark.
