We are marching towards a few signature events on our tournament
calendar as well as getting within shouting distance of a few
important membership events. The new look to the Players
Championship has been well received and may be one of the key
factors in increased tournament participation. The Top 25
Regular, 15 Seniors, and 10 Assistants will advance to Bellerive
Country Club for a guaranteed pay day. In addition, that day
will also feature the finals for the season long TNT Yamaha Par 3 Shoot-out. In
addition to both of these events, we will also feature the Section Championship at the
newly renovated St Clair Country Club as well as the tradition at the Lake (Lake
Team Event). Following the conclusion to the tournament schedule we will
recognize our Gateway PGA Section Award Winners and conduct our association
election process. Please read our communications to stay abreast on all of the details
around our membership opportunities and upcoming events.
Please take a moment to read the “Officers Desk” article this month from Ben Kent,
PGA. The leadership at the Gateway PGA is really excited about bringing together
the golf industry for the 2nd Annual Gateway Golf Summit. I want to thank Club Car
and M&M Golf Cars for their generous support of this important gathering. Please
consider putting November 10th on your calendar as it promises to be a rewarding
day for anyone connected to the game of golf.
As we draw towards the final months of the busy season, I would like to personally
thank all of our committee members who have taken the time to make the 2014
Gateway PGA season a great one. We have continued to grow our influence in the
community and elevate the standards for our fellow PGA Professionals. I am excited
to build on key undertakings such as the Teaching & Coaching Summit, Gateway
Golf Summit, Junior College Combine, The Players Championship, Ozzie & Friends
Concert and more. Thanks to everyone who stood up to make an impact and I look
forward to working with you to grow these opportunities into the future.
All the best,

FROM THE OFFICERS DESK
It is with great excitement that I am able to formally announce that the Second Annual
Gateway Golf Summit is scheduled for Monday, November 10, 2014. Last year, we had the
privilege of hosting 40 various local and National industry leaders from several organizations,
including the Gateway PGA, Club Managers Association of America, Golf Course
Superintendents Association of America, Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association, United
States Golf Association, Missouri Golf Association, St. Louis District Golf Association, St. Louis Women’s District
Golf Association, Missouri Women’s Golf Association, St. Louis Women’s Golf Association and a few local Sales
Representatives. We accomplished many things, including a successful facilitation of dialogue among the attending
organizations and we learned that strong interest exists for the Summit to be an annual event. We explored how the
group dynamic would work with “all of us in the same room” and determined the best format for the Summit going
forward.
The Second Annual Gateway Golf Summit will be bigger, better and inclusive of all industry leaders whom
would like to attend (provided you are one of the first 200 to register). Registration will be on BlueGolf and will
open on Monday September 29, and the cost will be $50, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting organic Growth
of the Game Initiatives in our Section.
The format for the Summit will be intriguing and thought-provoking with four (4) distinct panel discussions,
followed by an interactive Q and A with event panelists. The two a.m. panel discussions will be somewhat macro in
focus, with the first session drilling down into the state of our game on a National level. The second a.m. session
will delve into National Championships, with different perspectives from several key players in this arena. After
lunch, we will focus on local Growth of the Game Initiatives and discuss how Growth of the Game is the
responsibility of all of the allied associations, as well as the Gateway PGA.
Special thanks to Club Car and M & M Golf Car for their ongoing support, as they will be our Event
Sponsors again in 2014. I hope you are able to attend this event. Your participation and presence as a Gateway
PGA Member is important. MSR’s will be offered for those in attendance as well. If you have any questions about
the Summit, please contact me at (636) 300-5703. Stay tuned for a venue announcement as well as a list of our
esteemed special guests!

GROWTH OF THE GAME
Congratulations to Nic Bunning and the Greenbriar PGA Jr League All Star Team for advancing
to the Regional Finals in Oklahoma City. This weekend (September 20 & 21) Greenbriar will
compete against other regional qualifying teams for a chance to head to Atlanta in October for the
Championships. Join me in wishing Nic and his team good luck!
Missouri Golf Day, Tuesday October 7th at WingHaven Country Club, is an annual event that
celebrates golf and the impact on tourism and the state’s economy in Missouri. A new
addition this year is the charitable beneficiary aspect – proceeds from MO Golf Day will
benefit The Gateway PGA REACH Foundation and our work at improving lives through golf.
I encourage you to participate in the event and support two great causes!
The second Allied Associations Summit is slated for Monday, November 10th and will feature a slew of
nationally-recognized leaders in all aspects of the golf industry – PGA of America, USGA, CMAA, GCSAA, and
more. This year’s summit will be open to Professionals to attend – more information will be coming soon. An
important item to note is that all proceeds from the Summit will go towards joint initiatives and programming aimed
at growing the game of golf across the Gateway Section. Join us for a very valuable, informative, and charitable
opportunity.
Player Development Tip – Starting Early and Setting Yourself Up for Success in 2015
It’s never too early to start planning your Player Development calendar for 2015. In fact, this is the perfect time!
As the season starts to slow down, and this year’s junior programs/Get Golf Ready classes/clinics/event days/etc. are
fresh on your mind, take a few minutes to write down a few notes on 2014: what went well, what you’d like to
change for next year, what your member’s/customer’s suggestions or praises were, and your goals for next year. It’s
easy to identify goals… but to make them a reality requires planning and persistence.
If one of your goals is to offer more Get Golf Ready classes or double the amount of juniors you can handle in your
junior program, start by writing out the steps necessary to achieve these goals. Maybe those steps include finding an
Independent Contractor to help teach, or adding more equipment to your junior golf program, or identifying a
community event near you to bring golf to. Bust out your 2015 calendar and give yourself timeframes to
accomplish each step. Start tentatively holding dates where appropriate.
Finally, know where to find resources to help. The PGA provides tons of marketing resources, program registration
tools, and our local Player Development Regional Manager - Frank. And don’t forget about me! I always enjoy
helping facilities in their brainstorming and planning process, so please do not hesitate to call. I’m waiting by my
phone now…Good luck!

An interesting rules situation developed at a junior college tournament hosted by Rend Lake
Junior College. Two players putted and their balls collided.
When Rend Lake coach Dave Smith called me I told him the first thing to sort out was which
player made a stroke at a ball on the putting green first. Once that was determined he needed
to find out which player was farthest from the hole.
Play was in groups of three so the third player was able to tell Dave which player putted
first. One of Dave's players from Rend Lake played first. A player from Indian Hills
Community College made his stroke when the first ball was in motion. The player from Rend Lake was away. This
meant the player from Indian Hills made a stroke while a ball was in motion after a stroke from the putting. Since it
was not his turn to play the player from Indian Hills incurred a two stroke penalty under Rule 16-1f.
Since the balls collided a second rule comes into play. Rule 19-5b tells us "If a players ball in motion after a stroke
on the putting green is deflected or stopped by another ball in motion after a stroke, the players stroke is cancelled.
The ball must be replaced and replayed, without penalty. Therefore both players replaced their ball and putted again.
RULES CORNER
ASSISTANTS CORNER The month of September was highlighted by the National Car Rental Assistants Championship
that was played at WingHaven Country Club. Forty-two players teed it up in this year’s event
that was played on Tuesday, September 2. This year’s tournament was greeted with three and
half inches of rain at WingHaven the night before. Thanks to a terrific job by WingHaven’s
staff we were able to complete the tournament.
This year’s tournament had 2 spots available going to the national tournament in October.
Adam Betz did his best early to make sure one of those spots would be his. Adam opened
round 1 with a sizzling 8 under 64! He followed that up in the afternoon with a 69. Adam’s
two round total of 133 won the event by 8 shots. Congrats Adam!
The second qualifying spot went to a playoff to decide. Brandon Veld and Shane Blankenship both tallied a two
round total of 141. On the first playoff hole Brandon Veld made birdie to earn the final spot. Congrats to Brandon!
Thank you to all who participated in this year’s event. We owe a big thank you to the entire staff at WingHaven
Country Club for all of their efforts. Also, want to thank Steve Finn and our entire Gateway PGA staff for putting
on a great tournament and supporting us through the year!

The Gateway PGA is honored to partner with Forest Hills Country Club in conducting the 2014 Fall
Membership Meeting and the 2014 Gateway PGA Awards Ceremony. Each of these events will take place
on Monday, December 8th. The Gateway PGA Membership Meeting will be highlighted by the election
process for the 2015 Board of Governors. The annual awards dinner is being chaired by Gideon Smith of
Quincy Country Club who is our 2013 Gateway PGA Golf Professional of the Year. Official start times will
be announced in the coming weeks. For planning purposes, the meeting will take place in the AM with the
option for golf (weather permitting) and the awards dinner will take place in the evening. We look forward
to having you at both of these important events.

Employment “Chips”
Employment Chips! – Please enjoy this
“Gateway Employment Chips” section of
your email newsletter. Every month I will
be adding to the subjects of these “brief”
articles and hoping to inspire your thought
process regarding your employment and/or
your facility. Please use and expand on the
information to make your employment
more successful!
Staying Relevant – What Can I Do?
PGA Professionals who have been at the same facility, in
the same job, or in similar jobs for most or all of their
entire career struggle with becoming complacent or with
keeping up with the ever changing demands of the
business. This is especially true as careers edge toward
retirement and the hair begins to grey. Staying relevant
and productive is the key to late stage career success. I
would also suggest this is true for ALL professionals
regardless of where we are in our careers. Becoming
complacent, getting in a rut or getting too “comfortable”
in any position or facility can be dangerous. Keeping
things fresh and staying relevant are things we all should
strive to do on a regular basis. Five keys to staying
relevant are:
Take Inventory – Take a fresh look at who you are,
what you have accomplished and where you want to
go next. Be frank and honest in your evaluation and
ask for a third party’s opinion to get a true picture.
Set Goals – Establish specific personal and
professional goals for both the short term (current
year) and long term (e.g. next career move and/or
retirement). Evaluate and measure your progress at
periodic intervals to keep you fresh and moving
forward.
Embrace Education – Learning keeps you up to date
and helps prevent stagnation. The PGA Certified
Professional Program is a tremendous value that
enables you to stay relevant in your specific career
path or a newly desired career path.
Shake Things Up – It is too easy to fall into the trap
of doing things the same way year after year,
especially if it seems to be working. Resist the
natural tendency to be afraid of change. Incorporate
something new in each area of your personal life and
each program area in your job to remain fresh and
vibrant.
Stay Active – Remain active in your association.
Continue to attend meetings, play in tournaments,
and consider serving as a volunteer at the chapter,
section or national level. At any stage of your career
but especially after you have several years under your
belt, you have much to offer. You will have much to
gain by continuing to broaden your network of
professional friends and fellow professionals.
For veteran professionals, age and experience can be
viewed as good or bad in the marketplace. Use these five
keys to stay relevant and make both your age and your
experience work for you. For less experienced
professionals who are earlier in their careers, understand
that staying relevant, never resting on your laurels,
separating yourself from your peers and being on the
cutting edge using fresh, innovative and creative
strategies will serve you well over your entire career.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions
about this information or any other employment related
matters.

PGA HQ NEWS
Over the past 45 days, we
have experienced both the highest
of peaks, with the phenomenal
success of the 96th PGA
Championship at Valhalla Golf
Club; and one of the most
profound challenges, in coming to
the aid of fellow PGA Professionals impacted by the
single-highest round of layoffs in our history. In both
circumstances, our Association has projected dignity,
class and pride.
At Valhalla Golf Club, PGA General Manager
Keith Reese and PGA Head Professional Chris
Hamburger are shining examples of the type of members
who make this Association great, and will allow us to
succeed for years to come. Their tireless efforts, along
with GCSAA Superintendent Roger Meier, and the more
than 100 Kentucky PGA Section Professionals who
volunteered, were what helped establish the 96th PGA
Championship as one for the ages.
The pulsating drama of the PGA Championship
at Valhalla made it what many are calling an instant clas-
sic and a “turning point” for the industry. Television rat-
ings were the highest in five years, with the last two
hours registering as the most viewed broadcast airing in
prime time during the week.
And what a step Rory McIlroy took in winning
his second PGA Championship, back-to-back majors and
joining Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Young Tom
Morris in winning his fourth major by the age of 25. As
the newest Ambassador for PGA Junior League Golf,
Rory truly is an inspiration for golfers of tomorrow.
Our time to celebrate the PGA Championship
was short lived as attention quickly shifted to the Ryder
Cup. Click here to view more.

Where are you going next with your plan to stay conditioned or get in better shape for your golf game?
Maybe it would help to know what’s trending in the fitness world. In an article by the American
College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in October 2013, HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) was
projected to capture the nation’s fitness attention in 2014. The program involves short bursts of
activity followed by short periods of rest or recovery. The exercise programs are usually performed in
less than 30 minutes.
This is something everyone can do at their own level. It could be this simple: run as fast as you can for
one minute and then walk for two minutes. Repeat that program for 15 minutes at a stretch, three times
a week, for a fat blasting exercise. You can do the same workout walking fast for one minute and then
walking slower for one or two minutes.
This type of exercise program takes away the common excuse of “no time” to work out. It’s ideal for a
busy schedule. The number one benefit is that it is efficient. One study concludes you can achieve
more progress in 15 minutes of interval training (done three times a week)
than jogging on a treadmill for one hour. Other HIIT benefits are:
Builds endurance
Burns fat
Increase muscle strength and performance
Great feeling after completing it
An online article by Mercola.com information states, “If you want to do
more, focus on making sure you’re pushing yourself as hard as you can during the two or three weekly
sessions, rather than increasing the frequency. Intensity is key for reaping all the benefits interval train-
ing can offer. To perform it correctly, you’ll want to raise your heart rate to your anaerobic threshold
and to do that, you have to give it you’re all for those 20 to 30 second intervals.”
To have a well-balanced fitness program you still need a balance of high intensity and low intensity
exercise plus rest on certain days and proper nutrition. Ideally, to truly optimize your health, you’ll
want to strive for a varied and well-rounded fitness program that incorporates other types of exercise
such as strength and flexibility training as well. An article found at Peak Fitness.com concludes that,
“without variety, your body will quickly adapt. As a general rule, with weight training, as soon as an
exercise becomes easy to complete, you need to increase the intensity and /or try another exercise to
keep changing your body.”
