FROM THE OFFICERS DESK

I can’t remember a golf season that went faster than 2014! Time sure has flown by and I hope

everyone had a good season at their facilities. We are finishing up our last few events here at

WingHaven, planning for the Holidays, and already budgeting and preparing for 2015!

Speaking of preparing for the future, please remember this is an election year for all Gateway

PGA officers and roles. Nominations must be submitted 30 days in advance of the Fall

Meeting. The Fall Meeting is scheduled for December 8th; please don’t forget to register for

the meeting. I hope that everyone read the announcement from the Section Office in refer-

ence to the Gateway PGA partnering with G/FORE.

Congratulations is due to the Gateway PGA, as well as all Golf Professionals that supported this year’s PGA Golf

Day Marathon. $41,000 was raised for various charities. I have sincerely enjoyed supporting this outreach program

over the last 3 seasons and hope that more PGA Professionals latch on to this great cause. Job well done to Jon

DePriest of Sunset Hills; Jon was the leading fundraiser with just over $12,500!

An IHSA Regional Championship was held at Hickory Ridge Golf Center on October 7th.

PGA Professional Michael Day called me to confirm a ruling he was making.

A player had lifted and marked his ball on the putting green. He replaced his ball and lifted

the marker. The ball was at rest when a gust of wind moved it a few feet. The player

then picked up the ball and placed it back on the original spot. At this point he was advised

that he may have proceeded incorrectly.

Michael correctly ruled that he should return the ball to the spot where the ball came to rest as a result of being

moved by the gust of wind. The player also incurred a one stroke penalty for moving his ball in play Rule 18-2. If

he had not replaced the ball and putted from where he moved the ball he would have incurred a two stroke penalty

(the general penalty under Rule 18). So the fellow competitor that advised him he may be proceeding incorrectly

saved him one shot.

To find the reason the ball is played from that spot we need to go to the definition section of the Rules of Golf. The

last sentence of the definition of an outside agency states "Neither wind or water is an outside agency". That means

Rule 18-1 Ball Moved by an Outside Agency does not apply and the ball is played from the spot it came to rest as a

result of the wind gust.

A special thank you to Kevin Schaeffer, PGA and the wonderful staff at Annbriar Golf Club. Kevin and his team

put on a wonderful show for our PGA Golf Day Celebration and Check Presentation. On Monday, October 6th,

our top performing Gateway PGA Professionals invited their donors and supporters for a day of golf, food, and

philanthropy. In 2014, PGA Golf Day in the Gateway was led by Jon DePriest of Sunset Hills Country Club. Jon

was honored with a plaque for his commitment and dedication to raising over $12,500 for our local charities. In

the end, over $30,000 was given out to charities that included: Ranken Jordan – A Pediatric Bridge Hospital, Hos-

pice of Southern Illinois, Kids Harbor, Quincy Area Golf In-Schools Program, and the Gateway PGA REACH

Foundation. In addition, nearly $3000 was raised towards Jr Golf and the Gateway PGA Education fund. Way to

go Gateway PGA!

Missouri Golf Day was pulled together in conjunction with the Governor’s

Conference on Tourism. In 2011, the Gateway PGA helped lead an economic

impact study to show the benefits that golf plays with the state’s economy.

The relationship is vital in facing the ongoing challenges that face golf. The

findings were eye opening and include:

The size of Missouri’s direct golf economy is approximately $888.6

million

Missouri’s golf industry supported nearly 21,000 jobs with wage income

of $485.1 million

Golf revenues represent ¾ of the combined revenues of all other major

spectator sports combined. (football,

baseball, hockey, auto racing, horse racing, soccer, etc..)

Missouri generated an estimated $157.4 million in golf tourism a year

The total amount of charitable giving attributed to the game of golf in

Missouri is over $25.2 million a year

On October 7th, Nathan Charnes, PGA and WingHaven Country Club

provided a wonderful venue in which 16 teams celebrated golf in Missouri

while raising a few thousand dollars for our Foundation. We continue to build

relationships with the Department of Tourism while convincing the state of the importance that PGA Professionals

play on our state’s economy. Save the date for 2015 as Missouri Golf Day moves to the Lake of the Ozarks on Oc-

tober 13 at the Lodge at the Four Seasons.

GROWTH OF THE GAME

PGA Golf Day Reflection

Thank you to all the PGA Professionals who participated in PGA Golf Day this year. It’s amaz-

ing that in only three years we’ve raised almost $200,000 for local charities and growth of the

game. A special thank you to Mike Suhre, Kevin Corn, and Jon DePriest for all their hard work

and dedication… and to the Business Bank of St. Louis for their generous support of PGA Golf

Day.

Foundation Instruction Opportunities

The Gateway PGA has teamed up with the Parkway-Rockwood School Districts and their

Community Ed Program to bring golf to their after school programs. We will be looking for PGA Professionals to

teach after school golf programs that last for 6 weeks, each week meeting for 1 hour. Programs are offered at differ-

ent schools from October 2014 – May 2015. All Fall programs have been filled, but Winter and Spring school pro-

grams are still available.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis offers introduction to golf programs to kids at many of their area Club

locations. We are starting again with programming in 2 weeks at four Clubs: Herbert Hoover Club, Adams Park

Club, O’Fallon Club, and Twillman Elementary Club. Each program needs at least 1 PGA Professional to teach a 5-

week class for one hour each week. Programs start the week of October 20th.

For all of the above opportunities, PGA Professionals will be compensated for their time and instruction. Addition-

ally, the Gateway PGA will provide a curriculum to follow and all the equipment needed. If you are interested in

making a few dollars and sharpening your teaching skills, contact Ali Wells for more info and to sign up.

Expanding the Equipment Rental Program

Starting in 2015, the Gateway PGA Equipment Rental Program will start offering different and better ways for you

and your facility to participate in player development/growth of the game opportunities. More details will be com-

ing later.

Sneak Peak – facilities will have the ability to partner with the GPGA at different levels to receive special equipment

and Player Development opportunities.

Reminder!

The second Allied Associations Summit is slated for Monday, November 10th at Forest Hills Golf Club and will

feature prominent guests such as USGA President Thomas J. O’Toole, Jr., Pete Bevacqua – CEO, PGA of America,

Tony D’Errico - Vice President of the Club Managers Association of America , and Bill Maynard – Golf Course Su-

perintendents Association of America National Board Member, to discuss industry-wide issues and how Allied As-

sociations can work together in these efforts. The summit is open for Professionals to attend for $50. An important

item to note is that all proceeds from the Summit will go towards joint initiatives and programming aimed at grow-

ing the game of golf across the Gateway Section. Join us for a very valuable, informative, and charitable opportuni-

ty.

The Gateway Junior Tour Fall series is in full swing. With 3 events already in the books there has been no letup

in the competiveness of the juniors. The fall series started off at Lockhaven on a great golf course on a beautiful

day. Lockhaven is always a great host and a great stop for the Junior Tour.

The next stop was at Crescent Farms and we had a full house with all divisions playing. The Junior Development

Tour on The Colt Course and the 9 and 18 Divisions on the Stallion course. Crescent Farms always provides the

juniors with a great test of golf.

The next fall event was at Fox Run Golf Club. To say that the Juniors were excited to play Fox Run would be an

understatement. We again had a full field with all Divisions playing and were at capacity (due to day light). All

the excitement was justified as the Juniors were treated to a tour like feel with the quality of the golf course, staff

and to have a great sponsor golf giving away towels and balls as tee gifts.

Thank you to all the courses and to our sponsor Callaway golf for their continued support of the

We do have 2 events left on our fall schedule listed below please let any of your Juniors know that the fall season

General Managers, Superintendents and Allied Association Leaders in a Summit dedicated to discussing golf

Club in Chesterfield, MO. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. for registered guests and the Summit will officially commence

Employment “Chips”

Please enjoy this “Gateway Employment

Chips” section of your email newsletter.

Every month I will be adding to the

subjects of these “brief” articles and

hoping to inspire your thought process

regarding your employment and/or your

facility. Please use and expand on the

information to make your employment

more successful!

Resumes and Cover Letters 101 - As we enter the “hiring

season” I thought it would be a good time to offer some basic tips on resumes and cover letters. When new opportunities come available there are definitely some fundamental things you should be doing to put your best foot forward when applying. Here are some bullet point reminders. In general: Resumes and cover letters are marketing tools for

you as a prospective candidate. You should “custom-fit” both items to each job

where you apply based on your research of the position and the employer.

Research what the employer is seeking in their “ideal candidate” to identify the employer’s “hot buttons”.

Then tailor your cover letter and resume accordingly to highlight how your background, experience and accomplishments will push the employer’s “hot buttons”. Never focus on what you want, rather focus on what they need and want!

Ultimate goal of resumes and cover letters, demonstrate how the places you worked are better for you having been there!

Cover Letters: A critical “first impression” of your communication

skills and personality Each cover letter must be tailored to each job, each

employer. More flexibility to explain things that a resume can’t;

use the narrative format to explain how you hit the employer’s “ideal candidate hot buttons”.

Clearly indicate why you are applying, why the position is of great interest.

“Sells” the employer by identifying your successes that parallel the employer’s needs.

Addresses “red flags” that may disqualify you: i.e. out of the area candidate; currently out of work; gaps in employment; seeming to be a “job hopper”; taking a step backwards in position title; change in career path, etc.

Show enthusiasm, passion and desire then wrap up by asking for an interview.

Strive to keep to one page or less. Proofread voraciously to ensure absolutely no

mistakes including typos, misspellings or grammatical errors.

Resumes: Begin with a “Resume Summary” or “Career Profile”

that is “custom fit” to each position. Your “Summary” will focus on your areas of strength

that can benefit the employer in his operation. Avoid “Objectives” that talk about what you want;

the focus should be on how you can do what that employer wants!

The bullet points for each work experience should NOT read like a job description that lists just duties and responsibilities.

The bullet points for each work experience SHOULD focus on accomplishments, achievements or unique responsibility areas.

Avoid including dates that reveal your age; the most typical are including year elected to PGA membership or year of college graduation.

Use statistics whenever possible to quantify your accomplishments especially when increasing rounds, memberships, revenues, sales, tournament participation, etc. anything that improves the bottom line.

Usually (but there are exceptions) no need in your work experience to go back more than 3 jobs or 10 years…anything farther back is typically not relevant.

As with cover letters, proofread very closely to eliminate all mistakes.

Final Word of Advice: Your cover letter and resume are never “done”. You can’t just change the name and address on the cover letter and send with your “final” resume version. You don’t need to start from scratch with each one but you definitely must customize each with a focus on the specific wants and needs of each particular employer. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions about this information or any other employment related matters.

Brought To You by Optimal Lifestyles, Inc.

Many of my clients are asking about how to reconfigure their routines, since we’re in a seasonal

change. I believe most of us are facing that question. Different temperatures, weather conditions, and

changing daylight can affect our body clocks. For some, their energy level slows down this time of

year. Others are already jumping from fall to thoughts about how best to navigate the winter months.

Most of us are wondering, “How did we get to October so fast?”

For various reasons, people fall out of routines and let go of good habits during the summer months.

Once school starts, it’s time to get back on track or start a new track.

Some tips to jumpstart your fall fitness:

Identify a goal and write it down. The initial goal could be general, such as, get in shape and stay

on track through the winter months.

Then make goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time sensitive. In this way,

you know when you achieve a goal and can celebrate your success.

Choose a workout you know you’ll do regularly. If you hate running, don’t make that your goal.

Love swimming? Put it at the top of your list.

Then devise a plan that works well in your daily schedule. And always have a backup plan in case

things get busy or you’re traveling. That way, you can feel better about yourself and what you are

trying to achieve.

Simply put, it looks like this: plan, organize, and establish goals. If you need assistance putting

together a program for the fall or at any time, contact Optimal Lifestyles at 314-984-0592 and Barb or

Catherine will get you started.

As a member of the PGA Rules of Golf Committee, I receive many inquiries about the

application of the Rules of Golf. Recently I received a call from fellow Gateway PGA Section

member Jeff Escott, the PGA head professional at Persimmon Woods Golf Club in Weldon Springs, Missouri.

Jeff informed me that the golf committee at his facility was meeting that evening to resolve a difficult situation. A

question was raised after the close of a competition during a recent event, and Jeff wanted to be sure the discussion

and resolution of the matter was in accordance with the Rules of Golf.

Our phone conversation focused on the provisions of Rule 34-1b and its first sentence, which states, “In stroke play

a penalty must not be rescinded, modified or imposed after the competition has closed.”

With this in mind, the Committee also had to look at the four exceptions under this Rule, in particular 34-1b (iii),

which tells us, “A penalty of disqualification must be imposed after the completion has closed if a competitor

returned a score for any hole lower than actually taken (Rule 6-6d) for any reason other than failure to include a

penalty that, before the competition closed, he did not know he had incurred.” Click here to continue reading.
