Morton Village Hall Quiz, November 15th 2014 Another good quiz was held in the Village Hall in November, thanks to the quizmasters
Dave and Neil. It was an enjoyable evening as usual and it was good to see a few new faces.
Thanks also to those who help set the tables out, wash up and generally clear up afterwards.
Many people get involved with helping and it makes it a real community event. Also thanks
to those who supplied the raffle prizes and Mandy who made sure every one bought a ticket! Look out for the advert for next one in April. Hope to see you there! Thanks Lucille.
New Christmas Tree in Morton After several years without an illuminated Christmas tree, thanks to the Youngman
Family for donating and planting one this year, support was given from the Village Hall and the Parish council.

This is the start of the Christian New Year. I always think if you add ure to the festival it spells Adventure. This certainly gives a good idea of the week by week count down of the travels of Mary & Joseph leading to the birth of Jesus in the stable
and the shepherd’s journey to find them. Later on the kings also experience a bit of an adventure also seeking out the
baby. The congregation also travels through the many different services at this
time of year with the village school’s carol service, Christingle on Christmas Eve and later that evening the Bethleham Service. On the 5th
December the village community concert took place and what a great event it
was with many talented performers. The Guides started off with a recorder
playing version of Jingle Bells and festival songs. Margaret read a poem about a Christmas Stocking for a new Baby. The school choir gave us two popular modern carols including the little drummer boy. Once more Daniel Ratcliffe played Violin
accompanied by his tutor Jane. It was noticeable the great advancement Daniel
has made since his performance last year. Our organist Gwenda accompanied
by husband Terry sang the 1914 song including ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Put Christ in
Christmas.’ Our curate Phaedra did a version of Joyce Grenfell’s comic version
concerning ladies dancing together. This was followed by an hilarious version of
14 days at scout camp when Akala would feed them a different food item each
day-ending in a dose of syrup of figs! This was lead by their scout leader
dressed as a Christmas tree. Our curate Kevin recited a poem about the
donkey’s complaint at being in the stable. Mike Cooney ended the evening with
a prayer and blessing. During the start of the evening refreshments and stalls
raised £240.61. A huge thanks to everyone who contributed. Ann Lewis

The Gainsborough Group for people with Parkinson’s rewarded in the Lloyds Bank Community Fund The Gainsborough Group for People with Parkinson’s has been awarded £500
by the Lloyds Bank Community Fund 2014. Following votes from members
of the public, the Group has been awarded a grant from Lloyds Bank to
enable it to continue doing good work in the community. The Gainsborough Group is made up of both people with Parkinson’s and
their carers. It exists to provide mutual support and friendship for anyone
dealing with the disease, The Group meets in Morton Village Hall on the last
Tuesday of each month at 10:30 for refreshments and a chat. Activities
include a regular exercise class for members which is subsidised by group
funds, the occasional speaker and some outings throughout the year. Money
is also set aside to provide individual grants to members for the purchase of
equipment which should improve their quality of life. The money provided by the Lloyds Bank Community Fund will help to
ensure that the exercise class can continue to run for the foreseeable future
and enable us to consider grants for members for the purchase of equipment
in the next financial year. The provision of the award will enable the group to provide continuity of
provision in the immediate future and will ensure that, in Gainsborough,
no-one has to face Parkinson’s alone. The Lloyds Bank Community Fund was set up to help local people across
England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man
to have a positive impact at the heart of their community by giving grants to
1,400 local good causes in 350 communities. Community Group: Ron Cawte, Phone: 01427615236 Lloyds Bank: Donna McGrory, Four Communications ,

Volunteer Required To help ensure that we can continue to distribute this newsletter in a timely
manner we are seeking a volunteer who would be willing to deputise for the
distribution coordinator during any planned absences. The role takes up to 4
hours per month usually between the 23rd & 27th but can be organised to suit
the volunteer. It involves sorting the newsletters, which are delivered in boxes
to your home address by the printer, into the various packs required by each
volunteer distributor and then delivering the packs to the volunteers
throughout Morton. The role also includes the posting of individual newsletters
to the flats on Vanessa Drive. If you think you could help please contact David Bew on 01427 610395 for more
information. Full training will be provided and we anticipate that your services
would be required no more than three times each year.
St Barnabas Hospice It was lovely to see so many of you at our annual Light up a Life Service, at the United Reform Church, Gainsborough. This presented a wonderful opportunity to take time to remember and reflect upon loved ones no longer with us and also to move forward with hope. The service was followed by a lantern walk to our `Tree of Life ‘in the Market Place. Although rather windy and somewhat cold, the rain and snow held off and we were able to enjoy readings and a carol at the tree, before returning to the United Reformed church for warming refreshments. I would like to thank the Mayor of Gainsborough, Councillor Mick Tinker and the Gainsborough Town Council for allowing their tree to be the St Barnabas Gainsborough Tree of Life and for supporting our Light up a Life service. Thank you also to the Mayor for choosing St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice as one of his charities whilst in office. Thank you to the Chairman of West Lindsey District Council, Councillor Malcolm Parish for joining us at our service, supporting St Barnabas and for the kind donation in support of the Hospice from West Lindsey District Council. My thanks and appreciation also to Reverend Poucher, Reverend Dyke, Pat Goucher, all our readers and helpers and everyone who came along to Light up a Life and for their continued support for the work of St Barnabas in Gainsborough and surrounding local communities. An afternoon of Coffee & Carols was enjoyed at the George Henderson Lodge. As well as delicious refreshments guests were entertained by the choir from Morton Trentside Primary school; many thanks to both the staff and pupils for joining us and for their beautiful singing and musical accompaniment. The next Coffee Morning at the George Henderson Lodge will take place Thursday 15
th January 2015, 10am – 12noon. If you are able to
donate any cakes, and if you have any unwanted Christmas gifts to support future events in the area then please do bring them along. We will have our regular cake stall, Bric a Brac and books, St Barnabas Giftware and more! Everyone is most welcome to come along and join us. With sincere good wishes to you all for 2015. 100th Anniversary of the Morton Gymes Disaster - 19th February 2014. In October 1914 over 4,000 Yorkshire
Territorials came to Gainsborough to
carry out training before they were sent
to France in April 1915. They were bil-
leted with local families. On Friday,
February 19th 1915, the town was
shocked when seven members of "D"
Company of the 4th Battalion, King's
Own Yorkshire Light Infantry were
drowned. They had gone to one of the
gymes (ponds) in Morton, to practice
raft building. A raft was built consisting
of tarpaulins filled with straw, on a
framework of planks tied together with ropes. Estimates of the number of soldiers on board the raft
when it tipped over were disputed, some claimed that it was up to 40. Within seconds dozens of men
were in the cold, deep water, wearing their heavy uniforms and boots, struggling to survive. That morning there were many acts of bravery by individual soldiers who saved the lives of drowning
colleagues. Private Creighton, 19 years old, from Batley was brought back to life by artificial respira-
tion. Former Leeds solicitor, Lance Corporal Arthur R. Chorley and Lance Corporal Chapelle had seen
the disaster unfold from the bank, they jumped in and were credited with saving several men. Another
rescuer, Lance Corporal George Sykes whose brother was a Batley doctor, later wrote, "I got my pack
and my coat off, dived into the water and tried to save the poor chaps. It was awful! We could not tell
who was drowning or who was wanting help, and we got two out just in time. We had a job to get them
round, but we succeeded after a time." Private Willie Barber saved two from the middle of the pond.
Sergeant Charles Hemingway and Private Walter Gatenby also helped in the rescue and only left the
water when exhausted after saving three lives. Initially five bodies were recovered but after a roll call it
was found that there was still two missing. Privates Jim Howgate and Sam Hough searched the water
for several hours to recover the bodies. Later in the afternoon two more bodies were recovered The bodies were taken to the stables at the nearby Crooked Billet Pub. The next day an inquest was held
in Morton School and by this time grieving relatives had travelled to the town from their home towns of
Dewsbury, Wakefield, Batley and Harrogate. The jury headed by Morton builder J.R. Fox viewed the
bodies and visited the gyme. Later the bodies were taken to Holy Trinity Institute Hall, in the area of
Gainsborough where they had been billeted, to lie overnight. The next day they were taken back to their
home towns for burial accompanied wreaths paid for by the townspeople. The local legend was that the
gymes were bottomless and questions were asked about why the pond was used when they could have
used the nearby, much safer, shallow lake at Sir Hickman Bacon's, Thonock Park. The verdict of the jury was "Accidental death" but they commented on the inexperience of the officer in
charge, Captain Harold Hirst and his men. They said the raft was too small to carry the number of men
and there was inadequate provision for life-saving. They commended the efforts of those who had made brave efforts to save their comrades. Within days of the trage-dy the K.O.Y.L.I.'s were removed from Gainsborough to York
and were replaced by members of the West Yorkshire Regi-
ment. By April 1915 they were in the trenches in Northern
France. In June Captain Hirst was shot and killed by a sniper.
He is buried in Bois Grenier Cemetery in France. Later in the
war Private Barber was killed in action on the Somme and
Lance Corporal Chorley (by then promoted to Captain) died
from wounds in 1918, both are buried in France. Sergeant Sykes
died later from wounds and is buried in Slaithwaite near Hud-
dersfield. The Friends of Gainsborough Cemeteries and Chapel intention is to have a plaque made
to remember the seven soldiers to be placed in St. Paul's Church, Morton, the parish where they died.
Sign up to a winter warmer of savings with Lincolnshire Energy Switch Scheme
Sign up to a winter warmer of savings on gas and electricity bills for 2015 with the
Lincolnshire Energy Switch Scheme. The latest opportunity to join the scheme starts today (Tuesday 2 December) and could bring
you hundreds of pounds of savings – freeing up extra cash that will help pay for the cost of Christmas or to put towards improvements for your home next year. In a recent auction the average saving per household to take up their offer was a huge £234. Nearly 5,000 Lincolnshire households have registered to join forces to get better deals from
energy suppliers, making the county’s residents one of the biggest groups to tackle the energy
companies for better tariffs. Households are again invited to register for the scheme, organised by Lincolnshire County
Council, West Lindsey District Council, South Kesteven District Council, East Lindsey
District Council, North Kesteven District Council, Lincoln City Council and Community Lincs administered by the UK’s leading collective switching expert, iChoosr Ltd. To register submit your details at www.west-lindsey.gov.uk/switch. If you do not have internet access, a friend or family member can do this on your behalf. Alternatively visit the
Guildhall in Gainsborough with a copy of your annual gas or electric bill. If you cannot register online and have no one that can register for you, you can call the free
phone number 0800 048 8439. The number is open 8am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and is
solely for registration. Once households have registered their interest, the energy suppliers will be invited to compete
with their best offers. The scheme is free for households to join and there is no obligation to take up the winning
supplier’s tariff offer. All can register, whether you rent your home or own it, whether you are on dual fuel, electric
only, pay monthly or quarterly or have a prepayment meter. And you don’t have to live in
Lincolnshire. The scheme is open to all those in the UK so let friends and relatives know about it. Cllr Owen Bierley, chair of the council’s Prosperous Communities Committee, said: “Shopping
around for a good deal on energy bills has never been more popular and understandably we all
seek to make savings that can add up. “Registering online or calling the freephone number is a simple solution to what can be a time
consuming process of changing energy provider. “Therefore we recommend residents choose this hassle free option which has no obligation. If
you register you are offered a deal after the auction and it’s a simple choice then whether to
take it or not. “The more people who register, the more interested energy suppliers are securing them as
customers and the better the deal they offer. But you have to register to have a chance to take
up the saving so register today and tell your friends, family and neighbours about the scheme
too.”
