for The RelectorThe long-awaited Battle
Ground Community Garden project should be completed in the next 7-10 days, in time for local gardeners to begin plant-ing fall and winter vegetables.
After the delay of initial con-struction of the garden beds due to the long and wet spring and early summer, a large number of volunteers and local busi-nesses have teamed up to grade hundreds of yards of compost, top soil and fertilizer into the soil behind the Battle Ground Cinemas. The raised beds will soon be completed and only a few items are left to be inished.
Despite a long list of dona-tions, both in cash and kind, the organizers are still short of what they need to complete the project. Recently a tool and supply shed was donated, which was then installed and painted by Community Garden volunteers. But there are three important main items that the project needs to purchase and install before the garden will be considered complete.
First, the ADA Wheelchair Ramp from the parking lot to
the gardens needs to be poured and inished, an irrigation sys-tem needs to be purchased and installed, and a security camera needs to be purchased and in-stalled as well.
“We need about $2,000 to inish our work and to make the gardens ready for the commu-nity to use,” said Liz Cerveny, Director of the North Coun-ty Community Food Bank. “We’ve been thrilled at the gen-erosity of local businesses who have provided much of the soil, compost and materials we’ve needed up to now, but have some inal hard costs we need to deal with.”
When completed, there will be 20-30 in-ground raised gar-den beds in 10 x 20 foot, 4 x 16 foot, and 4 x 8 foot sizes. A very moderate fee will be charged for the access to a garden bed and gardeners will be asked to donate one row of their produce to the Food Bank as a condition of their being able to use a plot.
There will also be raised-bed gardening classes, led by Mas-ter Gardeners or mentors, for people who have little garden-ing experience.
“Our goal is to get every
plot used,” said Russell Brent, of the Mill Creek Pub, an early and active proponent of the gar-den project. Any club, organization, company or individual interest-ed in helping raise the needed funds, purchasing garden beds, or donating supplies or ser-vices, should contact Liz Cer-veny at the Food Bank at ex-ecutivedirector@nccfoodbank.

for The RelectorWestside Concrete Accesso-
ries was founded in 1988 on the simple idea of making it easy for a concrete contractor to get everything they needed deliv-ered to the job site, promptly.
It was a simple idea that came from the original owner, Marty Russell, coming from his years as a concrete contrac-tor and his professed frustration with having to drive all over the Portland Metro area to pick up the supplies he needed to com-plete jobs.
The company slogan “What-ever it Takes” refers to their business ethic of promising to provide excellent customer ser-vice, inding solutions to unique forming and concrete pouring situations and helping custom-ers learn about and locate new products to help their business grow.
Westside Concrete Acces-sories features a complete line of concrete: forms, tools, hard-ware, accessories, additives, stains, acids, and colors, every-thing you need for a success-ful job. Most of their staff has worked in the industry and they strive to continually learn about and promote new products and the lastest techniques in con-crete processes.
Westside also offers power tool and equipment repair, rebar fabrication, stamp rental, equip-ment rental to licensed contrac-
Concrete-A-Palooza: A festival of all things concretetors, used equipment sales, help with ICF plan development and takeoffs, and contractor refer-rals. Hand, stamp and power tools, chemical sealers, cures, as well as cement, grout and patch material are all available through Westside, and are listed on their extensive website www.wescontacc.com/htool.html. The list spans the industry-relat-ed alphabet from anchor bolts to zip ties.
One of their current projects involves working on the Sell-wood Bridge in Portland, but they are also involved in smaller projects in Clark County, and can handle “anything from cracked driveways, or founda-tion work, to major building projects,” says General Man-ager Matt Jeffries.
Additionally, Westside spon-sors the “Concrete-A-Palooza” every two years for local con-tractors, subcontractors and homeowners who are interested in either hiring concrete contrac-tors or in doing their own proj-ects. The event feature vendors displaying new products, new techniques and new tools and processes used in the industy.
Concrete-A-Palooza 2012 will be held at the company’s Vancouver facility at 11412 NE 76th Street, on Aug. 2, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The gathering will also include a pancake break-fast and a barbecue lunch for participants and industry profes-sionals. The 2010 show was at-
tended by 300 plus individuals and Westside expects more this year.
There will be displays of decorative concrete, including stamped, colored and overlay processes and products, prod-uct demos and training given by industry experts and equipment vendors, and displays of other industry-related new products for professional contractors. Homeowners are welcome as well, to get their questions an-swered about concrete processes and products they can use to im-prove their outdoor living space.
“With the economy picking up, it’s time for contractors and subcontractors to tool up again, there’s a backlog of work that sat idle during the last year or two due to the weak economy, but now things are changing, there are a lot of new products and techniques out there and we want to be a channel for jump-starting the local concrete indus-try,” said Jeffries.
AT A PAST “Concrete-A-Palooza,’’ a concrete stamping demo was offered to those in attendance at Westside Concrete Accessories’ Vancouver facility.
