News from the Garden

Dear Parents and friends of GIS,

September has been and gone and whata wet month it was! However, thetorrential rain hasn‟t been able todampen the spirits of the children atGarden as it has been an extremelybusy month for all concerned: SherlockHolmes and his faithful sidekick Dr.Watson acted for the Secondarystudents, Year 4 looked inside theHuman body and everyone joinedtogether for Maths day.

The school has continued to developand has recently been accredited byCambridge International Examinationsas a licensed examinations centre.

The end of this month also sees theintroduction of the „Home-SchoolAgreement‟. This is one more way thatwe aim to encourage a positivepartnership with parents that isimportant to promoting the school‟svision of “...empowering pupils to

develop their full potential.” Your childwill bring home a copy today that needsto be read, signed and returned toschool on Monday 1st October. Yourchild‟s class teacher or form tutor willalso sign it and then provide you with acopy.

Please read and enjoy the rest of thismonth‟s newsletter. As always, if thereis anything that you wish to discussfurther please do not hesitate to contactme.

Warmest regards,

On Wednesday 26th September Year 4 went to Chulalongkorn hospital to havea look at 'The Human Body' exhibition. They were able to see the insides andoutsides of a human and find out howall the parts fit together. They werefascinated by the lungs and heart exhibitand were equally intrigued by getting upclose to a real skeleton for the first time. The local university students andgeneral public also attending were

impressed by the children's knowledge of the bones in the body. The childrenenjoyed the trip a great deal and learned a lot about the human anatomy. Forsure they will certainly never forget this educational visit.

On Thursday 20th

September GIS pupils were treated to amemorable performance fromPerformance Exchange Theatre Companywho came to us direct from London. Atroupe of three actors in all, Daniel Foleyand father and son duo, Nigel and MaxGilmore, had Secondary pupils spell-bound with their stunning portrayal of aSherlock Holmes’ murder mystery. After the performance, the actorsanswered pupil questions about theauthor of Sherlock Holmes, ArthurConan Doyle. Pupils learned that thewriter was a doctor, which gave hisstories added intrigue. After this session, pupils enthusiasticallyjoined Daniel in some voice ‘warm-up’activities (for the stage) after which heasked for a volunteer from the audienceto sing for us. With someencouragement from Mr. Fowler, Year 11pupil, Emily came forward to treat uswith a delightful song. Our visitingperformers were very impressed, commenting that they had been

upstaged by Emily’s thoroughly

captivating voice!Once again, Garden pupils were full ofcuriosity about the lives and careers ofthe actors, some pupils expressing theirambition to become actors while othersstayed back to talk one-on-one to them. They discovered that Daniel and Nigelare involved in both television andtheatre in England. Max, however, hasjust finished a law degree, so acting ishis hobby, for now.Year 10 English were privileged to haveDaniel join them in class before theperformance. Jet lagged, Daniel hadarrived at GIS two hours before starttime! Year 10s were subsequentlytreated to a private reading of an extractfrom Charles Dickens’ Hard Times anddiscovered the actor’s love of his works. As you can see from the photographs, pupils thoroughly enjoyed theirexposure to the life of a professionalactor and the activities that followed.
