Spotlight

Joseph Del’Giodice

Propota, intern Kelly Fairfield, intern Anna Norcia, and Clinic Supervisor Joseph Del’Giodice

Joe has been an Eastern School Clinical Supervisor since the summer of 2012. He describes his first day of observation as

follows, “I stepped into the clinic, and watched, and listened, and absolutely loved every second of it. I counted the minutes for

a couple of weeks to pass and my own shift to begin.”

An acupuncturist, herbalist, and naturopath, Joe was born and raised in Jersey City and for the past fourteen years has been

living and practicing in Hoboken, focusing on whole body health, geriatrics, musculoskeletal care, and natural food education.

Having been a student of herbalist priest Jeffrey Yuen, and a long time student and apprentice of Master Western Herbalist

David Simon, his lifelong fascination with health and longevity began at age 7. That year at Christmas, he received his first

book on nutrition, a gift from his brother-in-law. Joe didn’t know what all the words meant, but eventually learned, and read

that book so many times that it literally fell apart. His introduction to acupuncture came also as a young boy, when President

Nixon went to China. He recalls, “There was a news report that one of his aides had emergency surgery and the doctors used

acupuncture during the operation. I asked my father what acupuncture was and he told me that doctors place needles in your

body when you are sick to help you get well. Of course I didn’t realize that years later I would become an acupuncturist.” Joe

has long modeled his practice after the 19th century physio-medicalist country doctors, when patients were like family and a

physician would tend you when you’re sick but would also help raise a barn, fix a roof, cook a meal, or preach in a frontier

church.

When not in the kitchen preparing arugula salad, broccoli rabe, or making a fresh green juice, Joe can be found cross country

skiing, surfing a longboard, or singing and playing guitar as part of the popular acoustic combo, The Tribe of Uncles. If you don’t

see him in any of these places, stop in and say hello at Hudson Healing Arts in Hoboken.

Some of his favorite quotes:

“Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you. “ “Love turns work into rest.” - St. Teresa of Avila

“The mature man lives quietly, does good privately, assumes personal responsibility, treats others with friendliness and

courtesy.” - Kenneth Rexroth

“When the wave comes, best not to fight.” - Sal the Surfing Barber

Acupuncture Success Stories

“In 2011, I was suffering from severe knee pain and on certain occasions I would limp due to

the discomfort. I visited my primary doctor and after the exam, pain medicine was prescribed

and a referral was given to visit an orthopedic specialist. I never made the call to the

orthopedic specialist because I was afraid he would suggest surgery, so I decided to do some

research and found Acupuncture. I remember making my first appointment in November of

2011 at the Eastern School of Acupuncture and after a few consecutive treatments I started

feeling better. Today, I am pain free and do not require any pain medicine or surgery. I

am very fortunate I found Acupuncture because not only has it helped me with my knee, it has

helped my sinus and back issues. I tell everyone my story and I highly

recommend Acupuncture to treat any ailment one may be experiencing.” – Jennifer

Manderichio

“I remember not knowing what acupuncture was until I started working at the Eastern School

of Acupuncture. It was until one of the clinic interns at the time, Joan Spitz, who is now an

alumnus of the school suggested that I come into clinic for treatments. I did not know what to

expect but I was curious to try it out. At first I was nervous just by looking at the needles and

thinking “What did I get myself into?”, but I remember Joan being there to comfort me and

assure me that I would feel so relaxed after this treatment. After many health questions and

palpations, Joan and the clinic supervisor agreed on the points they would focus on to help me

with my anemia and lack of energy. I recall falling asleep on the massage table and feeling so

relaxed. I did not need to make frequent doctor visits or take medicine with awful side effects

anymore. Overall, Acupuncture improved my health and made me feel like a brand new person

after every treatment. I would recommend anyone to try Acupuncture at least once in their

life!” – Erika Burgos
