Keynote sessionThe keynote session welcomed hundreds of participants and encompassed three co-located events: African Construction and Totally Concrete Expo, The National African Federation for the Building Industry’s (NAFBI) National Transformation Leadership Conference and the African Smart Cities Summit.
Thehottopicduringthekeynotegovernmentroundtablewasconstructionindustrytransformation.OfficialssuchasTheExecutive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, MEC Jacob Mamabolo from the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development and Skhumbuzo Macozoma, CEO of SANRAL, joined the strategic discussion. The focus was on creating a favorable regulatory climate for transformation and the end goal of empowering small to medium sized contractors, women in construction and other underprivileged groups to the forefront for opportunities and projects.
I listened to the Mayor of Johannesburg and to the MEC of the Gauteng Department of infrastructure Development at the keynote session and i am now excited that as a
woman-owned company we are finally going to have the right space in the industry.

This year the African Construction and Totally Concrete Expo co-located with the Facilities Management Expo to facilitate a greater understanding and learning between the construction industry and the management of buildings. The great synergies betweenthetwoindustriesmeantthatvisitorsofbothexposbenefitedfromthesuperbopportunitytonetworkwithconstructionprofessionals involved in all stages of the planning, construction and maintenance of buildings and were able to explore exciting new technologies.
The African Smart Cities Summit addressed some of the critical questions and thinking around what a smart city means in an African context where imperatives such as job creation and skills development share equal place with technology and communication concerns.
Attended by key stakeholders within the industry, city visionaries from Durban, Nelson Mandela Bay, Cape Town and the City ofJoburgsharedtheir thinkingon issuesofmobility,electricvehicles, thedefinitionofasmartcity, insuranceandbuildinginformation management and changing business models in the face of an increasingly connected world.
In addition, the African Smart Cities Summit was pleased to host the launch of the Rosslyn Hub, a R3 billion development in Rosslyn near Tshwane that brings together commercial, industrial and residential elements in an estate which is designed to encourage better lives for all its residents.
The African Construction Awards Gala Dinner, powered by the National African Federation for the Building Industry (NAFBI), recognised key players in the construction sector. The Awards highlighted the year-round pursuit of excellence that is demonstrated through the passion of leading professionals, entrepreneurs and rising stars working in the sector. The prestigious evening and gala dinner was attended by 280 guests.
The judging panel comprised of experts, entrepreneurs and industry leaders with expertise across the following categories: Women in Construction: Young Entrepreneur/Rising Star; Women in Construction Life Time Achievement; Media and Communications Excellence; Project Delivery Excellence; Safety Standards; Transformation and Industry Leaders.
