• A central defender, Terim played for Galatasaray for over a decade and represented Turkey 51 times, 31 of themas captain. He started his coaching career with MKE Ankaragücü and then Göztepe, before he was named assistantto national team boss Sepp Piontek and put in charge of the Under-21s in 1991.

• Appointed Turkey coach in 1993 and led them to EURO '96. They lost all of their games in England, but just gettingto the final tournament, Turkey's first since the 1954 FIFA World Cup, was a major landmark.

• After EURO '96 he returned to Galatasaray, winning four league titles and the 2000 UEFA Cup. Serie A came callingand Terim took charge of Fiorentina and Milan before returning to Galatasaray, but problems behind the scenesbrought about a temporary retirement in 2004.

• Reappointed by Turkey in 2005 following a break from management, Terim – known as 'Imparator' (The Emperor)for his leadership skills – could not guide the team through a 2006 FIFA World Cup play-off against Switzerland.Success followed at UEFA EURO 2008, however, with Terim leading Ay Yıldızlılar (The Crescent-Stars) to thesemi-finals, but he resigned following his side's unsuccessful bid to reach the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

• A fringe player in the Bundesliga, he moved to second division Wolfsburg and again won promotion, subsequentlybecoming a top-flight regular and earning a return to Stuttgart, where he played in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup.

• Joined Köln in 2000 but relegated two years later, prompting a switch to Eintracht, whom he helped into the Bundesligaonly to miss most of the season with cartilage damage; relegation and further injury problems led to retirement in2005.

• Took over Stuttgart's Under-19 side in 2008/09 and became Christian Gross's assistant with the first team in December2009; the following October, replaced Gross as head coach but lasted only two months before making way for BrunoLabbadia, although Keller continued to work for the club as a scout.

• Appointed Schalke's U17 coach in summer 2012, on 16 December that year he stepped up to the senior side followingHuub Stevens' departure.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FCBayern München and Chelsea FC in 2011/12. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a sideprogressed after a home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finalswhen they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home.

• Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 21 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three roundof 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.

• Thirteen ties have gone to penalties, including six finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The first two-leggedtie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, mostrecently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16.

• FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugalin the 2008/09 round of 16, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two gamesalso featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2011/12 round of 16 is the largest margin ofvictory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times.

• Chelsea FC have become the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFAChampions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 thatfeatured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holdersand lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last clubto win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996,1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 monthslater Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
