School districts in Ohio, by law, are not permitted to operate at a deficit,

and only have two options to balance their budgets: reduce costs or

increase revenue. GJPS has made a total of$12 million in permanent cuts

over the last three years to reduce costs. Without additional funding this

year, the district will be required to cut a minimum of $7 million more

before the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.

GJPS has placed a 5.2 mill operating levy on the ballot for Tuesday, May

3, 2011. This levy, Issue 6, equates to $13 per month per $100,000 of

assessed property value and will prevent the additional $7 million or more

in cuts. The outcome of the vote will determine what the school system in

this Gahanna community looks like going forward.

The GJPS Board of Education will take definitive action on the next $7

million or more in reductions after May 3, 2011, due to the following:

The levy outcome on May 3, 2011, will determine if these

    additional cuts are necessary.

The State budget has not been approved (budget approval is

expected sometime in spring 2011, although it has been as late as

July 30th in previous years). GJPS does anticipate the state

reducing funding for the district by at least another 15%. If state

funding is reduced by more than 15% and the levy fails, cuts will

    exceed $7 million.

Proposed legislation to alter some unfunded state mandates (such

as providing all-day kindergarten and reducing class sizes) has

    not been approved.

If the levy passes, our community will continue to see the impact of $12

million in previous cuts made over the last three years. The district is

committed to continuing to find ways to streamline operations while

striving to maintain an excellent, world-class education system - offering

    wonderful opportunities for Gahanna students.

If the levy does not pass, the district must make a minimum of $7

million in additional cuts before the beginning of the 2012-2013 school

year to balance the budget. These cuts are not punitive, but they will

directly impact our students, programs, and the community.
