CONSTANT PRAYER Some of us think within ourselves that “How is constant prayer possi- ble?” It needs too much commitment to our Sadguru, and is a responsi- ble that sometimes we do not want to take it as we assume we cannot do it. When we analyze the natural process of breathing at all time in our life, we do breathe without stopping even for a few moments. How is this possible? This process is a natural, automatic, rhythm in our life. So this is the same tendency we have to bend our mind to about our Sadguru and remembering Him constantly. This is not going to happen overnight. As He says we need Shradha and Saburi for any task to be successful. So be patient and devoted to Him and even if it takes a long time to imbibe this habit, but we will succeed for sure. 1912 7 January Sunday — Shirdi In the morning I got up early and attended the Kakad Arti. Sayin Maharaj looked exceedingly pleased and gave yogic glances. I passed the whole day in a sort of ecstasy. After morning, I, Bapusaheb Jog & Upasani commenced Ranganath Yogavashishta. Then we saw Sayin Maharaj go out & in the interval sat talking with the young Mohamedans that come to the Masjid. One of them recited some verses. The mid-day Arti was late. Sayin Baba commenced a very good tale. He said he had a very good well. The water in it was sky blue and its supply was inexhaustible. Four motas would not empty it, and the fruit grown with the water was inordinately He did not continue the story beyond the point. In the afternoon Dixit read two chapters of Ramayana. Upasani, myself, Ram Maruti and Dixit were present. Then we went to Sayin Baba & attended his stroll. As it was getting dark, he got or rather showed as if, he got angry with the wood-cutter women. At night there was Bhishmas Bhajan & Dixits Ramayan.

In Shri Sai Satcharitra, Sri Sai Baba says I am dependent on him who thinks and hungers after Me and who does not eat anything without first offering it to Me. He, who thus comes to Me, becomes one with Me, just as a river gets to the sea and becomes merged [one] with it. So leaving out pride and egoism and with no trace of them, you should surrender yourself to Me who am seated in your heart." This realization with all pervasiveness will help you at-tain oneness with ME.

Devayani’s Moksha Mantrams Prostration to you Oh Bhagawarn Purusha who by entering into me has awakened my latent power of speech

and who with all his powers revives that of my hand, feet, ears, skin, pranas, etc., Just as the waters of the rains coming down from the skies reach the ocean, prostrations unto all gods reach

Sayeesa. Prostrations again and again. It is kama,(desire) that has acted. It is desire that has acted. It is that which acts. I

do not act. Desire is the agent--not I. Desire is the cause of action--not I.. Here oh kama, here is the oblation offered unto you. Manyu, passion did the act. Prostration unto you! Manyu, passion did the act. It is the passion that acts, --not I. Anger is the actor--not I. Anger is the agent--not I. Here oh Manyu, I offer this oblation unto Manyu !

Saranagati Om ! Tat(That) is Brahma. Om ! That is Vayu(air). Om, that is self, Atma. Om, that is Reality, --satya. Om that is All ! Om that is the Guru !! I bow to that Guru ! He moves within all creatures, in the hearts of all creatures. You are the yajna, sacrifice, the Vashatkara Mantra;

you are Indra, you are Rudra, you are Vishnu, you are Brahma. You are Prajapati, you are That Water, Light, Taste, the immortal Brahman, and the three worlds, Om, Bhu, Bhuwah, Suwah ! Om !

Oh Sri Sai, Sai, that pleases all people, Sai Sai. Sri Sai, Sai, the resort of all people, Sai , Sai. Sri Sai, Sai, the giver of salvation, Sai, Sai. Sri Sai, Sai, be my refuge, Sai, Sai. With my mind I think of the feet of Sri Sainatha. With my lips I praise the feet of Sainatha. With my head, I prostrate at the feet of Sainatha. I seek refuge at the feet of Sainatha. My mother's Sai and my father too. My master, Sai and my friend he is. Sai's mercy is to me all wealth. I know none else, none else indeed I know.

DEVOTEES EXPERIENCE AND ARTICLES INTRODUCING SHRI SHIRDI SAI BABA (Late) Dr. RS.R. Swami

BABA'S MIRACLE - 8

Why fear when I am here? Cast your burdens upon me and I will bear them" - Baba My ancestral back ground and the evironment in which I was born and bred up had cast me into a philosophic mould and conditioned me to believe that "There is a destiny that shapes our ends / Rough - hew them how we may." After the advent of Baba into my life, my experiences with him amply con-firmed and ratified this belief. Rather it became an axiom in due course proving itself again and again in a remarkably incredible manner. I gave no thought for the morrow. The unsettled war- years found a large number of us employed willy nilly in some establishment connected with the war-effort. With the ending of the war, however, most of these units were closed down one by one. I was functioning as an Administrative Officer in the Em-

25-09-1997: Sai appeared as a fakir and said: 1. Well in those days Bhagoji Shinde although discarded by the society,

lived courageously with my blessings. Why at all should people fear dreaded diseases and think of committing suicides.

2. I never wear foot ware to understand the difficulties of my devotees placing their faith in me.

3. I am in full knowledge about all the odds faced by men, women, and living creatures as I look after their welfare.

4. One who can see both birth and death with equanimity is my real devotee.

barkation HQ, Vishakapatnam at that time. Of course, I knew I had to seek a job elsewhere. But then what is Baba for? Does he not provide the impetus to act, leading us into "fresh fields and pastures new?" Has He not assured His devotees that there would be no want in their houses? Is He not ever ready and willing to take over our burdens if only we cast them on Him with full faith? So why worry? Such were my thoughts and I was as unconcerned as I could be. Accordingly, one fine morning my boss, Capt. Boohariwallah, a man of sterling character and independence who had recently taken over asked me whether I had been recommended for a Per-manent position as an administrative Officer in the army. Un my replying in the negative, he forthwith put up a letter to the GHQ strongly recommending me for the job. He followed up by phoning the Staff Officer con-cerned at intervals to make sure the proposal received due consideration. This spontaneous acion of the Officer only underlined my belief in Baba's solicitude for the welfare of those who put their faith in Him On this note of hope I found myself discharged on the closing down of our establishment in July '48. Months dragged on but nothing was heard from Delhi. I had saved nothing and had to begin selling things to fend for the family. First it was the furniture. Then it was my wife's jewellery one by one till by Dec '48 we came to the end of our resources except for just one gold chain around her neck. I kept in touch with the CHQ through one of the officers still available. I had every reason to be hopeful. However, in. retrospect I wonder at my seeming stupidity in my failure to seek an alternative job. But, then it never occured to me I should try. As luck would have it, reducing my hopes to ashes, came the government's declaration of the 'Hyderabad Action' against the Nizam. The whole army was geared up overnight to achieve success in their effort and chances of my appointment vanished into thin air. It was a terrible shock. I sat before Baba and cried. My wife who was convalescing after confinement and whose matchless devotion to Baba has always been exemplary told me it was needless for me to cry or lose heart. Baba was actually testing her faith not mine, she exclaimed. "Let this lost piece too go. Let us see what He does afterwards," so saying, she practically tore the chain off her neck and threw it. "Please take and sell this away .and let Him take over," she concluded. For a long while I could not bring myself to pick it up. I felt like a heartless robber, having no alternative, I steeled myself to take it and sell it. Within a week after this, I got my first permanent appointment as a higher grade Office Assistant in the Royal Indian Navy through the good offices of Capt. Krishnaswamy who happened to be a former student of mine. I was past 40. I think it was the first as well as the last exemption from such over-age ever granted. It could happen that way because the Navy was still under British Admiralty manned by Britishers at the top and an Englishman had strongly recommended it in my favour. In the ultimate analysis, it was Baba fulfilling Himself in His own wonderful way.

Courtesy: http://blessedones.saibaba.com/ I heard first of Sai Baba in 1909 and went to see him. I was always desirous of association with Sadhus, saintly people. I heard he was a Saint, so I felt attracted to him. He appeared in my dream and called me to Shirdi. At that time my elder daughter (aged then six months) was very ill and so my mother objected to my. going. I still pre-sisted in going to Shirdi and I took my wife, that child and my mother with me to Shirdi. I remained there (first visit) for thirteen days. On the third day of my visit, the

child got alright. Baba did not permit me to go back till the thirteenth day. I did not ask him about any matter. He told my mother that for seven centuries, he (Sai Baba) was connected with me. "I will not forget him, I will always remember him even if he is away more than 2000 miles. I will not eat even a bit without him," said Baba. Then I started away to Nasik with his permission. We went back to Dadar where I was living. My wife got an attack of cholera and the doctor gave her up as hopeless. I gave Baba's Udhi and Tirtha to her. I saw Baba at the side of Datta Mandir in front of my Dadar house and he ordered me to give the Udhi and Tirtha and so I gave her the Udhi and Tirtha. Half an hour later, she had recovered suffi-cient warmth and the doctor felt hopeful of her recovery and she recovered. Since then I visited Baba very often and stayed long periods at Shirdi in obedience to Baba's order. Baba would occasionally ask Mr.H.S.Dixit to write to me to go over. I have visited Baba often with Dixit.

I went with no worldly motives, though I was very poor; I was an orphan. He told me to continue my previous Upasana. I was and am fond of worshipping Vishnu and of prayers. I continued the same. He asked me several times for Rs.2 only. Once I asked him what for he asked always for Rs.2. He then said, "It is not these

Rupees I want. I want Nishta, i.e., concentrated faith and Saburi (patience)." I replied I had given these, faith in him and was patiently awaiting progress. He told me to keep up Nishta and to be strict and anxious to fulfil all promises I made. "You should have truth always with you. Then I will be always with you, wherever you are and at all times." I promised to try my best and wanted his help for controlling my mind. "Please get that done by me", I told him. He agreed. All this was at my very first visit. He then told me to buy my own house. I had only Rs.35 salary. By his grace, in three years time I got the house. At once as soon as he said "Buy," I purchased a plot and began to build and in three years, the building was finished at Bandra, wherein I am still living. "Do not ask for a single pie from anyone. I will help you myself." I was slow at first in building. He threw stones at me for my delay. Nana S.C. and H.S.Dixit offered to build it for me. But Baba would not permit it. I then took a loan from my office of Rs.500 and built it. It was a lonely building in a field. Baba said that he was sitting himself there and guarding me and my young wife. So I stayed on. I lost my wife in 1920.

He often insisted on my adherence to truth. I am now joint-treasurer of Baba's Samasthan. After Baba's de-mise, he would appear to me and order me to go and stay at Shirdi and attend to duties relating to Samast-han. I see and recognize his control over me in all details of what I have to do and am doing.

Baba’s daily routine Baba used to be in Dwarkamai the whole day. Nearby there was a thick jungle of thorny shrubs. it was called Lendi Baug.Baba went there for long hours to do yoga practices. Several Bhaktas offered him dakshina (money) and Baba im-mediately distributed it to the poor and needv. Sometimes, the sum thus distributed was as much as Rs .500/-. Baba never delivered long sermons. He told simple parables, car-

rying particular lessons. The words came from Baba's heart and directiv entered the lis-teners' hearts. Sometimes the parable was meant for a particular person. To others, it appeared to be rnerely an amusing story, but it went home straight to the person con-cerned. Baba knew what was passing in the listener's mind and spoke to him accord-ingly. Baba even knew the future and forewarned the people about it in suggestive terms. None, knew what 'education' Baba had. But his talk showed that he was well-versed as much in Veda and Upanishads as in Koran Sharif. He analyzed every word of Gita very skillfully. In Shirdi, there, were no good flowers for Baba's worship. Only wild flowers had to be used, so Purandare kaka, an ardent devotee, brought a few saplings from Bombay and asked for Baba's permission to plant them. But Baba flatly refused, obviously because he detested all outward show. He wanted Shirdi to blossom forth with real devotion. Purandare pleaded again and again but Baba was relentless. Purandare felt very sad. Three days passed without Purandare taking even a drop of water. In the meantime the saplings dried up. At last seeing his agony, Baba's heart melted. He called Purandare and, patting him on the back, said lovingly, "Kaka, go and plant the saplings. Though dried up, they will take roots. Go." And it happened exactly as Baba bad said. Some-thing 'super' natural. The flowering plants at present found in Shirdi thus owe their ori-gin to Baba's kripa. On the way from Dwarkamai to Lendi Baug you will notice a neem tree. Under it there is a cavern containing a tomb. Baba himself pointed out this place and said, "This is my

Page 9: g201219

Guru's Samadhi. I have practiced my penance here. When going to Lendi Baug and back, Baba unfailingly stopped here and adoringly bowed to the Samadhi. Baba, with his own hands, daily prepared 'prasadam' in a big handi. This consisted of rice, dal, vegetables and even meat with appropriately ground masala. AlI Bhak-tas were eager to partake even a morsel of it. Without distinction of caste, creed or religion, they all assembled in a spirit of bon homie. It was a sight worth seeing. It was the Gopal kala of Baba. Baba himself went a-shopping to buy all the articles required for the prasadam. In wordly dealings, Baba was very practical. Here is an instance. Once a woman came with a bunch of seeta-fals --- the first flush of the season --- to sell the same

to Baba. After much higgling and haggling, Baba fixed the price at 10 annas. Presently, another woman came with a similar bunch. But Baba now fixed the price at 6 annas . Why? Because, the need at the second deal was much less, and so was the price offered. However, while making payment, Baba paid Re 1/- to each. Thus Baba was a liberal giver, but could not be cheated to give.

Baba had no temptation as regards his body or the household. He begged alms as a vow at five houses only and lived in the ramshackle mosque Dwarkamai with per-fect satisfaction. In Dwarkamai, there was a shelf 5 ft. long and barely 9 inches in width, hung by slender shreds. Many a time, Baba was found sleeping on that shelf. How could those shreds support the weight of the shelf with Baba lying on it was a mystery never solved. But how Baba got up there and back again was a mystery deeper still.

Chapter 49 Contributed by: [email protected] .. Somadeva Swami When he went and saw Shirdi Sai from the courtyard, he melted inside, his eyes were full of tears, his throat was choked and all his evil and crooked thoughts vanished. He remembered his Guru's saying that - 'that is our abode and place of rest where the mind is most pleased and charmed.' He wished to roll himself in the dust of Baba's Feet and when he approached Baba, the latter got wild and cried aloud - "Let all our humbug (paraphernalia) be with us, you go back to your home, beware if you come back to this Masjid. Why take the darshan of one who flies a flag over his Masjid? Is this a sign of sainthood? Remain here not a moment." The Swami was taken aback by surprise. He realized that Baba read his heart and spoke it out. How omniscient He was! He knew that he was least intelligent and that Baba was noble and pure. He saw Shirdi Sai embracing somebody, touching someone with his hand, comforting others, staring kindly at some, laughing at others, giving udi prasad to some and thus pleasing and satisfying all. Why should he alone be dealt with so harshly? Thinking seriously he came to realize that Baba's conduct responded exactly to his inner thought and that he should take a lesson from this and improve; and that Baba's wrath was a bless-ing in disguise. It is needless to say that later on, his faith in Baba was con-firmed and he became a staunch Sai devotee. Sai Ram. Baba was admonishing the ego of such people and through such admonitions, purifying them, so that they become fit to receive grace. Gold for example has to be molten, acid cleaned, and then beaten etc. to become jewellery that adorns women and better still idols of Gods and Gurus. Sai Ram.
