Brain Injury can happen to anyone...
Anytime,
Anywhere.
FY 2013Annual Report
30 Lyman Street, Suite 10, Westborough, MA 01581 • www.biama.org
ow that our 30th anniversary has come and gone, it’s now time to look toward the future! After
thirty years we have made tremendous strides, however we have only scratched the surface of
where we want to be. With currently over 775 members and 30 support groups statewide, we are proud
to provide a better future for brain injury survivors and their families through education,
prevention, support and advocacy.
Some of our immediate goals for the upcoming year include raising awareness and visibility for BIA-
MA, becoming the premier resource for brain injury in New England, staying abreast of the trends
and research of brain injury and advocating for legislation and improved community services for
individuals with brain injuries.
BIA-MA has developed an aggressive marketing plan that includes the participation of local sports
celebrities, and the addition of new staff, capable of increasing the awareness of BIA-MA.
Our accomplishments would not have been possible without a supportive Board of Directors, many
families, corporate sponsors and friends of the organization. Most importantly BIA-MA remains one
of the top brain injury affiliates in the country due in part to the dedicated staff, volunteers and our
Board of Directors. We thank you for all of your continued support. With your help, we will be able
to accomplish the goals established by the Board and the staff of the Association.
BIA-MA will aggressively continue its advocacy efforts as well as pursue new educational initiatives.
What originally began as a dream, thirty years later is now reality. I am honored to serve as the President
and look forward to a bright future for brain injury survivors.
Sincerely,
Teresa Hayes, MSW, LICSW

Dr. Harold Wilkinson
As a neurosurgeon and the father of a young adult son who lingered and died following a severe traumatic brain injury
(TBI), Dr. Harold Wilkinson encountered TBI both as a caregiver and as a family member. During two decades at UMass
Medical Center, he directed the neurotrauma unit, providing emergency care for TBI and spinal cord injury victims (SCI).
Dr. Wilkinson also taught neurosurgical residents, medical students, nurses and other caregivers and pursued research to
better understand and manage these devastating problems.
"My wife, my other son, and I together faced the terror and heartbreak of my son's devastating injury. With the help of
friends, a strong faith, mutual support and an abiding love for our son, we survived our ordeal."
"Injuries to the brain and spinal cord strike at the very heart of human existence and can impair any and all functions,
including consciousness, thought, speech, movement, perception, emotions, and unconscious bodily controls," he said.
"The rate of recovery is often slow but persistent. Lost brain tissue cannot be re-grown, but damaged brain or spinal cord
tissue can gradually heal, and the brain has a remarkable set of "backup" systems which can be trained to take over many
lost functions."
"Roughly one-half of brain and spinal cord recovery takes place in the first six months, and then the rate slows. Recovery
can be maximized by personal effort on the part of the TBI survivor and by support and motivation from families as well
as from professional caregivers," he adds. "Patients with severe TBI commonly deal with related or secondary medical
conditions, and lifestyle changes may be necessary to resume a full and gratifying life."
"Survivors and families should be alert to secondary conditions which can delay recovery, including fluid in and around the
brain, subdural hematomas, and seizures or convulsions. Family members and spouses may react emotionally to these
changes, so continuing support is essential."
"Dealing with the complexity of the medical establishment during acute care and rehabilitation can be frustrating and
overwhelming. Survivors and families should actively seek information from professionals regarding care and advocacy.
The BIA-MA is a valuable asset in each of these areas and is always available to provide support, advocacy, education
and guidance."
9 Annual Report | Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts
“My son suffered a traumatic brain injury
and died. For me, BIA-MA’s excellent
prevention programs are especially gratifying.
Seeing and experiencing the good they do for
family members and survivors is a continuing
source of comfort.”
Katie Atchue
The look on 20-year-old Katie Michelle Atchue's face is almost
always a smile. Katie suffered an arteriovenous malformation
(AVM) hemorrhage when she was eight years old. The condition,
which is present at birth, happens when arteries in the brain
connect directly to veins without the necessary capillaries between
them. This incident occurs in less than 1% of the population,
and the results can be devastating.
Katie lost her abilities to speak and eat, her short-term memory was
affected, and she sometimes finds it difficult to focus. "I had to learn
how to walk all over again, how to hold my head up by myself and
how to use my communication device," says Katie. "I had to learn to
do a lot of things again."
Katie, who was a walking, talking child until third grade, now uses a
walker to aid with balance and a DynaVox machine to help her
communicate. She also communicates through sign spelling with her
family and teachers at the Cotting School in Lexington. The Cotting
School serves individuals with moderate to severe disabilities.
"When she started there, she was just beginning to be able to walk
again," says Katie's mother, Joan Atchue. "She had no means of communication at all."
Katie's DynaVox, which has pages of programmed phrases and pictures, is very similar to a tablet with its touch screen
and computer memory. It also helps Katie with her short-term memory issues by reminding her when she needs to do
certain things throughout her day.
Katie, who understands most everything that is spoken to her, uses a social service dog in public. "When Katie goes out,
people, especially small children, stare at her because they see her using her DynaVox to talk and a walker," says Joan.
"Katie's dog, Cabot, helps make her more approachable in public."
Part of Katie's school work puts her in the community to work several days a week for a few hours at a time. When Katie
worked at Buddy Dog Humane Society, Cabot inspired her to make 15 dog beds to donate to the dogs there. After folks
at the Cotting School saw her work, they asked her to make 25 more pillows for the holiday fair. Katie donated all of her
pillows and this year made aprons for all of her classmates. "Sewing is my favorite hobby," says Katie.
Katie also volunteers one day a week at the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts where she learned about the PALS
program. PALS is a recreational and socialization program that matches brain injury survivors, ages 16 and older, with vol-
unteers who have similar interests. Katie has two PALS—Jessica and Caroline—who scrapbook, sew, play board games
and go to the movies with her.
"Jessica likes to do some of the things Katie likes, and Caroline had an AVM, so on some level, she knows what Katie went
through," says Joan. "I'm amazed at how well they relate to Katie who is so thrilled to be able to spend time with these
women. They don't realize the impact this has had on her."
"I love the PALS program because I get to hang out with other people my age," says Katie. "It's nice to hang out with
people who realize that even if some people have a brain injury, they are pretty much the same."
Katie advises other brain injury survivors to join the PALS program to make friends with others who have similar
interests. Her best advice? "Never Give Up."
Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts | Annual Report 10
“For community service at my school,
I volunteered at the BIA-MA. They
make me realize that even if people
like me have a brain injury, they are
the same. This has had a positive
impact on my life.”
