MARKET PROSPECTS
4Pump Industry Analyst March 2013
year acetonitrile plant at Tong Suh Petrochemical Corp Ltd’s Ulsan site in South Korea.
Acetonitrile is produced by refining the crude acetonitrile obtained as a byproduct of acrylonitrile. It is mainly used as a solvent in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. Asahi Kasei Chemicals already has a 14 000 tons per year acetonitrile plant in Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan.
Having two production bases for ace-tonitrile in Japan and Korea will enable Asahi Kasei Chemicals to provide reliable supply to meet growing demand in the pharmaceutical industry especially in India and China.
The new plant is scheduled for start-up in January 2014.
Jacobs to design Chinese sulfuric acid regeneration plant
Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical Co Ltd has selected Jacobs
Engineering Group Inc to design a sulfuric acid regeneration plant in Lianyungang, Jiangsu, China.
The regeneration plant is expected to treat spent acid from a new methylmethacrylate and acrylonitrile production facility, and is the first regeneration plant in mainland China to use a combination of Jacobs’ proprietary sulfuric acid regeneration and sulfuric acid concentration technologies in an effort to reduce overall energy requirements for the facility.
Jacobs is providing the process design package, detailed design for critical equipment, design and supply of its proprietary Chemetics equipment, as well as technical advisory services for the plant’s construction and commissioning.
POWER GENERATION
Boustead wins condensate polishing plant contract in Taiwan
Boustead Salcon Water Solutions Pte Ltd has secured a multimillion
dollar contract to design, engineer and construct a condensate polishing
plant for a 2 x 800MW ultra supercritical coal-fired thermal power plant operated by Taiwan Power Co (Taipower) in Talin, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
The condensate polishing plant, which has a capacity of more than 118 500 cubic metres/day, employs an advanced ion exchange technology to produce high purity grade boiler feedwater for the thermal power plant.
The Talin plant is part of Taipower’s long-term power development program to install 23.7 GW of new capacity by 2022 and replace existing less energy-efficient power generating units in Taiwan.
FW to supply CFB steam generator for South Korean biomass power plant
A subsidiary of Foster Wheeler AG’s Global Power Group is
to design and supply a circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) steam generator for GS EPS’s Dangjin 4 Biomass Power Plant Project in South Korea.
Under the contract, Foster Wheeler will design and supply the 105 MWe CFB steam generator and auxiliary equipment for the boiler island. The steam generator will be designed to burn palm kernel shells with co-firing of coal, and wood pellets as back-up fuel.
The new steam generator is scheduled for commercial operation in the third quarter of 2015.
CARBON CAPTURE
FutureGen 2.0 CCS project moves into second phase
The FutureGen Industrial Alliance has signed a new cooperative
agreement with the US Department of Energy for Phase II of the FutureGen 2.0 carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Meredosia, Illinois.
In cooperation with the FutureGen project partners, the Department of Energy
is investing in the upgrade of a 167 MW coal-fired power plant in Meredosia with oxy-combustion technology to capture more than 90% of the plant’s carbon emissions.
The oxy-combustion approach extracts the oxygen from air before combustion, greatly reducing the cost of carbon capture at the exhaust stack.
The CO2 will then be safely transported
and securely stored underground at a nearby storage site.
MINING
Fluor to analyze and validate Australian mine potential
Fluor Corp is to complete a feasibility survey for Australian
mining company Crosslands Resources’ Jack Hills Expansion Project in Western Australia.
Under the contract, Fluor will be responsible for validating, refining and finalising a study conducted by Crosslands Resources’ strategic asset review for a major expansion of the Jack Hills iron ore mine. The process plant facilities will handle 61 million tonnes per annum of feed ore to produce a magnetite iron ore concentrate.
The Jack Hills mine is operated by Crosslands Resources, which is owned by the Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corp. In the past five years, the mine has produced about 1.8 million tonnes per annum of direct shipping iron ore.
PHARMACEUTICALS
Jacobs to expand Sanofi Pasteur vaccine facility
Jacobs Engineering Group Inc is to provide detail engineering services
for the expansion and refurbishment of Sanofi Pasteur’s flu vaccine facility in Ocoyoacac, Mexico.
Jacobs executed the first phase of this project in 2010. For the second phase, Jacobs will undertake detail engineering from its Mexico operations.
The overall goal of the project is to increase plant production capacity.
