Services and technologies applied throughout the world

PhotonicsPhotonics is the science of light-based technologies include sensors, lasers and fibre optics. South Australia has world-class research capabilities in this field at all three local universities.

Engineering firm S J Cheesman has adapted and engineered high-temperature sensors to be used at Nyrstar’s Port Pirie Smelter. Temperature readings are transmitted from the sensors to smelter operators to optimise production and can be used to help smelter manufacturers to improve the design and lifespan of components.

Digital technologyThis is the term used to describe the use of digital resources to effectively find, analyse, create, communicate and use information in a digital context.

Consumer goods manufacturer, Electrolux South Australia recently implemented a simple software solution to monitor equipment efficiency in real time. The new low-cost software has enabled the company to increase its production efficiency on one machine by approximately 10% in its first month. The software enables operators to provide feedback via a simple reporting system to give managers a clear picture regarding production downtime.

South Australia is known as a state that thrives on turning new ideas into high-value added goods and services by taking advantage of and showing leadership in the manufacturing sectors of the future.

Medical devices and assistive technologiesThrough close collaboration with the three local universities, South Australian manufacturers are breaking new ground in the growing medical device and assistive technology sector. The South Australian Government has also established TechInSA to fast track the development of high-tech companies with a particular focus on bio innovation and medical technology.

Examples of locally-designed and prototyped medical devices include a new surgical instrument which will enable bone graft delivery during minimally invasive spinal fusion procedures; a new x-ray device which enables a more targeted and faster x-ray process for specialised and general dentistry; and wearable technology that uses light to treat sleep apnoea and jetlag by adjusting the body clock.

Renewable energy technologies South Australia is a leader in adopting renewable energy, and being the driest state in the driest inhabited continent on earth, it has developed considerable expertise in water technologies. The state is also an emerging leader in related green technologies, and investors in this sector benefit from South Australia’s supportive policy and regulatory frameworks.

Tonsley-based ZEN Energy is Australia’s first 100 percent renewable energy utility provider, and developer of energy storage technology. The company recently won a A$1 million tender to install lithium ion batteries at three sites around the city of Adelaide to demonstrate how battery storage can play a role in reducing the carbon footprint of large buildings and save costs.

Advanced materialsThese are materials that have been designed to have superior functionality or characteristics that create new performance or value.

The University of South Australia has developed an advanced coating for car mirrors which are manufactured from plastic rather than glass and are now being exported throughout the world. The plastic mirrors are shatter-proof and also help reduce the weight of the cars creating fuel and energy efficiency savings.

Additive manufacturingOften referred to by the generic term ‘3D printing’, additive manufacturing is used to rapidly manufacture a 3D object layer by layer from a 3D image or computer-aided design file.

Electronics company, Redarc used additive manufacturing during the product design phase for its Tow-Pro, an electric trailer brake controller for vehicles. Redarc generated 3D printed prototypes for everything for this product from its housing to packaging and even the circuit board. These prototypes provided a cost effective method of testing design features before committing them to the final design.

Advanced robotics and automationIncreasingly capable robots with enhanced sensors, dexterity and intelligence can be used to automate tasks or to augment human activity. South Australia has emerging capabilities in both metal and polymer-based technologies.

Plastics and specialist moulding manufacturer, Techno Plas, runs a highly unique plant and has automated its processes to a level it can run the entire production facility unmanned. Highly-skilled technical and project management teams have enabled the development of most automation in-house.

NanotechnologyNanotechnology is an emerging area of capability working across chemistry, physics, biology and materials science to manipulate matter at the molecular scale. Nanotechnology enables the development of new materials, devices, or other structures with unique properties.

Watch designer Bausele, has worked with South Australian researchers to develop a new advanced material to improve the product design of its watches. South Australia is a place where ideas can be developed, trialled and sold to the world, in an environment with innovation at its core – and we apply this creativity using the latest technological and scientific research.

Our state is undergoing an economic transformation – moving towards high value-added, sophisticated activities that will generate new investment and create the jobs and industries of the future.

A connected cityAdelaide prides itself on being a smart and connected city where innovative new ideas and solutions can be developed, tested and incubated. A partnership between CISCO, the state government, the Adelaide City Council, the three public universities, iiNet and NEC is enhancing that reputation by building the network infrastructure for connected communities.

Adelaide was the first city in Australia to offer free Wi-Fi across the central business district and this has become one of the best-performing free Wi-Fi zones in Australia. In January 2015, CISCO announced Adelaide as the nation’s first Lighthouse City putting the city on a prestigious list that includes Barcelona, Chicago, Hamburg and Dubai.

In November 2015 the Smart City Studio was launched, opening up Adelaide as an innovation lab for entrepreneurs, community and researchers seeking to build the city of the future.

Adelaide has been announced as Australia’s first Gig City, with fibre networks already linking key universities, defence hubs, innovation hubs, schools and more than 150 other locations across the greater Adelaide region.

Adelaide is the first city outside of the United States admitted to the US Ignite accelerator program for data intensive businesses which includes Smart City initiatives.

Carbon neutral initiativesSouth Australia is actively looking for opportunities to create new and exciting industries in the global move to low carbon economies.

Through the South Australian Government’s A low carbon investment plan for South Australia, our goal is to achieve A$10 billion investment in low carbon energy generation by 2025.

To further South Australia’s ambitions our government recently committed to establishing a carbon neutral ‘Adelaide Green Zone’ to make Adelaide the world’s first carbon neutral city. This initiative is designed to drive further emissions reductions, increase the demand for renewable energy, build the state’s green industries, increase resource efficiency, improve waste management and facilitate the transition to cleaner transport modes.

TonsleySouth Australia is home to Tonsley, Australia’s first innovation precinct, bringing together leading-edge institutions and companies to connect with start-ups, business incubators and accelerators.

It combines an award winning mixed-use development, strong academic and training institutions, a mix of established global companies and start-ups, and carefully curated research and industry networks to offer investors a collaborative environment that supports high value industry.

The A$253 million investment on site will leverage over A$1 billion in private sector investment.

Through proactive, progressive policy and strong leadership the South Australian Government has created a stable and supportive business environment for investors – and an environment where new technologies and products can be trialled and tested.

We do this by implementing progressive legislation and a range of support programs and services designed specifically to foster growth and innovation within the advanced manufacturing sector.

South Australia embraces technological innovations and recognises their potential to improve congestion, save lives, reduce carbon emissions, and transform mobility for people across Australia. As a leading Smart City, Adelaide has enormous capacity for innovation and is the ideal location to become a test bed for transport innovation.

Driverless vehiclesThe South Australian Government has been the first in Australia to legislate to permit the testing of driverless vehicles on our state’s roads. This commitment to innovation and transformation highlights the state’s pioneering vision for this rapidly growing sector and reinforces its message that driverless vehicles in all forms are welcome here.

In November 2015, Adelaide hosted the first driverless car trials in the southern hemisphere, opening the door for our state to become a key player in the emerging driverless vehicle industry. The trial was undertaken in collaboration with Volvo and as part of the Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative (ADVI) on Adelaide’s Southern Expressway, a freeway south of the city.

Volvo took part with its XC90 model to demonstrate lane keeping, adaptive cruise control and active queue assist in a fully automated mode. One of our primary telecommunications service providers, Telstra, provided a live stream broadcast of the demonstrations from inside one of the vehicles.

In October 2016, the South Australian Government announced a A$10 million investment to boost research, development, testing and deployment of connected and autonomous vehicle technology. Through this investment companies, industry bodies, research institutions and other organisations from overseas or Australia are invited to submit creative proposals that will accelerate the development and implementation of this technology in South Australia.

Electric vehiclesThe South Australian Government’s and Adelaide City Council’s zero carbon ambitions have widened the scope for electric vehicles in the state.

The state will be reviewing the Motor Vehicle Act and its Low Emission Vehicle Strategies to make it cheaper to register and purchase electric vehicles. These reviews also seek to build robust electric vehicle infrastructure including charging stations.

There is also policy development underway to restrict Adelaide’s main commercial district to hybrid and electric vehicles only in 10 years’ time. In 2017, the Adelaide City Council will install at least 40 additional charging stations to promote the use of electric vehicles in this area. There are ongoing discussions with vehicle manufacturers about regulatory changes needed for this shift to electric and autonomous vehicles.
