SIGNAGEDIRECTIONAL & INFORMATION

Directional signs, information panels, and finger posts are

important features of any well planned street scheme.

Furnitubes produce a wide range of standard finger posts

manufactured in steel with cast iron embellishments.

In order to ensure a complete integration of styles within a

certain area, Furnitubes are able to adapt many standard cast

iron bollards to become finger posts. Many local authorities

have commissioned Furnitubes to design bespoke finger posts,

along with other products, as part of unique street

enhancement packages. (See Special Commissions page 8)

Furnitubes offer a range of standard directional arms, all cast

in aluminium and available with a number of standard

typeface alternatives. A wide range of finials is offered, some

with the capacity to incorporate lettering and logos, hand

finished to our customers’ specifications. Furnitubes is pleased

to quote for variations such as different font styles or

incorporation of town crests.

A natural progression from the finger post is the display case.

Pictured below, the Kingston and Westminster finger post

columns have been integrated into the design and are part of the

display case construction. Furnitubes offer a wide choice of

columns and finials, finished in most BS 4800 and RAL series

colours, ensuring consistency with other items of street furniture.

Wall mounted versions are available with or without a header

board. The header board is cast to include the local authority

name, site details or public information and is available single or

double-sided for freestanding column mounted display cases.

The robust display cases are protected against dust and

damp, the doors are glazed with toughened float glass and

sealed both sides of the glazing with a perimeter EPDM seal.

To prevent vandalism the cases are supplied with a concealed

secure locking system and an instruction sheet is provided.

Using half collar arms will generally reduce the overall height

of the fingerpost, as shown on these comparative illustrations.

Please note that arms interlock only with those of the same

height, i.e. a single line arm will interlock only with a single

line arm, not with a double or triple line arm, etc.

FONT OPTIONS

Standard font options are either the traditional

‘Cloister Bold’, in 42mm overall height upper &

lower case letters or the more plain, modern

‘Helvetica Medium’ in 42mm height upper case

letters only.

The layouts shown give an approximate indication as

to the maximum number of characters that can be

fitted on a single line. Where the destination is

longer than a single line, the wording can of course

carry over on to the second/third lines of double/triple

line arms.

LETTERING JUSTIFICATION

Lettering is justified to the left on both faces of the

arm.

Please note, when a symbol is used at the end of the

wording on the ‘front’ face of the arm, it will be

nearest the post, whereas on the ‘reverse’ face, it will

be nearest the arrow end of the arm.

SYMBOLS

We have a standard stock range of Department of

Transport signage symbols, selected examples of

which are shown here.

Other symbols or logos can be created in single

level relief upon supply of the artwork on disc or as a

positive (black on white) full size hard copy.

Also shown here is the Tablet Finial, with example

wording. The central area of the finial can be a void

(hole) or may be used to display a logo or crest.

FINGER POST VARIATIONS

Furnitubes’ range of fingerposts offers a wide range of

possibilities with a choice of columns, finials, directional arms

and fonts as standard. However, to achieve specific

requirements our design team can work with the customer to

adapt standard fingerposts or develop new designs.

On occasions, a number of items which are required for a

single site may be combined. For example, where lamp posts,

hanging baskets and finger posts are specified they may be

produced as a single unit.

The signage for the Thames Path from Woolwich to

Deptford, is for an integrated route through Greater London.

The fingerposts are distinctive in design employing tablet

finials to display the site location and an individual font

selected by the client. Our design team were central in the

debate of the arm legend design, advising on both legibility

and practicality of manufacture.

Furnitubes have manufactured fingerposts for Westminster

City Council. These elegant posts reinforce corporate identity

since they are cast with the City of Westminster crest and are

manufactured with special size arms. The fingerposts, unique

to the city of Westminster, can be seen at many high profile

locations throughout London including Buckingham Palace,

Marble Arch, Bond Street and Victoria.

Furnitubes worked in conjunction with Royal Tunbridge Wells

Borough Council to improve signage and security in the town

centre.

The basis of the fingerpost design was an elegant leaf form

which was inspired by an existing Victorian lamp column.

Furnitubes’ design team sympathetically updated the detail from

the original post, taking care to acknowledge influences from

both past and present.

As part of the councils commitment to provide CCTV cameras

within the town centre, Furnitubes were approached to design a

CCTV column that was attractive but would also house and

provide access to all the electronics vital to the operation of the

cameras. The classical design pictured satisfies both these criteria,

blending in well with the variety of architecture within the town

centre.

consultation. With favourable feedback, the fingerposts together

with CCTV columns and information drums, were installed

throughout the town (see Special Commissions brochure).

Traditional schemes require a sympathetic approach to

design and materials used. Furnitubes’ design team is able to

advise on the most appropriate materials and finishes to

complement any traditional or historic scheme.

Skilled pattern making and careful hand finishing produces

intricate plaques such as the one for Crofton pictured here.

Post-mounted plaques can be supplied as individual items or

in conjunction with directional signs and finger posts.

Cast in aluminium and hand painted, the Grosvenor Estate

sign was produced to enable the text to be changed without

removing the sign.

The historic centre of Greenwich is a popular London

attraction, with visitors arriving by road, rail and river.

Enclosed by buildings on all four sides and therefore unseen

from the surrounding roads and footways, the craft market has

raised its profile by employing these purpose designed

location signs.

The market plan at the base of the sign has a key that relates

to the name plates above; these are also interchangeable so

they may be readily updated when shop tenants and stall

holders change.

Cast in hard wearing bronze, the heritage plaque, pictured

below complements the prestigious surrounding area of

Putney Bridge.

One of the simplest and most cost effective forms of signage is

silk screening onto sheet metal. When Furnitubes’ Recycling

Centres were installed in Sutton, circular sheet aluminium

signs were produced and silk screening was chosen to achieve

replication of the modern emblem. Since this method is less

expensive than some other forms of signage, it is especially

useful in areas where a large quantity of signs are required or

where budgets are limited.

Furnitubes was commissioned by The Circle, an exclusive

development in the London Docklands, to produce and install

signage. Here, the letters were individually cut from stainless

steel using modern laser techniques, creating a stylish and

effective sign above the main entrance.

As part of an upgrading scheme to an ageing industrial

estate, an entrance sign, street name plates and location maps

were designed, manufactured and installed by Furnitubes.

The heavy duty entrance sign, pictured here, is designed to fit

the scale of the site. The sign stands an impressive 4.5 metres

high, with the title produced by individual cut letters

standing off the background and individual name plates in die

pressed aluminium. The location maps within the estate are

vandal resistant, manufactured to a high specification and

printed using the vitreous enamel process.

Signs are the first introduction to towns and cities and are

often seen as an indication to the merits of the area. It is

therefore prudent to consider their construction, finish and

positioning very carefully.

From concept, through design, to manufacture, Furnitubes

is able to produce signage of practically any size or shape to

suit specific requirements. Utilising a wide variety of

materials, the company has consistently produced signs of the

highest quality for both the public and private sector.

We are happy to develop diverse signage ranging from simple

street name plates to complex location maps. The cast

aluminium location map, pictured here, was specially

commissioned for West Hill Subway and was meticulously hand

painted. In addition to directional advice, the notice board has

been used to provide information concerning local history.

Furnitubes’ attention to detail can be demonstrated in the

cast aluminium street name plate pictured above. The coat of

arms, manufactured for the London Borough of Brent, was

produced in full relief and hand painted to exact colour

references. The initial form for the coat of arms is either

modelled by an artist or carved by a pattern maker to produce

this three dimensional effect.

Furnitubes’ design team worked alongside another client to

produce sixty millennium plaques for installation along a

promenade. Cast in leaded gunmetal and hand polished, the

plaques are an elegant commemoration for the millennium and

beyond.
